Extractions: Director for Research and Advisory Services The investigation of living marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay and the Virginia Sea has been a dominating focus of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science / School of Marine Science for over sixty years. In no active subject area has a continuing commitment to research, education and advisory service been so consistent as in Fisheries Science. Today, the Department of Fisheries Science includes faculty with a broad variety of research interests including: finfish, mollusc, crustacean, shark, turtle and marine mammal biology, pathology, parasitology, genetics, and economics. Our overall objective is to improve the understanding and management of fish populations through research on marine and freshwater systems, including not only fishes, but also marine mammals, invertebrates, and their habitats. Our research focuses on challenging scientific topics that are directly applicable to fisheries management. Graduate students in REM can obtain Master's or Ph.D. degrees that focus on applied fisheries science and management. In the REM graduate program , a unique interdisciplinary structure enables students to develop additional expertise in related areas such as resource economics, simulation modelling and statistics, risk assessment and decision analysis, benefit-cost analysis, environmental contaminants, conflict resolution, and environmental law. An optional Cooperative Education program allows REM students to gain work experience in a management agency or private firm before they graduate.

Extractions: Important Notice 5/10/99 : The searchable index of MSDS sheets maintained at the University of Utah Department of Chemistry has been eliminated. In their words, the database was outdated and limited in scope. For several years, the NWFSC server only provided a simple search form for those MSDS sheets; we did not physically store the MSDS sheets on our server. As is the case for the University of Utah, we do not manufacture chemicals and so do not have the right or the responsibility to maintain a public database. Currently, most major chemical vendors have posted links to MSDS sheets, and it is suggested that individuals and companies seeking MSDS information visit those web sites . This region of nearly 3 million square miles includes the North Pacific Ocean and the eastern Bering Sea which support some of the most important commercial fisheries in the world. These waters are also home to the largest marine mammal populations in the Nation. The mission of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center is to plan, develop, and manage scientific research programs which generate the best scientific data available for understanding, managing, and conserving the region's living marine resources and the environmental quality essential for their existence. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center conducts field and laboratory research to help conserve and manage the region's living marine resources in compliance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1996, the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Center scientists compile and analyze broad databases on fishery, oceanography, marine mammal, and environmental research. These data are used to develop policies and strategies for fisheries management within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, monitor the health of the region's marine mammal populations, and assess the impacts of chemical contaminants and physical alterations on select organisms and marine habitats.
