4-0 out of 5 stars Good perspective on the industry
Not bad, A generalized view on the structure of aviation management. Your basic stuff, Railway Labor act,Ntsb,Warsaw pact, blah, blah, blah. Book missed out on the real issues such as fuel costs ($149barrel of oil) overtaking labor costs and nearly bankrupting the entire system, (R.I.P. express jet,Air Italia,Frontier (hang in there) ,Northwest (now absorbed by Delta), Ahloha,ATA,Sterling, etc, etc. Book also missed out on the use of extreme cuts in operating costs and maximized load factors to counter the result of the extreme cost of fuel and a resession ladeneconomy. generic in scope but missed all the recent fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive textbook on air transportation management

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of various aspects of the air transportation business. The book is well written and easy to follow and understand which makes is accessible to a wide audience and all stakeholders of the air transport industry. Even those who are not familiar with the industry should find it easy to assimilate the information.

The positive points above are also the main drawback of the book for those that need a more indepth coverage of the subject, who may find the book a bit shallow. The authors also need to update the book to take into account the various major changes that continue to take place in the air transport industry.

Therefore I recommend the book to those seeking a comprehensive but basic knowledge of the air transport business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized Text on Managing Air Transportation
Whether you manage an airline, an airport, or aspire to do so, This text is for you. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only true textbook on management in the air transportation industry and it is worth every penny of its cost.

I have a long interest in the airline industry and it was nice to find a book that has no agenda that covers the subject. Although truly a textbook it is a well-organized, well thought out book that is easy to follow and understand. Perfect for students or managers in the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Aviation Delight
I have purchased Mr. Wells books for many years. Every book is meticulously and painstakenly accurate. His books are most appropriate for college level and post-graduate aviation students beginning their formal training. Yet, I find myself scrambling back to all his books for background information, general and some detailed analysis all the time.

Include this book into your library. It's part of my classic aviation collection. There are chapter outlines, checklists, and relevant examples applied to give the novice a quick blast into an aerospace career.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best text on the market
This book is "the" standard book to use in any type of air transportation environment (industry, academia, self-use). This book is a one-stop shop for anything and everything one needs to know about aviation (GA and commercial). Looking forward to future titles by the authors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
The transaction I had on 8/21/09 was a wonderful experience. Initially, I was very jerky on getting my textbook online, because I was never a fan to that. As of the time I got my text, there was no other avenue of getting it except online. I had no other choice but to give a try because time to use it was running out. The seller gave me a window of 7-14 business days but I got within 3days. The text is "Transportation of the sick & injured, 9th edition" new one. It has been serving its purpose since I got it. It's awesome.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible
I bought it as it was required for a class i was taken. 99% of the book is copied from the regulations, the book is cluttered, void of detailed analysis, and dull. It reads like watching concrete set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
This is a book that I am using for an online course I must complete for a college degree. I seems to be very up-to-date and informative. It not to big but it resembles the size of a college textbook and is just about as involved as one. Language is very aviation oriented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Keeps Getting Better!
This is the second edition of this book that I have owned. I used both for undergraduate and graduate classes at Embry-Riddle.

This book just keeps getting better. It serves as a good reference for aviation history in addition to the main subject of Air Transportation.

The author provides a wealth of information but is still easy to understand. The reference material on aircraft and manufacturers towards the end was not expected, but another informative resource, as was the section regarding commercial aviation safety and a number of case studies.

A nice touch is the "Laugh Breaks" between the chapters, which is a collection of different aviation an ATC communications that I have all heard, but only seen for the first time in publication here. They don't add to the professional information, but are nice, short little diversions.

Most textbooks I use for class and then resell. I've kept BOTH copies. The old one I keep at my the hangar, and the newer one I keep at home, to use as references. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for anyone who deals with transportation security
On any given day at America's airport terminals, grandmothers are asked to remove their shoes, raise their arms, and submit to a wanding with a magnetometer. That is in stark contrast to commercial transportation security, where even nearly seven years after 9-11, risks far greater than grandma go unchecked.

The book Transportation and Cargo Security: Threats and Solutions provides a comprehensive look at the myriad details involved with the complex, dynamic world of commercial transportation security. It includes information on maritime, land (railroad, trucking, mass transit), pipeline, and air transportation modes.

