Verdeyen Laser Electronics
The definitive work on laser engineering. A good reference for all things laser. It's also a pretty good read, for a textbook. A copy of this probably belongs on the bookshelf of anybody in the laser/photonics field. There are many errors in it, for example the Einstein A coefficient listed for the Ne laser transition, so numbers should be double checked against other references.

The book will work for the student who is sufficiently prepared in quantum mechanics and electromagnetism.If one were to learn laser physics without the background of these classes, then they would be doing themselves a great disservice.

The book covers lots of the "bare-bones" topics essential to understanding lasers.However, the book comes to a screeching halt when advanced derivations need to be completed, leaving it up to the reader to figure it out.The book does have extensive reference lists at the end of each chapter to supplement those deficiencies.

Unfortunately there will not be a future edition to this book. This book is probably the best fit for a senior undergraduate course and not a graduate course (Yariv is probably a better fit at this conjuncture). The senior undergraduate will have to work hard in order to get the most out of this book!

Could have been great - but this book sucks
This book has incredible potential. This could have been a great book. But unfortunately this book really sucks. The author only gives partial explanations while he is deriving formulas. There is not enough information given to follow and learn the subject matter while following his derivations. This book should only be used by people who know how to derive all the equations. So if you don't know the material before purchasing this book then don't waste your money.

An excellent reference book for lasers.
This book is definately not for the novice.This book covers a large amount of material in its 777 pages.I got this book as an undergraduate for an advanced optics survey course.It was a little sparse on the explanations for an undergraduate.In graduate school however, this text has come in handy a number of times to fill in the gaps from other books or in heavy-duty problem solving.His coverage of gain saturation, broadening and line-widths I thought were especially usefull, as well as his coverage of the ABCD matrices.All in all, a must-have for your optics bookshelf. ... Short on technical detail, long on "product placement"
This book could be helpful to a DIY boatowner with more dollars than sense who has an aversion to hiring qualified help, or for a recipe-trained technician without theoretical background who wants some more recipes and an excuse to buy more expensive toys. For the fully-qualified electrical/electronic engineer or technician who already has a good understanding of electrical engineering concepts and the use of electronic test equipment, it looks more like a collection of directions and application notes for specific products. This is mostly information I would expect to find in the manuals for specific instruments or on their manufacturers' websites. There is a niche for a book that does what this book SOUNDS like it does from the title and blurb. Unfortunately, for my money, this is not that book.

This is a well researched and written "help book" for the new and experienced Captain of the sea, lake or river.

New approaches to Marine Electronics for the boatyard
I just got ABYC instructor Ed Sherman's new book on Advanced Marine Electronics "Advanced Marine Electrics and Electronics Troubleshooting", it's a Marine Electricians guide to new techniques (Like TDR), new tools and methods for the Marine Electrician. It's an adjunct to the powerboaters guide.

BTW: TDR Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is based in conductor reflection timing (on a return pulse) which used in testing wiring and optical fiber.

Minor Wants: More. I'd have liked a deeper Oscilloscope section and more engine electronics (J1939) stuff and NMEA2000. Pictures are profuse and clear. I started reading the ASE Advanced Performance series in conjunction with this book and would have liked more of the engine electronics integration knowledge brought here. (Picoscope type stuff). Would also like selection criteria for quality electronics (e.g. explain NITS or candela and contrast levels for visibility, a better explanation on pulse width modulation and motor control where the terms are used in the text. Explaining the NMEA 2000 technical architecture deeper would be nice. The author states that it is an additional book for the ABYC electrician and electronics installer, but some basics on electronics would help. 200 pages is too short, but it's a great book.

BTW: Pulse Width modulation (PWM) is a means of controlling a (DC) motor's speed by providing longer or shorter pulses (from a onboard systems microprocessor). More "On" time means faster speed. (Think flicking a fan switch on and off.)

This book is a must get, yet I am only left wanting more. A 2nd edition would be have to get. I loved the ground loop explanation and the need for isolation on network systems on boats.

One of the best parts is the stuff the electronics tech can build.

BTW: When electronics have more than one point of grounding, EMI (electronic noise is propagated through the system. Problems can occur with networks like cheap ethernet (which is why opto isolation is recommended) on boats where ground loop noise is severe. A ground loop is a bad thing, in your network and in your home stereo (causes a hum).

Like any book under a million pages on the subject, there is a lot more you want. His advice focuses on hand held Microprocessor test tools. This is excellent guidance for average marine electronics tech, although I am not likely to give up my old Tek 11801C TDR or my SD-24 sampling head for the stuff I do.

