Not without its problems
The blatant errors in this book can severely hinder progress. I have had to read and reread examples from the book that did not make sense so I could understand what was going on. I am reading the book now and there are literally dozens of errors in some chapters. For example (5/7 * 1/3 = 15/7)?and ((5/7)*(2/3)^n [n=1]=5/7)? Both of these examples were on ONE page, and the page before that had two errors and the page before that had one error. These errors will make concepts even more frustrating to learn if your having a hard time with the subject. Because of this I would definitely recommend staying away from this book.

Helped me understand Calculus
This book really helped me understand the concepts of Calculus. I took Calculus II last year and had to drop it. I decided this year I would get this book so I could make sure I was successful. The writer is humorous and pretty good at explaining the basic concepts as well as pointing out the most important formulas needed.There are a few typos in the book and I even confirmed with my teacher to make sure. However, they are minor enough to not detract from the purpose of the book.

The book I owe bigtime.
I am a Calculus II student and have been struggling to thoroughly grasp the concepts in the class.The textbook simply cannot own up to the level of clearness and helpfulness this book offered.I'm not saying you don't need a text book (god no), I'm just saying this is an excellent reference.I had a particularly hard time with Integrals in the area of substitution and integration by parts.This book just cleared things up and set me back on track to success.

Get this Book! You won't be sorry!
I just got this book today. I have been reading the book for about 45 minutes. I am in calc 2, so I was reading on Riemann Sums and now Integrals. I have seriously learned more in this 45 minute reading session than 2 weeks of class. I had no idea what was going on in class. I had no idea about Riemann sums and the formula with sigma made me anxious. The author tells you not to even worry about the sigma notation.

Buy this book. You won't be sorry you did. Sometimes we need to know the background as to why things are the way they are in calc and this book provides that and conveys it in layman's terms, as you would expect because of the title.

Clear and concise book for Calculus-1
The key ingredient that makes this a great book is that it is approachable and understandable. It is more approachable than many textbooks like Rogawsky or Stewart and does not pretend to compete with these. It's focus is demystifying things. How does it do it? It relates calculus to everyday uses, it delves into the what and why rather than focusing on the how. Unfortunately, standard textbooks, get deluded into covering tons of material and how to do things, but they forget the fundamental ingredient of explaining why you would even be interested in studying the subject. It is assumed that you already understand why or what. They've got it wrong.

If you work with this book together with a textbook, you won't get lost easily as you can always come back to this book to find a common sense, simple rationale that allows you to go back and dive into the details of the big textbook.

If you're not good in math, don't buy this book.
The book isn't really helpful. It already assumes you have prior knowledge. The exercises are too simple and the author doesn't explain that efficiently. Moreover, the book didn't help me much for my calculus class. For those reasons, I gave it 2 stars

Almost useless for any college calculus course.
The book is decent at explaining concepts, but so are most math professors.You may find it a little more readable than the math textbook because he throws jokes in there, but really this book contains all the same information that you'll find in a textbook, but it skips a lot of important conditions and limitations that you should know of.Also, there is barley any information for calculus 2 in this book, mostly just short explanations and a couple examples per topic.Overall, the practice problems and examples are much too simple to be of any real usefulness to a serious college course, and I think your time would be better spent in the professors office or college math help center.

If you're in college, and struggling with calculus, don't expect this book to help you.It certainty will make things seem simple but that's only because they're showing you simple problems... No serious college prof would ever test on anything as easy as what's shown in the book.So I'd urge you to save your money and head to the professors office, or find some other means of getting help. (you're professor really isn't as scary as you think!)

The only potential use for this book would be for a high school calculus class, but again, don't expect it to help you on the AP test, or if you're teacher likes to give complicated problems on tests.

Invaluable!
As a senior in college and someone who never really took too well to math, I waited until my last semester to take pre-calculus. I was absolutely terrified, especially since it had been three years since taking college algebra. Personally, this book was exactly what I needed! I spent over $100 on the math text book and I never even opened it. Not once. I received my first A in a math class EVER. I would leave class clueless about what the teacher had just said, go home, study the lesson in this book, go back to class and actually understand what she was saying. I gave this book 4 stars because there was a section that was taught in class which was not in here.

DOES NOT cover all pre-calculus topics!
I didn't do enough research before buying this book, but after receiving this book, I've found out that it doesn't cover nearly all off the topics in pre-calculus. For example, it is missing Vectors and Parametric Equations. So, I would not recommend this book if you are taking an Honors Pre-cal course, as this book will disappoint you.

