1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointed
This book, which was probably very good in the 1970's is woefully lacking in currently applicable information.Too much of the text is taken up by documenting projects that failed.A far better book on hydroponics, and worth every penny of the additional $8 cost, is "How-to Hydroponics, Fourth Edition" by Keith Roberto. While this book is supposedly updated as of 1999, it barely scrapes the surface of current hydroponic technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb introduction
Cannot recommend it more highly to survivalists and those interested in growing their own food year round inside a greenhouse. This book is one of the rare treasures I prize in my survivalist library and I sure hope mycopy is intact after TEOTWAWKI - I may have it laminated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent do it yourself guide
I was an absolute beginner in hydroponics before reading this book. I have since planned a simple easy to use system for my need with his ideas and diagrams. VERY EASY TO DO.I am most interested in extremely small-scalehydroponics, which this book is perfect for. He outlines several homemadesystems made out of spare parts and plumbing. One even fits on awindowsill. My favorite part is that the book is a reprint and he honestlybrings his original theories and ideas up-to-date by sharing his 10 yearsof experience. The author is concerned with self sufficiency, soalternative energy sources are a big part of the plan.I plan on using hisPVC pipe method to grow in my south facing windows in the winter. Wish meluck.

Summary: Excellent information on all aspects of small scalehydroponics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook for hydroponic hobbists.

1-0 out of 5 stars Secrets to a successful greenhouse business
The book i ordered was 18 yrs old and not up to date. Plus, i was over charged for a book that costs $19.95 on the back of the book and i was charged $29.95 plus s&h of $10.00. I won't buy from amazon.com ever again.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK,
HAVE READ COVER TO COVER 3 TIMES IN A MONTH. ALL THE INFORMATION FOR THE MOST PART IS TRUE.SEVERAL TECHNOLOGY CHANGES HAVE OCCURED SINCE BOOK WAS WRITTEN, BUT NOT MANY.
THE BUSINESS SECTION IS "SPOT" ON AND THE CONNECTIONS LISTED IN THE APPENDIX ARE PROOVING VERY VALUABLE.

ITS THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT I'VE EVER HAD FOR A "HOW TO" BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad!
I ordered a used 2008 copy and overall it seems to be an informative book. I haven't read it cover to cover, however the book jumps around a bit. On page 74 a paragraph is talking about greenhouse flooring and then the next paragraph talks about operating cashflow? I guess it kinda ties in with construction.

For the most part i think it was worth the money. Its an outline in my eyes, you'll need to do some more homework before jumping in, this book isn't the last one you'll have to buy. I think if you pair up with "Hydroponic Food Production" -- Howard Resh-- youll be set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of a successful greenhouse and business

5-0 out of 5 stars Plan to Succeed

Review below BySteven Carruthers Publisher Hydroponic Magazine - Australia

Secrets to a Successful Greenhouse and Business is written for the beginner or serious home gardener who wants to start a profitable home-based business growing plants in a greenhouse, or for educators looking for specialized classroom projects. It is also valuable text for existing commercial growers, if only to revisit some of the basics from time to time. Divided into 11 sections, Secrets to a Successful Greenhouse and Business will tell you everything you want to know to get started in a greenhouse business. The book covers all major growing systems including hydroponics, organics, and good old-fashioned soil cultivation. It includes a basic plan to build a solar greenhouse, and information on soil and fertilizer mixes, insect and disease control, marketing, and guidelines to organize your greenhouse business. The section on Selling, Marketing, and Economics is especially useful for new comers to greenhouse production. Gone are the days of growing plants on speculation and hoping to find a market before the crop is harvested. The first step in any successful horticulture business is to identify your market, and to grow what the market wants. This section offers some valuable insights into how to go about that. The text explores the marketing process and includes developing sales concepts and marketing strategies, as well as establishing a realistic budget. I can't think of another text that says it better. There are also special treatments for marketing hydroponic and organic products, as opposed to soil-grown products. The section on Greenhouses is succinct. The author leaves no stone unturned in his endeavor to cover every aspect of greenhouse production. Topics include environmental control, choosing the right greenhouse covering, operating costs and cash flow, ideas to improve your greenhouse, and much, much more. This section also includes a basic solar greenhouse plan, including a detailed inventory of materials (imperial measurements). The section on Specialized Projects with Excellent Profit Potential examines the major soil-less culture growing systems that are used in todays modern greenhouse, with a focus on greenhouse tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, tropical fruits, and ornamental plants. There is also a special treatment for school greenhouse programs. There are few greenhouse texts that go beyond the hardware of a greenhouse business. This text does. The section on Guidelines to Organizing Your Business is about turning into actions. According to the author, people don't plan to fail they just fail to plan. In this section, apart from highlighting the need for good planning, the author explains the basic steps for organizing your greenhouse business. These include on sight considerations such as obtaining zoning ordinances and building permits, and types of financing, right down to Workers Compensation. Another section on Delivery, Collecting, & Using Computers, is a practical guide for those processes. The author covers everything including packing and labeling, box construction, and how to start with a small business computer. The author provides a practical explanation of the World Wide Web and its importance for communication, to quickly find or exchange technical and market information, or to develop new markets. The author also includes a lists of useful websites. This book is published in the Unites States, for a North American readership but its wealth of information gives it international appeal. If you are thinking of starting a greenhouse business, then this book is for you wherever you are. It is full of tips, ideas and resources, and generously illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Hydroponics Book
This was one of the first books I got when I was first developing an interest in hydroponics. You can find more about that at my Blog, http://theweedlessgarden.blogspot.com/ If you have even the slightest interesting in hydroponics, get this book.It is clear. It is copiously illustrated with full color pictures. The authors share their love for hydroponics and grow the greatest variety of plants imaginable.I was blown away by hydroponics grown potatoes and radishes for example.

