Product Description
This book, The History of Black Psychologists: Profiles of Outstanding Black Psychologists is about the origins and development of African/Black psychology. It is essentially a sequel to Robert Guthrie's book Even the Rat Was White: a historical view of psychology (1976). Whereas Guthrie's book contains the history of early Black Psychologists (as Drs. Francis Cecil Sumner, Kenneth Clark, and Martin Jenkins to name a few) from 1920 to 1950, this book contains valuable information from the 60's through 2000 about why, where, and when the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) was organized and developed. In addition, the book includes the autobiographical and biographical profiles of the lives, achievements and contributions of nearly 50 outstanding Black psychologists. There are many hard working, dedicated, and educated black men and women professionals whose success stories have not been told. Although their peers and colleagues respect many of these professionals, only a select few have been reported as "outstanding." What is it, then, that qualifies one as being exceptional, above the ordinary and outstanding? It is hard to define in terms of human traits and accomplishments. What is easier is to provide examples rather than explanations of what it means to be outstanding. Such individuals who exemplify the definition of outstanding are many unknown Black Psychologists. This book will present some of these Scholar Activists. It is apparent that the majority of the Black psychologists made it against the odds. Many of these psychologists were born in southern states and had to migrate to northern states to receive a graduate education. For Black achievement is invariably a triumph over odds, a victory over struggle. In order to receive graduate education these psychologists report how they had to overcome the destructive effects of racism. Frequently, they were the only Black students in the graduate program. But they still made it despite the racism ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely applicable in working with athletes
I am a sports psychotherapist in private practice and integrate James Loehr's concepts when working with clients.I utilized his Competitive Adjective Assessment when working with a master level women's cycling team.It helped them gain insight into their strengths and weaknessess and then to set goals based upon the results. In addition, the assessment pointed out the discrepancy between how they see themselves vs others (ie coach, teammate). In addition, the author's stress/recovery model makes is an effective approach in building toughness in sport and life.

I've now purchased 5 copies of this book to give as gifts. Fantastic material covering everything needed to reach what Loehr calls the IPS Ideal Performer State. I also like that Loehr includes a section on physical conditioning being key to being mentally tough. I have two friends who are professional MMA fighters and they've got a lot out of this book as well. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! (I'm a Cancer Survivor)
I was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer 1 year ago, and have now been through a mastectomy and chemo. While home on short-term disability, I read more than 50 books on cancer, in my efforts to understand what was happening to me from a medical standpoint and to cope with it psychologically. This book was the best one I read all year. It literally made me feel as if I were sitting down with a skilled therapist and getting some much-needed help. The author has obviously learned a huge amount from the cancer patients he has known (whom he credits throughout the book--he thinks of himself as merely passing on their wisdom to other cancer patients). This book shed light on many feelings and family situations I've experienced. I plan to read this book again and again, and to use it as a starting point if and when I see a therapist. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and profoundly helpful
Dr. Kneier has written a superb and profoundly helpful book. I am a clinical psychologist and in a heartbeat I would recommend this book to my cancer patients. The work is filled with wisdom and reflects the author's decades of experience. The author is honest and realistic yet also deeply compassionate and hopeful. The book is extremely well written, touching, and often moving. The work provides cancer patients with useful psychological guideposts and practical advice. The work is also philosophical and deals with central issues and dilemmas of life and death.

The author guides people with cancer through the emotional territory needed to face the disease. The book addresses the emotional challenges of cancer and does not ignore their complexity and difficulty. The book's scope is comprehensive and helps someone with cancer deal with the wide range of emotional, interpersonal and psychological aspects of cancer. The work can be liberating for those cancer patients that are psychologically stuck or who have unhealthy emotional reactions. The author sheds light on critical issues involving a cancer patient's relationships with family and friends, and he recognizes the central role of connectedness to others.

