4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for College Class
Great textbook, easy to understand with lots of photographs, which I enjoy as reading page after page of text gets boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Great illustrations, just what i was hoping for all material came new and with all registration cards. Very helpful and had links for website tutorials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never buy a used book!
I bought this book used and when I received it was a disaster... the pages was the only thing in good conditions, but everything else was unstuck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but long
Pros: Very comprehensive in subject matter, good grouping of information, gives definition of key words at side of each page, contains summaries at the end of each chapter

Cons: Not visually appealing (only black and blue ink used, even in pictures), The sections are long and drawn out, no chapter review questions are given to test proficiency.

Overall, I thought I must have recieved an old textbook due to the lack of visual stimulation which helps me absorb the information. But I do have the most recent copy. I wonder why they would cut corners in this regard even though the book sells for as much as other books that make reading easier by providing a more pleasant visual experience.

But it is a college level book, so I can't complain too much. The quality of information is good. ... Read more

Product Description
Considered the leading contemporary European social psychologist for his groundbreaking work on social influence and crowd psychology, Serge Moscovici has played a definitive role in shaping the trajectory of modern social inquiry. Bringing together the key texts in which he outlines and defines his benchmark theory of social representations-including several essays never previously published in English-his indispensable sourcebook illustrates the enormous range and scope of Moscovici's work.

Moscovici purports a theory of social representations remarkably distinct from the dominant themes in contemporary U.S. social psychology. In contrast to the traditionally individualistic emphasis, Moscovici's work is embedded in a broader social and cultural tradition and is passionately concerned with the social context in which meaning is constructed and lives are enacted. His radical and lucid approach offers fresh and multifarious ways of seeing the world while his clear and coherent perspective provides a rich contribution to a discipline which has been notoriously fragmented.

Addressing contemporary social phenomena rather than being trapped within the artificial limits of laboratory experimentation, Moscovici draws upon the diverse traditions of the wider social sciences, making him a primary voice within the community of social theorists.

Sure to fascinate any researcher, scholar, student, or practitioner of social psychology, Social Representations provides a representative and long overdue collection of Moscovici's unique and important work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The voice behind the theory: Moscovici and social psychology
A plethora of academic reserach has, since the 1960s, been directed towards deciphering, employing and critiquing Moscovici's theory of social representation. One major stumbling block in getting to the core of the theory has been language barriers: Moscovici writes predominantly in French and there has not been a great deal of translation of his work.Although not neceesarily developing the intracies of the theory much further in this book than has already been done elsewhere, it offers the chance to have the essence of Moscovici's work explained by the man himself. In a confidently written, accessible and broad-ranging book, Moscovici lays out his beliefs that the 'social' in 'social psychology' is not merely an add-on, a tipping of the academic hat to 'contexts' or a attempt to broaden the often narrow remit of experimental work.Instead,he convincingly draws the reader into a manifesto of psychology that is socially driven, iterative and historically situated.I challenge anyone who has doubts about the credence of social approaches in the discipline of psychology to read this book and not have at least an admiration for Moscovici's agenda and substantial understanding of the relationship between knowledge and society.A good read for those interested in the history of social thought and a chance to have those smug Anglo-Saxon grins wiped off our faces by an eloquent and informative French writer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars classic papers of psychology [including Milgram's]
Aronson gathers together a set of seminal papers on psychology; well worth reading by any student of this field. The classical discourse by Milgram on "Behavioral Study of Obedience" is included. From 1963, it relates experiments conducted by him where one student was told ["ordered"] to shock another. At least, so it appeared to the former. In simple form, and quite easy for the reader to follow, the paper has become famous even to laymen. Very unsettling. In the intervening years since the paper's first publication, there has been no refutation of its conclusions. It is probably the best known of the book's chapters.

