This Text is a slight revision from an older text and not much new added. It is hard to read easily because the authors insert sources into the text making it difficult to follow the flow. The sources should have been footnotes instead.

I love this. I've had some interest in Psychology in general, so when I needed this book for my Social Psych. class, this was well-informed of all the issues and concepts that are presented in analysing society as individuals and groups. It has opened my eyes to see people in a different outlook when people are rude, inconsiderate, or when people come as "weird."

Besides those particular points, it also helps in understanding your own personal actions. You can receive a lot from this book that can benefit yourself and others for the good of your social environment. Highly recommend this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eda Goldstein & Ego Psychology
Eda Goldstein does a great job of describing, in detail, Ego Psychology from a historical, theoretical, and practical perspective. I was particularly fond of Part II dealing with the ego and its functions and defenses. She writes with a clarity that is difficult to find when reading books dealing with detailed theoretical perspectives. I would highly recommend this book to socials workers and pyschologists alike. It is a wealth of information that you will find yourself referencing again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Ego Psychological Theory
Dr. Goldstein's book provides students with a survey of the major contributors to ego psychological theory. To her credit, she manages to effectively communicate sometimes difficult material without resorting to the complicated jargon that one often finds in similar psychoanalytic texts.Ego Psychology and Social Work Practice 2nd Edition enables beginners to appreciate some of the insights of the ego psychologists without having to read and interpret the original texts. This would be a daunting task and unnecessarily laborious for a beginning student. It also provides more experienced clinicians the opportunity to review material germane to clinical practice or as an accompaniment to more advanced reading.

Product Description

Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction explores how social behavior is goal-directed and a result of interactions between the person and the situation.

In addition to an overhauled design in the 4e, Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction has two elements that continue to set it apart from other social psychology textbooks.

A unique integrated approach to social behavior: Rather than providing a laundry list of unconnected facts and theories, the authors organize each chapter around the two broad questions: (1) what are the goals that underlie the behavior in question? (2) what factors in the person and the situation connect to each goal? The book thus presents the discipline as a coherent framework for understanding human behavior.  The new subtitle, “Goals in Interaction” underscores this integrated approach to understanding behavior.

Opening mysteries: Each chapter begins with a mystery of social behavior, designed not only to grab student interest, but also to organize the ensuing discussion of scientific research: Why would a poor black washerwoman give away her hard-earned life-savings? What psychological forces led the Dalai Lama, the most exalted personage in Tibet, to forge a lifelong friendship with a foreign vagabond openly scorned by Tibetan peasants? Why would a boy falsely confess to murdering his own mother?

Product Description

One of the most brilliantly original of American pragmatists, George Herbert Mead published surprisingly few major papers and not a single book during his lifetime. Yet his influence on American sociology and social psychology since World War II has been exceedingly strong.

This volume is a revised and enlarged edition of the book formerly published under the title The Social Psychology of George Herbert Mead. It contains selections from Mead's posthumous books: Mind, Self, and Society; Movements of Thought in the Nineteenth Century; The Philosophy of the Act; and The Philosophy of the Present, together with an incisive, newly revised, introductory essay by Anselm Strauss on the importance of Mead for contemporary social psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Theoretical Maverick at his brooding best
Although among theorists, George Herbert mead must be considered the "theorists' theorist," he nevertheless remains a towering enigma who marched through life to the cadence in his own head. A pragmatic philosopher by both training and intellectual predilection, and a life-long friend of John Dewey, Mead was also a brooding, pensive, tormented, uncertain craftsman, whose dabbling into Sociology turned out to be more important than the whole of his contributions to his chosen field, philosophy. He is known best for his ambiguity and for his paltry professional output owning in large part to an obsessive need to rewrite, rework, and massage his ideas until either there was nothing left of them, or they had either come full-circle and watered-down to the last precipitate. In the end, his endless massaging amounted to procrastination that left the task of pulling together his large fragments of theoretical papers, to his students and admiring colleagues.

That said, Mead is important not because of these eccentricities, but because until the end of his life he was a deep structure systemic thinker unafraid to embrace "cutting-edge," and sometimes even tentative ideas -- especially those borrowed from the hard sciences which often served as the bedrock of his theoretical enterprises. He is known best for his large ideas, such as that science is the best instrument we have for intelligence control over our environment, for promoting the idea that even discrete interactions are affixed to the larger reality in a holistic way, for fully embracing and then evoking Darwin's Theory of evolution, and for his almost maverick interactionist posture that went against the grain of established structuralist theoreticians. He situated himself somewhere between the American pragmatist school and the European phenomenological school. Thus he was an intellectual Maverick without being intellectually promiscuous. He followed science more closely than he followed theoretical developments in either philosophy or sociology, or on either side of the Atlantic, and was quick to adopt the changing worldviews of the leading scientists, especially that of Darwin and the Quantum Physicists.

Mead believed "intelligence" to be a verb and that "perception" by definition can never be passive: only active. To "perceive" is to be alive in the world and engaged with ones environment. According to Mead's theory, it is this "act" (of perception) and its emergent interactive and communicative properties that define social structure. Therefore interactions are not (as his critiques claim) structure-less: for process always precedes, is prior to, and is instrumental in defining form and shaping structure, Thus, following Berger and Luckmann's seminal "The Construction of Social Reality," fundamental to Mead's theoretical formulation, is the notion that social structure emerges from social process, i.e., from social interactions and communications.

Thus as a result, the "social order" too is an emergent property of communications as that process matures and evolves. This "emergent evolution of communications" definition of the social order implies that the "social order" is perhaps less well defined and has many more degrees of freedom than we might at first want to admit. What is difficult to see at the level of context alone is that the social order is very much a "negotiated reality," one in which the individual is "free" to break the rules of society as well as to help reshape them.

Modern societies then, according to Mead's formulation, are not static, unified, homogeneous, well-defined entities that dictate their rules from the top down. They are in fact congeries of bottom up sub level social worlds, sub-worlds that are continually coming into and going out of existence; sub-worlds that are continually being negotiated with those of competing interests and are being reified in institutions and social organizations.

An enduring feature of these sub-worlds (that eventually becomes the centerpiece of Mead's explorations) is the idea of social movements. Again "social movements" are systemic processes, and not always nationally or culturally dependent or determined. Nations for instance are not (as the common wisdom imagines them to be) monolithic units held together by a core set of values, etc., but are territories in which many interacting sub worlds exist. These emerge, come alive, evolve negotiate and then die. Thus evolution is not just an attribute of these sub worlds, but a larger and higher systemic process that flows within as well as above them and the societal processes and institutions they bring into being.

Undergirding all of these novel ideas was Mead's belief that Intelligence plus symbolization, plus the self-reflexive ability of man, constitutes the ultimate palette for individual self-creation and self-construction. A prominent subtext of this view is the notion that it was Darwin and the quantum physicists who released man from the shackles of determinism.

As a personal note, I worked under the leadership of the renown Professor Charles A. McClelland on the World Interaction Survey (WEIS) at USC., which (without knowing it at the time) was in a real sense a bold attempt to realize in the real world Mead's theoretical approach. We used computerized newspaper clippings of international events from around the world as a basis for measuring international tensions based solely on cross-national communicated interactions. Although at the time, McClelland's "interactionist approach" was fashioned after and grounded in the theoretical frame work of the General Systems theorists such as Ross Ashby, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, et. al. While we were remotely aware of Mead's work, it would have been impossible to see its full power in context at the time. For much of his work appeared as scattered fragments. At the time I had read Mead's "Mind, Self, and Society" missing the deep implications it could have had for our project altogether. The WEIS project did have some success (used as a basis for university research, in the intelligence community and by a few military contractors for a time and is still being maintained by Professor Rodney Tomlison at the U.S. Naval Academy) and then died a normal death. But what a missed opportunity!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, readable... a very good book
An easy-to-read, very informative book, covering a wide area of interest. Not just the details, but also the larger picture is well-presented.

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not capturing
"Social Psychology" by Smith and Mackie is an ok text. It isn't great, but it doesn't totally fail to inform the student about the issues that social Psychologists of today face. The bottom line is that the book has an overabundance of examples, but wading through them to find the meaning is difficult.

Aesthetically the book is terrible. All blacks and light blues, it wears on the readers eyes. Unlike publishers like Wadsworth, Psychology Press seems to not be too keen on keeping the reader focused on the book. This may not bother all people, but reading about norms for an hour and a half is bland on it's own. And when adding few variations to the text, it becomes quite the chore.

2 out of 5 because the book does it's job. It just doesn't do it very well. ... Read more

Product Description

Amazing deeds of heroism and horrific acts of terrorism.  Undying love, friendships gone wrong, and inspirational leadership.  Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction introduces the student to the fascinating mysteries of social behavior.  By revealing the motives behind social behavior—why people love, hate, lead, and follow, for example—and bridging the person and the social  situation, KNC actively engages the students’ natural curiosity while providing the only textbook with a truly integrative, coherent approach.

