Product Description
Clinicians, social and developmental psychologists and behavioral geneticists have all conducted research over the past ten years which is essential to furthering our understanding of and treatment of social anxiety disorders. If researchers and clinicians are to successfully combat this disorder, the literature must fully integrate studies on social anxiety, shyness, and embarrassment with the research on social anxiety disorder subtypes, biological theories and cognitive-behavioral or pharmacological treatment outcome studies. This book weaves together research findings gathered by renowned minds across these various disciplines, and chapters deal with both theory and research. Thorough exploration is given as to how to define what constitutes social anxiety, and assessment of the condition and its relationship to other psychological disorders. The biological basis and treatment approaches are also all explored in full. Coverage includes key issues not disucssed fully by other existing books, including related disorders of adult and childhood, relationship to social competence and assertiveness, relationship to perfectionism, social skills deficit hypothesis, comparison between pharmacological and psychosocial treatments, and potential mediators of change in the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

* The most comprehensive source of up-to-date data, with review articles covering a thorough deliniation of social anxiety, theoretical perspectives, and treatment approaches
* Consolidates broadly distributed literature into single source, saving researchers and clinicians time in obtaining and translating information and improving the level of further research and care they can provide
* Each chapter is written by an expert in the topic area
* Provides more fully vetted expert knowledge than any existing work
* Integrates findings from various disciplines - clinical, social and developmental psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, - rather than focusing on only one conceptual perspective
* Provides the reader with more complete understanding of a complex phenomena, giving researchers and clinicians alike a better set of tool for furthering what we know
* Offers coverage of essential topics on which competing books fail to focus, such as: related disorders of adult and childhood; the relationship to social competence, assertiveness and perfectionism; social skills deficit hypothesis; comparison between pharmacological and psychosocial treatments; and potential mediators of change in the treatment of social anxiety disorder population ... 2-0 out of 5 stars only for researchers
I don't think this is such a good book. This book is only for people who are very familiar with psychology and its related branches/ associated social sciences. He references theories of psychology, research etc-- that he explains but I could tell that if I knew more it would have made more sense to me or been more rewarding to put together in this vista-of-psychology way. My background is a few college level courses plus a lot of my own reading over the last several years in cultural psychology. The book just wasn't useful to me as someone who is interested in cultural psychology. It basically tries to trace the evolution of cultural psychology, where it showed up in psychology theory and how psychologists have tried to address it... except that it doesn't show up very much at all. Most psychology is the "first" psychology which focuses more on perception and the individual rather than emergent properties that arise out of cultures. This is a reference to someone named Wundt and his Volkerpsychologie, a second psychology. I made it about halfway through the book, realized that I had stopped connecting to it fifty pages ago, and stopped. Also this author is a developmental psychologist so it has a little bit more of that, and very little about cultural psychology as I understand it or am interested in it. I was disappointed in this book. Maybe I'll pick it up again and read the second half or get something out of it, but I got it based on just the reviews here and the title, and was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Psychology
Cultural Psychology is a book that doesn't discriminate among its readers; it makes no assumptions that the reader comes from a psychology background. Michael Cole, the author, after laying down the history, takes the reader through the development of cultural psychology supplementing this journey with relevant examples and appropriate metaphors. The focus being on "putting culture in the middle" the book provides an insight into the process of bridging the gap between culture and mind, which have been, categorized under two separate disciplines. And it is interesting to note that both these disciplines are struggling with similar problems to be able to articulate this fluidity.

The discussion around methodology as an underlying motif is most fascinating and how the field is a site of constant negotiation, of alterations in meanings and juxtapositions especially in the context of two terms "culture" and "context". One finds a similar trend of adjustments and readjustments in the field of anthropology, a field Cole continually refers to in the book. In spite of the difference in the content of what each discipline focuses on one finds similarities in what these two disciplines are trying to achieve; to strike a perfect balance between the individual and culture, to find the right spots to place the individual and culture in their respective methodologies.