Other chapters cover such diverse topics as persuading people to lose weight, water conservation and sexual aggression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific rundown on decision making in lay terms
Making the right decisions is seldom easy. Situations change and choices confound. Faulty perceptions and biases can block clear thinking and undermine the ability to weigh alternatives rationally. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo explained 90 years ago, "We may try to see things as objectively as we please. Nonetheless, we can never see them with any eyes except our own." This is the vexing paradox involved in making decisions: People who are in the process of deciding cannot always trust their own perceptions and thought processes. Psychologist Scott Plous, winner of numerous awards and honors, examines decision making in this rigorously scientific yet mostly accessible book, itself an award winner. getAbstract believes it will interest decision analysts, researchers, psychologists and strategists, as well as readers who want to know why they may make poor decisions and how to make better ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are we rational decision makers?
First we need to define what we understand under rational. Initially, researchers measured human rationality by analyzing the degree of "maximization" of utility (net wealth) of their decisions. Using this approach, we seemed not too "rational". Then they came up with a value function, defined in terms of gains and losses as deviations from a reference point and which incorporates decreasing returns. (For a deeper explanation read Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics). This curve makes the loss segment steeper than the profit segment ("S-shaped curve"). When measured against this function we seemed a bit more rational. For me, this should come as no surprise since decision making was probably a bit more oriented at preserving our lives and escaping dangers (loss part of the function) than at obtaining food. It would not be too useful to be the best food gatherer if you succumbed to your enemies at the first opportunity. (This is probably my first "hindsight bias", which means that after knowing the outcome of a study, we tend to say that we knew it from the beginning).

Apparently we tend to "satisfice" not "optimize", which for me is obvious (second hindsight bias) and I will try to explain why: In several of the examples, in order to "maximize" value, you need to multiply one probability with one or several others to obtain the "combined probability result" of two or more events happening one after the other. In other problems, you need to add up the individual probabilities in order to obtain the probability of one or the other event happening. Assuming that you knew how to state the problem in terms of probabilities and the rules to calculate them, you would still need to actually perform the calculations (consciously or unconsciously) in order to take a decision. Many decisions need to be taken quickly and even if there is enough time, I do not think people usually do these calculations, so they probably rely on some sort of intuition (what the author calls heuristics or rules of thumb). These rules of thumb will depend on past experiences specially on those that are easily accesible to memory because they were frequent or recent or because they had a great emotional impact on us (positive or negative). If to "maximize value" we need to perform complex calculations, then I am sure we do not "maximize", we rather settle with a fairly good decision. Further, if we need to "maximize value" in order to be considered rational, then we are probably not rational.

It would have been interesting to know how people decide when previously given the calculated expected values of each choice (considering the probabilities). I think that "rationality" would increase a bit, but not significantly, since some people believe they can "outperform" the odds (by special luck), while others try to avoid undesirable risks, even if the probabilities are very low (specially if the impact of the risk is big).

The book explains thoroughly how we deviate from what would be "rational" decision making. Each of the 20 chapters presents research that exemplifies one or more biases like inconsistency, perception and memory biases, framing, intransitivity, neglecting base rates, attribution errors, social loafing, sunk costs and behavioral traps. It makes quite clear that we do not decide in a "rational" way, but it does not explain the actual process we use to make decisions. Additionally, the author shows that we are not good at probability and statistical analysis, but he does not explain the calculations we should have done were we "rational decision makers". (He could have included it in an Appendix). If you already know this kind of math or if you are not interested, then the book can be read without it. Finally and although the book is very interesting and full of insights, I need to say that I am glad that I bought a used one, since its price seems not too rational to me either.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Work
This work by Scott Plous should not be taken lightly. Dr. Plous, indeed, reviews the literature, but he also puts the missing pieces to the puzzle together as you try to understand how we got to the point we are today in the Psychology of judgment and decision making. Without this comprehensive review, it is hard to put other books in context. Many books explore specific persuasion principles and the psychological aspects of decision making. The problem is, how to you put all of the pieces together to make sense of it all. Plous gives the big picture so you will have a place from which to view all the other articles and books you read. I read this book four times and tried to pick apart each paragraph to see how it could apply to influencing others. I promise you the pearls are there if read each page with the goal of understanding how it can be applied in the real world. This book was my top 2 of all time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
One of my favorite recommendations to non-cognitive psychologist friends in addition to required reading in several of my courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it and will read it again.
I think it is probably the best book on decision-making psychology I read. This book is full of great insights and tipsinto the decision making. It gives a very well rounded overview of the many aspects of decision making: selective perception, memory, biases and heuristic, behavioral traps, etc. It is also one of the more easily read books on the very complex subject. It has a large number of relevant and easy to digest examples.

