Autism is a puzzle but it can be solved with a team working together.

Fractal and Autism Mathematicians tell us a fractal is a graphic representation of a random set of numbers or behaviors. In any random activity, there is often a level of order that we cannot see due to our visual or cognitive perspective. A fractal image is a pattern of order within the apparent chaos that increases in beauty and complexity as our awareness and vision of it grows. Autism can be perplexing. Children may exhibit behaviors that appear to be random and idiosyncratic with no rhyme or reason. Why does he scream when a certain song is played? Why must all the Froot Loops be purple? The answers to these questions will differ for each child and will always amaze us. The song was in the key of B flat which is the same pitch emitted by the fluorescent light that, when amplified by his auditory sensitivity, is intolerable. The purple Froot Loops match Barney™ a favorite TV character. While seemingly random, all of these behaviors meet a specific need and are communicating an important aspect of who this child is. They are the puzzle pieces that, when assembled, create a beautiful and unique image. ... Read more

Product Description
While it is common knowledge that physical illness affects mental wellbeing and vice versa, there has been a surprising lack of cooperation between psychotherapists and MDs in serving patients' needs. In a fragmented health care system, psychotherapists need practical strategies for effectively collaborating with medical professionals. The Collaborative Psychotherapist provides step-by-step guidance on how psychotherapists can work with their medical colleagues on a routine basis.Such skills are illustrated through a variety of case studies involving adult and child patients commonly seen in psychotherapy and family therapy practice. To answer the questions most frequently asked by therapists, the authors interview four veteran therapists and one medical doctor who provide valuable insider knowledge of how to collaborate successfully. The volume authors also provide advice on how therapists can extend their skills to collaborate more intensively on complex cases that may involve specialists.

Among the useful tools in this book are model letters of introduction, suggestions for follow-up communication, and checklists of medical issues to consider when evaluating patients. All of these can be copied freely and modified according to the practitioner's specific needs. After reading this book, readers will be ready to work successfully with their medical colleagues, ensuring the best care for their patients and, as a byproduct, increase their professional satisfaction and referral base in the community. ... Product Description
Many students and emerging psychologists struggle to understand the APA Ethics Code because they don't understand the bigger picture of ethics in psychology. How do psychologists identify and address ethical issues? What are the most important ethical concepts, and how do they apply to specific settings?

This one-of-a-kind book acculturates the reader into ethical practice in psychology by enhancing critical thinking skills. Rather than explain each of the 80+ standards of the APA Ethics Code, the book examines the code's underlying principles.

The book begins with a basic introduction to the code, including a brief history and an overview of general concepts. Next, it explores in depth four ethical concepts applicable to all psychologists:

competence
informed consent
privacy and confidentiality
avoiding harm and exploitation

Finally, it shows how these key concepts apply to specific psychologist roles, including assessment, treatment, research and publication, and teaching and supervision.

Numerous case studies show how ethical concepts are applied, and a supplemental web site provides discussion questions, a reading list, and extensive other materials to enhance the reader's learning.

This book is essential reading for psychology students in high school, undergraduate school, and graduate school, as well as licensed psychologists who want to improve their ethical decision-making skills and reduce their liability in professional practice. ... Read more

Product Description
Few crimes generate greater public reaction than those where a mother murders her child. We are repelled, yet mesmerized, by the emerging details of cases such as Andrea Yates and Susan Smith.Annually, hundreds of infants and young children perish at the hands of their mothers. How could a mother destroy the first and most fundamental relationship we experience?
In Why Mothers Kill: A Forensic Psychologist's Casebook, Geoffrey R. McKee, Ph.D. uses more than a dozen case studies from his 29-year forensic psychological evaluation practice to help us, and most importantly, prevent these horrific events from occurring. He applies current research findings to analyze, explain, and suggest practical interventions to alter the personal, familial, and situational circumstances that may influence some mothers to kill. With an emphasis on prevention, Dr. McKee sets out specific strategies that might have been employed at various "risk intervention points" occurring before the child's death.
Through the use of extended narratives the author brings to life the thoughts and emotions experienced by women in each of the five categories of mothers he has identified from his years of practice.Additionally, the author presents the Maternal Filicide Risk Matrix which he developed to help mental health and medical professionals determine the risk and protective factors that lead mothers to kill their children.
Students, as well as mental health and medical professionals will find this an important and unique resource. ... Read more

Why Mothers Kill: A Forensic Psychologist's Casebook

In our area, Auburn Indiana, we had a case that could have been potentially fatal for a newborn baby. There was a well written newspaper article in the Kendallville News Sun paper that covered this case and this book was quoted. I bought the book on Amazon and the book was written for anyone who works with people.Specifically mentally health professionals, police officers, teachers, and health care workers could enrich their experiences and make better decisions for people by reading this book.

