I did not read the description or condition of the book. I can not believe that someone would actually send a book with broken binder at that expensive price. The front pages fall out when your reading and its very fragile when turning pages. Always read the sellers comments. The other books I bought were in excellent condition but they were not from this seller. 1-0 out of 5 stars Attempts at Classification
I'm not sold on social psychology.Part of my issue with this discipline is my personal fight to never let people pigeon-hole me and this seems to want to it on a grand scale. Some of the text does not help one see how issues of individual psychological development tie in to the study of social psychology. This is a great failing because many people no very little about this topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars take a different class
After a semester using the text i have come to the conclusion that the authors, Brehm, Kassin, and Fein, leave more questions then answers and that their sub-par sense of humor is more then just a waste of money. After reading certain sections i get the feeling that the authors do not clearly understand the issue at hand, but rather throw 15 different research studies at the topic covering their uncertainty and topping it off with a dire attempt at a joke leaving the reader completely ambiguous.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
Easy to read yet scholarly. Great illustrations. Space in the margins for notes. Good chapter overviews and summaries. Nice T/F questions to prime the reader. Sources used appropriately. It is truly the ideal textbook.

Social Psychology follows that approach as it presents the most fundamental concepts in the field. It touches on all of the major concepts researchers are currently addressing but is firmly grounded in the basic social psychological theories and principles. A single chapter is included on the impact of culture in psychology, focusing on how the findings and theories might differ in different cultures. Psychologists will benefit from two research studies in each chapter that provide a real world perspective of the material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The importance of understanding culture
This book, written in clear and concise manner, is truly a must have for psychologists and students from all psychology sub-fields. The breadth and depth of issues covered within cross-cultural psychology framework are superb. What is striking about the book is that, upon reading it, one realises how pervasive and potent culture is - from the way we see ourselves (individual level) to nation level differences. Moreover, the book sheds light on the inter-relatedness of each level (ecological, socialisation processes, and psychological outcomes). In this increasingly globalised world where people across nations and cultures are increasingly coming into contact with one another, understanding and respecting people from other cultures isn't so much an ideal notion worth striving for but a critical part to human survival. ... Product Description
Music is so ubiquitous that it can be easy to overlook the powerful influence it exerts in so many areas of our lives - from birth, through childhood, to old age. The Social and Applied Psychology of Music is the successor to the bestselling and influential Social Psychology of Music. It considers the value of music in everyday life, answering some of the perennial questions about music.

The book begins with a scene-setting chapter that describes the academic background to the book, before looking at composition and musicianship. It then goes on to look at musical preference. What aspects of music are crucial in determining whether or not you will like it?

In chapter 4 the authors consider whether rap and rock are bad for young people, highlighting some of the major moral scandals that have rocked pop music, and asks whether these have become more extreme over time. The following chapter looks at music as a commercial product. How does the structure of the music industry affect the music that we hear on the radio and buy?

The book closes with an examination of music education. How does musical ability develop in children, and how does this relate to more general theories of how intellectual skills develop? Do musical skills develop independently of other abilities?

Exceptionally broad in scope, and written in a highly accessible style by the leading researchers in this field, The Social and Applied Psychology of Music will be required reading for anyone seeking an understanding of the role music plays in our lives.

3-0 out of 5 stars A catalogue of reference to music and psychology
This is a useful work that both broadens the sphere of study of the relationship between the discipline of psychology and the study and performance of music and provides a ready reference to a large segment of that literature that future scholars will be able to access. The book examines the relationship between the production, creation and enjoyment of music and the social contexts in which that music is created and enjoyed. It brings together the literature of aspects of music production and enjoyment beyond the narrower precincts of the cognition and perception of music. The authors do a valuable service in reviewing much research and provide the start point for more work. They also expand the scope of study of the conditions under which music is experienced and appreciated, bringing the topic to the state of affairs in the 21st Century and the ubiquitous digitization of content. This is a valuable and quite salutary lesson.

The problem with such a reference work is that it has to treat almost everything with a light touch. Descriptions of research work can sometimes be quite superficial and limiting and criticismsappear rather weak. For example, there is a large section on creativity, a topic of clear relevance to the theme. A number of theories and methods are reviewed, but there is insufficient depth of analysis to enable a beginner really to understand the issues and problems. The interested reader can readily access the material, but the book is the starting point, not the guide that it could be.