Cole describes context to mean "to weave together" saying, "An "act in context" understood in terms of the weaving metaphor requires a relational interpretation of mind; objects and contexts arise together as part of a single bio-social cultural process of development."(136). So understanding the individual mind in context of culture where mediation is carried out through cultural artifacts. And where this interaction takes place differently for different individuals with varied experiences, memories and responses to these cultural artifacts. He focuses on the mediating role artifacts play in activities and how the mind develops through the processes of interactions mediated through these artifacts. Therefore arguing that the individual mind cannot be studied in isolation but in context.

In his concluding paragraph Cole writes, "Create a methodology, a systematic way of relating theory to data that draws upon both the natural sciences, as befits its hybrid object, human beings. Find an activity setting where you can be both participant and analyst. Enter into the process of helping things grow in the activity system you have entered by bringing to bear all the knowledge gained from the both the cultural and natural sciences sides of psychology and allied disciplines"(349-350) stressing the importance of borrowing and lending transactions between disciplines. Another aspect of methodology suggested here is the shift from a one-dimensional role of observation to the dual role of both participation and analysis characterized by dialogue and communication, a similar concern in the allied discipline of anthropology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Minds are not computers
The first part of this book presents a thorough history of early psychology, and the unfortunate schism that was created between what Cole refers to as first and second psychologies. At bottom, first psychology --which is today the far more prevalent mode of academic inquiry into the human mind-- assumes that the human mind and the environment that surrounds it are two easily distinguishable things. From this assumption follow various stimulus --> response approaches to studying human behavior, where it is assumed that the simple reactions that are elicited from subjects to simple stimuli is an adequate way of probing consciousness and thought. This reductive strategy is in line with the "scientific" aspirations that gripped the human sciences in the early part of the twentieth century. In this paradigm, the social and cultural context that surrounds and gives structure to human life is either thought to be too complex to incorporate into "real" studies, or is noise that a clean, quiet lab can remedy.Second psychology, covered in the second part of the book, starts from the assumption that meaning is inseparable from the goals and intentions that only culture/society make intelligible.Instead of assuming that there are a priori essential psychological structures that determine human behavior, it starts by questioning how human action makes-sense, that is, puts cultural resources to use in the service of fulfilling/attaining a certain goal. These cultural resources --be they language, tools, other people-- are intricately involved in the very conceptualization of what counts as a goal and what counts as legitimate ways of attaining it.It is taken for granted that this goal oriented action will take different shapes in different cultural and historical settings, as the cultural resources available in different times and places will enable and limit, that is mediate, what is possible in different ways. This ecological imperative in second psychology helps to guide real world applications that are sensitive to the historical/anthropological contexts of the subjects being studied, and not simply abstracted out of these contexts and asked to perform certain measurable "standard" tasks. This book shows how it is possible to design such studies, constructively incorporating culture and society into questions of human action, thought, and consciousness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Because the wizard said so...
Cultural Psychology outlines a theoretical framework for cultural-historical investigation into human cognitive development predicated on analysis of everyday human activities. The author traces the role of culture in the history of psychological research, discusses lessons from cross-cultural research in Liberia, builds upon the Russian cultural-historical school (Vygotsky et al) and discusses the practical application of recent research into social activity and learning (5th Dimension, Field College).Throughout, Michael Cole persuasively argues that human cognition is culturally and socially constituted and articulates methodologies for studying cognitive development through joint activity.