Great for passing CLEP
For my fellow CLEP students:

I studied this book for around 1.5 weeks, and with God's help easily passed the CLEP Precalculus. The book begins at a basic enough level, includes excellent explanations and good practice sections. Clarity and understandable-ness is excellent. The only comparable book I've found with more clarity is Saxon Advanced Mathematics. Another excellent resource - just designed for a longer study period.

I feel that Clep Precalculus is very Clep-able even with an exclusive, yet diligent study of this book.

Grad Student in Need of a Quick Learn
I'm a graduate student in psychology and I need to learn some math fairly quickly for my studies. So not being a "dummy", I decided to leave the "guide" to the idiots and buy a book to "demystify" concepts I learned long ago, and teach me new ones I have not yet come across. Poor Condition
The book arrived on time.However, it was purchased as new condition the cover was damaged.The damage is quire visible and had to be seen by the shipper, so it should nave been caught and not sent to me.Since, I needed the book for immediate use I did not send it back.Even though I am looking for the best price value, I do not desire poor quality.I would have paid more if it was necessary to get a book in true new condition.

great tool when the tutor's office is closed
the book is great - it covers chapters 10 through 17, it has the solutions for all the odd questions (student manuals never give odds and evens). and the solutions are written in a step by step progression that helps cement the correct way to solve the problems. i used the single variable solutions manual for Calc II, and it helped me understand the course enough to finally pass it (with an A), and now that i purchased this manual for calc III I've no doubt i'll pull through again.

HORRIBLE BOOK DON"T BUY
When I first got the book I had good hopes but they were immediately vanished after I started reading it. The explanations provided are limited to almost nothing at all. The entire book is basically 10 examples for each concept provided with no explanations but only shown work that sometimes does not make any sense because of the mistakes in it. Excellent study tool
When you're unsure how to go about a problem, this book goes through attaining the answer in a step by step format. It's a great study tool and I recommend it to all Calculus students.

Not a good solutions manual!!
As with most "official" solutions manuals, this one is pretty much junk. It contains "full" solutions to only odd problems, and those "full" solutions generally skip steps, assume that you've already mastered the concepts (which you obviously haven't at this level), and on occasion, don't even solve problems the way the book recommends. Instead of purchasing a solutions manual for this Calculus book, I'd just recommend using Cramster. For free they've got AWESOME solutions to all odds which clearly explain what's going on, and for ten bucks a month they got you covered on all the evens as well. For some reason this site is not as well-known as it should be, but save yourself some money and headaches and check it out before buying crappy solutions manuals. Just use your favorite search engine for Cramster, it's one decision you won't regret!

Use wisely
When I was reading reviews for this several people complained that the problems and sections do not match up correctly. This is true. The math book this is based on has several versions and things keep getting moved around. The farther you get along in the book, the more that becomes apparent.

But. By checking the index, you can always find the section you need. And by scanning up and down the list of problems they solve, I was usually able to find a problem close enough to what stumped me to help me figure it out. If you want someone to do your thinking for you, don't bother. If you want an extra boost in understanding without the help of extra tutoring, this is perfect.

Does not match the Textbook
This solution book does not match the textbook they sell in the online and it does not include the problems but only have textbook's page and problem's number that it is totally useless. Only if you have matching textbook then you can buy it otherwise do not buy it. I returned it right after I received it three weeks ago but I still did not get credit. Again, Do not buy it unless you are absolutely sure you have matching textbook.

Great for brushing up on more difficult topics
I picked up this little book to help me brush up on Calc 2 and 3 topics so I could pick and choose topics to teach my AP class after the AP exam.The book reads very easily and is full of puns and math humor, including some great examples that will help concepts stick.My one gripe is that the actual problem examples are circumstantial and are not very extensive, so you would definitely have to pick up a textbook and try some problems of the same type before you can say you've "got it"... But I suspect most books of this type are similar.If it were a Barron's book, it would be twice the size, like the Barron's book is!But the topic selection is great and difficult to find in this format.Pick this one up.

Unless your Whole Genome Just Goes "A-D-H-D" this Book Will Help
The bad:
To do the hardest problems in the world, you're gonna need another book and your own gags to soften'm up--maybe a pencil with an eraser that looks like Gallagher's sledgehammer, or Maxwell's silver one. Theory queries need another book.