The old technique, new technique section locked in the 5 star rating for me.

Not Impressed
I was not impressed with this book. It seems that the author was going for breadth but in his attempt neglected to go into the detail necessary for someone unfamiliar with power electronics. I liked the fact that the author introduced many practical considerations but without good coverage of the basics this book is useless except as a reference.

In short, lots of coverage, not enough detail.

A great reference after you've taken the course
This was the required book for my college's power electronics course.Like a lot of college books, it's hard to understand without any help from a professor or other students.However, once you've taken the course this book becomes a very useful reference.It is well-organized and contains a lot of information.When I need a refresher on switching power supplies I'm going to look at this book first.

Straight forward and easily understood.
Professor Krein knows power electronics. Good book with real world examples and useful example problems. Certainly a good starting point for anyone interested in the applications of solid state devices in a power sense.

very insightful and detailed.
I am doing my thesis on DSP based control of DC-DC Buck converter and I have looked into many different kinds of books.Many power electronic books are either very general/basic theory (best of such kind of books is by Hart) or too practical for someone with academic intentions.On the other hand the book by Philip Krein in full of insights and useful details that are not talked about in any other power electronics books that I have looked into.For example, frequency domain control for DC-DC converters is very clear, percise, and full of insights, it was very useful for me.

pure garbage
This book is total garbage. I have a BS in EE and wanted to learn more about switching power supply design. This book is useless. Instead of explaining the general operation of boost and buck converters with english words, Krein uses these convoluted switching matrices. It's like the following: here's a circuit, and here's its switching matrix, on to the next cicuit. Not insightful in the least bit. He should spend more time explaining with English words what is going on in a circuit instead of just throwing a uninsighful matrix at you. so outdated it should be out of print
This book doesn't even mention active pickups or noisefree single-coil pickups.It lists about 20 major manufacturers, of which I'd only heard about maybe 5 of them, and then I'm a gear head.Of course basic electronic principles haven't changed since this book was written but come on.I generally don't agree with folks who say "you can get all this information on the internet" because there's a value in having everything carefully preselected and gathered in one place, but this book is so dated I would recommend people to use google instead.I regret buying this.

A good electronics primer for guitar...
I ordered this book as a reference for changing out the cheap electrics in my offshore guitar. The understanding that I gained is invaluable and I now have much more confidence in my electronics-oriented guitar projects. The reason for the four star rating is I found the book to be a bit dated as far as what is available today. The glossary of terms and explanation of pickup types alone is worth the price of the book...

Needs to be updated!
This book may have been cutting edge when it was first published but it needs to be scrapped and updated. Too much info about Shecter pickups and stuff nobody uses anymore. Some good information about how the electronics work, pots, switches pickups etc. Modern guitars have piezos, midi pickups. There was a brief mention of piezos but nothing on midi. There are lots of new pickups on the market and these are discussed either. Still, I found the book informative just not current.

C.J. Savant, et al, have done a fine job in creating this textbook for the undergraduate level engineering/physics student. However, one should be extremely cautious when using this text. Don't accept the book's content without careful review of the material. Throughout the textbook, I have found many errors in principles and "useful formula" derivations. Mostly arising from simple algebraic mistakes - but they are always present in most every chapter; some worse than others. Chapters 2,3 and 4 have the most. Additionally, there are numerous "answer/solution" calculation errors in both the "drill exercises" and end of chapter problem sets. In many sections, when an answer is given, check your own work carefully; the answer printed in the book may not always be the correct one! Finally, overall, this is a good book for a 1 or 2 semester undergraduate course in basic electronics with practical, real world design problems. At the expense of validity, the textbook could have been reviewed a little more carefully before publication.

Get it if you can
This is a very good book.Its explanations on electronic circuits are spot on.Having had to loan it from a library, I hope I can manage to get it (from amazon maybe :) ). Being an engineering student, I found ituseful, but it I know other non-student type people who have said it isvery good. They should start printing it again.....

I used this textbook when I was an undergraduate student 6 years ago, but I still find it an useful reference for my job. Its coverage iscomprehensive and the depth is appropiate. The drill problems let readersto pick up the basic manipulations quickly. In summary, I am lookingforward the updated edition of the book.

introduction to electronics
This is a good bllk but in my opinion it is most oriented to like a check book, no like for learning purpose.

Book needs better editing
This book needs better formatting/editing. It often works through examples that are referenced in a chart/diagram on another page.
I am a Junior Mechanical Engineering student, and the book tone seems a little "dumbed down" for an academic science class, this book works well for those in tech programs that only need to touch on electronics.

