Product Description

Finally, a briefer version of one of the best-selling books in social psychology, for those who prefer less detail.  Baron and Byrne set the standard with their original book, and new co-author Nyla Branscombe has brought freshness and new insights with her expertise in topics such as prejudice, the self, gender and group processes. The briefer version retains all the hallmarks of the original: up-to-date coverage of the quickly evolving area of social psychology--balanced in its coverage of fundamentals with current research--and written in a lively, engaging style.

Needed this book for a psychology class. It is very straight to the point but sometimes the point is not too clear. I ended up looking most of the stuff up online because I needed a better understanding. It is a good textbook for an outline though.

Product Description
Although much has been written about discourse analysis in recent years, little of it has been intelligible to the average undergraduate or even post graduate student. It has become a field in which terminological confusions abound and a bewildering variety of theoretical perspectives compete.

This book, which is aimed at the advanced undergraduate student, is the first systematic and comprehensible introduction to the theory and application of discourse analysis within the field of social psychology and other related disciplines.

In the first chapter of the book, the theoretical roots of discourse analysis in linguistic philosophy, ethnomethodology and semiotics are described. Chapter Two overviews the perspective of discourse analysis and illustrates its utility in studying attitudes. The following five substantive chapters deal with concepts which are at the heart of the study of social psychology: rules, accounts, the self, categories and social representations. Chapter Eight then details the practical stages through which research on `social texts' progresses and discusses the issue of validity. The concluding chapter tackles some broader, controversial issues and identifies future research directions, and an exhaustive bibliography acquaints the student with all the relevant literature in the field.

The text is illustrated throughout with examples from written and spoken discourse: newspaper accounts of riots, scientists' conference presentations, murder confessions and people's everyday explanations of racial inequality as well as recordings of ubiquitous ordinary conversations. The authors avoid jargon at all times, even when introducing complex theoretical issues.

Discourse and Social Psychology will be indispensable reading for undergraduates and teachers in the fields of social psychology and communications studies, but will also be relevant to the discipline of sociology, linguistics, anthropology, semiotics, literary studies and history.

Product Description
Moral notions are foundational questions that have commanded deep reflection since antiquity, reflection that psychological science cannot evade, because the moral formation of children is a central concern of parents, schools, and communities charged with educating the next generation. In this respect there are few domains of study more crucial than moral psychology and few topics of greater importance than the development of moral self-identity, of moral character, and of the moral personality. This edited volume features the expertise of preeminent scholars in moral personality, self, and identity, such as moral philosophers, personality theorists, developmental psychologists, moral personality researchers, social psychologists, and neuroscientists. It brings together cutting-edge work in moral psychology that illustrates an impressive diversity of theoretical perspectives and methodologies and simultaneously points the way toward promising integrative possibilities. ... Product Description
Steven Breckler, James Olson, and Elizabeth Wiggins want to bring social psychology alive for students. They know that the only way to do this is for students to experience social psychology themselves. From the inception of the Social Psychology Alive project, the book, workbook, online labs, and video were developed in tandem, so each component would work seamlessly with the other components to help students recognize social psychological phenomena in the world around them. The book presents a mix of classic and contemporary research in an accessible writing style that emphasizes the relevance of the findings to students' own lives. In the workbook, students are given activities that apply the principles; in "Social Psychology Labs Online," students actually participate in social psychology experiments and thereby experience the research process of social psychologists; in the video, students see examples of social psychology in everyday life and listen to conversations with famous social psychologists. Each element of the package makes the course more active and the concepts more alive for students, so they come to appreciate how social psychology advances our understanding of social behavior. ... Product Description
A morality "based on the study of human nature instead of upon disregard for it" is the focus of this influential work by one of America's greatest educators and philosophers. Dewey maintains that the key to social psychology lies in an understanding of the many varieties of habit; individual mental activity, on the other hand, is guided by the subordinate factors of impulse and intelligence. His investigation therefore focuses on three main areas of conduct: habit, impulse, and intelligence. Each factor receives an incisive treatment, brimming with ideas, insights, and considered reflections sure to be appreciated by educators, psychologists, philosophers, and anyone interested in the role of the individual in society. Unabridged republication of the classic 1922 edition.

Product Description
Critical Readings in Social Psychology brings a fresh approach to the study of key topics in social psychology by contrasting classic and contemporary readings in core social psychological areas. Each chapter author presents contrasting approaches to a particular topic through the inclusion of two or three extracts from previously published texts that have been influential in shaping social psychological ideas. These extracts are supported by the author's commentary, which illuminates the part that debate and criticism play in the ways that social psychology continues to change and develop. The result is a clear and stimulating collection on seven key topics in social psychology:

  • Close relationships
  • Attitudes
  • Attribution
  • Intragroup processes
  • Intergroup processes
  • Conformity
  • Individual differences
A combination of textbook and reader, this book is designed specifically for social psychology students. Product Description
"An insightful and authoritative overview of a rapidly expanding field."-- Neal Roese, Department of Psychology, Northwestern University

How do we make sense of other people and of ourselves? What do we knowabout the people we encounter in our daily lives and about thesituations in which we encounter them, and how do we use this knowledgein our attempt to understand, predict, or recall their behavior? Are oursocial judgments fully determined by our social knowledge, or are theyalso influenced by our feelings and desires?