This book is not just a "how to guide" about dealing with cancer but is a work which empowers a person with cancer. While the book is practical and offers profoundly helpful guidance, the book is also existential and encourages the person with cancer toward a search for meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Inspiring!
Wow, what a powerful and insightful book. Dr. Kneier writes with empathy and uses words that inspire. He finds the "right" words for many situations when dealing with cancer. One of the ten essays broaches the subject of God and covers what many might find helpful when dealing with "feelings" associated with this horrible disease called cancer. Trying to find that positive attitude, finding gratitude when there seems to be none, and how one might help a friend or loved one maneuver through the many stages of this disease are all covered in this wonderfully written paperback.Thank you Dr. Kneier for taking the time to help others; your kindness goes beyond words. This book will help many "find their way".Finding Your Way through Cancer: An Expert Cancer Psychologist Helps Patients and Survivors Face the Challenges of Illness ... Read more

Product Description
Successfully completing the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) exam is the typical requirement for licensed practice and employment as a psychologist in public education. Until now, most graduate students and other professionals relied only on informal study guides or information provided by the test publisher (Praxis). Although students need to utilize informal study guides, this insider's book is essential for effective preparation. Most important, the School Psychology Licensure Exam Guide is one of the very few publications to provide a complete practice test! In addition to a mock quiz with highly similar test items, this guide provides a thorough review of key concepts, theories and advice. If you plan on becoming a school psychologist and taking the NASP exam, then the School Psychology Licensure Exam Guide is a necessity. ... Read more

This book was created in 2004 and the Praxis II School Psychology Exam was updated in 2008.I would not use this to study because it is out of date.Study from the Best Practices series and buy the downloadable ETS Guide. If you do some practice questions and review the matieral you are least familiar with, you will do fine.Study the ethics guidelines from NASP, their position statements, and the most important special education laws. You don't need this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for simple, low stress prep
I'm an Ed.S level school psychologist who has been practicing in public schools for three years now.I purchased this book when I took the Praxis for School Psychology in 2006.I'm not sure how the test may have changed since then, but this book was a quick and simple way to prepare for the Praxis.I've never been a big fan of big study prep books, especially for content areas. If you've taken two years of graduate courses to prepare for a career in school psychology and aren't ready for the Praxis, no book is going to change that for you now. What this book does well is outline the major areas covered on the Praxis, such as ethics and evaluation, so you can identify what areas might be particular areas of personal weakness which will allow you to target what areas you should be brushing up on.The sample test in the back was probably my favorite part of the book, as it allowed me to get an idea of what to expect as far as the style of questions on the Praxis, which is very helpful since there weren't very many study guides for the School Psychology Praxis exam when I took it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Guide
This book was very helpful in preparing for the Praxis II: School Psychology Test. It not only gave general studying guidelines, but also went through bullet points of all of the most important information to study for each section of the test. The only drawback is that it is a little dated since a new version of this test just came out last year. However, the test sections are similar enough that it still provides a very comprehensive overview of what you need to know. It also includes a practice test at the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars Suite Success: The Psychologist from the Apprentice Reveals What It Really Takes to Excel-in the Boardroom And in Life
Why are some people successful in business and in life and others never quite seem to reach their goals? How is it that some people can withstand traumatic situations and seem to thrive while other individuals seem to have all the opportunities and still can't reach their aspirations. What is the key to achievement: education, luck, or something else?

Suite Success is written by Liza Siegel, Ph. D., the psychologist for The Apprentice and Survivor. Siegel has interviewed thousands of individuals wishing to be cast members for these reality shows in hopes of finding that one quality that makes a person successful whether they win on the show or not. Suite Success is the result.

I found this book fascinating. I had always wondered how individuals even within the same family could differ so in the ability to reach their dreams. We all have difficulties, failures, and setbacks but the secret to coming out of these tragedies is actually quite simple- it's all in the attitude. Self reliant people look at success and failure in completely different ways. Such people see negative situations as temporary challenges that need to be addressed and positive outcomes as the result of their hard work and diligence.

Suite Success contains lots of examples using participants from The Apprentice that will be particularly enlightening for fans. Nonetheless, those who have never watched the show will find this work just as useful and interesting. Maybe they'll even feel the desire to start watching the show.