The good:
If you don't want to feel like killing while reading your math book, this'll feel like learning math from a Mahatma--and girls I've lent it to love it (an'if ya lak my styyyle, comment at me).

Bring Calculus To Its Knees

Should I learn calculus from this book?
I am currently working through this book. Other reviewers have mentioned all the good points and features of this text. However, given the text is 920 pages long, the reader would normally be required to invest a lot of time working with it. With that in mind, it is natural to ask the all important question: whether this book is really for you? My answer is that it depends on your mathematical backgrounds.

As we know, Kline's approach to this book is intuitive. Kline argued that "intuition" is the way human's mind learns things; and he is right on. Especially with calculus whose essence being a collection of "mathematical methods" fundamental to the understanding of physical world. To study these mathematical methods without understanding or appreciating the physical problems or applications which gave birth to their (the methods') development is therefore meaningless and shallow. On this point alone, Kline's approach is a first rate introduction to calculus. On the other hand, Kline's text despite being quite thick never progresses beyond these intuitive functions; instead Kline spends a lot of space discussing elementary topics like analytic geometry and application in economics or examples from Newton' Principia. Very interesting of course, but one cannot find a rigorous discussion of functions or imaginary number or convergence of infinite series, all of which are essential basics for those who would progress to courses in analysis. An important question that it raises is: to whom this text is actually for?

My answer is that Kline's text works best for either those whose high-school math backgrounds is in a pretty bad shape but want to know calculus or for those who have learned calculus a long time ago and are now in "serious need" for some brush-up. Also for certain high school students who like physics but have never been at home with math, this book is really the missing keystone. There are many other good texts out there like Spivak's or Apostol's or Hardy's Pure Mathematics. These are ideal for college students whose high-school math is still fresh and strong and thus are more able to appreciate deeper/advanced topics like the foundation of number system or analytical treatment of functions. For these students (especially pure-math B.S. students), calculus texts that gear toward analysis (i.e. more rigorous) would better prepare them for future challenges.However, for people like myself, whose math education ended 14 year-ago in high school and who barely remember the cosine rule, working through texts like Spivak's or Hardy's simply lead to a bogged down. Kline's calculus, on the contrary, allows me to understand calculus both intuitively and profoundly without having to worry about my mathematical deficiency. What is lacking in rigorous treatment can be remedied by follow-through study of Spivak's or Hardy's text (after completing Kline's) which by then would be with much greater speed, understanding and appreciation.

All things discussed, this book is a truly 5-star treatment of calculus. Given the state of education and teaching in our times, no one might ever write like this again.

Excellent
Kline is an excellent teacher and his philosophy of teaching mathematics is right on, in my opinion. Rigor does nothing for the understanding. How could it? Rigor makes everything neat, generalized, and the notation consistent. It also helps to make sure our intuition isn't playing tricks on us. So, it's important, but does nothing for learning this science. This book will enable you to understand all the important themes of calculus and proves them in a clear and natural way. No formal understanding of proof methods is necessary.

Excellent teaching style
I ordered this book about a month ago and have just started going through it. I really enjoy the writing style and the teaching approach. I have a math degree and know calculus but would recommend anyone who would like to understand calculus from an intuitive approach to also read this book. I am looking forward to how the material will be covered from a practical bent and what generated certain results in the calculus.

A classic, non-rigorous introduction - old world style.
If you have the time, patience, and the inclination to get a strong introduction to Calculus then this book will probably meet your needs.Note I say 'probably' because for many of the young folks today the text may seem wordy and overly pedantic.Kline forfeits the graphical techniques of learning for the verbal.So one has to carefully follow the explanations.Later in the book graphical explanations for things like differentiation are explained.

So if you expect a fast paced text like say 'Calculus for Dummies', 'How to Ace Calculus' etc you will be disappointed.What I found helps is to get going with some modern quickie texts like Dummies etc and then go with Kline's work.This helps firm up some theory instead of just learning the mechanical stuff.Also, as others have pointed out, but this needs to be mentioned, the answers to problems can be obtained via a PDF from Dover.They answered my email promptly.

