BOOK IS GREAT AMAZON STINKS
I ordered 3 books for my MBA and AMAZON managed to lose the package 2x. I will admit the prices were right and spot on. The orginal shipment was lost and I asked for a reshipment. That was sent and lost as well. I recieved the books 2x after both shipments were found. I was meet with excuses such as, I am sorry that person is not here it is the weekend or I am sorry we can not send you another shipment. I told them I did not lose the shipments they did. They did not seem to care. Also after the booksfinally came I recieved a phone call within 24 hours telling me to send them back or I will be charged. I told them they were lost and I only just got them. This did not seem to phase them.

What does science have to say about life after death? Until recently, very little. But now there are answers, and this book lays them out. Everyone alive today will be better off knowing about the transition called death and what to expect in the afterlife.

A lengthy and exhaustive study by the University of Virginia Medical School clearly indicates consciousness continues after death in at least some cases, if not all. This particular study, begun in 1961 and continuing today, was initiated by Ian Stevenson, M.D., a psychiatrist who graduated first in his class at McGill Medical School. Stevenson went to great lengths and much effort to follow scientific protocol in his investigations. Over the years, more than 2600 of the cases he and others investigated have checked out in terms of the details reported by young children of the lives of deceased persons they claimed to have been in previous lives. Birthmarks and birth defects found on these children, such as missing fingers, hands or limbs, also frequently have been found to correspond to fatal wounds received in the previous life as recorded in autopsy reports.

In addition, research by the Windbridge Institute strongly indicates it may be possible for living loved ones to get in touch with deceased loved ones. This book tells how, and the gives names and contact information of psychics who have demonstrated this ability in blinded, scientifically-constructed studies designed by Julie Beischel, who received her Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Arizona.

Research reported on also shows that not knowing what to expect when death arrives, or being in denial about one s demise, can lead to situations none of us would choose, or wish upon a loved one. This is reason enough to read this book and to make those close to you aware of what you learn.

Those with an interest in science will be fascinated by the new discoveries and theories postulated that indicate the brain and body may have evolved to allow consciousness to interface with physical reality, and that our true home may exist outside three-dimensional reality. For example, a theory by Cambridge-educated biochemist Rupert Sheldrake is covered that may explain how it is possible for consciousness and memory to exist outside of the brain and without its support. ... Please be Warned
First, book is double spaced and has a larger font, so it is a deliberate rip-off - it is NOT really a 192 page book

Secondly, using the word "science" in the title is totally misleading - no footnotes.I could make up far better tales from my own imagination - if I wanted to make a few bucks by publishing a book...

I bought this book because I was seriously interested in knowing if there were any legitimate, science-based indications of life after death.What I received was proof that there is legitimate rip-off artists getting their garbage excuses for a book, published.

Poorly written, poorly reasoned.
Fascinating topic. What happened ? Let's count a few down...1) Footnotes : MIA. Lots of referencing...very few references. 2) Double spacing ? Is this a college paper ? If so, where are the footnotes ?? 3) No index. The plausibility factor falls just on this alone. 4) Needs a proofreader to correct misspellings/grammar errors. 5) Other books on this subject give more in depth treatment as well as better references. 6) Illustrative stories are allowed to peter out when the author feels the point has been made... repeatedly....leaving the reader unsatisfied, with many questions left unanswered. If you are interested in this subject material, I suggest looking at other booksand other authors. This book is going into the paper recycling bin at my house - a real clunker.

Very Interesting Book
If what this guy says is true, everyone should read the book and keep it in the back of their minds just in case.

Beyond Materialism and Reductionism
What happens after we die? It seems many people, especially physical scientists and money-focused financiers, are materialists/reductionists. They believe there is no after-life, and admonish us to "Enjoy this life while you have it!" However many others share author Stephen H. Martin's belief that human consciousness survives and exists after bodily death. This book summarizes much work over many years by numerous scientists, many with Ph.D.s from mainstream and respected academic institutions, who have tested various aspects of what William Shakespeare once called "the undiscovered country."

This book does NOT advocate any particular religious dogma, though the author's Western Christian heritage is shared by many readers. I have to think Buddhists, Muslims, Confuscians and members of other world-wide religious beliefs can find commonality and compatibility with the author's focus. I especially appreciate Martin's criticism of reductionist belief in Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. This theory says we evolved and improved over eons due to Natural Selection. But Martin says this violates The Law of Entropy (second law of thermodynamics), that by themselves "things tend to break down and fall apart rather than get better." In my own Ph.D. area of Economics which includes experience in Finance and Accounting, we stress "asset depreciation" in our balance sheets as implicit obedience to this second law. Note, Martin does not dispute evolution per se; he claims evolutionary growth is not possible without a primary cause. Among other names, Martin calls it Life Force or "Grace," the latter term from psychiatrist and best-selling author M. Scott Peck.