I am interested in the implications of this work for educational strategies and on academic disciplinary boundaries. If cognitive development is constituted by specific social and cultural activities how do we rethink pedagogical practices? What helpful role can standardized tests really play in education? How do we rethink academic boundaries that separate studies of human sciences from culture? Can assessment tools useful for members of one cultural group be applied to members of other groups? Many of these issues are taken up in the engaging latter chapters of Cultural Psychology where Cole describes his work with different innovative educational programs incuding the 5th Dimension.Good stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars M. Hoffman's Review of Cultural Psychology
Mike Cole's influential and important book examines the role of culture in the history of psychology. His main points of inquiry are "Why do psychologists find it so difficult to keep culture in mind?" and"If you are a psychologist who believes that culture is a fundamental constituent of human thought and action, what can you do that it scientifically acceptable?" Answering these questions takes us through many disciplines and countries. Cole draws on Russian cultural-historical theories of activity and mediation first put forth by Vygotsky, Luria, Leontiev and others as well as his own research among the Vai of Liberia and children through the Fifth Dimension program. The books stresses that the crossing ofdisciplinary boundaries is of central importance to expanding our understandings of processes human thought and learning.
In interrogating how to be scientifically rigorous, credible and accepted while keeping culture as a central tenet of human thought and action, Cole is concerned with "ecological validity" and "behavior-in-context," which question whether it is possible to take behavior or activity in one context and then make expansive generalizations to many contexts (i.e. does the ability or inability to correctly answer multiple choice questionson a timed SAT exam really measure how well one will do in a college setting or how well do tests conducted in a laboratory really allow for understandings of behaviors outside the lab?).
Extending questions of ecological validity and behavior-in-context, Cole is extremely interested in sustainability. It is not enough to make broad generalizations from an isolated lab or classroom, rather the goal is to understand behavior in real life situations that effect life as it is lived. This means trying to find better ways to understand and treat learning disabilities, to improve literacy and academic performance in children as well as making tenable connections between disciplines that brings in new ideas and methods to affect positive change and keep it implemented and going.
This book is excellent for those interested in culture, interdisciplinary studies, psychology (and its history), and education. ... Read more

Product Description
The volume begins with an overview by Herbert Kelman discussing reconciliation as distinct from related processes of conflict settlement and conflict resolution. Following that, the first section of the volume focuses on intergroup reconciliation as consisting of moving beyond feelings of guilt and victimization (i.e., socio-emotional reconciliation). These processes include acceptance of responsibility for past wrongdoings and being forgiven in return. Such processes must occur on the background of restoring and maintaining feelings of esteem and respect for each of the parties. The chapters in the second section focus on processes through which parties learn to co-exist in a conflict free environment and trust each other (i.e., instrumental reconciliation). Such learning results from prolonged contact between adversarial groups under optimal conditions. Chapters in this section highlight the critical role of identity related processes (e.g., common identity) and power equality in this context. The contributions in the third part apply the social-psychological insights discussed previously to an analysis of real world programs to bring reconciliation (e.g., Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda, Israelis and Palestinians, and African societies plagued by the HIV epidemic and the Western aid donors). In a concluding chapter Morton Deutsch shares his insights on intergroup reconciliation that have accumulated in close to six decades of work on conflict and its resolution. ... Read more

Product Description

This compelling work brings together an array of distinguished scholars to explore key concepts, theories, and findings pertaining to some of the most fundamental issues in social life: the conditions under which people are kind and helpful to others or, conversely, under which they commit harmful, even murderous, acts. Covered are such topics as the complex interaction of individual, societal, and situational factors underpinning good or evil behavior; the role of guilt and the self-concept; and issues of responsibility and motivation, including why good people do bad things. The volume also examines whether aggression and violence are inescapable aspects of human nature, and how cooperative interaction can break down stereotyping and discrimination.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book diminished by some political cant
I came to this book as a general reader with a few undergraduate courses in psychology and readings in psychodynamic theory and psychopathy/sociopathy under my belt. So arriving from an individual-centric perspective to this book which argues for dominant situational determinants of behavior, it is probably not surprising that I experience some "culture shock". I think it is also unsurprising to experience social psychology as generally and inherently political. Even so, I was unprepared for the tenor of some of the chapters. Indeed, Philip G. Zimbardo's chapter includes the following disclaimer: "The political views expressed in this chapter represent solely those of a private citizen/patriot, and in no way should be construed as being supported or endorsed by any of my professional or institutional affiliations." OK. Consider that fair warning, gentle readers: subtle and not-so-subtle promotion of a collectivist world view ahead. Still, the politics of this book should not discourage anyone from reading it. If you tend toward a conservative, individualistic political perspective as I do, you just need to be ready to grin and bear with the slogans and distortions that seem to be main stream these days. If, on the other hand, you are of the collectivist-progressive persuasion, it will all seem like common sense and be soothingly reassuring.