Reviews of social psychological research that are relevant are also reviewed with insufficient depth. Studies on social conditions that can act to exacerbate or alleviate performance anxiety, for example, are not reviewed in most cases and those that are are secondary sources. the reference to relevant research in areas of cognition and ways that people respond to music exposure also shows a surprising lack of breadth and depth of analysis. To take this position, of course, can be seen to be unduly critical. To review all relevant material would be an impossible task and render any such monograph unreadable. At the same time, perhaps the authors could have been less adventurous and have limited the scope of their book and considered fewer issues in more detail.

There is, however, much to be gained from this book and much to be savored. The authors have done a great deal to educate the person interested in psychology and in music about how the fields intersect. The authors are clearly enthusiastic about the field, have produced much empirical research in the area and are excellent proselytizers. But the book does, in the end, act more as a catalogue to the riches of inquiry into music rather than introduce the reader to the joys of understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Scholarly Work
North and Hargreaves provide a masterful review of a vast body of research completed over the last 30 years in the field of Social Psychology and Music. As with the emerging field of music psychology in general, there is a need for books like this to begin to synthesize and make sense of the research that has been conducted, often by specialists in diverse fields who normally don't follow each others' work. The authors offer a compelling case for the unique contribution social psychology can make as a counter-balance to the laboratory research carried out in the cognitive and neuroscience fields. Here we have data from people interviewed in the context of their lived experience, examining how music functions within the lives of individuals and groups. I also appreciated their critique of the majority of psychological research to date, which has used classical music almost exclusively as if it were the ideal style of music to study. This bias is unwarranted, given the vast amount of music that is available and present in people's lives, and the diverse tastes that draw people to so many other styles besides the classical genre. Something else is clearly at work psychologically that leads people to so many other kinds of music besides classical. It's time for the research field to become curious about this fact. I found their protracted discussion of research on youth sub-culture and music to be a bit biased toward regarding rap and heavy metal as threats to social order and well-being. Their choice of term, to call these styles "problem music," is itself a problem, which minimizes the compelling forces that draw young people to this music and fairly disregards the benefits that fans find there. No doubt, research shows a clear correlation between this music and serious social problems such as violence, sexism, and self-harm, but their analysis is lacking in nuance to consider this music as a mirror of a troubled social milieu rather than its agent. Overall, there is no other book quite like this, which is so comprehensive and expertly written by two prominent figures in the field. It will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of music, psychology, and the social sciences. As a book of general interest, readers may find it a bit dry and heavy as a survey of social science research. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over-priced!
This is a good book; however, the price is over the top. It shouldn't cost more than $50. It's an easy-to-understand book. Are there better books out there covering social psychology? YES! This one is alright, but the price is terrible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great history book!
This was THE best edited book reviewing social psychological research about 10 years ago (this is the text that was used when I took advanced social psych back in late 90's). So much has happened in the field since then that it is really outdated. I hope Tesser updates this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best social psychology textbook that's never been updated
Abraham Tesser did a fantastic job of assembling the top names in social psychology in 1994 to write this book. Scholars such as Susan Fiske, Daniel Gilbert, and Robert Cialdini wrote a chapter each on the core topics of social psychology. They also presented a lecture, and the complete 12-part lecture series is available on video.

The only problem is, this book gives a fantastic insight into where social psychology was a decade ago, but much research has since been conducted. This is such a pity, because there are few social psychology textbooks that are written for students in 3rd-year to graduate-level courses. Most social psychology books are directed to either introductory students, the general public, or academic audiences. This book filled a gap (catering for advanced students), but has now fallen a little behind the times. It gets five stars for what it was, and for the fact that most of its content is still relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars One-stop shopping
Tesser has gathered a formidable anthology representing the best and brightest of the field. I am impressed by the clarity and relative 'timelessness' of the research he chose and the way each author rose to the occasion to present her or his projects in such a way that a layman could grasp its significance. I have seen the text used in graduate courses, but the language is such that, although challenging, it could be digested by an upper-level undergraduate class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-notch, up-to-date, scholarly, yet entertaining
It is rare to come across a scholarly textbook of research that is relatively understandable to lay people and beginning researchers.Yet Tesser's _Advanced Social Psychology_ succeeds where others fail.It is unlike other disciplinary or subdisciplinary textbooks, written by a single author covering tons of ground. This book is an anthology of reviews describing cutting-edge research in Social Psychology by those who are doing the cutting - the most prominent researchers in the field describing the state of their specialty. So while one does not get the perfectly smooth ('processed') feel of a textbook written by a single author, one gets an intimate feel for what is really being done, and a feel for what is on the horizon, for each line of inquiry by the people who are most interested in the area.