As this young century progresses, are we moving away from Materialism/Reductionism to a new paradigm which acknowledges post-bodily survival of individual consciousness? I think scientists should be intellectually open to this possibility and those willing should be encouraged to conduct unbiased research in this area. Perhaps as Martin hopes, some day secular science and world religions will all share similar beliefs about the survival of consciousness.

I heartily recommend this book to all who are not content with our mainstream materialism and wish to cultivate that curiosity implied by Shakespeare's words.

My only criticism is stylistic. The book lacks formal bibliography and index sections. Such reference aids are very useful for the serious reader wishing to pursue the subject further. The author tries to make up for this weakness by casually citing numerous books and research articles and even including reproduced covers of these books. However an extended bibliography and index would add a more professional shine to this fine collection of research.

Definitely Based on Science and a Compelling Read
In an engaging and easily to read style, the author delves into a number of scientific studies that explore the possibility of the survival of consciousness after death. One of the larger and most compelling is a 50 year long investigation into reports by children of memories of past lives begun in 1961 by the University of Virginia School of Medicine. To say this book is not based on science as one Amazon reviewer has done is patently false and totally misleading. Granted, the author does offer personal as well as other anecdotal evidence, but this serves to bring the scientific studies to life and create an enjoyable, entertaining as well as enlightening read. I never received this book after numerous times of me contacting the seller thru email and never got a response. The reach is so broad, some of the goals slip through their fingers
The attempted reach of this book is so great; nearly every goal appears to slip through their fingers. The first section of the book (577 pages) is roughly equivalent to a book in finite mathematics and the second (approximately 400 pages) to a book in business calculus. With such a broad mathematical swath being applied, the effectiveness is limited. The college where I teach mathematics and computer science recently added a course in basic mathematical modeling, so I examined this book as a possible text. I cannot envision any circumstances where this book will satisfy our needs for the reasons listed above. While the coverage is wide and to some depth, there is so much that only a fraction of the material could be covered in a semester.

The only such sequence that I can see where this book would be appropriate is one covering "Mathematics for business." The chapter on the mathematics of finance and the majority of the application examples being from business and economics would almost force this to be the only possible area of application.

Essential reading for those who wants to understand life
This is without doubt a wonderful book.It is wonderful because it uses E.coli as a concrete, real, almost tangible example to illustrate how evoultion actually works.You will be convinced and able to learn how it is possible for individually unrelated proteins, which separately perform very simple functions, can cooperate together to produce complicated sturctures and perform awe inpsiring functions.Once you have mastered the argument, you can work out yourself how a complex structure like the human eye can develop through evolution.Personally (I am a medical doctor by trade) I learn something about E.coli that can help my work - now I know the real reason why antibiotic can be harmful in treating diarrhoea.Thoroughly enjoyable!

Fascinating and informative
Carl Zimmer, one of America's premier science writers, has written another fascinating book, this one about the lowly E. coli.The book is somewhat technical, which may be unavoidable, given the topic.But if you can get past that, the book was very interesting.

As the title, "Microcosm," implies, E. coli helps give us insights into the vast world of biology.Many of the chapters in the book take a small slice of the study of biology and show how E. coli research has had an impact there.For example, E. coli research has been used to shed light on fields like abiogenesis and astrobiology, helped confirm Darwinian evolution's victory over Lamarckism in the early 1950s, played a starring role in ethical disputes over genetic engineering over the past few decades, and was deeply involved in intelligent design's humiliating loss in the recent Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School Board case.

As a poet might say, you can catch a glimpse of the entire universe simply by examining the lowly E. coli.

Another great book by Carl
Another fascinating book by Carl Zimmer.He again does a great job of explaining amazing science in an easy to read way.If we could just get kids to read books like this, far more would develop a life long interest in science.The continued struggle to survive and how life meets those challenges is amazing.And the author lets us read those amazing details without having to wade through complicated, poorly presented material (that drives so many to think science is boring).

Microcosm --- An outstanding work.
Zimmer takes an extremely complex subject and creates a readable text for the non-biologist; doing so without watering down the content.It is a splendid conceptual study of microbiology that I thoroughly enjoyed.I would highly recommend this book for anyone seeking an update on current issues in microbiology.

I am very pleased with the company that I bought this book from. They had the description of the book and when I received the book it was in the exact condition that they had stated. This was my first experience buying a book from Amazon and I am very pleased with everything.

Inexcusable
This is easily one of the worst textbooks I've ever read, which makes my current class of calculus infinitely more difficult as a result. I've never taken calculus before, but I've enjoyed other math classes due to the easy, accessible texts and a good teacher to complement them. The book is simply not user-friendly to anyone outside of those who have taken calculus in some form beforehand, or even those who have.