Not for engineers
I bought this book to place in my personallibrary as a reference book. I was very disappointed as this book deals with electronics at high school level and is not in depth in any of the topics .Will have to donate it to a secondary school or vocational school .

BIBLE is a BIG WORD to live up to!
After just a few moments of reviewing the book it becomes clear that the author has elected to present the "theory" of marine electrical and electronics systems without much information on practical applications of this information. Although this book would make good course material for anyone studying the subject, the term "bible" implies practical information and guidance which is NOT provided in this book.If you are interested in understanding the theory behind the subject, the book could be helpful, if you need practical information on how to diagnose and solve real problems encountered with existing marine electrical and electronic systems, making new installations, or avoiding electrical problems, you'll probably want to look elsewhere.

Very Useful
10 years ago I used this book to engineer and install the electrical system on an old 60's vintage sailboat.Since then, the boat has been sailed extensively and the system has performed flawlessly.The information on batteries, energy management, and charging is invaluable.

I work in a boatyard, and can honestly say that because of this book there are not many boats that are wired as well as mine.

Good Book not Perfect
It took me a bit to get used to the format of the book, its all outline style, point 1, 1a 1b etc. I did catch some mistakes in some tables... it seemed that wiring sizes in one table were different than another table. I wish some areas had more detailed infomration. But there is a LOT of information here, and he covers every category I can think of. I am currently in the process of rewiring my DC and it is very helpful. I use it in conjunction with Nigel Calder's book, and each has good info. Over all I prefer Calder, but like having both.

Not for powerboaters
It was very hard to tell from the description or the reviews that the book is almost exclusively designed for the wind-borne sailor. For example there is very little on multiple alternator charging systems and all pictures of boats are of sailboats.

one of the best books out there for novices
Designed to accompany the Electronics Technician distance education program (George Brown college). offers a concise and practical overview of basic principles for technician - need only understand high school algebra and trig.

Use it along with the free, student version of CircuitLogix (electronic circuit simulator which utilizes PSpice - allows for the simulation of electronic devices, models, and circuits).

This has to be one of the simplest, take-it-ever-so-easy introductions to analog electronics. If you can't learn electronics from this you never will. Since it's for community college students there's lots of practical info on troubleshooting and basic component identification not found in university books. Another nice thing: each chapter begins with a practical application problem which you'll be able to solve by the end of the chapter. Solution for each is found at end of chapter. Provides wonderful motivation.

Problems good too for practice.

Only downside: some may be frustrated by v. slow pace. e.g.: he only starts putting resistors in series-parallel combination on page 148 of a 760 page book.

Interesting writing style
I bought this book six months ago and decided to research other books by this author.He has a unique writing style that makes it easier to understand some of the more difficult electronics concepts, such as microprocessors.I really liked the book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who is studying to become an Electronics Engineer, but its also good for Electronics Technicians.

Unique and highly informative approach to Electronics
I found this book to be very helpful in my studies of electronics.The author has done a great job in explaining electronics.Most books use a lot of math that can be extremely confusing for first year students, butthis author has found a way to describe the subject without going intounneccesary detail.The book is thorough but not to the point wherestudents lose sight of the fundamentals.

An up to date overview of modern electronic technology
I'd say this book is definitely not for the seasoned professional. But it's a great book for someone who has at least some background in the electronics field, and who is looking for an overview of modern day electronic technology. For instance, I took my core electronic courses forty-years ago, and with that background I made it through the book without too much trouble. The electronics we now take for granted wasn't even dreamed of in those days. So to me, this book was filled with fascinating material, including a good explanation of how all these newfangled electronic gadgets like the cell phone actually work.

Cited as the systems approach to learning about electronics, the author approaches each of his topics as a complete unit, rather than an explanation of the individual electronic components and how they operate. So after a brief introduction to simple circuit components like capacitors, resistors, transformers and a little about Ohms Law, the author takes the reader on a fascinating trip through everything from integrated digital logic circuits, and OpAmps, and power supplies, and computers, to cell phones, antennas, and satellites, to wireless networks, LANS and WANS, audio and video and industrial control technology, as well as a bunch of stuff I haven't mentioned. That's a lot of technical information in just 300 hundred pages, so it moves fast and it got a little overwhelming for me in a few places. But I finished the book and I feel that I learned a lot, which was my goal in reading the book in the first place. I recommend this book for anyone interested in an overview of up-to-date modern electronic technology and its applications.