Doob and Robinson (see below) observe, ". . . the 'truth' implied in education and 'falsity' usually ascribed to propaganda are really the narrow judgments of the earnest classifier. It is easy to notice the propaganda which is not in accord with one's own point of view, and to give a more respectable label to the efforts of those who represent what one thinks or believes one thinks."

Before you read "The Social Psychology of Good and Evil", I suggest that you read the short article "Psychology and Propaganda" by Leonard W. Doob and Edward S. Robinson, published in 1935 in The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science 1935;179;88 and online at [...]. It will make this book a far more enriching and satisfyingly ironic experience. Read them together. As Doob and Robinson observed, ". . . the value of any psychological influence is to be identified with the amount of reflective thought which it arouses." This is a good and useful book but one that should be read critically.

I find Miller guilty of the sin of Omission:There is no mention of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. There is no mention of the torture of prisoners. There is no mention of the Shah of Iran, or of his secret torture group. There is no mention of the Latin-American Death Squads who were trained at Ft Benning, Ga.In sum:There is no mention of any of the Evil that has been done, and is being done, by the USA.There is no mention of `Total Depravity', or of the complicity of the ordinary citizen in the Evil that the USA does.I recall when they were talking about closing Cannon Air Base in Clovis, there was such a hue and cry from the public, you would have thought that they were talking about executing a tenth of the citizens of Clovis.Of course, as a Liberal, I was in favor of closing all Military Bases.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books books on morality you'll ever read
I'll keep my comments brief because the editorial reviews on this book describe its basic essence. What I want to bring to the reader's attention is this: today there is much debate concerning the role that religion plays in developing moral behavior. This book shows how limited that role may actually be by demonstrating the biological and social forces that shape many of our ethical beliefs.

This book is so rich in information (many of the chapters can be easily read by the general public, but a few require some background in academic research)that I used it as the standard reference when writing a chapter on morality for the books Why We Believe What We Believe: Uncovering Our Biological Need for Meaning, Spirituality, and Truthand Born to Believe: God, Science, and the Origin of Ordinary and Extraordinary Beliefs, which I coauthored with Andrew Newberg.

This book demonstrates that human nature is equally driven to be both selfish and altruistic, hostile yet compassionate, and I came away from it with a very disturbing sense that we are far more amoral than we'd like to believe.

This book, however, is optimistic, and many chapters show how we can overcome personal and social biases and thus function more compassionately in the world. For example, several chapters refer to techniques that can be used in elementary school to teach children how to recognize and change discriminatory behavior.

Personally, the most disturbing chapter was written by Zimbardo, who conducted the Stanford "prison" experiment in the 1970s. In less than 24 hours, students automatically started to mistreat their student "inmates" in ways that hauntingly reflect the atrocities commited in Iraqi prisons by American soldiers. To some degree, we all little criminals, and once we acknowledge this unpleasant human trait, we can become better citizens, which is one of the goals that religious groups endeavor to achieve. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth about what is valid research and what is not
I read this book because I have spent many years of my life teaching the required "academic" research writing class that is required on most college campuses. Not surprisingly--since as Brannigan points out--social psychology is such a popular subject for college freshman, many of the research papers I had to grade often cited the famous "experiments" that are discussed in this book.

I always found the descriptions of these experiments troubling--especially those that impacted my field of education. They all seemed to be set up to come up with results that were decided a priori, a research "strategy" I was constantly trying to get my students to understand they should avoid if they really wanted to contribute to moving a field of study forward. And the fact that, according to Brannigan, social psychology seems to be a field of study that has stagnated proves that point.