If you want a good reference for introductory Calculus without say the rigor of Apostol's text this is a great investment that should serve you for years to come.Excellent textbook. ... Read more

Great Calculus III book, NOT Early Transcendentals
This is a great book for College Calculus 3. If your class requires the "Early Transcendentals" edition, this is essentially the same book. It contains the EXACT same material as the Early Transcendentals edition but everything is pushed ahead one chapter. It has the exact same amount of chapters and the exact same questions so don't fret, this book will work for your class. Also the new price on Amazon is usually cheaper than the used price in your university's bookstore! (Note that you most likely won't be able to sell it back to your university because of it not being E.T.). Overall a great way to learn Calculus 3!

Great for Reviewing Calc 1 (or Calc AB)
I bought this book as a refresher since it had been 4 years since I last did any kind of formal calculus class.For that purpose (use as a refresher) this is really a superb text.It offered a quick, plain English summary of a one year high school calc course (Calc AB AP) or a one semester college course (Calc 1 or equivalent).I doubt one could learn single variable calculus from this book alone, but it could also work as a nice supplement for understanding the main concepts of a first year calculus course.

With the exception of one of the later chapters entitled "Integration for Experts", I was able to follow all of the material in the book on first read, making it true to its "For Dummies" moniker.So, again, this is not a book for complete calculus neophytes, but rather a helpful piece of review material or supplemental coverage. ... A remarkable calculus text
I'm a physics and mathematics major at Northern Arizona University, and needed a calculus text that would supplement the three semesters of introductory calculus and make for a great long term reference. This is the book I was looking for. Through calculus I, II, and III I used this book to go over the concepts we learned in class to gain a better understanding of the material, and see more concrete examples. The concepts were clearly written, broken down to understand intuitively, and, if you're like me and enjoy precision, the rigor is there as well.

I've seen a few reviews complaining of the technical and abstract sections of the book. I would like to stress that the book is first and foremost about gaining an intuitive and deep understanding of the material--not to give quixotic proofs of everything under the sun.

If you would rather imitate like a monkey and just pound numbers into formulas and follow cookie cutter recipes to get to the answer without true understanding, you can learn to do that from this book (like any other calculus or engineering book). But if you want a deep lucid knowledge of calculus, this book provides it.

Calculus book in amazing condition
This book was in fantastic shape as described, it had writing on 1 of the pages in the part before chapter 1, other than that, the book was spotless and in great shape. Extremely fast shipper, highly recommended.

Solid Book
This book is pretty solid.I am learing Calculus for the first time and have been very pleased with the format and descriptions.I like that there are bios of people who have contributed to the foundation of Calculus as well.Examples are strong as well.My only gripe would be that some of the examples skip steps, but it's mostly algebra related so I would reccomend a either a strong algebra backround, or also have a source to go to when you need assistance with algebra.

The text gives both precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs, but more importantly intuitive explanations developed and refine through classroom experience with this material are provided. The book includes a self-contained treatment of the probability theory needed for stochastic calculus, including Brownian motion and its properties. Advanced topics include foreign exchange models, forward measures, and jump-diffusion processes.

This book is being published in two volumes. The first volume presents the binomial asset-pricing model primarily as a vehicle for introducing in the simple setting the concepts needed for the continuous-time theory in the second volume.

Chapter summaries and detailed illustrations are included. Classroom tested exercises conclude every chapter. Some of these extend the theory and others are drawn from practical problems in quantitative finance.

Excellent introduction to option privcing
Shreve's book is an excellent introduction to basic options pricing. He not only deals with plain vanilla options, but also shows how the binomial model can be used to to value exotic options. Each chapter has exercises which not only apply what is taught but force you to think and ensure that you really understand it.

Little more than basic algebra is required to understand the text, making it very accessible. His expositions of topics such as martingales, markov processes, etc. are very good. The text can be dense, though--there's a great deal of information.

In short, if you want an introduction of how options can be priced without the partial differential equations in the Black-Scholes model, this is an excellent choice.

Best SC book ever
I have the 1st version (pdf), so I hesitated before I make the purchase. Now it turns out that the book is worthy every buck.

1. Use coin tossing space consistently as working sample. Very intuitive, never get the idea lost in abstract concepts.

2. Detailed workout of examples. Very good for self study.

3. Plenty of hands-on homeworks. Not necessarily very challenging. But provide good amount of extra examples.

If anything the book can add, I hope it can supply implementations, in Matlab or C++. Well, it may be far stretching for a math book.

excellent book for anybody who is a student of financial calculus . One can get some insight into how financial managers plan portfolios and how they make investment decisions.