The book's 14 chapters provide a thorough overview of the specific topics that cross sectors, such as threats, countermeasures, and personnel concerns, as well as laws, regulations, government agencies, and standards for specific sectors.

Many books on these security topics include over-the-top statistics and fail to present a pragmatic view. Transportation and Cargo Security takes a practical yet hardheaded look at the core issues, which gives the reader a superb understanding of the various threats to the transportation system.

What is frustrating is that the book often refers to laws passed just after 9-11, yet many agencies and industries are still noncompliant with the many requirements contained in those laws.

Transportation and Cargo Security: Threats and Solutions is an excellent reference that anyone who deals with transportation security will find extremely valuable. This is the book that everyone in transportation security should have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Singapore port terror attack could be worse than Lehman collapse
In an April 15th 2010 interview, the brilliant Anthony Davis, author of the bestselling book "Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System" speaks exclusively to Defence IQ's Bryan Camoens on the economic impact of a terrorist attack on Singapore's port.
Anthony is the Founder of the Homeland Security Group and publisher of the Homeland Security Reports, read worldwide by the law enforcement, intelligence, security and emergency management communities. "Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System" made it to the bestseller list for 60-weeks straight. For the full article click [...]
Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System

3-0 out of 5 stars TERRORISM AFLOAT
Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System by Anthony M. Davis (USCG Ret.) gives some good basic insight to the lay reader as to the extensive responsibilities of the USCG, and the astronomical job they have of protecting the coast lines, and various water ways that are incumbent upon safety and economic trade within this country.

Mr. Davis basically gives the reader a "thumb-nail' sketch of various scenarios regarding possible terrorist/ criminal attacks on various vessels and the entire maritime infrastructure. Many of these scenarios are built upon certain historical catastrophes and events that helped to lay the present foundations for possible future responses to assaults on the maritime system.

The book reads more like a specialized text for a USGC or, Law enforcement related seminar rather than the general public.Much of the information within this book is of a very basic nature.I'm sure the author did not want to give out "too much specialized information" on this topic for obvious reasons, especially after 911.

However,Mr. Davis gives enough information for the reader to at least, appreciate the overall complexity of this particular industry and its massive problems looming in the dark holds of these potential floating steel bombs.

His writing technique is more class-room orientated than I would have liked, but the subject matter and potential repercussions of terrorism in the maritime transportation system is enough to... leave the reader sitting in a cold sweat.

Despite the author's Federal Bureaucratic make up ( I too was one), and writing style...he has none the less, exposed our real "Achilles heel." If something is not done to help protect this vital area then, we are flirting with an ultimate disaster that may just totally whitewash the 911 attacks by comparison!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand How Our Country is At Risk & Being Protected
My wife suggested I read this book. I am glad I did. So much goes into understanding how our country is protected and needs to be protected.

The author is very knowledgeable as he was a former maritime investigator and a prior maritime intelligence officer. I trust what he says in his book.

This book helped me understand exactly what we are up against when it comes to criminals and terrorists.

I highly recommend this book to people so they can understand what is all involved in protecting our country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
They say that farewarned is forearmed, and if that's the case, then Anthony Davis' book is a fantastic weapon in the continuing goal to protect ourselves. He tackles so many things I never would have even begun to consider. It was hard for me to stop reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Education We Need to Read to Protect Ourselves
"Terrorism and the Maritime Transportation System Are We on a Collision Course?" by Anthony M. Davis USCG, Ret. is an interesting book on the challenges our law enforcement and other agencies have to keep the USA safe.

The book describes the agonizing steps the officers have to go through to determine if the incident in question is a crime or a terrorist act.

The book will educate you on the new laws passed due to terrorism.

Anthony M. Davis does a wonderful job explaining why the Middle East does not get along with the Jewish people. The fact may surprise you that it is not about religion.

The book further describes all of the work we as a nation need to be doing to keep ourselves protected. There are so many areas that terrorists could threaten our citizens.

I am glad I read this book to further educate myself. We as citizens of the USA need to be aware of what is going on to keep ourselves safe. I suggest you read this fascinating and educational book. Then writing our congressmen to make the necessary changes to keep our families safe!

