Extractions: 49-State Car- See CA AIS- Air Injection System- Air Injection defines a system that introduces fresh air to the exhaust stream. This has been used in many ways, but the primary reason is to help raise the exhaust temperatures, promoting continued combustion of the exhaust gases as they leave the system. Air can be introduced either by way of a belt-driven air pump, or by the natural vacuum that occurs when hot, moving exhaust gases pass an open port. The latter style is usually called reed valve or Pulse Air Injection . In early cars, a thermactor system was used- This basically allowed the hot (partially unburned) gases leaving the exhaust valves a fresh shot of air, causing them to 're- burn' as they left the manifold. Heat was again a primary function in later cars using catalysts, as the catalyst needs to reach operating temperature before it an do its job (see Catalyst ), and the fresh shot of oxygen also helps the chemical reaction inside the catalyst. An important note: Most air pumps use less than .5HP at peak load- the plumbing associated with these systems can be a headache, but the actual performance losses are minimal. Indeed, some long-term Fiat mechanics tout the air injection, saying it keeps the exhaust valves cooler, prolonging the life of the engine. Make your own judgment. Breather- The breather system seals crankcase blow-by gases and routes them to the intake for combustion. Most cars use a vacuum operated PCV system to accomplish this- Fiat, and some other European cars were the last to use a passive breather system in their US-bound cars.

In the third edition, the author is revising his formerly more theoretical approach to the topic of linear systems, choosing instead a more general approach that will appeal to a wider audience. A key feature of the revision is the incorporation of MATLAB throughout the text, with an emphasis on the ideas behind the computation and the interpretation of the results. All theorems or results are developed in a logical way so that the reader gains an intuitive understanding of the theorems, contrasting existing texts in which the theorems are simply listed without explanation. The revised text will also begin with the time-invariant case and extend through the subject of time-variant case, although this section may be omitted upon the instructor's discretion. The result is a user-friendly approach to linear systems, striking a balance between theory and applications. This new edition is geared for classroom use and engineering applications; therefore many topics in the original edition have been deleted, including strict system equivalence, deterministic identification, computational issues, some multivariable canonical forms, and decoupling by state feedback. It is intended for use in senior/first-year graduate courses on linear systems and multivariable system design in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aeronautical engineering departments. The mathematical background assumed is a working knowledge of linear algebra and the Laplace transform and an elementary knowledge of differential equations. Because linear system theory is such a vast field, in the text, discussion has been limited to the conventional approaches of state space equations and the polynomial fractional method of transfer matrices. The text is appropriate for undergraduate students of linear systems and multivariable system design.

System theory has become the backbone of quite a few modern disciplines, namely control theory, signal processing and linear algebra. In this course you will develop the ability to analyze and synthesize systems using real, professional methods. We restrict ourselves to linear, discrete-time, dynamical systems, i.e. the kind of systems that you encounter when you do computations on signals, when you want to identify a (telecommunication) channel or when you design a controller for a plant. We treat this type of system in a very general way, namely as time-varying systems. This allows us to achieve at the same time depth and relevance, without being burdened by the limitations of transform theory on the one hand, and the intractable problems of non-linear theory on the other. In addition, linear time-varying system theory forms the basis for the non-linear theory as well. We treat the subject in the modern way introduced by R. Kalman, i.e. by looking at a system as a physical medium in which dynamic state evolution takes place, and by developing an adequate algebraic formalism to describe that. Over the years, the insight has grown that an elementary algebraic approach quickly leads to all the important concepts and formalism needed such as reachability, controllability, observability, detectability, state structure and minimality. It allows to derive all the important properties needed for system identification, realization, approximation and inversion. At some point we do introduce some advanced mathematical concepts such as Hilbert spaces, but we do that in a well motivated and natural way. Since Hilbert spaces form the basis for much of modern physics and signal engineering, this is a good point to enter the field!