Product Description
This fascinating book makes an important contribution to the history of the social sciences. It tells the largely hidden story of how social psychology became an international social science, vividly documenting the micro-politics of a virtually forgotten committee, the Committee on Transnational Social Psychology, whose work took place against the back-drop of some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century. Overcoming intellectual, institutional and political obstacles, including the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the military coups in Chile or Argentine, the committee struggled to bring social psychology to global recognition, not as part of a programme of intellectual imperialism, but motivated by a mixture of intellectual philanthropy and self-interest. Few authors could tell this unique story. Serge Moscovici is undoubtedly the best-placed insider to do so, together with Ivana Markova providing a lucid, erudite and carefully documented account of the work of this remarkable group.

This book will be an essential resource for any scholar interested in the history of social psychology, as well as upper-level students studying the history of the social sciences. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing historical review
The institution of social psychology is a product entirely of the 20th century and one that has only recently entered the public consciousness, whereby commentators and analysts are able and prepared to use the theories and findings of social psychologists in preparing their accounts of social events and processes. The concept of "cognitive dissonance", for example, appearing for the first time in the writings of Leon Festinger in the mid-1950s, has only in the past decade entered the lexicon of commentators, and the work of Stanley Milgram, on obedience and deference to authority, has again only relatively recently become current (and contestably so) in the debate on genocide and the history and understanding of the Holocaust. The history and representation of social psychology as an institution has also been almost universally American-centric. Most social psychologists are trained and work in the United Sates and bring to the discipline their own culture and world views. This book, by two renowned European trained and acculturated social psychologists, provides a history of the development of the discipline in Europe. Itshows how diversity of epistemology and history can change and advance the understanding of the processes and outcomes of human social behaviour. The European social psychologists who engaged with American social psychologists in the 1960s brought to bear a wealth of experience about human behaviour that was ill-represented in American thought. Serge Moscovici himself, a Czech citizen trained in France, and Henri Tajfel, a Polish psychologist trained in Britain, had personal experiences that could and did transform the ways in which everyday social contexts could be understood.

This historical account presents the development of the joint work between American and European psychologists to create and to succour the existence of a European social psychology, developing the best of the American work and representing the European experience. This is a work that can truly present the epistemology and the history of the creation of an institution. The problem is that, although it is based so primarily upon the personal experiences of the two authors, it fails really to ignite the excitement in the reader that it should. It is so personal, so based upon the diaries of the authors, and the day to day work of committees and budgets and minutiae, that the expansion of the consciousness of the protogonists is never demonstrated. There is no excitement of an intellectual history. This is a history of an institution. Institutional and organisation history is important, of course, but for a discipline to develop and to expand there must be the understanding of the sources of the discipline, not simply an account of who paid for what and when. As a person with a real experience of what it was to live as a social psychologist if those times, as a member of a pivotal summer school organized by the European Association in 1967, when a whole way of looking at social behaviour was changed by the excitement of group participation and the dynamics of social interaction, this book is a pale imitation of that experience.

This is an important volume for historians of social psychology. But it is not able to give to that history the vital ingredient of the personal, of the idiographic, which, however biased and flawed that may be, nonetheless gives the vital element to what is a human and social experience. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars difficult professional topics
Within the United States, this book brings together various ideas for social justice that are likely to be encountered by counseling practitioners. There is a broad scope of topics, that in its own way, reflects the diversity of the nation and of its problems.

So what are some of these problems? One addresses wellness in schools. Mostly perhaps about the physical well being of students. Then there is outreach to what are termed underserved populations. Mostly urban youths. They might have trouble accessing traditional mental health services. In part, possibly due to limited English skills.

Another topic is college women who have disablities. They often have trouble getting married. While this is not a preferred option for some women, for many others it is, especially as a social marker of status. So counseling is often needed at the college level for disabled women.

