World Congress Of Ethnic Religions: Lithuania Followers of Lithuanian Religion chose the name romuva in 1920's. The name honors the Prussian Baltic sanctuary romuva, which stood in the Prussian land of Nadruva (near Chernahovsk in the Kaliningrad region). http://www.wcer.org/members/europe/Lithuania/
Extractions: Romuva celebrates the Ethnic or Old Religion of the Lithuanians. This religion has very ancient roots and many international links. It was the national and state religion of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania until 1387. It is very closely kindred to Latvian Ethnic Religion known as Dievturi (which means "Bearing God Dievas"). It is also similarly related to the religion of the Old Prussians, and other Baltic peoples. To read more, click on the links below:

Extractions: Romuva The Lithuanian Indigenous Religion formed from the Baltic convergence of the Old European chthonic and the Indo-European heavenly religions. This union occurred on the shores of the Baltic sea and is uniquely Baltic. The Baltic languages include Old Prussian, Lithuanian, Lettish (Latvian), Curonian, Semigallian and Selian. The Old Prussian language disappeared around 1700 due to German colonization and Curonian, Semigallian and Selian became assimilated into the Lithuanian and Latvian language groups between 1400 and 1600. Thus, Lithuanian and Latvian (and their respective dialects) remain as the last living languages of the Baltic family. This language family was also know as Aistian, since the Roman historian Tacitus described the peoples living on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea as the gentes Aestiorum or Aestii (people of the East) in 98 A.D. The Balts are exceptional among Indo-European groups in that they have maintained their language, folklore, pagan beliefs and customs in a remarkable pure state for so long. A deliberate effort to convert the native population to Christianity was begun only after Grand Prince Jogaila accepted baptism in 1396, together with the royal crown of Poland. But for a long time the new religions retained only a superficial hold on the population, which remained "stubbornly pagan" in some regions even to this century. Romuva is the name of the most important sanctuary of the Prussians, which was destroyed by crusaders in the XIII century. The symbol of Romuva is a stylized sacred oak tree with three pairs of branches, topped by a sacred flame. Underneath, the word

Extractions: Three formative periods developed the present-day religion. After the last Ice Age, the first nomads in the region of present-day Lithuania practiced a hunting-gathering oriented religion. Once the region became agrarian, the settlers practiced their version of Old European religion. After a wave of cultural changes spread across Europe, the inhabitants practiced their form of Indo-European religion. Each religious transformation incorporated elements from its predecessors. Baltic Religion evolved primarily from these three antecedents. Each Baltic nation developed its own ethnic variant of Baltic Religion.
Extractions: July 13 th Preamble: Who is a pagan? In his book 'Chronique des Derniers Paiens' written in French, author Pierre Chuvin asks himself about the identity of the pagans. The word essentially means, in Greek 'hellenic' and in Latin 'paganus', meaning 'those of the old religion'. The description suited both friends and foes of the pagans, at the time. There have been lively discussions in India on the subject, according to many, one of the principal homelands of the pagans. Did Christ spend any time of his life in Kashmir? There is a deeper question: if there lived any figure like Christ at all! He had left no historical evidence for his living and preaching on earth. The Dead Sea Scrolls written around the time of Christ's life, make no mention of him although they are said to refer to John the Baptist. The doubt arises because the basic tenets of Christianity can be traced to the practices of the so called paganism and other ethnic religions of the day. To understand the contribution of the pagans we have to go over Roman history of the time. It may not be out of place here to refer to the gradual change in the meaning of the word 'paganus' in Latin, which literally meant 'countryman' or 'peasant'. It was not a pejorative term. The word also meant 'civilian'. The change in the meaning of the word started with the rise of early Christianity when the term took on a new meaning. The new meaning was essentially 'non-believer' and thus 'an enemy of the Christians'. One has only to look into the pages of history to discover the widespread slaughter and elimination of the pagans from the face of Europe and also of the Middle East, during the rise of Islam. Islam's Kaaba was essentially a pagan site where there were a great number of pagan deities.
