Probably one of the best handbooks on HVAC pumps. Arrived quickly and in good condition. The book is hardcover. Paper quality is not the best but acceptable.

Don't Waste Your Time or Money
I have to agree with the 1rst reviewer of this product...I took the HVAC exam 10/2009 and failed. I decided to purchase some study material to prepare me for the second go and so I purchased this book. One would have to believe that i have an advantage here becuause i've seen the direction which the state of California has taken in their exam and I recollect a good portion of the question enough to say that if i saw similar questions they would jump out at me....Nope...not with this study guide. with the exception of some familiar charts and diagrams the material is bad. The questions are no where similar or remotely close to what was on my exam, the information provided before every practice exam is minimal and then they go and throw in some true and false questions that are useless because there are no true and false question on the state exam. if that isn't a dead give away

The book gives tips and information about taking the exam and mentions that we are asked to mark our answers by completely blackening the answer space...WHAT?

This book must be outdate by eons because everybody knows that the exams are on computer not on paper...

Take my word for it this is a complete waste of time and money i'm sending my copy back as we speak...

Definitely NOT a good Study Guide
First, the book comes with an Errata Sheet for all of the answers that are incorrect in the book.Second, I'm going through this book and second guessing myself on answers, having to go pull resources, because there are even more incorrect answers.They should have gotten it together on the first pass or at least made sure the second pass was correct.You will not master anything by reading this book.Each section is totally lacking in information about the subject matter.The only way that this book can be used as a study guide is by using the questions that are in it and looking up the answers on your own because you can't trust the book.It was a waste of money. I would have rather paid $100 for a good book than the $30 I wasted on this one. ... Read more

Invaluable reference tool and study guide
As a first year HVAC student, I found this book to be an excellent "go-to" source for much of the information being presented to me on a daily basis. The charts, diagrams, and pictures are an excellent source of information. This book not only covers older units, it covers newer technologies also. All three books in this series will find a home in my office.

More than sufficient for the novice...
I work as a Plumbing Pro at a home center, and purchased this book to help me field HVAC questions from customers. For anyone attempting to do their own work on heating applications, I'd highly recommend it. Because I live in Alaska, I can't comment on the Air Conditioning element, but would assume that information is just as useful.

This book is 15 years out of date.I was hoping for a reference book but I found this book so light on information that it is virtually useless.It could have been written as a pamphlet, ten pages in length, worth maybe $5.00.Don't waste your money.

Good introduction despite some errors
this is a good book for a technician or an engineer trying to get up to speed on the subject. Some typos and misprints are amusing. There are a number of disconnections between the illustrations and the text whichoccasionally make for difficult reading.

needs an update for current technology
The main reason I got this book was to help me size a furnace for the house and calculate the size of the duct system. I only partially got what I needed.The examples for duct sizing started well, but fizzled out as it did not show how to include the effects elbows and other attachments in the calculation and is also missing other pertinent information.Interestingly enough, the discussion of Duct Sizing started in Volume 1 which I got from the library, but the juicy stuff was postponed to Volume 2 which I purchased, and perhaps the end of that discussion appears in Volume 3, which I am not going to purchase.This seems to be a business driven decision which I found quite distasteful.A well written book should self containing as much as it can be helped.Also lacking is a good discussion on more modern two stage furnaces and thermostats.Pages dedicated to Mercury thermostats are a bit outdated, maybe by 50 years. Not for home owners. Excellent for tradesmen!
I am a journeyman plumber. I'm 24 years old and have not read the entire book yet. I probably haven't even read half of it. But I love this book! I probably would have paid a hundred dollars for it.It's not a book for the home owner to reference to without any knowledge of what he is doing! If your a homeowner and don't mind getting your hands dirty and will read the book, you will probably know more than the service man if you would have called one.It's very detailed and covers a range of things and makes and models. So it's very hard to just open the book and learn just about your own model. You have to learn them all and the principles of it all. Which makes it great for someone in the field of repair/service.

Not for the homeowner
If like me you're a homeowner looking for advice how to tune up your oil burner, don't waste your time with this book. It's some sort of study guide for tradesmen and did not answer my questions.
