Extractions: This programme focusses on operator theoretical methods to analyze problems arising from concrete classes of integral, differential and difference equations. Both linear and non-linear equations are studied, and the problems may have a finite dimensional or infinite dimensional character. Typical for this programme is a strong interaction with dynamical systems, partial differential equations, probability theory and complex function theory. Important themes are the asymptotic behaviour of deterministic and of non-deterministic systems, applications and further development of the state space method, nonselfadjoint problems and completeness, the analysis of nonexpansive maps. Status of the programme. Many equations arising in physical and biological models can be written as initial-value problems for ordinary differential equations in infinite-dimensional spaces. In analyzing such equations it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the corresponding linear (or possibly linearized) equation. Methods from operator theory play an important role in the mathematical analysis of such problems. On the international level there is an increasing interest in infinite dimensional dynamical systems (compare the work of Foias, Hale and Temam) which also requires a stronger interaction with operator theory. The research of the second programme leader, S.M. Verduyn Lunel, is supported by a NWO PIONIER grant for his project ``Analysis, dynamical systems and applications''.

Centre for Mathematics and Its Applications Surveys in Analysis and Operator Theory Volume 40 in the Proceedings of the Centre for Mathematics and Its Applications Preface This volume contains survey articles based on lecture series given by the authors at the Australian National University between July 2001 and June 2002. All but one were given in the seminar series of the Special Program on Spectral and Scattering Theory which was held at ANU from July to December, 2001. The exception is the article by Ben Andrews, which is based on lectures given in the regular geometry/analysis seminar at ANU during the first half of 2002. All the articles have an expository character, generally including either new results or very recently published material. The Special Program on Spectral and Scattering Theory was an activity of the CMA, organised by Alan McIntosh and myself. The main activities of the Special Program were two National Research Symposia held during August and September, and a seminar series held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the duration of the Program. A number of distinguished visitors in this field (about 16 in all) were invited to ANU for up to six weeks, to give either a series of lectures or symposium talks. The scope of the Program was interpreted broadly to include harmonic analysis, partial differential equations and operator theory as well as spectral and scattering theory. On behalf of the CMA, I wish to thank the authors of these surveys for their contribution to the Special Program and to this volume of the Proceedings of the CMA. I also thank the CMA's administrative staff, Annette Hughes and Kate McKay, for their help in the smooth running of the Special Program, and Terry Tao for co-organising the National Research Symposia.

Extractions: Mathematics of Information Technoloy and Complex Systems Keywords: Seismic imaging, linear operator theory, partial- and pseudo- differential equations, oscillatory integrals. Current seismic imaging techniques are highly mathematical, using methods based on mathematical theories developed in the first half of the twentieth century. This project proposes developing new imaging techniques based on recent advances in the mathematical theory of pseudo-differential operators and related areas. These new ideas are very applicable to understanding the complex structure of subsurface geological features, including variable velocities of propagation for seismic waves, directional dependencies of velocity, and so on. However, there is much work to be done in transferring and developing the mathematics into suitable form for use in the petroleum industry. We have assembled a team of researchers that includes both geophysicists and mathematicians, with the relevant expertise necessary to marry the mathematical theory with the geophysical application. With this combination, we intend to expeditiously translate the rich, yet highly technical mathematical theory into useful industrial tools for seismic imaging.

Extractions: The Canadian Operator Theory and Operator Algebras Symposium attracts between 70 and 100 mathematicians from Canada, the United States, and overseas. Canada's strength in these areas has enabled us to host one of the two most important conferences in this area in North America (the other being the American counterpart - the Great Plains Operator Theory Symposium), and arguably one of the top three annual conferences in Operator Theory/Algebras in the world. The conference takes place over a period of five days, and traditionally has had a principal speaker who delivers three one-hour lectures on a given subject, as well as ten to twelve invited speakers of international calibre who each deliver one-hour lectures. The remaining lectures, which range in number from 25 to 40, consist of contributed talks. In previous years, principal speakers have included some of the top people in the field, including W. Arveson, M.D. Choi, R. Douglas, P. Fillmore, N. Nikolskii, V. Paulsen, and D. Voiculescu, to name but a few, as well as Fields medal winner Alain Connes. It is one of the aims of the Canadian Operator Theory and Operator Algebras Symposium to introduce graduate students and recent graduates in Operator Theory into this active mathematical community, helping to maintain Canada's position as one of the leaders in this field.