5-0 out of 5 stars Optimism and the Power to Change Your Life
Oh no, another "self-help" book. What could be different about this one that makes it a "must read?"The short answer to that is that the research in this book is based on a tremendous sampling of individuals. In fact, the case studies cited by Dr. Siegel are only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. For every contestant who appears on the television show, there are thousands, maybe tens of thousands, who don't pass the preliminary psychological testing. This means that Dr. Siegel's data is drawn from a much larger pool than is at first apparent. As anyone who has taken psychological statistics knows, the bigger the data pool that a researcher can draw from, the more reliable the results that are produced. But the biggest data pool in the world would be useless in the hands of an untalented interpreter. This is not the case with this book.Dr. Siegel is not only able to draw out the often subtle information contained in the data, she is also able to present her findings in a clear and intelligible manner that is perfectly understandable to the average reader. Moreover, Dr. Siegel fleshes out the bare bones of the data with interesting stories about the participants in the television show that appeals to the tabloid addict in all of us, and then lays out a clear program for adapting her findings to the lives of average individuals like you and me.All in all, this is an impressive book that has very broad applicability to many peoples' situation and is certainly not just for business people alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is just plain terriffic!
Suite Success is an easy read and does a great job of explaining the softer side of leadership. There are not many books out there about optimisim or resiliance and this one does an excellent job of tying those features to leadership and is supported by scientific study as apposed to just observation. It has some great tools anybody can use to help them improve thier outlook on life and I cannot recommend it enough!

I hope you get as much out of this as I have.

Product Description
Hidden within each of us is a superstar waiting to come alive. Often we don t find that superstar because we give up too easily or think that superstars have special talents we lack. Follow the Yellow Brick Road shows us that we all have the potential to be superstars in what we love to do. The secret lies in knowing how to bring our superstar to life. This book is based on Dr. White s research into how over 60 ordinary people became superstars. It began by asking how people like Oprah, Richard Branson, Sam Walton, and Lance Armstrong became superstars? Is there a common path that superstars follow? What Dr. White discovered is that superstars follow the same Yellow Brick Road as Dorothy and her companions in their triumphant journey through Oz. They don t start out as exceptionally talented or beautiful people. They often doubt whether they have the brains, heart and courage to succeed, but they climb to the top because they know the way and the right steps to take to reach their goals. Follow the Yellow Brick Road shows you the way. It contains the nine-step road map followed by superstars and provides you with the tools to create your own personal success cycle. It shows you how to identify what makes you special, chart your course, navigate organizational roadblocks and build the types of relationships that you need to excel. In addition, it teaches you the psychological mind-sets that successful people use. You will learn how to manage your emotions, perform at your peak when it counts most, overcome failure, and generate the positive mental energy that sustains all superstars. Each step in the road map is illustrated with examples from the lives of the over 60 superstars in the book. Through these examples you will learn valuable strategies and techniques that superstars use. By applying them to your own life and following the book s road map, you can bring your inner superstar to life and achieve more than you ever dreamed possible. What reviewers are saying about the book: I ve been reading books on successful people to glean their best practices and apply them to me. Wow! Follow the Yellow Brick Road does this all, along with the structure for a successful career path. Very different than any other book out there. Stuart Lecky, COO, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Information Technology Division. Dr. White has written a simple, wise, entertaining, well-researched and profoundly practical book on how to develop the inner strengths that make people successful. But the most poignant part is that Dr. White reminds us of the simple things we need to remember in order to be happy and remain true to ourselves on the Yellow Brick Road of life. David P. Snyder, author of How to Hire a Champion. A riveting and fascinating read. Dr. Thomas Gutheil, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read with wonderful examples
Myra's book is such a great read! She explains every concept with really easy to understand examples from people who are superstars in their own fields! A must buy and a must giveaway as a present to loved ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Are Not in Kansas Any More!
Dr. Myra White is a psychologist who teaches at Harvard Medical School. She is also a gifted story teller. She has very cleverly and very effectively used the well known story of the Wizard of Oz to craft a metaphor for demonstrating how women and men in a wide variety of disciplines have achieved success. Her book, "Follow the Yellow Brick Road - A Harvard Psychologist's Guide to Becoming a Superstar," is both practical and delightful. I plan to purchase multiple copies to give to friends and colleagues who are students of achieving excellence.

Using the Yellow Brick Road that Dorothy and her entourage used to make their way to the Emerald City as a template for a journey to success, Dr. White breaks the sojourn into nine discrete steps. She illustrates principles emblematic of each of these stages by relating vignettes from the lives of successful individuals as diverse as Oprah Winfrey, Sam Walton, Lance Armstrong, Margaret Thatcher and Richard Branson, et al.