Brilliantly written to easily read and understand. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Editing
Purchased this book for instruction in entry level Transportation Course, to which it seems basically well suited. The book however suffers from chronic poor editing of the charts and graphs, poor layout of some charts, such as the motor carrier unit cost chart, and the chart detailing the quantities of foodstuffs consumed in New York. I would let this go if it occurs once, but lack of quality control in these areas comes through more than that. A good entry level text with good scope. I will have to fill in the gaps to assure understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totalmente Decepcionado

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is good, but the class is better!!
This good is very complex for somebody that, like me, doesn't have a economics background. The math is quite simple (I'm an engineer, so my math is very good), but you need a lot of concepts and definitions from economics that you only get in regular courses of microeconomics and econometrics.

If you are not an economists and have never taken an microeconomics course, start with Varian's microeconomics book...

Other than that, I'd really recommend you to take his course at UCI if you can... His classes are great, although he only teaches once every 3 or so years...

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and updated, a must have for the serious practitioners
This is a college textbook any serious transportation planner, economist and engineer must have in its library. Comprehensive and up to date. As an example, the chapter on pricing includes not only the Singapore case, but also the latest implementations of congestion pricing, including London, Norway, and Stockholm, and also a discussion of the technologies used for practical implementation of road pricing.

Though the economic impact valuation of climate change is just briefly discussed, it caught my attention that as good economists the authors had the courage of being politically incorrect by saying openly that "...precise prediction of effects of carbon dioxide on climate is impossible" (see page 105), but don't get confused, they are not deniers, the subject is objectively discussed within the context of environmental externalities caused by automobiles in urban areas. ... Product Description

Designing Geodatabases for Transportation addresses the development of a GIS to manage data relating to the transportation facilities and service commonly organized around various modes of travel for accurate and reliable data exchange. Transportation involves several modes of travel, and although the details of each mode can be quite different, this book demonstrates how all follow a basic conceptual structure. That structure consists of an origin, a destination, a path between the two, and a conveyance that provides the ability to move along the path to establish a common data structure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from LocalPlan.org
Books on the geodatabase tend to be oriented toward the introductory side (quite often geared toward teaching basic geodatabase concepts over a 16 week semester) or written at a level that is not attainable to the GIS novice.Designing Geodatabases for Transportation reaches well beyond the introductory level to provide a thorough explanation of the geodatabase, however it also takes the time to create a foundation based on fundamental geodatabase concepts.

At 461 pages Designing Geodatabases for Transportation probably shies away from being a weekend read to brush up on the geodatabase before launching into a project, but it is a solid reference for someone looking to trudge through the material prior to setting off on a geodatabase project. The author (J. Allison Butler) breaks the book down into three sections (Basic geodatabase design concepts, Understanding transportation geodatabase design issues, and Enterprise-level solutions and modal data models).

While not suited to someone new to GIS, Butler presents a resource that allows those with a comfortable working knowledge of GIS to begin working on applied geodatabase design.Overall, Design Geodatabases for Transportation is laid out in 18 chapters and could be used in an intermediate or advanced level GIS course (although it's important to note that the book does not have tutorials and doesn't come with the almost standard evaluations copy of ESRI software).

Designing Geodatabases for Transportation allows the reader to get comfortable with the idea of transportation in GIS.It also allows reader to expand their knowledge in how the geodatabase can be incorporated into their data management plans.Butler takes time to address the incorporation of GIS transportation standards such as the UNETRANS network data model. The book's intense focus on a specialty matter narrows the audience, but by the same token it provides a level of knowledge that is sometimes hard to come by in GIS books.Rather than focusing on the end products of a GIS (i.e. maps), Butler takes the time to work with the mechanics of transportation data.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designing Geodatabases for Transportation - RECOMMENDED
The book proved beneficial for anyone interested in learning about how transportation-related GIS data can be structured. It covers general fundamentals about GIS data management, from relational database techniques, database design, and provides great examples that other books covering the same material may not describe as well. This book encouraged me to take a look at how I manage my GIS data and guided me on how to improve on data management.Overall, it's a good book to have, a good resource for GIS transportation planners, GIS Managers, Modelers, or GIS practioners in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows how to blend data from different sources and how to solve common database design issues
Any GIS professional and any library catering to general GIS pros and transportation documentation issues needs Designing Geodatabases for Transportation, an in-depth survey of data processing transit information. It explores data modeling and other techniques adaptable to changing requirements, shows how to blend data from different sources and how to solve common database design issues, and most importantly - provides specifics linking databases to transportation needs. It's this focus that makes Designing Geodatabases for Transportation a pick beyond the usual computer library shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars We've needed this for a long time
The first of its kind, Designing Geodatabases for Transportation is likely to remain the best of its kind. Al Butler has violated several "rules" of technical writing:

* He has opinions, isn't afraid to express them, and does so in an engaging, conversational style enlivened by war stories and thinking outside the polygon. Most technical texts have no discernible voice and read as dull as dirt (apologies to soil scientists).

* He pragmatically and mercifully separates "need to knows" from "nice to knows", steering the reader around minutiae only a true nerd could love; yet retains that deeper content in unobtrusive places. Many technical works overwhelm the reader with information, providing no indication of relative importance.

* He manages to make ArcObjects comprehensible to the non or new programmer by providing simplified object model diagrams.

* He demystifies the arcana of internal ArcGIS data types, relationship classes, and other poorly explained (elsewhere) geodatabase concepts.

* Most importantly, he maps geodatabase structures to their counterparts in relational database theory. The more you understand the relational database foundation of the geodatabase, the better you'll be at designing them--this section alone makes the book worthwhile. If you're a database person adding the Geographic to your Information Systems background, this book will greatly aid your transition.

As for the transportation content, it's all there--linear referencing, dynamic segmentation, traffic counts, HPMS, editing and publishing data for State DOTs, network datasets and even geometric networks (typically not used for transportation purposes), the evolution of GIS transportation data models, etc.

Finally, and refreshingly, the author takes a one-size-does-*not*-fit-all approach, providing the reader a pick and choose, cookbook-like approach to suit individual need.

Still working my way through the book, but nodding my head in agreement more often than usual--a good indication, to me anyway, that the author:

* Knows his subject matter
* Has a gift for conveying that knowledge clearly to others.
* Has been out in the real world, solving real world problems
* Understands the business side of the Transportation house

Highly recommended to anyone interested in general geodatabase design, specific geodatabase design (transportation and possibly utility geodatabase design since linear referencing and networks play a role), and transportation GIS.

Al Butler was instrumental in helping develop the GISP certification program, and this book is another fine contribution to the GIS profession. We've not only needed this book--we need more books written like it. To my relief, it was and is not YASTMB--Yet Another Show-and-Tell Map Book. It's a practical how-to and reference for doing your job better.

Buy this book and buy copies for Transportation colleagues--they'll be asking to borrow yours, so get ahead of the game. ... Read more

Product Description
While much of the transportation systems in Europe and the United States are mature (if not senescent), the rest of the world is still planning, developing, and deploying new systems. The accomplishments and mistakes of places like the United Kingdom and the United States, then, can teach us lessons that may be applied to places where transportation remains nascent or adolescent. The Transportation Experience seeks to understand the genesis of transportation policy in America and the UK, along with the roles that this policy plays as systems are innovated, deployed, and reach maturity, and how policies might be improved. The work presents case studies of particular transport experiences in rail, road, water and air (with a special emphasis on railroads), and then finds commonalities in all of these experiences with thematic analyses that are often bold and unconventional. The book is predicated on the idea that the story of transportation policy can tell us what transportation, is, does, and might do in the future, and at an even broader level, how society has learned to create, deliver, and operate large, complicated systems. It should appeal to students and researchers in a broad array of fields, including geography, civil and environmental engineering, and public policy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on transportation
I am not an expert in the field of transportation but I am interested in the history of technology and the synthesis of various areas of expertise, which is why I found this book rewarding.

The title and the major part headings were a bit vague but further reading proved to be worthwhile.

Parts include:

Life Cycle of the Railroads
Modal Experiences
Transit, Turnpike, highways, canals, ocean, aviation
Inputs and Outputs
Communication, energy, environment, finance, forecasting, time, land
Creating Experiences
Innovation, technology, imagination, benefits
Speculations

The book is accessible to an educated reader and advanced knowledge of the field of transportation is not necessary. However, a broad interest in transportation, policy, city planning, economics, geography, and in particular, network development is definitely a plus.If you can read academic writing this book is fine.

