Extractions: Durham Symposium K-theory and analysis 6 - 13 July 2000 The Durham Symposium on K-theory and analysis took place from 6 to 13 July 2000, with lectures running 7 - 12 July. The symposium was centred around the theme of K-theory for group C*-algebras and involved the interaction of K-theory with geometry. The overarching idea was that K-theory groups should be seen as a way of organizing certain kinds of geometric structures 'up to deformation'. The symposium represented applications of K-theory that touch upon many different areas of mathematics and drew together a wealth of mathematical ideas. The programme included K-theory for group algebras, the Novikov conjecture, cyclic homology, and dynamical systems all of which have a link to the Baum-Connes conjecture; the K-theory involved ran all the way through its topological, analytic and algebraic versions. The theme, which is developing extremely rapidly at the present time, brought together experts representing mathematical disciplines that are unified in unexpected ways by a few deep and difficult problems. A number of important and new results were announced at the conference, e.g. a proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture for adelic groups. There was also a number of expository talks aimed at postgraduate students. The small size of the Symposium allowed for a lot of informal discussion and interaction between the areas represented.

Our eventual goal is to obtain a description of the algebraic K-theory of the ``large'' algebra in a generalized free product diagram in terms of the K-theories of the three smaller algebras. We first provide foundational material on generalized free product diagrams of S-algebras and associated categories of Mayer-Vietoris presentations. We show that the categories of Mayer-Vietoris presentations are categories with cofibrations, weak equivalences, and mapping cylinders. The topological cyclic homology of the interpolating S-algebras can often be computationally explored by classical methods of algebraic topology, and the lectures will exhibit some of these methods. The construction of topological cyclic homology as a homotopy limit of fixed points for finite cyclic groups acting on a topological Hochschild homology spectrum is followed in steps at the level of homology- or homotopy groups. K-theory is a part of ring theory that assigns to every ring certain abelian groups, the so-called K-groups, that describe certain properties of the ring. The origin of this theory lies in topology, where the base ring is the ring of continuous functions on a topological space. The K-groups then become invariants of the topological space. The focus of the seminar will be on algebraic K-theory, which, however, will be compared with topological K-theory and the K-theory of operator algebras. A central topic of the seminar is the connection between the second K-group and the Brauer group, which is given by the Merkuriev-Suslin theorem. From this theorem, we will proceed on the one hand to the discussion of the new progress in motivic cohomology that has recently attracted attention, on the other hand to the consideration of the role that K-theory plays in string theory. The seminar is addressed at graduate students who want to learn about a subject that is relevant for algebra, topology, and differential geometry. Besides a certain mathematical maturity, there are no special prerequisites necessary.

Extractions: The set of lattice points of an integral polytope P defines a semigroup in a natural way. The corresponding semigroup algebra F[P] over a field F is called a polytopal algebra. It has a natural grading. The structure of the group of graded automorphisms of F[P] is surprisingly similar to that of the general linear groups over F: each graded automorphism is the composition of a toric automorphism, an automorphism induced by a symmetry of P, and an elementary automorphism. The latter can be described by combinatorial data, called column structures. The elementary automorphisms can be defined over any commutative ring R of coefficients. The construction of Milnor's K_2 via elementary subgroups of GL, Steinberg relations and Steinberg groups can be mimicked in the polytopal setting, at least for so-called balanced polytopes with ?simple? Steinberg relations. The limiting process is replaced by a construction called doubling of polytopes. Therefore one is justified to denote the center of the stable Steinberg by K_2(R,P). Applying Quillen's +construction we define the higher polyhedral K-groups K_i^Q(R,P). Another construction of higher K-theory applicable is Volodin's. In the classical case it relies on triangular subgroups of the general linear group, and analogues of these, called rigid systems, can also be defined for polyhedral K-theory. Suslin's proof of the equivalence of the Quillen and Volodin construction can be transferred to a certain class of polytopes, but it is unclear whether these theories coincide for arbitrary balanced polytopes.

Very recent work of Vladimir Voevodsky and his collaborators has much advanced our knowledge of Galois cohomology and algebraic K-theory. This work involves a global approach to the algebraic geometry of algebraic varieties which entails the development of a suitable homotopy theory. This meeting will offer an exposition of these new techniques and discuss some of the applications to algebraic K-theory and the theory of quadratic forms. The conference will be organized by Spencer Bloch and Eric M. Friedlander. Primary speaker: Vladimir Voevodsky, Northwestern A program schedule is now available. MSRI's regular Hill Shuttle Service will be operating Monday through Friday, May 11 - 15. Special bus service has been arranged for the Saturday, May 16 lectures.