Great introduction to electronics
My twelve year old son wanted to learn electronics.This book turned out to be ideal for him.He is reading the book independently, and making and testing out the circuits described in the book.The book is at a level that he can understand and develop a good foundation in electronics.Other books that I had given him started out with too much theory and did not develop the concepts from practical experiments that are needed to motivate a child to learn.I recommend this book for those wanting to start electronics with no prior experience or background in electronics.

As I have stated in the title of this review, I am ever so grateful to have found this amazing little book.I am a completely devoted fan of this book.It is written in a SMART way, yet in a clear and approachable way.It manages to be conversational in tone without feeling like the facts are "watered down" or "dumbed down" or in any way "glossed over."

For the remainder of this review, I will attempt to tell my personal story of how and why I read this book.Hopefully this will help you make a buying decision if you are in a similar situation.

I am a computer software programmer.I bought this book while attempting to do well in an assembly language college course.(I should clarify: this book does not teach assembly.... this book teaches about electronic circuitry.)During my studies for the assembly language course, I felt that I was grasping assembly language quite well.However, we (the students) were also required to BUILD very small, simple robots and other computerized boards (either by soldering wires or by attaching wires to a breadboard).Most students had already taken other courses on electronics.I had not ever studied electronics, nor had I ever even so much as touched a multimeter or a resistor or a breadboard.I give this book ALL the credit for helping me pass my college course!This book gave me the skills and the confidence to figure out how to put together very simple robots and circuit boards.Again, I should add another clarification here:note that this book does not give any specific robot information.However, most books that show you how to assemble a robot (or something similar) do **not** actually explain WHY the robot works or explain any of the very small, piece by piece, fact by fact, building blocks of information that would allow you to apply your knowledge independently and flexibly to other endeavors.This book starts with the very, very basics, but it gives you the fundamentals very well so that you can tackle things on your own.

Outstanding book

A great little book to start with...
After a semester of pure theory on characteristics, filters, Fourier transforms, etc., I was fed up and decided to look for a title on beginning hands-on electronics.I read this baby in a few hours and was verypleased.The diagrams included schematics, breadboard dittos of theschematics, and photos of the parts and tools.Very easy to read andcovers resistors, capacitors, diodes, op-amps and transistors.Alsoexplained some graphs(uh oh, more theory).Highly recommended for abeginner, and it's a quick enjoyable read. ... Great for RF Basics and Intro to Smith Charts & Waveguides
We use this book in refreshing/training all of our new engineers that will be working with RF magnetics.The book is written across a very broad variety of topics and is therefore lacking in penetrating detail as others have mentioned.Therin lies the books only real sin - that of trying to cover too much.

If, however, your quest is to dust the cobwebs or get your mind around the 'mysterious' world of RF electronics, this book will be very usefull. Jon's vast experience shows through in the diversity of information, not necessarily the depth of it, which is good for people like me that want to know a little of everything in order to properly frame what I am about to immerse myself in.

In the case of RF Electronics, I would highly recommend Chris Bowick's book "RF Circuit Design" as a companion to this book for those wanting more in depth information at the design/circuit level & for those seeking some more testing guidance to Joseph J. Carr's book "Practical Radio Frequency Test & Measurement".Lastly, if you are either HAM or magnetics-centric, I Highly recommend Jerry Sevick's book "Transmission Line Trasformers".These four books will give you a very solid library & if you are doing PCB layouts, spend the money on Tim Williams "Circuit Designers Companion", it will pay for itself in your first layout with a new engineer.In our experience, these have been the "Fabulous Five", so to speak, of RF Electronics.

great book!
I've read many books on the topic and it is amazing how often we realize that the author has no experience in the field. This is book is the perfect exception to that. While it may not be so easy for beginners, it offers insights that you will only come across if you work in the field for quite some years. Don't expect to be spoon-fed; you'll have to use your brain for a change. And yes, I did take the Cornell course when this book was in the form of some scattered notes and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow, its that bad
This is the second book I have ever reviewed, and only the second book I have felt the need to. You look over the reviews some good some bad, and think, hey I'll try it out. Well let me tell you don't. The book just has no real coherence. It has horrible illegible graphs, no schematics of circuits it actually talks about, and no explanations of the circuits it discusses. It is more a useful tidbit book, if you already knew everything in the book, it might give you a little extra. But man, the amount of information given is near zero if you don't know what's going on.

broad, but not deep.
I used this book when I took the RF Circuit Design class at Cornell. The experience with this book was devastating. It did not give me any good detail of any single RF circuit.I am not sure what kind of background the author expected, but I am sure that this book is not a good choice for a beginner. And if you got a Ph.D. in RF design, why do you wanna read a magazine version of an RF design?