Social cognition researchers look at how we make sense of other peopleand of ourselves. In this book Ziva Kunda provides a comprehensive andaccessible survey of research and theory about social cognition at alevel appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students, as well asresearchers in the field.

The first part of the book reviews basic processes in social cognition,including the representation of social concepts, rules of inference,memory, "hot" cognition driven by motivation or affect, and automaticprocessing. The second part reviews three basic topics in socialcognition: group stereotypes, knowledge of other individuals, and theself. A final chapter revisits many of these issues from across-cultural perspective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, complete
This is an excellent book, very well-written and thorough. I borrowed it from a friend to use as a reference for a paper, and ended up enjoying myself thoroughly while reading it. I absolutely had to buy a copy for myself to add to my library. I'm thinking of developing a social cognition course, and if I do, I'm definitely using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone, including you, should read this book.
Ziva Kunda's Social Cognition is a readable, well-researched, and vital book on the psychology of (surprise) social cognition. It's a mind-bender - what you learn about the experimentally verified mechanics of such wide-ranging topics as racism, motivation, memory, self-knowledge and so on will literally change the way you look at the world.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in how the human mind works or wants a better understanding of their own mind and chances are, if you're reading this, you fall into one of these two categories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of cognitive science
The book--although poorly bound--is written very nicely.Kunda has a wonderful way of presenting the material objectively and respectfully while still engaging the reader.There are numerous, minor typos but this does not distract the reader terribly.A natural progression is found in Kunda's style, where she presents a topic, draws on some familiar day-to-day experiences, and presents the experiments and research that support it.She explains contradictions and allows the reader to make his/her own conclusions and inferences concerning topics like hot cognition, influences of mood on memory, subliminal processing, false-memories, and influences of culture on cognition.She, herself, did extensive work in the area of cognitive science and since her passing, will be missed by many as her work was incredibly innovative and interesting.

The book reads quickly and will be enjoyed by most.The only thing I wish was different about this book was its size (there is so much left over white space on each page--it's unnecessary).Most people with some experience or interest in cognitive science should find this book fascinating.Do not expect an in-depth or even moderate assessment of the biological or neurological underpinnings of cognition.This book explains cognition by reviewing social and cognitive experiments. ... Product Description
The first edition of "Developmental Social Psychology" was published in 1995. The text provides a comprehensive account of social development from infancy to old age, with more emphasis on infancy and childhood. It also looks at many aspects of cognitive development from a social perspective, which allows it to be used not only on social development courses, but also as a general developmental psychology text by those whose focus is on social development. It covers a very wide range of material with clarity, elegance and humour, and is widely reported by adopters to be extremely popular with students. It is currently one of the few non US focused social development texts, and is widely used in the UK, Australia and in northern Europe. We undertook market research amongst adopters and non-adopters, and whilst suggestions were made for minor changes, the overall feedback was to encourage Kevin to update the book throughout as soon as possible, keeping the structure as it is, and keeping the relative weighting of infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age.Since there was no consensus at all on either major omissions or on extraneous material, we decided that the best plan for an update was largely to keep to the original plan, so I didn't ask Kevin to submit a new proposal. What's more, we really can't let the book get any longer, and one of the main strengths of the book is it's breadth and depth of coverage, meaning nothing can be dropped, so a general update seems the best option. Instructors were asked if they would like more teaching features and more illustrations - the consensus was 'no', although we may well put together a website. There is, generally, a dearth of good social development texts which do not focus exclusively on US research and examples, and, with the increase in student numbers in psychology, we can look forward to building on the success of the original. ... Product Description

This book combines chapters written by leading social psychologists and economists, illuminating the developing trends in explaining and understanding economic behavior in a social world.

It provides insights from both fields, communicated by eloquent scholars, and demonstrates through recent research and theory how economic behaviors may be more effectively examined using a combination of both fields.

Social Psychology and Economics comes at a particularly fitting time, as a psychological approach to economics has begun to flourish in recent years, and papers exploring the intersection of these two disciplines have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, opening a dynamic dialogue between previously separated fields.

This volume, the first in the Society for Judgment and Decision Making Series since acquired by Psychology Press, includes chapters by economists and psychologists. It addresses a variety of economic phenomena within a social context, such as scarcity and materialism, emphasizing the importance of integrating social psychology and economics.