Here, in a nutshell, are the 9 stages of the journey that Dr. White has extracted from the peregrinations of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion in the Land of Oz.

Step 1 - Know Yourself

* The key to becoming a superstar lies in understanding our mini-strengths and identifying what we passionately care about in this world.

Step 2 - Know Where You Are Going

* Superstars know what they want to achieve. To become superstars we must commit ourselves to a mission and then pursue it relentlessly.

Step 3 - Know How to Get There

* Our ability to become a superstar depends on more than doing a good job. We must also understand how to build power and influence.

Step 4 - Know How to Create Your Personal Success Syndrome

* To become a superstar we must strategically use the personal powers that we have to acquire more powers.

Step 5 - Know How to Give and Get Help

* No man or woman is an island. Superstars don't do it alone. They have lots of help from others and they remember in turn to help others.

Step 6 - Know How to Manage Your Emotions

* Our emotions can be our biggest stumbling blocks to becoming a superstar. Understanding how to control our fears and anxieties is essential to becoming a superstar.

Step 7 - Know How to Manage Your Performance

* There are key times when we must deliver our best performances. To do this we must learn techniques that let us perform at our peak when it counts most.

Step 8 - Know How to Deal with Risk and Adversity

* The journey to become a superstar is never easy. There are always unanticipated roadblocks and periods of deep despair when it seems that we will never succeed. To survive we must learn how to overcome failure and believe in ourselves.

Step 9 - Know How to Have Fun

* Superstars love what they do. We must choose a path that we find fun and expresses the joy of who we are and what makes us special.

The pages of this book are filled with pithy stories that highlight how superstars who are familiar to us have put these principles into practice. One such story grabbed me, because it showed a superstar, Virgin CEO Richard Branson, in a light I had never seen him in before:

"In 1979, he went to Paris to find someone to set up a French subsidiary for Virgin. There he met Patrick Zelnick at a lunch with the French head of Polygram. Richard immediately saw that Patrick, despite his wild, distracted Woody Allen look, would be a good person to run Virgin's French subsidiary. After lunch, Patrick couldn't remember where he had parked his car. Rather than rush off to another meeting, Richard spent four hours helping Patrick search the narrow Paris streets for his car. Before they parted, he suggested that Patrick come and see him the next time that he was in London. A month later, Patrick showed up in London and agreed to run Virgin's French subsidiary." (Page 112)

I love this story because it demonstrates what I like to think of as "Servant Leadership" as an irreplaceable ingredient in the recipe for successfully following the Yellow Brick Road to superstardom.

This book comes with my strong recommendation. I am confident that you will enjoy the journey of reading it - and your little dog too!!!

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" by Dr White
"Follow the Yellow Brick Road" is the best career development book I've ever read. It is not only very insightful and well researched, but it is fun, straight to the point, and easy to read. Two characteristics make this book unique. First of all, it provides a clear road map instead of loose tips that readers never know in what order to follow. Secondly, instead of using random examples with fictional characters to portray each topic, Dr White uses fascinating facts from the lives of people that have become superstars in fields such as sports, business and entertainment.
I absolutely recommend this book, you will not regret it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
Although the title doesn't contain the word "history," I nonetheless assumed this book was a history of psychology. You know, the kind of history that is largely biographical with a chapter on this great psychologist, and then a chapter on that great psychologist.

It is not.

It's more sociology than history.

I'm not really sure what its uses are, but as an AP Psychology teacher, I decided it held no use for me.

At any rate, it took me about 5 minutes to decide to return the book (only the second item I've returned to amazon in the last half-dozen years).Instead, I ordered the history of psychology book by Ludy T. Benjamin.

Again, if you want a history and/or biography of the great psychologists, then this is not the book for you.

Product Description
Dr. Jack Hattem first became interested in Marilyn Monroe's death at the Suicide Prevention Center in Los Angeles in 1962. After three decades as a Clinical Psychologist he decided to write a factual account of the real circumstances in which she died.

This book is a unique view of Marilyn Monroe, despite the millions of words written about her. It is the result of a research study into toxic relationshops exactly like Marilyn's, where one person tries to drive another to kill themselves.

It is about Marilyn's psychiatric condition and how her psychiatric mistreatment led to her death.