The chapter examples are predominantly where most of the action goes down, and the authors often use simple examples (never mind giving explanations on how they solved the problem, often my classmates and I had to take too much time to diagnose what the author did from one step to the next due to a lack of a step-by-step process), and not only that, but they save the easy stuff for themselves to explain away and save the headachers that need explaining for the reader! Even my professor from time to time had to take too much classtime to try and reason out the author's muddled intentions rather than teaching the planned lesson.

In short, this was an easy paycheck to some of the laziest group of Ph.Ds I'll ever see.

Practical Calculus
Having returned to school for another degree, I was forced to take yet another calculus class or write a paper about calculus so, I figured a little review never hurt and I'd get a good grade.

I have decided that out of all of the calculus, differential equations, etc., that I took in college getting that engineering degree, I like this book the best.Good examples of practical applications for economics and social sciences without a lot of "prove thats..."

My only beef would be for first time calculus students who are weak in algebra as some of the problems lack examples within the text.

Math For Managerial life

This is the kind of book I have been looking for!It is great and deliverly was within time.Presented in away that is easy to read and understand without a teacher.Next time I need a book, I know where to go.

A Terrible Book, Not Worth the Money
Even at Amazon's $160.00, so-called deal, this book is not worth the money.Why colleges and universities even consider to use this text is beyond me.The chapters come in non sequitur groups of 2 and 3.For a book focusing on current applied mathematical problems, it is a travesty that no bibliography or references pages exist!This gives me the impression that many if not all of the examples and exercises in the book are fabricated.

Any single-semester university course centered around this textbook will likely come across as an extremely low-brow course on finance (fixed and continuous interest rates) and optimization (simplex method) or a low-brow course on probability.In either event, there are far more suitable texts for such classes.It is plain that the topics are hardly covered in a way to be useful for any academic or practitioner in the "Managerial, Life and Social Sciences."

For example, in the section on Bayes' Theorem (Section 7.6) the statement of Bayes' Theorem followed by 30 so-called "real-world" problems, each indistinguishable from the next save only in the numbers used in the problem.We are given 'statistics' of males and females.At the end of the problem one finds the following:Source: Department of Justice.Really?So much time supposedly spent collecting and surveying real-life sources and the problem ends up looking any other made-up problem in a probability book.Again, why use a book that cannot back up claims to have interwoven real-life with classroom mathematics and pay so damn much for it?

Shame on the publishers for making a ninth edition practically identical to the 8th edition.See for yourself, buy the 8th edition used for under $20 and borrow a copy of the 9th edition.The text, exercises and examples are exactly the same.This is a huge problem in my eyes, not only are universities continually using this book, they are (not doubt, delightfully) forcing students to buy this dubiously "new & improved" edition at a ridiculous price.

Ironically, on the back cover of the instructor's edition, Brooks/Cole offers 5 easy ways to keep the price of textbooks down.Presumably, this is only seen by the instructor after the book is chosen for the course.I offer easy-way-to-save number 6: avoid this book altogether.Encourage your students to buy the 8th edition for a fraction of the price.

I hope students and those in charge of coordinating curriculum alike will take notice and allow this book to fade in to oblivion.

Lastly, it is knee-slapping hilarious to note that it is not the author's picture located inside the cover of the book.Upon the first and second glances, one thinks that since Chris Shannon's picture is on the front cover AND the inside cover along with a short biography that she must be other.Nope.Not even close, as the school she teaches at is in California and S.T. Tan teaches in Massachusetts.In case you were wondering, you have to flip past the publisher's pages, title pages and table of contents to find Professor Tan hiding in the corner.

While pointing out these pictures is indeed funny, we come to another sad feature about this book.Though it tries to focus on mathematics used in the real world, as in settings outside of academia, the only people 'featured' in the book are university professors.

If you are even thinking about using this book, please please please, I implore you, pick another.

Worst Textbook EVER
This has got to be the worst textbook I have ever had the displeasure of having to study by.The chapters have no logical flow (the authors sell it as "self-contained chapters"), the problems make no sense, and the answers to the end of chapter products are wrong as often as they are right.I honestly learned a few concepts presented here better from Lehninger's Biochemistry.

Physical chemistry for the life science.
It was fast, didnt even know it was an international shippment, arrived sooner than the textbook sent to me from domestic sellers. GOOD JOB.

My favorite undergrad physical biochem textbook
Don't be misled by the title.This book isn't just a physical chemistry textbook "dumbed down" for biologists and biochemists.It's true that the material is introductory, but the authors don't shy away from the fundamental mathematics and their explanations of the underlying physical and thermodynamic concepts are exceptionally clear.

Further, the text moves beyond thermodynamics and kinetics (standard fare in intro p-chem) to introduce simple quantum chemistry, spectrometric theory, and approaches to biological structure determination (NMR and x-ray crystallography).

This book proved invaluable in my p-chem courses and in later structural biology courses.