Another outstanding facet of this anthology is the vibrance held within its pages, precisely because it was not written by a single author. Each chapter displays the personality of its author(s).And each is written with the student in mind, not only the attempt to relay information. The book, depite its relative brevity, is filled with (often humorous) examples and illustrations.Terminology, critical to any discipline, is spelled out at the beginning to assure a common ground between author and reader. And, as a book on Social Psychology, the research areas are incredibly interesting and personally relevant:Attitude Change (R. E. Petty), Social Influence (R. B. Cialdini), Attraction and Relationships (M. S. Clark & S. P. Pataki), and Prejudice (P. G. Devine), to name a few. Each chapter educates and intrigues the reader into the complexities of our daily lives that comprise modern social psychological research. This is a must-read for anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of how the world works and appreciates intellectual challenges. And Tesser's _Advanced Social Psychology_ is the clear choice for both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area.

The use of both popular readings and research articles provides students with a broad range of views and theories within the discipline of social psychology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Material
I have a Master's in Behavioral Science that encompasses Social Psy, Behavioral Psy, and Counseling Psy ...my undergrad Social Psy professor used this book as a teaching supplement. I didn't realize the value of it until I was well underway with graduate courses that required research papers.

The advantage this book presents is that it provides the student and professor a single source from which to refer rather than obtaining all the articles individually. It is a great teaching tool because it does contain several classic studies as well as many contemporary studies covering a broad scope of topics that everyone should know and learn in undergrad social psych, which is what it was designed to do.

Accordingly, these studies can provide the student with a solid foundation from which to build. One may consider this research material outdated; however, it was this very research that provided the groundwork for further research. I still refer to this collection from time to time to reinforce the concepts that it covers and to provide my research with even more support.

Nevertheless, a professor could not go wrong using this book as a supplemental learning tool. Again, the information contained in this book is all valuable and useful. Moreover, a professor can use this to teach students how to read and interpret journal articles and how to extrapolate useful information from them. Remember, the articles contained in the book are all valid, peer reviewed, and published in journals. Thus, the information contained in this book is useful in teaching as well as learning, regardless of the publication date of any particular article.

I would definitely use this book as a supplemental for teaching an undergrad social psych class. In my opinion, if you are teaching with this book and are disappointed, then you must not be a very good teacher or you don't understand its value, or you don't posses the intellect needed to understand the material it contains. I freely admit that at first I didn't even care to understand the articles and at first I found it rather mundane to read through any of them until I read them with a purpose. I didn't even realize the books value until I found myself in grad school. I went back and read and reread many articles and even used a few in my required research writings. Realizing the limitations of each study led me in new directions and gave me ideas about what topics on which I should find additional research.
In short, this book is a valuable reference tool as well as a valuable teaching supplement.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book needs to be banned from the classroom
I have had to teach with this book several times, and it always disappoints. If you are looking for a reader that will: 1. foster interest and discussion 2. get students thinking. This is not the book for you. If, as most readers do, you want a couple classic studies and a whole lot of filler, this is your book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The devaluation of those perceived as "different" has profound repercussions both for individuals and for society. This book brings together leading researchers to present groundbreaking findings on such topics as the dimensions of stigma, why people stigmatize others, how targeted individuals are affected by and respond to stigmatization, and influences on social interactions. Chapters are organized around a cohesive conceptual framework that incorporates the perspectives of both the perceiver and the target; the relevance of personal and collective identities; and the interplay of affective, cognitive, and behavioral reactions in stigmatization.