Social Psychology and Economics is arranged in seven parts that discuss:

  • an introduction to the topic;
  • preferences, utility, and choice;
  • emotions;
  • reciprocity, cooperation, and fairness;
  • social distance;
  • challenges to social psychology and economics; and
  • collaborative reflections and projections.

The market for this book is students, researchers, and professionals in the disciplines of economics, psychology, business, and behavioral decision making. Graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students will consider it a useful supplemental text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Experimentalists talking to each other
Northwestern University psychologist (and coeditor of this volume) J. Keith Murnighan and Harvard University economist Alvin E. Roth have worked together for some thirty years. Murnighan exclaims in their joint paper in this collection "It is completely clear that psychologists and economists take decidedly different approaches to understanding the same phenomena". (p. 330)

This should be a startling revelation, and a source of deep consternation toboth disciplines. Do not both psychology and economics consider themselves sciences? How can two scientific disciplines disagree in explaining the same phenomena and yet not attempt to resolve their differences? In fact, the two disciplines appear to share a public culture ofmutual respect and tolerance, despite the fact that such a culture has no place in the scientific enterprise.

There is no theory in this book. There is no social psychology theory because none exists (just lots of little nano-theories), and no economic theory because economic theory is of no value to social psychology,at least as far as I can ascertain from the editors' choices for inclusion in this collection. Rather, this book consists of social psychologists and experimental economists trading stories and bad-mouthing economic theory. While I take the experimental results discussed in this book as highly important, and they certainly imply that there is lots of work for theorists in coming to terms with actual human behavior, as a person interested in social theory, I am not thrilled with its complete absence in this book. In the rest of this review, I will discuss only how a theorist (in economics or psychology) might react to reading this book.

One theme that comes through several papers in this volume is that economists value a small number of highly general, parsimonious but somewhat inaccurate theories, while psychologists prefer a large number of highly specific theories, each of which is relatively accurate in its domain of application. Is accuracy vs. parsimony, then, an explanation of the differences between the fields? If so, the psychologists must be the winners, because there is little intrinsic value in parsimony, and great intrinsic value in accuracy. However, there is no ultimate value to the proliferation of models, each accurate over a short range of phenomena, unless they canbe generalized to a common model of human behavior. For in the absence of generalization, "accurate" simply reduces to "descriptive." The problem with descriptive models is that they reveal little about the underlying behavioral and physiological processes. Economists may have not achieved the goal of scientific explanation of human behavior, but at least their underlying theoretical method offers this as the goal of research. Proliferating descriptive nano-models, by contrast, is an inherently limited enterprise.

Of course, neoclassical economic theorists have their own weakness in their renown lack of interest in "the facts." This bizarre group promotes a culture that treats economic theory as a set of axiological truths that may or may not have real-world application. There is no justification for this position. Indeed, if natural scientists had this attitude over the past few centuries, we still be in the scientific Middle Ages. The Great Equations of Science are the product of painful, direct, extended empirical explorations, not the sort of sui-generis theorizing favored in economic theory.

Social psychologists have a contrasting temperament. Like nature-lovers admiring strange shells on the beach, social psychologists delight in happening upon interesting fragments of human behavior. Do humans distinguishbetween causing harm and not preventing harm? Wow, that's really interesting! Are many people implicit racists, even though they don't know it? Excellent discovery! A prize find for a social psychologist or behavioral economist is even more cherished if it violates some Grand Theory, such as the economist's rational actor model.Showing that some Grand Theory is wrong, preferably a theory full of sophisticated mathematics, is to the social psychologist and the experimental economist the prize above all prizes.

There are some fine essays in this book, including those of Kevin McCabe, Iris Bohnet, and Max H. Bazerman and Deepak Malhotra. But, experimentalists talking to each other is not the answer to the deeper questions in the two fields. Pretending that this is the answer, and in particular accepting the social psychologists self-satisfaction with a situation in which the field is a collection of experiments connected to "nano-theories" that apply to tiny areas of social existence, is unsatisfying.

Economic theory should expand its horizon by applying decision theory, game theory, and perhaps other analytical tools towards developing a more general framework that explains the phenomena treated in this book, as well as other aspects of human behavior that are absent from the standard model of the self-regarding actor. Social psychology should adopt the far superior experimental methodology of behavioral economics, and since this methodology is firmly based in Bayesian decision theory and game theory, social psychology should take decision theory and game theory as the basis for modeling human behavior. Going beyond game theory and decision theory to embrace neuroeconomics may also have great explanatory value.

Social psychology is like anthropology and political science in that all must borrow certain basic principles of human behavior and social organization from other behavioral disciplines (biology, economics, sociology, cognitive and developmental psychology). By so doing, social psychology could become a field based on substantive social theory rather than a plethora of fascinating but ultimately descriptive insights.