Confusing
I use this book as the standard text of my RF course at Cornell. Honestly, this book is only for casual reading.
Though it covers many topics, but all of them lack in details. For instance, it use 10 pages to explain class A and B amplifier. After reading that 10 pages, I still didn't understand why they are named class A and B. While dealing with modulation, no mathematical details is provided (Does the author assume that we already understand that?) After all, I don't feel this book to be a textbook. The way it treats RF is like a computer magazine treats computer architecture. You learn there are CPU and RAM in a computer from the magazine, but you never learn how to build a CPU or RAM. I did ordered the book from Amazon.com and the seller of the book was thrift book store. But the book I received was wrong and the seller doesn't want full refund of my money that I paid for and doesn't want to exchange or swap with the correct book without paying any money. So rating would be low.

Not the best, but not bad
This book contains everything that you need to learn the subject.However, IT HAS MANY ERRORS IN EQUATIONS AND ANSWERS TO SAMPLE PROBLEMS!The author or publisher just didn't take the time to check for mistakes as well as you would expect from this type of book. Also, I feel that the book is a little disorganized, and jumps around a bit too much for my taste.Also, the formating could be updated as well.Not many terms are defined in bold, nor equations seperated from the text very well.It kinda all blends together.Again, I think that the book teaches and contains all that you would expect it too, I just think it needs some modern touces to bring it into the same class as most "modern" textbooks.(It seems like the appearance and formating are the same as they were in the first edition, except any errors and typos have been fixed in the following editions.)

For what it is, it's quite good
This is the book for you if you are struggling to understand how to apply the basic laws of electronics: Ohm's, Thevenin's, Norton's, Kirchhoff's, etc.This book starts from basic arithmetic, works slowly up through fractions, and only winds up at school algebra about halfway through the book.By the end of the book they've touched on vectors, trigonometry, AC power, and Boolean algebra.These more advanced subjects are all treated at a very basic level: the algebra is simple school algebra, the trig is no more than is necessary to understand vectors, the vector math is only there to make phasor diagrams useful, phasors are only covered to make 3-phase power understandable, etc.

The book's has a tilt towards the world of the industrial electrician, rather than that of the electronics technician.A symptom of this is that inductance is covered before capacitance -- motors are more visible than capacitors -- the opposite of the usual way in teaching electronics.

This book will not teach you electronics, per se.You need to be reading this book along with an electronics text.

This is a text book, not a narrative.It's all here as you remember from your grade school math books: word problems, partial lists of answers in the back of the book, worked example problems, etc.

If you've already read _The Art of Electronics_ by Horowitz and Hill and didn't find the first chapter particularly hard going, this book is way too elementary for you. ... Read more

Enlightening
We are really dealing with a first class book on the subject. In it you can find a lot of greatly useful informations about F.A. from the testing techniques to the study cases.
To me, what I found impressive is the detailed description of the analysis testing techniques covering the technology description of them and the correct case in which recall them.
For sure a book that you will find helpful. Well spent money!

The "Bible" in Failure Analysis
After I read this book, I passed it to my Engineers, and afterwhich I never have a chance to access it anymore, as both my Engineers just won't let go!

This is indeed "THE BIBLE" for Failure Analysis. It covers most of the techniques needed for each type of FA, like X-ray imaging, SAM, Thermal imaging, Metallography, Chemical Characterization, SEM/EDX, and Electronic Failures. The best of it all is that in Part 2, it is organized in terms of equipment techniques; in part 3, it is organized in terms of products, like PCB, PCBA, connection, component, etc. As such it give you the flexibility either go to Part 2 and learn about how and what types of failure analysis a particular equipment can perform, or go to Part 3 and find out the sequence of which equipments is to used first for a particular failure mode.

However, I need to highlight that the though there are tons of photos in the book, the quality of the photos need lots of improvement. Many a times, it takes me long time to figure out what's in the photos. Maybe some highlights or markings at the particular spot of interest in the comparison of the photos would help some novice readers to appreciate better

$400 billion or 16% of the total retail sales are directly influenced by Web.Consumers today are very savvy. They do the research, compare prices online and may not go to the stores to purchase.

Web 2.0, 3.0, E-marketplace, E-tailing, online consumer behavior, online market research, B2B, E-supply chain, corporate portals, E-government, E-learning, social network, mobile commerce, E-security, E-payment, were covered in depth. Definitions and examples are good.

The drawback of this book, is too much theory. There are few real-life cases.

No coverage of global e-commerce success stories, is a major flaw of this book.