The author, for the first time, offers a psychological view of Marilyn Monroe's life which explains most of her troubled relationships and her addictions.

This book is about the author's need to understand why people choose to kill themselves. It ends with a conspiracy hidden over forty five years.

This book is about why Marilyn died, how she died, and who was directly responsible for her death! Even the Cuban missile crisis played a role in her death. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A HOT Disorganized MESS!
There is very little info about Monroe or his theory. Most of the book is rambling about colleagues and some crazy case studies. The author gives detailed case studies of his patients while making vague comparisons to Monroe and promising he will discuss in more detail "in the next chapter." The book as a whole is very misleading. Much of his limited info is taken from (and he does credit) "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe", which is a far better read. His thought pattern is poor and exhibited in very bad writing. This book was a waste on Kindle. He does include some of the FBI files on Marilyn but they are very poor copies. This is at the very end of the book. No explanation.
Total waste of time and money!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe, Murde by Consent
Very interesting. At the beginning I thought it was more about the author than Marilyn so I thought I would be disappointed but continued to read. Soon I discovered there was indeed never-before revealed information regarding her tragic death and that as I had surmised, Marilyn's death was murder. By divine providence I guess all involved paid for their crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening Read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The reviewer who gave one star must not have read the entire book.Although Dr. Hattem does tell us his life experience, I found it to be not only quite entertaining, but a necessary foundation to demonstrate his credibility on the subject.Furthermore, Marilyn's story was also woven throughout each chapter. The additional chapters by Dr. Jean Hattem and the method research on suicide added an additional interesting touch, that makes this read desirable for the layperson as well as the professional. At the end of the book, Dr. Hattem also includes current FBI information that solidifies his theories.Overall, this is an enlightening journey into an American icon's tragic life and death.I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A faded star
I have always been curious about Marilyn Monroe and her life.Dr. Hattem does a good job with her early life.I think the quote from Sir Thomas Moore "All That's Bright Must Fade",that Dr. Hattem used in the book described Marilyn Monroe. She indeed faded too quickly. db

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It explored a world I was unfamiliar with and found fascinating to find out about. The suicide prevention center was unlike anything I had ever read about. I found Dr. Hattem's and his colleagues' work riveting to read about. I also did not know much of the information about Marilyn Monroe that he has now written about. I don't think anyone has written about her psychological state in quite as interesting and detailed way. I was especially intrigued by all his information on the "Borderline personality disorder" and it was interesting to think of Marilyn as a person who suffered from this disorder. It was also astoundling to read about the conspiracy to murder Marilyn, which I've never heard of before. Thanks for the great read! ... Read more

Product Description
A deeply revealing look at why we spread rumors, why we believe them, and how they affect our behavior.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, rumors were flying about stranded residents shooting rescue workers. In New York City, the Brooklyn Bottling Group’s business was devastated by false rumors that its soda contained sterilizers.

Psychologist Nicholas DiFonzo has studied hearsay for more than fifteen years, and in this book he shows that the process that gave rise to these troubling rumors is fundamentally the same as a tete-a`-tete around the company watercooler.

Why are rumors a ubiquitous aspect of the human experience— whether they’re about plots to wipe out the urban poor through sterilizers or a company’s plan to downsize? Armed with entertaining examples from all spheres of life, DiFonzo asserts that rumors are a window into both individual and group psychology.

DiFonzo ultimately argues that rumors stem from our deeply rooted motivation to make sense of the world. As social beings, when confronted with an ambiguous or threatening situation, our response is to talk to one another—whether at the dinner table, on the Web, or around the watercooler. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Weak Academic Review of the Subject of Rumors
This disappointing book on the subject of rumors is a bland academic overview of a subject that the psychology professor author doesn't define clearly and doesn't even seem to understand well. Throughout the book he uses terms like hearsay, hoax, urban legend, gossip and rumor, never really defining clearly what he is talking about.

He cites a few small classroom studies that he has conducted, none of which can draw any real conclusions other than what his small group of students think. He raises a few famous rumors (most often the Proctor and Gamble devil rumor), but completely skips some of the biggest (such as the atheists' FCC petition, which caused government chaos for decades). Then he uses the example of Obama's response of being accused of being Muslim as a good way to refute rumors. One problem--there is a school document from Obama's childhood that lists his religion as Muslim. That fact is not dealt with in the discussion, which shows the type of incomplete analysis this book is regarding rumors.