I was very happy that Brannigan labeled them as "demonstrations" instead of valid research.I hope many in the field of sociology and psychology and education take this excellent book to heart and change their ways of doing research.

One last note--Brannigan mentions the use of these experiments as simply validating "common sense"; however, I would also like to point out that sometimes what we take as "common sense" turns out to be not true.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an extraordinary book!
This book caught my eye because I've frequently been asked whether Stanley Milgram's work was sound.Milgram's work has, after all, frequently been cited by those who emphasize the importance of environment instead of genetics on personality.I never had a good answer, because I'd never seen or even heard of criticism of Milgram's work.Wow--did this book ever open my eyes, not only to criticism of Milgram's work, but to methodological flaws in the entire field's approach to experimental work!

What I love about this book is just how skilled Dr. Brannigan is at finding and pointing out critical flaws in many of the classic studies of social psychology. He has done an unbelievably thorough review of the critical literature.(And it's not like that's easy, because most criticism of the classical studies somehow seems to never appear in the textbooks that have made those studies into "classics." Brannigan must have spent years sleuthing amongst the journals.)

I had never really thought about the fact that many, if not most, studies in social psychology really just don't apply at all to real life. For example, the subjects in Milgram's"shocking" studies often kept turning up the power on the (ostensive) electrical shocking equipment because they truly believed that it was a university setting and no one could really be being shocked.Well, they were right! And that's just one of many issues Brannigan points out with the studies.

The book culminates in a description of how social psychology can be put onto far more solid and useful a footing. This book should be essential reading for anyone with an interest in psychology or human nature--or wishing to learn how to *not* do experimental work in psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essemtial Reading for Psychologists and Sociologists
Social psychology has chosen the gold standard of scientific evidence - the experiment - in a scientific project to build knowledge about the nature of human behaviour in a group context. Those who have studied either Sociology or Psychology are readily familiar with the names of these experiments and their creators: the Hawthorne effect, Milgram, Pygmalion in the classroom, to name just a few. This remarkable book shows how much of the discipline is not based on rigorous scientific evidence, but rather a kind of wishful thinking that is more reminiscent of ethical drama than scientific fact.Readers will be astonished to find out, for example, that in pre-tests of Milgram's famous experiment on the effect of authority, the subjects administered lethal shocks to all of the supposed learners without any authority present at all!The experiment was later rejigged to obtain the results we all are familiar with.Brannigan shows how most of the well-known examples of Social Psychoogy experiments are not experiments in the classical sense of the word.Must reading for anyone interested in the discipline and a great text for methods classes.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Self psychology has a particular theoretical and clinical fit with social work practice, enhancing and deepening the treatment process with both children and adults and in individual and family therapy.

Here Miriam Elson elaborates upon this fit, largely through case studies which reflect her own empathy and respect for patients, her clear and sophisticated grasp of self psychology, and her clinical acumen.

The first section on theory discusses Heinz Kohut's ideas about human development, gender formation, and disorders of the self. In the second and third sections Elson presents a series of cases illustrating the treatment of self disorders in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. The patients are typical of the individuals who come to social agencies, out-patient clinics, and social workers in private practice. The final section includes a fascinating study of the James family and a discussion of applications in group and family therapy and to community services.

All clinical social workers and psychotherapists—whether just entering the profession, getting their first taste of Kohut's theory, or expanding a well-established base in self-psychology—will welcome this compassionate and clear exposition of the theory in practice.

Product Description

The Social Psychology of Consumer Behavior brings together the most promising and theoretically fruitful research developments by internationally renowned scholars, whose work is at the cutting edge of research. Experts from both fields – social psychology and consumer behavior – provide an informed, up-to-date overview, from an original integrative perspective.

The aim of this volume is two-fold. On the one hand, the application of social psychology to consumer behavior is meant to broaden the horizon of social psychologists. On the other hand, students and researchers of consumer behavior will be offered an advanced account of relevant theories tailored to their interests. While the range of topics is rather broad – including the construal of judgments and decisions, affective and cognitive feelings, social and media influences, and goals and self-regulation – each chapter is focused on one specific theoretical or methodological perspective and thereby gives a comprehensive and penetrative account of the relevant issues and the respective research.