I continue to page through this book for inspiration.I've been growing hydroponically for about eleven or twelve years now and it continues to be an exciting hobby and you get such great tomatoes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow! I see why this book sold 60,000 copies.
I'll make this short and sweet. Buy this book and read it; you'll be inspired to investigate the world of hydroponics. The author's enthusiasm comes across and makes one want to start experimenting before the book isfinished. The full color pictures tell a story all their own. You can seewhat it's all about. I never considered that there were so many types ofhydroponic methods. Dr. Sutherland extensively covers various plants andtheir needs. He recommends certain vegetables as his favorites and why. Thebig three mediums seem to be: perlite, vermiculite and "growool".If there was a negative to the book it would only be that the author is inAustralia, so most of the appendix is directed toward Australian and NewZealand suppliers. Thanks to the internet I don't think that is such a bigdeal. If you haven't guessed it by now, I enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best on topic for beginner, excellent.
I have read the local library copy of an older copyright of this book.It is excellent and my current gardening for myself is being restructured to many of the ideas given in this book.My parents just moved into a mobile home and still wanted to garden. The ideas in this book will provide them with a wonderful hobby as well as a potentially higher productive, cost effective, long lasting garden area.Very usable for mom who is physically limited by age and bending over abilities. A 5 tier plastic pipe unit will be used for top crops, and a framework lined with agricultural plastic from a local dairy will be used for root crops in a "bin" about 30" high.I will use a combination of "soils" for this by combining several types of mediums.Sawdust, some potting soil, composted manure and then super charge this mix with nutrients and watering with a hydroponic solution.Wish us luck and a productive year! I am going to order this newer volume of the book for myself. ... Read more

This was for someone else. They appeared to be happy with the information and benefitted.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tough Read for some!
This is an in DEPTH book on hydroponics.I want to grow some veg's and berries thru hydroponics, but you get the most involved system on the planet. You have temperature, bugs, plant food mixtures (hundreds of them), and then the equipment, fans, lights, greenhouse. As near as I can tell...it will cost you about $200 a tomato
when all is said and done. I must be missing something, but I have to wait until I get my water tested to see what kind of PH I need to up/down...so I can grow something. If you have a PHD in Ag, then this book might spur you on. But, for the average guy out here....I say "Nay...Nay".

Editorial Review

Product Description
With over 45,000 acres of greenhouse vegetation currently being grown hydroponically throughout the world, hydroponics has become one of the most rapidly expanding new areas of plant research. Although growing plants without soil has been practiced since ancient times, hydroponics-the growing of plants specifically in water or nutrient solutions-has shown itself to be the most cost-effective way of maximizing yield, eliminating plant disease, minimizing labor costs and getting the most out of limited land resources. It's both an economically and ecologically sound approach to field-crop production and soil management.Successfully practicing hydroponics, however, requires a working knowledge of the mechanics of plant growth and a firm grasp of the hydroponics process. Hydroponics: A Practical Guide for the Soilless Grower clearly explains the basics of plant growth and development, the different methods of preparing and using hydroponic nutrient solutions, and hydroponic options for various environmental conditions. It gives the reader instructions for simple experiments and a number of helpful charts, tables and illustrations.Completely up-to-date, the book also describes, in detail, all the latest techniques for hydroponic growing. It addresses new challenges in the field such as growing food for astronauts, practicing hydroponics in inhospitable environments and updating nutrient element supplies for the demands of the next century. It's an ideal guide for anyone interested in plants and how they grow-from casual hobbyists and students to commercial growers and professional plant researchers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A "Practical" (??) guide
The title of this book indicates that it has some some of how-to information in it. But that is not the case at all. It has lots of information on the nutrient solution, but it not really helpfull if you are buying yours premixed.
The book totally lacks conclusions that is needed for decisions when setting up you own system. In other words not a how-to book, so only two stars since I'm so disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am not a pro, when it comes to hydroponics. That's why I got this book.It has helped me immeasurably.