He also doesn't really discuss a "watercooler effect," which he admits is a bit different from rumors. He just needed a catchy title for the book. It's too bad because this could have been an analysis of how people take topics in the news and popular culture, discuss it the next day at work, or go online to message boards.Instead the Internet and pop culture are barely mentioned here.

It's pretty much a waste of time. This may have made an interesting magazine article, but doesn't deserve 225 pages, plus another 50 pages of citations!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but n ot much new or not much depth
First, although written by a university psychologist, this is definitely a pop-oriented book more than an academic one. Oh, there's a fair amount of social research, but no real cognitive research.

Distinguishing types of rumors by cause and intent was good, and new. The advice part of the book, about how organizations and bosses can either be more proactive at preventing rumors from starting, or offer an open culture to question rumors as they spread, was also good.

Other that, this book is on the lighter side of reading in general. And, it doesn't have much of a focus beyond the pop level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent discourse on rumor
Nicholas Di Fonzo's The Watercooler Effect, while not my usual fare, turned out to be quite interesting. It is a thorough study of rumors, complete with the results of research that has gone into people's fondness for rumor and its continued preponderance.

I was particularly fascinated with the clear differentiation between what is rumor and what is merely gossip, and the different ways in which the two are disseminated.

Prior to reading this book, I had never considered that rumors could have real value. They help to explain the unexplainable, they provide sources of information in situations of fear and they can be used to pass on information which people should have, but which can't be seen to come from a particular source. The concept of rumor management also had me thinking.

Why people continue to pass on rumors without checking on the background facts (especially now with the proliferation of the Internet) is something I still don't understand.I did appreciate the sources given for fact-checking of the rumors and urban legends that come our way every day via our email.

The examples provided throughout the book, along with the results of the studies done went a long way toward helping me understand the concepts involved.I would have preferred some more detail and cohesion to the examples however. They sometimes felt a little disjointed and truncated.

Far from a dry, boring report however, this book was wonderfully readable and very interesting and I think that anyone who wants a layman's understanding about how rumors and gossip drive our daily interactions would enjoy reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very timely, during election season
The Watercooler Effect is a very timely piece of work. It is, after all, election season. My inbox has been overflowing with forwarded bits of political "information," most of it nonsense. I'd always believed this was primarily designed to sway my vote one way or another, but it turns out there may be other forces at work.

I was most interested in this book because of my interest in political rumors, and it is interesting to consider them in the light of some of the information presented here. For example, people spread political gossip not just to sway your vote, but also to reinforce their own status within the group; according to DiFonzo, "people are are not always primarily interested in the truth when they speak together, but rather to find ways to affiliate and bond with one another."

Another interesting issue is that of fact-checking. I have often wondered why people who forward those viral emails don't take a minute or two to check their facts. After all, who wants to look foolish, forwarding a hoax? Apparently, that is part of the answer: people don't check their facts because they don't want to embarass the person who sent them the rumor. (That has never stopped me, for the record. I am in favor of embarassing mass-forwarders whenever I can.) No excuse, in my opinion, for some of the dreck that gets passed around.

Generally speaking, this is an interesting and timely book, but you won't find any startling revelations here. There are some interesting anecdotes and a lot of common sense information, including some techniques for managing the rumor mill that might be useful for those readers forced to deal with office politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars He Said, She Said EXPLORED!
The Watercooler Effect was surprising to me as I thought it would be a dull, scientific stuffy type read and that isn't my kind of reading. However, Nicholas DiFonzo kept my attention with his smart and clever examples and explanations. In fact, the lack of too much boring research surprised me.
After studying why we spread rumors, DiFonzo also discussed why we believe in them and what rumors do to each of us. We all know how we are taught in school that rumors can spread and change with each telling and this book looks into how rumors can affect our lives and how we act.
DiFonzo studied rumors for more than 15 years and explains the process of how rumors basically get started mostly around areas such as the coffee pot or watercooler at work. Probably more interesting is what he found out about why we spread rumors. Using some humor, the author tells a lot about the person who is spreading them.He found that when people are in an uncomfortable situation, they like to talk to one another to get some relief and thus the rumors are born.DiFonzo analyzed some specialized rumors that play even bigger roles in our lives. Those included ones made in the military and government situations. Thank goodness he found that most military rumors tend to be true while most often political rumors do not. In this highly active political year, I bet we would all agree with that!
The book was an interesting "one of a kind read" and although not my normal kind of book choice, I found it interesting and very clever. It is good to know and be reminded, however, that rumors can hurt people and that most people take them, sadly, at face value.

