Design: Qualitative study using in-depth interviews Patients: 30 stroke survivors, six months after discharge from Lime Tree Rehabilitation Unit, Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. Setting: Community setting Main results: Two themes were identified: everyday activities and leisure activities. Everyday activities occurred within the home or local community setting and included activities that demonstrated respondent’s ability to look after themselves on regular basis. This included problem solving, basic activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Respondent’s reported that their ability to perform everyday activities was affected by the type, level of difficulty, frequency, location of the activity and level of satisfaction with the end result. Physical limitations such as difficulty walking and poor standing tolerance were found to affect all areas of everyday activities. The ability to look after oneself was described as important. The paper also displays how information generated from the qualitative interviews has been used in the initial stages in the development of the (SIPSO) test.