Great intro for discrete-time models
I studied this book for the first half of a fourth year financial maths subject at univerisity of melbourne. Binomial models are the only feasible model for pricing american derivatives at the moment, so it is worthwhile to learn the mechanics of such practical models. The author proves all his theorems elegantly using mathematical induction. He even uses proability theory and discrete-time martingale theories to simplify the valuation of European-type derivatives (just take conditional expectations and discount straight back to the current time -- instead of doing those backward averaging and discount node by node; both methods are done under the risk-neutral measure).

Ok if you are a mathematician
Good if you know the subject or are a mathematician. Arfken's Mathematical Methods for Physicists book has a section that is better than this book. The problem is that it is not extensive.

Very useful
This book is really easy to get into. The first chapter on its own is worth the purchase price. After thumbing through that, I was in a position to start solving interesting problems. I was up and running with the basics within a day or so. Other books on the Calculus of Variations are a lot harder to get into and much more difficult to readily apply to problem solving.

Other books that present variational principles generally do it formally in terms of Frechet and Gateux derivatives on Banach spaces, whereas here, the approach is a little bit more ad hoc. The former approach can be heavy going for people who aren't comfortable with functional analysis and even then, actually solving specific problems can be headache. Fomin and Gelfand on the other hand demand very few prerequisites from their readers.

Encompassing concise and comprehensible
My acquintance with the book starts with a course in
calculus of variations in Israel Institute of Technology - Technion.
I recommend this book as a prepration for the advanced
methods in chapter 8 of Tensors Differential Forms and Variational Principles - David Lovelock and Hanno Rund. Anyone who is about to study a course in General Relativity should take a year or leisure two years and read both books. I also recommend this book to anyone who deals with
shape matching, signal processing and image processing.

Quite clear, straight-forward explanations
I like this book, certainly what I have read of it. I'm now digging around near page 75, and it struck me that for the first time I really "get it" - In particular, this was about the use of the Legendre transform. The authors start with a very gentle introduction of it, and then, while things become more abstract, the text never jumps too far and never leaves the reader too much in puzzling. It's ought to be studied though, and it's not "easy".

This is one of the worst "dummies" books I've ever read.It was condescending, dull, and poorly written.If you're looking for pre-calculus help, look elsewhere.

Excellent Excercise Book but some mistakes and no errata???
It seems the authors break their own rule in the first chapter on PEMDAS. This is a simple problem, but they wrote it out wrong in answers where they perform addition and subtraction first before multiplication. I think it should be the other way around. i.e. Ex 4 - Ch 1. abs(5 * 1 - 4 + 6) = 7 not 9. Every monkey knows multiplication is performed first. I'm not sure what the authors were thinking starting with subtraction first???I'm kinda blushing here...I punched this into my TI-89 Titanium and I get the same answer as I had come up with for the nominator. Calculators follow PEMDAS rule, so am I missing something here? Please, put an errata up people and have a forum, otherwise your books are useless. This is a refresher for me as I'm going in for calculus next fall. Mistakes as such would flunk a student in those courses...

Calculus made easy
This book has helped me a lot. Not only does it provide a specific summary, it also lists the important equations and rules learned in the chapter. It even has problems you can work and has the full solutions. This book is a must for those who have boring teachers, fall asleep in class, or who just need a review.

DO NOT BUY, poor study material
This book is not a SOLUTIONS GUIDE but a STUDY GUIDE.If give you a few isolated example problems and then has a synopsis of each section.At the end of each section there is a quiz which does not resemble homework problems, or any test problems I have had.I would not recommend this.On the other hand the SOLUTIONS GUIDE is an excellent resource.

Good compact review, but weak on practice problems with fully-worked solutions
This book focuses on the subset of first year calculus topics needed for the AP exams, and it provides comprehensive coverage of those topics. It also includes an Appendix on the use of TI calculator models 83, 84, 86, and 89. A graphing calculator (only certain models are allowed) is now required for the AP Calculus exams.Compared to other preparation texts covering similar AP calculus topics, this book is relatively short, running less than 400 pages.

This brevity is achieved primarily in two ways, one is by providing explanations that are quite concise. Those with solid calculus backgrounds will appreciate this brevity, particularly if they need a text for a final quick review before the AP exams. Others will likely find themselves wanting more detailed explanations and solved problem exemplars.

The second way concerns problem sets. There is a relative dearth of problems with fully detailed solutions, compared to other AP preparation texts, e.g., "Cracking the AP Calculus AB & BC Exams, 2009 Edition" which at 870 pages is over double the size of this text.