By reading this book, you too could help to make a difference in someone's life if she may be dealing with an unwanted pregnancy.Talk to people even though it makes you feel uncomfortable. When you suspect a neighbor, teen, friend or family member may be pregnant ask.You could help someone and you may not even realize it. Young mothers, people with mental health issues, and those unwanted accidents can be handled with love.Reach out to others and help. This book opened my eyes too the whys.Understanding the risk analysis will help psychologist, psychiatrists, pediatricians, sociologist, social workers, criminologist, and attorneys.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent forensic resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive Resource
Geoffrey McKee's book "Why Mothers Kill: A Forensic Psychologist's Casebook" provides a comprehensive overview of an important and sensitive topic. The book offers extended narratives which provide vital contextual information necessary to understanding this complex phenomenon.Readers benefit from Dr. McKee's 29 years of experience with forensic psychiatric evaluation and his ability to merge research and clinical experience and to produce practical prevention/risk intervention methods. This exceptional book is reader friendly and one of the best references available on the topic of filicide.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than expected
Excellent. Before reading, I thought it was just a review of cases, but it was more than that.In Chapter 2, the author give a concise and good review of research in the topic of filicide. The author discuss maternal filicide characteristics in terms of demograpgic, education, IQ, marital status, and many other historical characteristics of the cases as well as victim's characteristics.I like the case analysis and the epilogue in which he satisfies our curiosity and give us an update of what happened to each one of the perpetrators after the prosecution.Interesting the many suggestions the author brings light for risk prevention at intervention points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant and Readable
Why Mothers Kill: A title that beacons you to take a second look at this book.It is well worth the look and the read... an in depth research based book that points mental health professionals toward interventions where they might lower the risk of the deaths of children. In today's society we must understand why these crimes occur and do what we can do to prevent these acts of violence. It is readable, relevent, based on research and full of the how tos of interventions so we can help prevent these type of crime. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Guiding Patients through Past-Life Traumas
For anyone who may assume that past-life exploration is all fun and games, this book will be an eye-opener. The patients that Dr. Fiore regresses in You Have Been Here Before have all had traumatic and sometimes horrendous experiences. This book gives us an inkling as to why a veil passes over our minds, hiding our former lifetimes. Nearly everyone, at some point in their lives, knows pain or fear or negative emotions. Dr. Fiore courageously guides her clients through their past-life traumas, with an eye toward releasing them and moving forward, especially in their interpersonal relationships. A thoughtful and intriguing book.

Richard Salva--author of Soul Journey from Lincoln to Lindbergh [UNABRIDGED]

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated But Interesting
Dr. Edith Fiore, a San Francisco area psychologist, wrote this book back in the 1970's, and while it comes off as less groundbreaking now than I bet it did 30 years ago, it is still an engrossing read.

The concept is this: Fiore induced a trance state within a number of her (willing) patients, who then claimed to discover the root cause for their present-day phobias, difficulties and assorted issues. A woman afraid of men and relationships related details of a past incarnation in which she endured disgusting abuse at the hands of a man. Another patient suffered from a crippling fear of heights and saw himself dying after a fall while working on the roof of a Medieval church. Still another among the dozen or so patients whose case histories Dr. Fiore details here, felt his modern-day indecision could be traced to having suffered the consequences of making poor personal choices in several past lives.

This book covers a subject I've always found deeply absorbing and does a good job of describing both the process of regressing a patient to what may be a past life remembered in the subconscious, and also the effects of past life incidents on the present life.