5-0 out of 5 stars best "textbook" ever
Reading this for my History of Psych class was actually enjoyable. Ludy Benjamin writes well, in clear terms, and has a sense of humor. Hated the class - LOVED this book. I wish he would write on some other topics in psychology as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars good job!

5-0 out of 5 stars BRIEF, BUT ENLIGHTENING
THIS IS A FINE SHORT BOOK ON RECENT PSYCHOLOGY. IT IS WELL WRITTEN AND EASILY READ. BENJAMIN HITS UPON THE MAIN POINTS AND AREAS OF PSYCHOLOGY IN THE "MODERN" ERA. THE SECTION EXPLAINING FREUD'S THEORIES AND THE LATER PART OF THE BOOK DEALING WITH BEHAVIOR, COGNITION, AND AREAS OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY ARE VERY WELL DONE. I AM A SCHOOL PSYCHOMETRIST AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANYONE WANTING A SHORT TAKE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY IN THE PAST 150 YEARS OR SO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very brief, but full of valuable info.
At just a little over 200 pages, this is indeed brief. Nevertheless, it does a good job of organizing the material. It starts at the beginning of the birth of "true" psychology with Wundt while touching upon the pseudosciences of phrenology and physiognomy. It does a good job of explaining the evolution of the science throughout the book and focuses on specific areas in each chapter. However, I would have liked it if the author had delved into psychoanalysis just a bit more, owing to the fact that the field has influenced pop psychology more than any other field and therefore most people reading this book have that kind of background.

Overall, this is a good read, but probably not worth the purchase price for its really just being an overview. You might do better paying a little extra for an old edition of a textbook and reading that, because it covers about the same material, only more indepth. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Me Tarzan, You Jane
Pros
Book filled with tons of text and little space fillers - Yes.
Book offers a different spin (love dice) - Yes.
Book written from a writer interested in the matters of the heart - Yes.

Cons
Book written by a certified head doc - No. [Borrowing glamour-like love tests from a real head doc doesn't count]

Book worth purchasing...?
Well, if you've got time to munch + money to spend + curious mind = Yes, but it.

If money and time is limited: Dodge this bullet and look elsewhere on Amazon/bookseller of your choosing.

Two stars for a twist on the perception of chemistry + maturity in a relationship (love dice).

The downfall of this book arrived when Tarzan-the-writer swung too far into the realm of umm...a "swinger mentality"

Warning/Summary: It's a sex-freeminded-type writer who is "open", if you know what I mean, about lovin'. Affairs are condoned. With his love-dice advice/odds of finding a soulmate, it's a more realistic odd that the reader will first find STDS before finding their soulmate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humane, wise, and applicable advice. A life-changing book!
I found this book on Amazon while looking for help with my love relationship. For having bought it, my thoughts regarding relationships are dramatically changed!

The first word that comes to mind regarding the ideas, theories, and advice of "Love is Not a Game" is HUMANE. So many relationship books give platitudinal advice like "no contact," "be a bitch!", "if he doesn't call you, he's just not into you...move on" etc. Anyone who's ever truly been in love knows these one-liner solutions don't work. They are rash or overly simplistic, or perhaps cut you off from your lover or former lover. These simplistic solutions do not take into consideration the complex dynamics between people, in particular two dimensions which Randy Hurlburt clearly defines in his book: romantic chemistry and emotional maturity. The paradox is that while interactions between people are complex, the forces of romantic chemistry and emotional maturity are measurable and help simplify what is otherwise a hopelessly murky and mysterious emotional landscape.

Hurlburt explains how these two dimensions are the key to a successful (or not so successful) relationship. Using case studies, he shows how different levels of romantic chemistry and emotional maturity play out in a relationship. Reading these case studies and Hurlburt's examination of these forces in our lives will make sense. There is a deep wisdom to these ideas that simply feels right, and with the logical way in which the theories are presented, it becomes possible to better understand the mysterious force that we call "love."

Being able to assess the level of romantic chemistry and emotional maturity in yourself and your partner, and how these numbers (literally, as he uses the analogy of dice to show how the levels between partners compare) tell a story is an elegant and powerful tool. Instead of pining over lost love, you might find out your partner never had that much romantic chemistry for you in the first place. Or you could realize that the ending of a promising relationship has more to do with one or both partners' emotional maturity (or lack thereof) than a "fading" of feelings or other excuse.

Love isn't a game, but you should know the odds. This phrase is repeated over and over again in Hurlburt's book, and it makes more and more sense as you read and understand more of his theories. In addition to ideas of romantic chemistry and emotional maturity, Hurlburt presents ideas of a "safety net" of different levels of relationship (it's ok to not be deeply in love with every person you date or even have sex with; you can have friends who are more mature or less mature than you if you can identify the ways in which these relationships could help both of you grow, etc.), the importance of understanding sexual fantasies, and the intersection of emotional maturity and spiritual advancement. Some of Hurlburt's ideas may be shocking to people who approach life from a more "traditional" point of view with rigid social and gender roles. If the glut of relationship books on the market don't offer any real solutions and instead present a candy-coated "feel better" approach, "Love is Not a Game" offers theories that you can truly put to work in understanding yourself, your partner, and your relationship. I can not recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to broaden one's own awareness and connections
Love Is Not A Game (But You Should Know The Odds) is a relationship self-help book dedicated to aiding the reader in the search for a quality, loving, and long lasting romantic relationship. Using its "love dice" methodology to quanitfy the twin crucial traits of chemistry and emotional maturity in both members of the couple, Love Is Not A Game outlays basic strategies for keeping one's sex life intoxicating, resolving differences of opinion and disagreements, learning how to broaden one's own awareness and connections, and much more. Filled with anecdotes of a wide variety of couples, and also distinguished by a controversial aside on the possible benefits of legalized professional sex as a sexual outlet that does not involve oneself in a relationship with the wrong person, Love Is Not A Game is filled with very practical insights on the human condition that hold universal value regardless as well as a nuts-and-bolts methodology of assigning scores to personalities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and spirituality
We are a married couple, but we like to read and do things to continually improve our marriage. This book is probably mostly for single people, but we also found it interesting and helpful for us.We especially liked the chapter on sprituality where it discussed the "spiritually advanced person" and the three primary personality types that are not spiritually advanced. We also liked the chapter on sexual fantasies - it has helped open our eyes to new ways of exploring our feelings and desires.

We feel lucky to already have a good love relationship as is described in this book. But many of our single friends are looking for good relationships, and we will certainly recommend that they read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Is Not a Game: (But You Should Know the Odds)

Product Description

Howard Gardner is most celebrated for his conception and development of the theory of Multiple Intelligences, which has revolutionized educational thinking.Gardner has also made outstanding original contributions to the study of leadership, creativity, child development, and humanly-fulfilling work.

Prior to Gardner's Frames of Mind (1983), there was little sustained theoretical opposition to the reigning paradigm of IQ, in which it is supposed that intelligence is a single concept known as 'g', exhibiting itself in scholastic attainment and detectable by a narrow range of puzzle-solving tests.Gardner transformed the discussion of intelligence and education by making a powerful case that there are several forms of intelligence, some of which express themselves in activities not traditionally considered academic.

In Creating Minds (1993), Gardner provoked a Gestalt switch in public understanding of creative genius, by analyzing the lives and achievements of seven diverse personalities from Einstein to Picasso, each of whom founded a new "system of meaning."With Project Zero, Gardner directed research into children's artistic development, yielding many controversial conclusions and providing new ideas for educators.Gardner's GoodWork Project is a broad empirical investigation of the experiences of professional workers in a range of occupations, seeking the conditions most conducive to work which is "good" both ethically and technically. His Changing Minds (2004) applied findings from cognitive psychology to explain how people's deep-rooted convictions can be changed.

All these and other topics are explored in this volume, by way of a debate between Gardner and his critics.