The main question that the book asks is:Why can't we do better in the field of transportation? This question is then answered by looking not only at transportation itself but all the other areas that affect transportation. The book looks at well developed modes of transport (railroad) and speculates about possible futures, such as PRT (personal rapid transit). The authors' aim to use the past to speculate on the future and to point alternative routes of development that are still available to other parts of world. This is interesting for not being purely descriptive, though it is heavy in case history.

One of the interesting facts that I found in the book was that the S-curve of innovation was first used by Tarde in 1890, which makes all the self-glorious management books on innovation neither overly innovative nor well researched.

Overall, a surprisingly good read for me.The pull-out boxes provide interesting short reading the history of various things such as Bell Labs, air mail, and the US Army Corps of Engineer. The main body of the text asks and analyses why the field of transportation has not done better but argues we can do well in the future if we, the reader, understand the underlying history, logic, and knowledge boundaries of transportation systems.

I give it 4 and a half stars, but I never give 5. ... Read more

Product Description

In America’s car-dominated landscape, public transit has long played second fiddle, but rising gasoline prices and the global warming crisis point to a need for alternative means of transportation. Darrin Nordahl sets the stage for these efforts by proposing that the experience of public transit and the quality of the ride are pivotal to the success of public transit.

My Kind of Transit explores America’s most beloved transit systems and how they work. From San Francisco’s cable cars to Pittsburgh’s funiculars to the streetcars of New Orleans, Nordahl recounts a transportation history of both short-sighted planning and visionary policies, and reveals that current American transit systems contain many key elements for successfully expanding public transport. My Kind of Transit explains the characteristics of ideal transit, or “passenger enrichment,” such as transit vehicles that offer views of the surrounding landscape and systems that enable diverse peoples to interact.

Successful public transport must be a uniquely enjoyable experience for riders, My Kind of Transit contends, and it offers a new vision of civic engagement that occurs when we step out of our cars and onto the train.

Product Description
Transportation plays a substantial role in the modern world; it provides tremendous benefits to society, but it also imposes significant economic, social and environmental costs. Sustainable transport planning requires integrating environmental, social, and economic factors in order to develop optimal solutions to our many pressing issues, especially carbon emissions and climate change.

This essential multi-authored work reflects a new sustainable transportation planning paradigm. It explores the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable transportation, describes practical techniques for comprehensive evaluation, provides tools for multi-modal transport planning, and presents innovative mobility management solutions to transportation problems. Students of various disciplines, planners, policymakers and concerned citizens will find many of its provocative ideas and approaches of considerable value as they engage in the processes of understanding and changing transportation towards greater sustainability.

This text reflects a fundamental change in transportation decision making. It focuses on accessibility rather than mobility, emphasizes the need to expand the range of options and impacts considered in analysis, and provides practical tools to allow planners, policy makers and the general public to determine the best solution to the transportation problems facing a community.

The book starts by placing transportation within the broader sustainability discussion, emphasising a comprehensive approach to sustainability planning and introducing the notion of "regenerative transportation". In sections on policymaking and planning the book examines how decisions are currently, and how they should be, made—explaining the complex and often misunderstood area of public participation. The authors explain demand management as applied to transportation and present lessons from other public arenas and areas of application, especially in urban-suburban areas.

The text takes readers through each and every mode of transport, beginning with human-powered modes and ending in motorized modes, including marine and air transport. The modes are analyzed separately and in comparison with others according to several criteria: Capacity/utility/functionality considerations; infrastructure demands; resource consumption; land use considerations; pollution; and costs. In ways that non-technically trained readers as well as planning students professionals can find useful the book includes guidance on how to optimize transportation systems; balancing economic, social and environmental objectives while creating just, robust, and diverse, rather than one-size-fits-all, solutions. The modes are grouped and compared within their respective contexts, and there is vital discussion and differentiation between passenger and freight-goods transport. The final section develops a comprehensive summary of the previous chapters and develops arguments for sustainable transportation policymaking and integrated planning, providing international examples and case studies and extracting from them general applications for integrated sustainable transportation. Featuring extensive international examples and case-studies, textboxes, graphics, recommended reading and end of chapter questions, the authors draw on considerable teaching and researching experience to present an essential, ground-breaking and authoritative text on sustainable transport. ...