Homeless mothers are another topic. Here, the difficulty of finding safe shelter and of finding and holding down a job are compounded by trying to retain custody of a child. Especially when well meaning government agencies might try to take the child away. A very difficult and challenging situation for a counselor. ... Read more

Product Description

Addressing an issue of central concern in social life, this authoritative book examines how having or lacking power influences the way individuals and groups think, feel, and act. Leading international experts comprehensively review classic and contemporary research with an eye toward bridging gaps across theories and levels of analysis. Compelling topics include the evolutionary bases of power; its effects on physiological processes, cognitive abilities, and health; what sorts of people are given power; when, how, and whom power corrupts; and power dynamics in gender, social class, and ethnic relations. The integrative concluding chapter presents a cogent agenda for future research.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Social Psychology of Organizations
An excellent monograph on social structures.Proven to be a primary resource for my doctoral dissertation.Katz and Kahn provide a precedential resource on the attributes of leadership, impacts of external causal factors on development and health, and key organizational theories which form the foundation on my study.Discussion of open system theory is of particular importance to my research in the area of leadership attributes, development, influences of stress, and the requirements to sustain well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars the social psyschology of organizations
I first read The Social Psychology of Oganizations, by Katz & Kahn, in Spring 1973, as a required reading for Organization Theories Core Course at New York University, Wagner Graduate School Of Public Administration. Based upon my readings and use of this text book for both academic and later business research, I strongly believe that this structurally detailed, powerful and insightful book is a required core, basic studies reading for High School, College, University, Graduate Students and Post Graduate Studies.
The Key Stone to this book is the concept of the Ying, Yang, the polarized interaction, interrelationship(s) of both the Formal and the Informal Organizations within both Public and Private Economy Sector Organizations.
"The formal Goals of the Formal Organization are not necessarily those of the Informal Organization and vice a versa."
This landmark research work by Katz & Kahan, greatly enhances, sensitizes and helps the reader to conceptually organize, catalogue organizations and individuals by both types of organizational hierarchy and types of individuals' characterietics, so that we may more easily deal with both Formal and Informal Organizations and Individuals in a smoother, more rational, less emotional manner.
I teach an Executive Project Managment course in both the Public and Private sectors of the Economy. When teaching Project Management to the US Department of Defense, the US Navy, NAVSEA, I have always recommended the supplemental research use of The Social Psychology of Organizations by Daniel Kats, Robert Louis Kahn, as I do when teaching and consulting within the private sector of the economy.
Katz & Kahan's, The Social Psychology of Organizations, provides the reader with a rich, detailed, structured framework, indeed a structured compartmentalized baseline, against which we can compare multiple types of diversified organizations and multiple types of diversified individuals, as we meet them throughout the lifetime course our public and private lives.
Since a corporation is indeed a Formal Organization, and the corporation is a "Living Entity", then this work allows the reader to understand the diversified (sometimes disfunctional) personalities of the Formal Organization vs. the Informal Organization, corporate culture as they relate to us as the individual having to work and live wihtin their corporate contexts, paramaters and according to their unique set of corporate cultural rules and their respective formal and informal regulations.
From a Psychological perspective, The Social Psychology of Organizations by Katz & Kahan, both fore-warns and fore-arms individuals vis a vis their interactions and inter-relationships with, within large corporations, large social structures and one on one with individuals.
What a true treasure-trove of organizational knowledge, behavior, insights this organizational research really is. This is a timeless piece of organizational research work, as relevent today in 2002, as it was in 1968, 1973 and will be in 2013 and on.
Thank you for the opportunity to review thie fine piece of work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A clear winner!
The Katz and Kahn classic provides readers with an in-depth look at the systems, and modalities prevalent in organizations. It provides a clear map of the impact organizations have on their people, and consequently theimpact the people have on the organization.Of particular usefulness werethe chapters on power and authority, and role behaviors. While the perfectorganization may never exist, Katz and Kahn have gone a long way towardsgiving their readers a better way of asking the right questions oforganizations. Many of their points are germane not only in the era duringwhich it was written, but will become more critical to e-commercebusinesses as they realize that there is business to conduct after theinitial honeymoon with the product.