I have been assisting a relative of mine, who is the director of a charter school in New England, to put together a hydroponics program for her science classes.(Our idea has been to give her students a tiny little bit of power over their own physical well-being, in case terrorists do more evil things to our economy). At any rate, this book is incredibly helpful to us.

The author of this is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia. He has decades of experience in agronomy, and in plant science in general. He has tailored this book for a wide audience, and assumes NO prior knowledge of the topic. He walks the reader through a very thorough, patient discussion of the value of various nutrients to a hydroponic system. There are graphs and charts to illustrate his points, but don't be scared off!!He makes his points quite clearly in the text.

After discussing the chemical basics of the topic, Professor Jones walks us through a careful comparison of the basic kinds of hydroponic set-ups.He explains water regulation, pest control, nutrient solution distribution, and a lot of other things I would NEVER have thought of if he hadn't directed my attention to them. There's a really good bibliography at the end, which lists a lot of related resources.

Basically, this book is really helpful. One word of caution -- it's more of an overview of what you will need to know, than an actual how-to book.If you're looking for a how-to book, try Howard Resch's titles.Still, this book will really help fill in a lot of blanks, and help you be confident that you know what you're doing. Two thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars General basic foundation for hydroponics
The book gives a good overall understanding of hydroponics so that a beginner (like myself) can feel confident in a general knowledge of the subject to get started. The only complaint I had is that the author goes through a variety of hydroponic systems and describes them all. For someone that wants to try and build their own that could be a bit of a time waster.

I have read several books on hydroponics and have found this to be the most comprehensive and useful (this is the first book I have read by this author). There are things I would have liked to have seen included, such as what size pumps that are needed for different applications, or how to determine this, but the book is full of useful information. The education and experience level of the author seems to be much greater than that of other hydroponics authors whose books I have read.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a greater knowledge of how to develop a small scale hydroponics program. ... Product Description
Do you love growing things... like flowers... herbs... or vegetables?
Do you want to garden... but don't have the yard space to grow anything? If so, then you've found the right book!

Everyone loves greenery! The fresh feeling... the sense of life... and homegrown vegetables.

Gardens increase the quality of your home -- making them livelier with a garden and the greenery.

As a culture, in our everyday hectic lives, we've become too sterilized and cut off from our roots in nature and that's why we need parks, plants, and gardens. Without them, something just seems missing.

But many of us don't live in a place that has room for a garden or a lot of plants... We either don't have the yard-space, or we don't want to make a mess with all the soil.

But there's a way around these obstacles...Hydroponic gardening is a form of gardening that doesn't use soil. Instead, you take advantage of light, air, and water.

You use some other medium than soil to grow your plants, or sometimes nothing at all. There are many different ways to grow plants with hydroponics, but the basic concept is the same.

With hydroponics you’ll be able to use modern techniques to grow plants where plants couldn't grow before -- Like your apartment…Or dorm room…Or wherever!

All that matters is that you can now grow more plants in more places than you thought possible.

Without hydroponics, you could be missing out on some great opportunities to grow that garden you've always wanted.

But most people have no idea how to even start with hydroponics because they just don't know the fundamentals of it.

This is a complete guide to hydroponics written in simple, understandable language so that you can easily learn all there is to know about growing a great garden with a hydroponic system. Things like:

- The History of Hydroponics: The intriguing history of hydroponics past!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book needs a lot of work.
I was very dissapointed in this book. It's not up to date and and seems more focused on bag growing than anything else. It would help if the author would add some illustration to this book. If you want a good book to read on hydroponics you'd better look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lt. Columbo Teaches Hydroponics
After seeing a friend's copy of Saffell's book all I can say is "thank heaven I didn't buy this!" Hilmur possibly is a great hydroponicist and insightful marketer of plant materials; but aftersubmitting to his stumbling, barely-linear ramblings and tangentialexplainations if felt like a murder suspect zeroed in the sights of Lt.Cloumbo. "Oh yea, just one more thing..sorry I didn't mention itbefore..just a loose end to tie up..."

For the beginning hydroponicspractitioner who might find Howard Rush's HYDROPONIC FOOD PRODUCTION: ADefinitive Guidebook of Soilless Food-Growing Methods a little too much indetail and information, I recommend his simpler and more hobby/homegardener oriented HYDROPONICS: Questions And Answers for SuccessfulGrowing. Don't waste your time or money on Saffell's Shoe Strings!

1-0 out of 5 stars Skip this book
While the book isn't completely worthless, it is very poorly written - it needs a good editor. The author states at the beginning that the reader should read completely through before acting on anything and that's goodadvice, because the book is full of "oh, by the way, you need to do(this) first" sections. The author's description of hydroponicmethods is very vague and unclear, and includes very, very fewillustrations to clarify matters. ...
