Product Description

Porous materials continue to attract considerable attention because of their wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as catalysis, shape- and size-selective absorption and adsorption, gas storage, and electrode materials. Both research and applications of porous materials—via electroanalysis, electrosynthesis, sensing, fuel cells, capacitors, electro-optical devices, etc.—heavily rely on electrochemistry.

Electrochemistry of Porous Materials focuses on generalized theoretical modeling and describes redox processes for different porous materials, assessing their electrochemical applications. Considering the large variety of materials that can be classified as porous, the text focuses on nanostructured micro- and mesoporous materials. Using this approach, the book offers a more focused and practical analysis of key porous materials that are considered relatively homogeneous from an electrochemical point of view. These include:

  • Porous silicates and aluminosilicates
  • Porous metal oxides and related compounds
  • Porous polyoxometalates
  • Metal-organic frameworks
  • Porous carbons, nanotubes, and fullerenes
  • Porous polymers and certain hybrid materials

With its detailed presentation of advances in electrochemistry of nanostructured materials, this text specifically addresses the foundation and applications of the electrochemistry of microporous materials. It incorporates the latest breakthroughs in applied fields (development of fuel cells, supercapacitors, etc.) and fundamental research (in areas including fractal scaling, photoelectrocatalysis, magnetoelectrochemistry, etc.).

Designed to make the topic accessible and understandable for researchers and graduate students working in the field of material chemistry, this volume approximates porous materials chemistry to electrochemists. Selective and streamlined, it culls a wide range of relevant and practically useful material from the extensive literature on the subject, making it an invaluable reference for readers of all levels of understanding.

Product Description
AN INTRODUCTION TO ELECTROCHEMISTRY by SAMUEL GLASSTONE.PREFACE: The object of this book is to provide an introduction to electro chemistry in its present state of development. An attempt has been made to explain the fundamentals of the subject as it stands today, de voting little or no space to the consideration of theories and arguments that have been discarded or greatly modified. In this way it is hoped that the reader will acquire the modern point of view in electrochemistry without being burdened by much that is obsolete. In the opinion of the writer, there have been four developments in the past two decades that have had an important influence on electrochemistry. They are the ac tivity concept, the interionic attraction theory, the proton-transfer theory of acids and bases, and the consideration of electrode reactions as rate processes. These ideas have been incorporated into the structure of the book, with consequent simplification and clarification in the treatment of many aspects of electrochemistry. This book differs from the au thors earlier work, The Electrochem istry of Solutions in being less comprehensive and in giving less detail. While the latter is primarily a work of reference, the present book is more suited to the needs of students of physical chemistry, and to those of chemists, physicists and physiologists whose work brings them in con tact with a variety of electrochemical problems. As the title implies, the book should also serve as an introductory text for those who in tend to specialize in either the theoretical or practical applications of electrochemistry. In spite of some lack of detail, the main aspects of the subject have been covered, it is hoped impartially and adequately. There has been some tendency in recent electrochemical texts to pay scant attention to the phenomena at active electrodes, such as ovcrvoltage, passivity, cor rosion, deposition of metals, and so on. These topics, vihich are of importance in applied electrochemistry, are treated here at Mich length as seems reasonable. In addition, in view of tho growing interest in electrophoresis, and its general acceptance as a branch of electrochem istry, a chapter on clectrokinetic phenomena has boon included. No claim is made to anything approaching completeness in the matter of references to the scientific literature. Such reformers as arc given arc generally to the more recent publications, to review articles, and to papers that may, for one reason or another, have some special interest. References are also frequently included to indicate the sources from which data have been obtained for many of the diagrams and tables. Since no effort was made to be exhaustive in this connection, it was felt that an author index would be misleading... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor
There is nothing wrong with this book, but everything with its "product description". As you will note when clicking on the Copyright page, this is a reprint of a 1942 book by Glasstone; it is by now two-thirds of a century old. Yet the product description does not state so explicitly, but merely copies the 1942 introduction, which talks about the "present state of development" of electrochemistry, and expresses the hope that "the reader will acquire the modern view in electrochemistry".

That was indeed the object of this book in 1942; the object of reprinting this introductory statement now is clearly to mislead the prospective buyer. ... Read more

Product Description

The book shows how to numerically solve the parabolic partial differential equations (pdes) encountered in electroanalytical chemistry. It does this in a didactic manner, by first introducing the basic equations to be solved and some model systems as text cases, for which solutions exist. Then it treats basic numerical approximation for derivatives and techniques for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations, from which the more complicated methods for pdes can be derived. The major implicit methods are described in detail, and the handling of homogeneous chemical reactions, including coupled and nonlinear cases, is detailed. More advanced techniques are presented briefly, as well as some commercially available program packages.

This third edition, still the only text on the subject, is structured more didactically than the previous editions. It brings the coverage of electrochemical digital simulation up to date, including many new techniques developed since the early 1990s. A number of example procedures and programs are made available as supplementary material in the online version of this book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Electrochemisty at Metal and Semiconductor Electrodes covers the structure of the electrical double layer and charge transfer reactions across the electrode/electrolyte interface. The purpose of the book is to integrate modern electrochemistry and semiconductor physics, thereby, providing a quantitative basis for understanding electrochemistry at metal and semiconductor electrodes.

Electrons and ions are the principal particles which play the main role in electrochemistry. This text, therefore, emphasizes the energy level concepts of electrons and ions rather than the phenomenological thermodynamic and kinetic concepts on which most of the classical electrochemistry texts are based. This rationalization of the phenomenological concepts in terms of the physics of semiconductors should enable readers to develop more atomistic and quantitative insights into processes that occur at electrodes.

The book incorporates many traditional disciplines of science and engineering such as interfacial chemistry, biochemistry, enzyme chemistry, membrane chemistry, metallurgy, modification of solid interfaces, and materials' corrosion. The text is intended to serve as an introduction for the study of advanced electrochemistry at electrodes and is aimed towards graduates and senior undergraduates studying materials and interfacial chemistry or those beginning research work in the field of electrochemistry.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs an editor; its readers need patience.
For a science text of this type, Sato's book is unusually difficult to read. Its awkward, imprecise, often ambiguous wording is distracting--I find myself asking, "What does he mean?" more often than I ask, "How does that science work out?" That said, the book is reasonably thorough (covering precisely what the title says it does) and a patient reader (fresh graduate student or ripe undergraduate) might learn a thing or two. There are no problems (or solutions). The figures are poor. ... Read more

Product Description
Chemists increasingly apply electrochemical methods to the investigation of their systems, in particular towards a better understanding of molecular properties, the exploration of chemical reactions involving electron-transfer (ET), the initiation of further reactions by ET, the kinetic measurements, and the establishment of the reaction mechanisms, as well as the synthesis (electrosynthesis) of desired products.

Trends in Molecular Electrochemistry presents recent research on procedures in molecular electroactivation and electrocatalysis, bioelectrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and unconventional electrochemistry. The book highlights the state-of-the-art in the application of electrochemistry by taking an interdisciplinary approach to the study of both static and dynamic molecular properties of coordination compounds as well as inorganic, bioinorganic, and organometallic complexes, supramolecular systems, and metalloenzymes. The principles and approaches are often also valid for organic systems, which are illustrated in various contexts. ... Read more