Its major weakness is that many of the "fully worked" problems skip important steps. As an example, in problem 24, page 103, the derivative of tan (theta), although a required step in the solution process, is not presented. The geometric/trigonometric steps required to obtain its value in this problem are also skipped. Only the problem-specific value is given in an equation leading to the solution.

The introductory chapter on "Exam Format, Grading, and Tips", although short, is quite helpful. Another useful feature is the occasional aside that explains, for the example presented, the common mistakes that are often made in solving problems of a similar type.

As with some other calculus and AP calculus preparation books, there are errors of omission in word problems involving dimensions. For these problems the authors use 'pure numbers' during the problem solution phase, leaving off dimensions until the final solution. This means there is no check that the final dimensions make sense, or that the problem is solved correctly. The use of pure dimensionless numbers can make work 'cleaner', but it may also mask wrong answers, and it always means that an additional check on the validity of a solution is missing.

In summary: No single preparation text will satisfy all readers. If your calculus background is relatively solid and you need a concise review book this is a reasonable choice.Although the price appears inappropriately high considering the book's relative size, and competitive publishers' discount pricing.If you need more detailed explanations, or lots of practice problem sets with fully-worked solutions, other more substantial AP preparation texts, such as "Cracking the AP Calculus..." mentioned above, will likely prove a better value.

The Best AP Calculus Review Book
This review book goes over everything you need to know for the AP Exam. It is easy to read and describes everything you need to know, step by step. It provides questions after every chapter with full answers that detail how to arrive at the correct answer. The practice exams are also extrmely accurate and helpful to get a 5 on the exam.

One of the best study guides for AP Calculus
Let me preface this by saying that I took the AP calculus test in the mid 1980's and now have helped my daughter with a self-study course on calculus in preparation for the 2007 test. After going through a total of 4 study guides, 2 textbooks, and the last 7 years of available free response questions from the actual AP test, I found this guide to be one of the best AP calculus preparation books.

The AP calculus (AB or BC) has become considerably harder in the last 4 years. Most other books seem to have been developed for the test as administered in the 1990's.In order to pass, not only do you need to know your calculus - it is also mandatory that you know how to use your calculator in order to solve calculus problems.Most other books, completely ignore this point (see my other reviews).Rather than focusing on techniques of integration (which was a big deal for the earlier test in which calculators either weren't allowed or weren't capable), the emphasis has switched to integration via the calculator.
This book addresses the issue clearly.

One last point of advice is that this book does stress the concepts that are in turn stressed on the current tests - fundamental theorem of calculus, average value of a function by integration, and problems thatdepend on interpreting graphs and data points.

When chosing a book, keep in mind that the test is no longer a simple can you integrate and take a derivative by hand type of exam.If you can solve the problems in this book, you indeed will be prepared for the AP test. ... Read more

Excellent Book, Perfect for Self-Study
This was my Calculus textbook in high school. Hands down, one of the best math textbooks ever. Chapters begin with brief introductions to theory and history (i.e. An anecdotal description of Galileo's experiments rolling balls down ramps in an effort to determine the effect of gravity on different-sized objects is the introduction to the chapter about derivatives.) to pique interest, and there are lots of step-by-step examples and problemsets of varying difficulty. I found my college textbooks (and professors) entirely useless and often referred back to this one for clarification and more practice. Exam problems were a breeze compared to the bolded challenge exercises in this textbook. In my experience, only Statistics by David Freedman is more well-written. Definitely worth buying.

We bought this text book so my daughter would have a copy of her text at school and at home.The book was listed in "good" condition and it is in so much better condition than the one she received from her high school. What a great deal. Also, fast and fair priced shipping.

Best Calculus Book Ever
Some say this book makes calculus too simple. Good I say. If you are struggling and you can't do easy stuff then how on earth are you going to start doing hard stuff. Calculus is hard to learn so you need the clearest introductory text you can get your hands on. This is it. I learnt calculus from this book when I threw other books out the window. Beautiful illustrations and graphics make this a wonderful book and a pleasure to learn from.

Great book especially if you have a good teacher.
I've used this book for AP Calculus BC in High School and had a blast with it.