Have we all lived other lives on this earth? I wish I knew. It's certainly an attractive concept. (And in its implications a daunting one.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Fascinating Stories Of Past Life Therapy
Dr. Fiore is a psychologist trained in traditional treatment methods and later in hypnosis. She began to use hypnosis to treat clients and one day she asked a client to go back in time to the origin of his crippling sexual problems. To her surprise, the client jumped back into a life as a seventeenth century priest. The patient and Dr. Fiore explored this lifetime, released the sexual issues and the patient made a startling recovery that traditional therapy had not given him.Dr. Fiore does not try to disprove or prove the theory of reincarnation in this book. She merely tells the fascinating stories of her patients and their recovery using past life therapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A different view on past lives
I found "You Have Been Here Before" in a used book shop, while on a weekend trip... Upon returning home I couldn't put the book down!Having read almost the entire thing in one sitting, I must say it was an enjoyable piece of literature.I have read many books on past lives, but this one was different. The author's focus is on how events in our past lives influence our behaviors (even mental health!) in THIS lifetime. It was fascinating to learn of real cases of people being overly affected by traumas in an entirely other lifetime... and thouroughly different from the usual focus of books on reincarnation.

There isn't much exploration of the afterlife, but only of the effects of past events on our present lifetimes. That is what makes this book unique... to view the metaphysical world through its influence of the world of psychology.

Dr. Fiore's writing style is very casual, making the reader feel as if she is TELLING the stories, and logically arranged. She even renders the transcripts of her hypnotic regression sessions easy to follow... that's no small feat, as all to often such material can leave a reader confused. In all, it is not a challenging book, but one that is easily understood, yet thought- provoking.

The cases were obviously well researched, seeing as she personally obtained the material from her patients... and verified it through the effects upon their lives and mental states. Therefore, there is no need to bog down the readers with tireless historical data, as some authors do, since the focus is on verification through the psychological effects on her patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book
This was a wonderful book.If you are unsure of reincarnation and are looking to learn more go with this book. There are real life accounts of Ediths patients in dialog form.Easy to read and get into. This book mademe a firm believer.Even if you don't believe in reincarnation is a greatbook to read to gain insight in to these beliefs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Sport Psychologist's Handbook : A Guide for Sport Specific Performance Enhancement
With this book, I also had purchased the "Test Youe EQ : Find Out How Emotionally Intelligent You Really Are" and the "Counselling Athletes : Applying Reversal Theory".

Actually these books have been used by my son who are doing his Master Degree in the Psychology in Thailand (a small country in Southeast Asia). His aim is to go through the Sport Psychology Knowhow which is nothing in our Thailand at present. Not too many people know about what the Sport Psychology can do to their Emotional Enhancement and sports.

    I had asked my son on what he get from these books, he told me that;

"Dear dad, all I can say is all the books are great and very useful. They become my bible for what I'm doing right now."

One thing I observe from my son is he is better in controlling his emotion and love his subject of "Psychology" much more than I have
expected before he entered this course. These books may contribute a great assistance to widenning his eyes and also his metal thinking.

Thank you for the writers, at least with your books, you help me guide a man to go for his dream. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars The most congruent person who ever lived
Congratulation's to Dr. Mark Baker for recognizing the profound ways in which Jesus speaks to our deepest human needs, wants and desires. I found this book to be a finely crafted reflection on the most complex and congruent person who ever lived. I appreciate the way Baker discusses complex issues without trivializing Jesus or the psychological concepts. Baker does a nice job integrating the timeless nature of Jesus' teaching with the timeliness of modern psychological insights. I see no discontinuity between theology and therapy. In fact, theology is most therapuetic when it is most faithful to Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toward the serious contemplation of life...
This book should be read by every person serious about looking at the quality of life they live. One reviewer has concluded that the "proof-texts fall short...".This is not a book about proof-texts but about looking at the wisdom of Jesus TODAY through the mind of a psychologist practicing TODAY.The people are real, the quality of life issues are real, but the wisdom is from the mouth of one who lived thousands of years ago -- corroborated by current psychological theory.

The effort is not (in my reading) to somehow characterize Jesus as a touchy-feely person, but to reveal the value of what He said to the world in which we live.

The book takes-to-task some traditional Christian thinking (e.g. what about original sin?people are good, people are bad...) and explores some very different ways (from my perspective) to understand addictions. Finally, Part 2 forces one to consider oneself -- very important work.

110 chapters in 281 pages of text -- that's 2.53 pages/chapter (on average).Makes a great way to start the day with some wisdom for the soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, First of it's Kind.
Before I give my review I would like to breifly respond to the review I just read by Tom Hinkle.I have difficulty understanding why he would write a review like he did, perhaps he had difficulty understanding Dr. Baker's book. For Mr. Hinkle, a self proclaimed "amature" theologian, to insinuate that the biblical Jesus was not represented is completely untrue. I found the book to be honest and totally accurate.Mr Hinkle seems to have missed the entire point of the book. He accuses Dr Baker of promoting a relationship with a therapist over one with Christ. How he surmised that makes me wonder if he even read the book. Judging by how well the book is selling I would say that virtually no one would support his opinion. The book is interesting, and informative. It has great insights into human behavior and the teachings of Jesus.Dr. Baker did an excellent job and I highly reccomend this wonderful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars An unconvincing job of proof-texting
I do agree that Jesus is the greatest psychologist who ever lived, because he knew people better than anyone in history, plus, as Dallas Willard has said in his writings, Jesus is the smartest person who ever lived. So that would make him the greatest psychologist. Unfortunately, this book falls short in proving that. It takes (mostly) fragments of Jesus' teaching out of context to attempt to prove that Jesus was in tune with late 20th-century psychological thought. Of course, psychology is an ever-changing science, so sound theory in that area today could easily be disproved tomorrow. Jesus is presented in this book as a guy in touch with his feelings, so we get the touchy-feely Jesus, as opposed to the biblical Jesus who said he only did what he saw his Father doing. Another fault of this book is that it seems, in a very subtle way, to promote the idea of a therapy-dependent society. After all, relationships are important, and the most important one, next to God, of course, is the relationship with the guy charging you $150 an hour to listen to your problems. Don't get me wrong, this book is not without value. If nothing else, it was informative concerning more recent developments in psychological theory. But I don't think psychological theory was what Jesus had in mind when he was doing most of his teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Psychologist Who Ever LivedIS Mark Baker
Dr. Baker is brilliant. This book settles many age old conflicts between human society and Jesus. It should be required reading for all ministers of the true faith.Truely it is a jewel in my collection. ... Read more

    Product Description
If your investing strategy has relied on the facts—financial statements, annual reports, technical charts, and so on—congratulations! You’re on the way to becoming a successful, complete investor.

But you’re only partway there. If the markets are about mood swings, turbulence, and uncertainty, if the herd buys like crazy one day, only to sell off the next, doesn’t it make sense for you to have a grip on the way in which your individual psychological makeup and emotional state affect your investing strategy? Doesn’t the complete investor need to understand both the facts in his head and the emotions of his heart?

Dr. Richard Geist has combined the art and science of the seemingly unrelated fields of psychology and investing. He shows that investing success means both having and using solid information and expertly understanding, monitoring, and managing your emotions. This is the first book directed at professional and individual investors alike, illustrating how they can use emotions to become more effective at meeting the ever-increasing challenges of today’s investing environment. Dr. Geist’s coverage is stimulating and wide-ranging, including topics such as:

•Recognizing emotional reactions such as confidence and anxiety as clues to making investment decisions
•Avoiding the most common psychological investment mistakes
    •Analyzing your psychological risk quotient
•Reacting appropriately when you’re caught in a stampeding herd
•Learning how patience—or the lack of it—influences investing decisions
•Responding in psychologically healthy ways to losing money in the market
•Gaining the psychological skills you need to sell a stock and learning why these skills differ from those needed when making a buy decision
•Understanding the psychological needs of management while obtaining useful, valid information for making informed investing decisions

Conventional wisdom says “park your emotions at the door when making investing decisions.” Dr. Geist brings a new, important perspective to show that the conventional wisdom is not only wrong but harmful to your financial well-being. Success lies in understanding your emotional reactions to the market and its participants and integrating an emotional understanding of yourself into your investing strategies. The successful investor is, above all, a human investor, not a “perfect” machine-like investor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Head Job
The real value in this book is taking the time to read and reflect on the many skills an investor should have developed. It is not a "fun" read.It is not a book you cannot put down!It should be read over time (like a textbook) and not digested quickly. Some insights may be helpful, like knowing why you hold on to securities that turn out to be losers. It is unlikely to help you decide precisely when to sell but it may free your thinking to know there is a time and you should deal with it.I suggest taking the time to read the book.Expect what you usually get from a book on Psychology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gobbledy gook
I found nothing of value in here. This guy is from Harvard so I thought there would be some poignant, new, insightful analysis here.Instead I found pop-psychology stuff that is entirely unhelpful and nothing concrete in which the reader can put into practice. Not only that, it doesnt provide any improvement or insight into the investment psychology literature.I read 1/2, couldnt bare the rest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I was deeply attracted by the bold tagline printed on the back cover "Dr Richard Geist's rules for using the power of your emotions to out-psych Wall Street" as below:

    1. Leverage your emotions, dont exorcise them. (Understand how your idiosyncratic emotions undermine or enhance your investment decisions)
    2. Dont just rely on the facts. (Understand also the deeper psychological forces that move Wall Street)
    3. Know yourself. (Master an investing behavior in harmony with your own personality and lifestyle, your reaction to anxiety and pressure)
    4. Understand the nuances of risk (Know how you feel when buying and selling)
    5. Break the taboo (Understand your mistakes, and correct them)
    6. Empathize with management
    7. Recognise your investing anxieties
    8. Be an interpersonal investor (expansion of perspective and protection against group think)

Very attractive, huh! So sorry that the author failed completely to write up to what he or his editors promised. Dont know whether the author's writing or story telling skill is so poor or what, the book appeared to be a boring pile of 291 dissociated pages that I find it very difficult to concentrate and read on. There are many real life cases and examples, but I can hardly draw from them any practical and memorable lessons.

In a word, dont waste your valuable time and hard earned money on this. Spend them elsewhere more productively.

p.s. How come the author gave no answer/suggestion/analysis for the 9 page "investment personality questionnaire" at the end of the book?? Should readers bring their answers to the author personally for advice???

5-0 out of 5 stars emotions and money? read this book
This is a book bothevery investor and financial advisorshould read.Rather than proposing a scheme for eliminating emotions from your investment decision-making, which is the mantra of most books, Geist cogently argues that emotions are always presentin risky decisions. His solution is not to ignore them, but instead to understand them andsee how they idiosycratically afftect our investment choices.

Investor Threapy is one of the only books I've read that makes clear how profound the ramifications actually are of integrating emotions into investment decision-making.The book clearly spells out in an easily readable way how emotions influence not only when we buy and sell, but what sectors of the market we choose to play in, how we gauge our own risk level, how we repond to herd mentality, how we deal with loss, and how we so often mismatch our personality to an investing style.

Geist offers a fascinating view of how to understand management, and why it is so important to invest along side a group of trusted others-what he calls Interpersonal Investing.Any reader of this book will come away with information and ideas not published anywhere else on how to use our emotions to enhance our perfomance and results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with the Inner Game of Investing
Reviewer: A reader from Winchester, MA

About half way through this book, I made the same mental connection that I made about 20 years ago when I read Tim Gallwey's classic, "The Inner Game of Tennis."
That is, this is a very fresh and relevant way to look at a complex game phenomenon with a very quiet and objective mind.

While this may not be a book for the technically sophisticated investor, it is highly recommended for a wide range of investors that are looking to create and sustain a personal psychological advantage on the market.

In many ways, this is a book that enables the reader to look at the market in a Zenlike way.Rather than dealing with winning investment strategies, it deals with an often overlooked and more important aspect of investing: creating and managing winning emotional strategies.

Without sounding overly Eastern in philosophy, Dr. Geist deals with strategies to help the average investor focus more of their energies on understanding their personal emotional reactions to the market. His thesis is that you can achieve greater happiness and success by integrating an emotional understanding of yourself into your investing strategies.

Like Gallwey, Dr. Geist provides the reader with a much needed perspective and tools forhelping to manage the most difficult opponent we all face, our own emotional inner game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bernstein's book truly resonated with me
I only wish that I had had the benefit of Dr. Emmanuel Bernstein's book, THE SECRET REVOLUTION available to my educators when I was growing up.I was one of those students who suffered at the hands of "terrorist teachers".While I now have a successful career, it has taken me years to overcome some of the things that so-called educators taught me: primarily, I would never amount to anything because I couldn't concentrate.I can only imagine what I would be today if I had been allowed to just be who I was, a free-thinking little child, curious about everything and one who was terrified of taking tests. Bravo, Dr. Bernstein! I hope this book liberates those who remain afraid that they are failures because a useless system tells them so. Read this book and pass it on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Directions for Education
The Secret Revolution paints the real picture of traditional education, one of terror for many students. Bernstein's specifics ring true in my 50 years of experience with conventional schools and what has been learned from alternatives to regular schools. While hard-hitting, his treatment is even-handed which I find fresh and honest. A powerful readable book about what now needs to happen. It absolutely deserves wide consideration by policy makers, educators and the public.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Dr. Bernstein
If you have read the Harry Potter books, you know how Dumbledore's pensieve draws a spectator into his memories, allowing an outsider to live in and learn from Dumbledore's own past experiences.Dr. Bernstein resembles Dumbledore in many ways, and this book is like his pensieve.

By drawing us into his clear, eloquent memories, Dr. Bernstein introduces us to unique individuals who have crossed his path (a remarkable path at that, through a broad educational landscape). These individuals themselves make the case for Education as Liberation - not Schooling as Oppression. We join them in their struggles and triumphs, and we root for their successes as if they were our friends.

We cannot escape joining Dr. Bernstein in his conclusions as we gallop through these memories - conclusions with implications for our own families as well as for our nation. In order to liberate an individual, we must remove the shackles of testing, drilling, and standardizing imposed by misguided educational policies.Through the sometimes bitter, sometimes transcendant lives of other, we see without doubt that too many ideologues are strangling the souls of our youth, stamping out the light of true learning, and crippling our future.

Resist. If you read this book, and meet the people of Dr. Bernstein's memories, they might inspire you to change the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative education and the preservation of democracy
Frank Jennings, an innovative educator who was the Editor-At-Large of the Saturday Review of Literature and Educational Director of the New World Foundation, had this to say at the dedication of an innnovative school: "Any teacher or administrator who does not know well Alfred North Whitehead's book: Aims of Education and Other Essays, should to declared incompetent."The same can now be said about Dr. Emmanuel Bernstein's new book: THE SECRET REVOLUTION: A Psychologist's Adventures in Education.Anyone who has experienced schooling will identify with the current language of "terrorism" supported by numerous real life examples of both the "best and the Worst" selected from a lifetime of participation in schools and a professional practice aimed at helping those who have been damaged in this system to overcome their school-induced handicaps. Not only teachers and administrators, but school board members, politcians and parents must experience this book. ... Product Description
Psychologists on the March argues that the Second World War had a profound impact on the modern psychological profession in America. Before the war, psychology was viewed largely as an academic discipline, drawing its ideology and personnel from the laboratory. Following the war, it was increasingly seen as a source of theory and practice to deal with mental health issues. With the support of the federal government, the field entered a prolonged period of exponential growth that saw major changes in the institutional structure of the field that spread to include the epistemological foundations of psychology. This book is the first sustained study of this important era in American psychology.Moving back and forth between collective and individual levels of analysis, it weaves together the internal politics and demography of psychology in relation to the cultural environment. It is based on extensive archival research and includes extended discussions of the wartime reformation of the American Psychological Association, the role of gender politics, the rise of reflexivity, and the popularization of psychology, among other topics. ... “Voices are a soul’s signature,” says psychologist Dan Shapiro, who in his daily practice hears plenty of them. For all his expertise, he admits he’s still terrified that“someone will keep something from me, and when they tell me the truth, I’ll be useless.”

Treating other physicians has become one of Shapiro’s specialties. When the obstetrician Amelia Sorvino seeks his help—distraught that her own medical error could have injured a patient’s baby— Shapiro finds his talents as counselor and healer pushed to their limits.Session by session, he worksto discover the sources of Amelia’s anguish--for his own sake as much as hers: he’s familiar with the burden of a doctor’s guilt, and he has seen how loss and trauma, if unchecked, can echo from generation to generation in a family. In this probing, intensely personal memoir, the words “Physician, heal thyself” assume a fresh and moving urgency. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What a touching book!
I had read the author's previous book "Mom's Marijuana" because I had seen him at a cancer survivor's conference in Seattle and I loved his humor. This book wasn't really anything about his journey with cancer although it did come up briefly. It was so meaningful to me because it talks about the patient provider bond and how people can grow and change within a relationship. And in this case both grew. What a touching book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book some time ago
but I remember it quite well. I read it very fast..and I did a lot of reflecting along the way. It was written in a very comfortable style. I do remember that I thought it was an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible story about being human
This is such a wonderful read on so many levels. The title is a perfect play on words, considering the doctor's specialty. The actual story of the gifted ob's misjudgement is fascinating. The account of the therapy which restored her ability to function professionally is equally fascinating. It is tremendously life-affirming to see the humanity of the doctor. Realizing how deeply she cares makes me appreciate my professional colleagues even more. Too often in today's healthcare environment we see people focused on billing and it is easy to lose sight of the sincere desire to help and do good which draws people to the practice of medicine. This book should be required reading for every medical school and residency program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shapiro delivers a passionate look inside
Put the keys in the ignition and take this book for a ride.As you watch where you're heading, Dan paints a breath-taking portrait of the landscape.Like Mom's Marijuana, the focus is a patient's struggle through devastating illness, but this time Dan is the caregiver rather than patient. It's compelling.Once again, I only stopped reading when I was overwhelmed by sleep in the not so wee hours of the morning. You'll laugh and cry, and grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great read
If you are a fan of the narrative non-fiction genre, you will love this book. The author does a wonderful job of telling Dr. Amelia's story through his sessions with her, but also relates it to his own experiences of being a patient himself. It's hard not to be drawn to Dr. Amelia's character - and identify with her and what she's going through. Beautifully written, Dan Shapiro tells this story in a way that's clever and humorous, and has you captivated from the start. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the divorce book for me
This is not the divorce book for me.The title says that a lawyer and a psychologist guide us through things but I'm not getting much of the psychologist here. It's more a mish mash of stereotypical thoughts and reactions and some "protect yourself" style advice.

If you are going to mix emotion and legal issues in one book then you have to actually address the reasons for divorce rather than just taking it as a given. Suggesting that you hire a personal detective to see if your spouse is cheating on you is just insulting but I guess that is what some people have to resort to.

There is a very small section that is just unforgivable pertaining to affairs and made me really dislike the book despite some decent advice elsewhere.

"Sometimes people move away from a marriage as they become involved in a new relationship. Often the new relationship is an affirmation during a vulnerable time that you are lovable, fun, and sexy, contrary to how your spouse is treating you. It can be a chance to act on fantasies that were irresistible to thing about, all but compelling action.... It was a bridge through a transition, but not a good choice for a long-term commitment."

This almost condones affairs as ways to not deal with your own problems.Marriages break up for a variety of reasons but when there are affairs there are a whole slew of personal problems that are not being dealt with.So rather than suggesting that the affair is a bridge to a long-term commitment (which the person having the affair obviously has a hard time with) perhaps a section addressing whether to rethink the reasons for wanting a divorce in the first place.

And elsewhere there was a reference to changing your mind - as if that was a bad thing.Perhaps going through the separation and divorce process really does make one rethink their motives.

There is some good info in here but overall it's not the book for me for multiple reasons. This book is much better in my opinion.Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce

3-0 out of 5 stars Rehash of the same found everywhere else
I didn't find this book to be incredibly helpful, as (a) I have no children, and (b) I technically make more money than my X2B does.I was hoping for some insights on how to come out of the divorce as best I can, but didn't see anything new here.If you don't have any kids, let me summarize what you'll get from these books: Pay attention to retirement plans/401Ks, make sure you have enough liquid assets to make it through the next several years (vs. settling for high value non-liquid assets only), and recognize that divorce is hard!
Personally, I found phone interviews with divorce attorneys to be the most helpful source of information.Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Stop Resource
This is the single best, most complete divorce book on the market. It took me from start to finish and saved me from making some expensive mistakes.Because there's a psychologist who's writing, too, and not just a lawyer, the book tuned me in to some things I hadn't thought about, like how my kids feel if I say something bad about my wife in front of them, or why it's hard to get my financial records together (because it symbolizes that my marriage is actually really over). All in all, this was a super helpful book and a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable author
I know the author of this book and she is an expert. If you are contemplating a divorce or going through one, definitely get this book. It's written for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical divorce advice
Interesting book coming from both the perspective of the divorce lawyer and a psychologist. Some good, solid advice here. While going through a divorce you should gather as much information as possible and know how to protect yourself both emotionally and financially.