The volume provides an invaluable resource to students, researchers, and instructors in social psychology, consumer psychology, consumer behavior, and marketing.

Editorial Review

Product Description

A revision of Winter's Ecological Psychology (1996), this book applies psychological theory and research to environmental problems.

After outlining current environmental difficulties, the authors demonstrate how 6 major approaches in psychology (social psychological, psychoanalytic, behavioral, physiological, cognitive, and holistic) can be applied to environmental problems.

The authors demonstrate why it is critical to address environmental threats now, and offer ideas on how psychological principles can contribute to building a sustainable culture. Personal examples engage the reader and provide suggestions for changing behavior and political structures.

Reorganized and updated throughout, the second edition features a new chapter on neuropsychological and health issues and a list of key concepts in each chapter. Cartoons and humorous analogies add a light touch to the book's serious message.

Written for psychology and environmental studies students, the book is an excellent teaching tool in courses on environmental, conservation, or ecological issues, found in departments of psychology, sociology, environmental science, and biology. It will also appeal to anyone interested in psychology's potential contributions to mounting ecological difficulties.

1-0 out of 5 stars elementary touchy feely treatment of a serious subject
the subject is an important one. when the authors - professors none the less - end the book by suggesting prayer as way to help the environment - and pepper the book with personal vignettes about communing with nature, meditation retreats and such you wonder what the point was.
i am a psychologist andspent good money because i wanted to learn something about the topic. i wish i could get my $refunded. a joke it is not. but a big let down: yes. do NOT bother do not buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars about time!
Psychologists have tended to stay in the lab or the consulting room and deal with trauma as though it all originated in people's heads or families (themselves rendered down into internalized "objects" or "systems"). In this book the authors make the move of applying insights from six psychology perspectives to our psychological relationship to various environmental crises. They also draw on personal examples to demonstrate this shift in psychological thinking from inside to inside-outside.

Most of the global warming information didn't receive public attention until Al Gore's film AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH even though scientists have known it's a problem since the 1980s. The mass extinctions now underway have received even less attention. It would be great to see an updated edition of this book dealing with how people feel about these catastrophes.

A new edition should also correct an inaccuracy on p. 199, where the authors write that ecopsychologists like Andy Fisher "...claimed that scientific data are irrelevant because the scientific method is a form of dualistic thinking that separates people from their environment." They cite some pages from Fisher's book RADICAL ECOPSYCHOLOGY (31-33). It's true that Fisher criticizes scientific dualism, but he does not claim that empirical research is irrelevant. I checked with him on this and with his permission will paste in part of his emailed reply:

"...You are correct to say that I do not dismiss all science. On p. 45 [of RADICAL ECOPSYCHOLOGY] I say that 'Of course, blank opposition to all scientific investigation is an untenable position, for there are certain kinds of regularity within the natural world that only the scientific mode can detect. Indeed we would be much the poorer without such undertakings as attachment theory and conservation biology.' My point on pages 31-33 was to highlight how restrictive conventional empiricism and rationalism is in psychology." Fisher wants to see research on psyche and environment employ a variety of methods, some qualitative, rather than limiting itself to methods developed to study objects only from the outside and only in abstract terms.

Nevertheless, the authors quite correctly point out that ecopsychologists have not embraced empirical/quantitative methods. I plan to correct this omission with a chapter on research to be published next year in the anthology ECOTHERAPY: PSYCHE AND NATURE IN A CIRCLE OF HEALING, the sequel to ECOPSYCHOLOGY: RESTORING THE EARTH, HEALING THE MIND, both published by Sierra Club Books.

If you are interested in seeing how psychology can be used to understand our troubled relations to the environment, THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS is an excellent place to start. I use it in my Planetary Psychology graduate course at JFK University.