Pro's:
-Great sample problems that really hit the spot as far as techniques and methods go.They get progressively harder, starting off with simply plugging stuff into formulas and ending with problems that require the use of several techniques learned in the current as well as past chapters.
-Awesome graphics.There are lots of visual aids for each topic, especially when you get to multivariable calc and 3D graphing.(though AP does not cover that so I honestly don't know how the graphs hold up when you actually do the work...but they look awesome =) )
-Many formula sheets for easy referencing.
-Lots of cool facts about math.

Cons:
-Ok this is a bit tricky.I had an amazing calc teacher who basically taught us all the topics himself.Only reason we used the book was for sample problems.Now, when it came time to review for the AP test, I tried reading the book for some stuff that I forgot.Did not really find the explanations to be that good.My class notes (from teacher) explained things much more clearly and in a simple manner.I understood what the book was trying to get across, but it took some thinking.Teacher notes were way better.
-It's huuuuge!

Conclusion:Great book that has tons of sample problems, formulas/derivations, interesting facts, and visual aids.As far as understanding the actual material goes, like I said earlier I had a very good teacher so don't trust my limited experience with actually trying to learn from the book myself.

But, highly recommended because it was a fun book to study with.Some good problems covering many sides of a topic, good graphs to go along with the material, and lots of references (integration tables, stuff like that).There is also a basic PreCalc review in the back which might help some.

**As a side note, I believe there are answers to all the odd problems in the text.Which kind of reminds me of another con.The problems that are fully worked out with steps and solutions are few and are not that complicated when compared to the hard sample problems that only have the answer but no worked out solution**

Your Average Calculus Text, but not the best by far
This year my school switched Calculus textbooks and used my class as the guinea pigs to test out this book. I did not care for it as much as the brand we had used in the past. My main complaint is about the explanations and example problems. I felt the explanations were frequently incomplete and after reading them over many times, it was still confusing as to how they got from point A to point B. I did not feel the sample problems were representative of the type of problems asked in the exercises for each section. On the otherhand, the problems were very wide-ranging which is nice considering many math textbooks just have the same problem over and over again but with different numbers. If you don't depend on the explanations too much and just need the book for the homework problems, this shouldn't be bad. And even if you do need the explanations and sample problems to help you, I did and I still maintained an A average in the course. ... Read more

Fails epically at its fundamental responsibility: teaching
Of the 18 math textbooks I've used in my academic lifetime, this is the worst by a mile.Let's start with the unforgivable, dealbreaking flaws: it does a terrible job explaining mathematical concepts.Mr. Stewart seems to assume absolute mastery of all material involved (often high-level algebra and trigonometry) -- an assumption that causes him to frequently skip or combine steps in explanations, which can leave you scratching your head at how the hell he arrived at the conclusion (sometimes it even seems to assume you know the very things it's supposed to be teaching you).Worse, the intro & examples for any given section almost never give adequate training to solve all of the corresponding exercises.I found that reading the intro (no matter how many times) preps you for the first 20 or so problems, but for the remaining 30 you're on your own, stuck there staring blankly at the page, frustrated at having no educational resource to turn to.

If you want to survive whatever class force-feeds this textbook down your throat, you'd better hope you end up with a professor who's clear and helpful enough to compensate (do prior research on ratemyprofessors.com), because you won't get far relying on this book alone.

For the record, I'm not a moron.I'm naturally comfortable with and skilled at math, scored 91%ile on the math SAT, and got an A in both Precalculus and Business Calculus in college.This book made me feel pretty dumb until I found all the Amazon reviews on Stewart's other calc books making the same complaints.Don't let it get you down.

We can dock further points for being 1,000+ pages thick, not very solidly constructed (the binding gets weak and wiggly pretty fast), and with a sticker closing in on $170, outrageously overpriced.

Yeap, it's helpful
As a previous reviewer stated, this is a really well written book. It actually did help me score higher on our first quiz. The author states in plain English what the textbook dances around. It doesn't replace a textbook, but it allows you to see the "big picture" of what you're dealing with. Also, the review sections on Algebra are really helpful since I've been out of school for a while and you've got to have Algebra down pat to perform the PreCalculus work.
I definitely recommend this book.

EASY TO FOLLOW: what I need
This book is excellent. I needed something to help me prepare for my college algebra and trig class and this was the perfect selection. The author is avoids using fancy math lingo and explains everything in an easy format. It really feels like I have personal tutor and honestly, this book is probably better than some professors who teach college math classes. I would recommend this book to ANYONE who struggled with college algebra and pre-cal or needs a refresher in this subject for any entrance exams (nursing, etc).