A unique integrated approach to social behavior:  What do terrorist bombings, testosterone, one-minute “hurry dates,” Facebook, and political smear campaigns have to do with one another?  Social Psychology textbooks typically provide a laundry list of interesting, but disconnected facts and theories.  This standard approach grabs interest but falls short as a way to learn.  Kenrick, Neuberg, and Cialdini instead provide an integrative approach, one that both builds upon traditional lessons learned by the field and pushes those lessons to the cutting-edge.  By organizing each chapter around the two broad questions–“What are the goals that underlie the behavior in question?” and “What factors in the person and the situation connect to each goal?” –the book presents the discipline as a coherent framework for understanding human behavior.  Expanding the integrative theme in this edition, KNC highlights social psychology as the ultimate bridge discipline–connectingthe different findings and theories of social psychology, exploring the field’s links to other areas of psychology (e.g., clinical, organizational, and neuroscience), and bridging to other important academic disciplines (e.g., anthropology, biology, economics, medicine, and law).

Opening mysteries: Each chapter begins with a mystery, designed not only to grab student interest, but also to organize the ensuing discussion of scientific research: Why did the beautiful and talented artist Frida Kahlo fall for the much older, and much less attractive, Diego Rivera, and then tolerate his numerous extramarital affairs? What psychological forces led the Dalai Lama, the most exalted personage in Tibet, to forge a lifelong friendship with a foreign vagabond openly scorned by Tibetan peasants? Why would a boy falsely confess to murdering his own mother?

This book was for a class and the subject of the book (social psychology) is a topic I have been through many times before. This book unlike so many textbooks used for college classes gets to the point and not in a roundabout manner. There is no manner of wording that is long and wordy without really saying anything. The book states what is needed without the extra "fluff" wording that most textbooks use. I would recommend it to anyone starting out in Social Psychology or anyone interested in this field! ... Good value. Condition was described accurately and that was really appreciated! Shipped quickly and in time for my class.
Would buy from dealer again.

4-0 out of 5 stars So informative!
I read this text in conjunction with my social psychology class and it was an informative and pleasant read!

3-0 out of 5 stars I Would Have Adopted It--Even Without the Peer Pressure
Our university adopted this text through the usual committee process--into which I did not have direct input. So I am in a position to grumble about it as a psychologist and as a sometimes-instructor.But I don't care to do so.This is a reasonably good text that covers the standard areas of social psychology, has been kept up to date, and has a good set of student learning aids.

Sandwiched between the introduction and a closing survey of applied disciplines, the ten meaty content chapters serve up a satisfying helping of core topics in social psychology.Chapters two through eleven cover Social Cognition, Social Perception, The Self, Attitudes, Stereotyping-Prejudice-Discrimination, Interpersonal Attraction-Close Relationships, Social Influence, Prosocial Behavior, Aggression, and Groups and Individuals.Across chapters, the authors emphasize broad themes of emotion, culture, neuroscience, evolution, gender and social aspects of the web and other technologies. My only complaint is that the Aggression chapter comes so late in the chapter sequence.Makes me kind of mad, it does.

Three types of boxed sections are distributed among the chapters and describe selected topics in depth."Building the Science: Classics of Social Psychology" sections highlight important research and theories that have influenced the evolution of social psychology."Social Psychology: What It Tells Use About..." sections relate the field to aspects of daily life."Making Sense of Common Sense: A Social Psychological Perspective" showcases research findings that challenge "what everybody knows" about key topics. There are eleven of each type of section. They are well-written and fairly interesting. Most of them, anyway.

Students are given assistance in mastering the content by standard instructional features. They include effective section summaries and review questions, end-of-chapter summaries, well-annotated charts, and a suitably comprehensive glossary, references section and subject index.Students have come to expect and rely on many of these features. It's harder to teach them when a textbook does them poorly. This text does not disappoint.

I would have recommended this book to my department and don't feel particularly grumpy about having missed that committee assignment.I will recommend it to you.Whether faculty or student, you will do well with it.It's too expensive, of course--but that's just how it is with textbooks these days.

1-0 out of 5 stars what delivery?
I ordered this item and it was sent to my apartment. Now mind you I have ordered plenty of times through amazon and I have never had any issues with receiving books I have ordered. Well this time around I waited 3 weeks and then I look online to check the status where my Social Psychology book was and it said that customer refused delivery!?!?! I contacted the seller and asked them why it said I refused delivery and they had no answer. The only good part was that I was able to get a 100% refund. This was a huge inconvenience to me seeing as to how now I dont have the book for class. Bad experience this time around. ... Read more

I like the book. It's pretty great for a used book because there's only a few highlighted pages. The book came pretty promptly which was totally awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Social Beings
This text was required reading for a Masters level class in Psychology. Fiske has a refreshing way of writing in that she talks to you as if she is lecturing. She asks questions and then answers those questions with empricial research. She seems very knowledgeable and well versed in the study of social psychology. I am mid way through the course and so far I give the text a thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook
Ultimately, this is a textbook. It is a very good textbook that covers all the material it should, and enhances it's coverage with examples that occur in real life. If you're serious about learning and don't mind reading a textbook than this is a good one to start with. If you're simply dabbling in the study of Social Psychology I'd start with Cialdini's Influence book which is more reader friendly although doesn't cover all this material. ... Read more

This title presents readable research. This distinctive, theory-driven text uses 'The Self' as a theme to give students a meaningful context for exploring the key concepts of social psychology. 'Applications' sections have been incorporated into most chapters, and 'Featured Study' sections at the end of every chapter summarize the purpose, method, and results of recently published scientific articles. Retaining the emphasis on methodology, the text also continues the tradition of strong gender coverage, while expanding the coverage of social cognition and social neuroscience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent alternative to the high priced version
A plus of this book is that the content is Identical to the edition sold in the US.Comparing prices this was a no brainer for content and savings on a college budget.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if...
If you enjoy psychology and like to know the basics of social psychology then this is a must read, I haven't read other social psychology books, but this is a good book. I read it at my first psychology term in Denmark, and it is one of my favorites books at the University so far.

Cons: I wish it had another writer on the book so it would present better and less biased examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!!
I liked the way Stephen Franzoi writes and enjoyed reading this book so much I returned the borrowed copy and ordered one of my own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, although too much jargon
I like this book because I think it does a really nice job of incorporating ideas of social psychology with their respectable theorists. However, I would not encourage professors to use this book because it is abit too broad. ... Read more

Product Description
Social psychology is a flourishing discipline. It explores the most essential questions of the human psyche (e.g., Why do people help or harm others? How do influence professionals get us to do what they want, and how can we inoculate ourselves against their sometimes-insidious persuasion tactics? Why do social relationships exert such powerful effects on people's physical health?), and it does so with clever, ingenuitive research methods.

This edited volume is a textbook for advanced social psychology courses. Its primary target audience is first-year graduate students (MA or PhD) in social psychlogy, although it is also appropriate for upper-level undergraduate courses in social psychology and for doctoral students in disciplines connecting to social psychology (e.g., marketing, organizational behavior). The authors of the chapters are world-renowned leaders on their topic, and they have written these chapters to be engaging and accessible to students who are just learning the discipline.

After reading this book, you will be able to understand almost any journal article or conference presentation in any field of social psychology. You will be able to converse competently with most social psychologists in their primary research domain, a use skill that is relevant not only in daily life but also when interviewing for a faculty position. And, most importantly, you will be equipped with the background knowledge to forge ahead more confidently with your own research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on management ever written
This is one of the rare books on organizations and management that does not age. Its insights are as sharp and useful now as when I read the book in graduate school 30 years ago.Filled with superb insights about people, their motivations, and why they organize.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best business book ever written
This book is that rarest of commodities....an attempt to catch the act of serious (but also playful) thinking in mid-act.Worth many reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Social Psychology of Organizing
OUtstanding service. It came before time announced and was in mint condition. Thanks,

5-0 out of 5 stars Do something. Now decide what have you done.
Weick in his brillant book shows how different is organizational practice from what we try to believe in. He suggests a completely different from traditional approach to organizations - he claims, that in organizations people attach sense to their actions AFTER they perform them, but afterwards try to reason they 'had decided' before. Unclear as it may seem, it is pretty easy to grasp from the book.Weick also develops a notion of 'organizing' rather than 'organizations' and shows how processes are important in describing actions performed by organizational actors. The book is old, but is worth studying for researchers, scholars and even the consultants.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grammar for understanding
Weick book is based on a few simple principles: organising is a kind or reiterated, continuous, evolutionary process of interaction. All kind of simple theories on processes are true, most of all the process of callingsomething "true". Its is true because it has been called so. Ourgoal: reduce equivocality, equivocality introduced by (external) changes. The book contains examples, case studies, facts, theories and cartoons onthe way we organize organizations. It has even picture you may finishyourself! Somebody stole my edition years ago - or thought i had agreed ona long lease contract -, and that book was loaded with annotation, dirtyand used.
