Extractions: at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, California Organized by: Robert Bryant (co-chair), Frances Kirwan, Peter Petersen, Richard Schoen, Isadore Singer, and Gang Tian (co-chair) Differential geometry is a vast subject that has its roots in both the classical theory of curves and surfaces, i.e., the study of properties of objects in physical space that are unchanged by rotation and translation, and in the early attempts by Gauss and Riemann, among others, to understand the features of problems from the calculus of variations that are independent of the coordinates in which they might happen to be described. As classical as the subject is, it is currently undergoing a very vigorous development, interacting strongly with theoretical physics, mechanics, topology, algebraic geometry, symplectic topology, partial differential equations, the calculus of variations, integrable systems, and many other subjects. The five main topics on which we propose to concentrate the program are areas that have shown considerable growth in the last ten years:

Extractions: This is the homepage of the group of people in the Mathematics Institute of the University of Vienna working in or interested in Differential Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, or Algebraic Topology. One of the main topics of the research in the area of Differential Geometry is Infinite Dimensional Differential Geometry. Here, the geometry of manifolds is under investigation that is modelled on general locally convex vector spaces. In particular, the theory of infinite dimensional Lie groups (for example, groups of diffeomorphisms on finite dimensional manifolds) is studied. In the area of Finite Dimensional Differential Geometry the main research directions are, among others, the study of actions of Lie groups, as well as geometric structures of finite order and Cartan connexions. This work has strong algebraic connections, for example to the theory of algebraic groups and to the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups. In particular, the proof of the higher Bianchi identity has been clarified and the coboundary relations have been worked out when the gerbe is trivial. The cocycle equations for a gerbe with connection are described in a very explicit manner We define in a global manner the notion of a connective structure for a gerbe on a space X. When the gerbe is endowed with trivializing data with respect to an open cover of X, we describe this connective structure in two separate ways, which extend from abelian to general gerbes the corresponding descriptions due to J.- L. Brylinski and N. Hitchin. We give a global definition of the 3-curvature of this connective structure as a 3-form on X with values in the Lie stack of the gauge stack of the gerbe. We also study this notion locally in terms of more traditional Lie algebra-valued 3-forms. The Bianchi identity, which the curvature of a connection on a principal bundle satisfies, is replaced here by a more elaborate equation. References and citations for this submission:
