A very extensive encyclopedia on sexual disorders that categorizes and explains them all in amazing detail and with attention. Every disorder has causes, symptoms and treatment , all discussed on ample pages by specialists. A triumph of clinical practical scholarship
This volume is an excellent consultation source for difficult cases of anxiety, sexual dysfunctions, dissociation, somatoform, affective, impulse control and psiquiatric/organic disorders.Forty four authors representmany Occidental countries, thus providing useful comparisons among ways ofthinking about psychological problems and treatments chosen. Even tough allarticles are originally written for this publication, one criticism couldbe that too many authors are from the USA, implying perhaps a superiorknowledge in the field of cognitive-behavioral therapy. I interpret thisdifferently: because this therapeutic method developed and grew in the US,a great amount of studies were first started and published here. TheAmerican authors selected by the editor are proven authorities in the fieldand thus, good representatives of the cognitive-behavioral method.Theauthors who use the DSM cleaverly do so without subscribing to its purelymedical dogma and, on the contrary, stressing psychotherapy. The articlesthat mention de psychiatric DSM Holy Bible accept the fact that medicationoften clears the mind to make it possible for the individual to correct theproblem with the aid of psychotherapy. In other words, the message comesacross clearly that psychothropic medication is not the cure in most casesbut facilitates psychotherapy.By emphasizing the"cognitive-behavioral" approach,the book integrates the totalityof mental activity, including imagery. Chapters on social phobia, sexualdysfunctions, general anxiety, to mention just a few, make important use ofvisualization or what I have called "new self- hypnosis." Psychologically sound
I'm not a psychology major, so I was a little anxious when I signed up for Abnormal psych (a pre-requisite for the Nursing curriculum).My nervousness was soon allayed after reading the first few pages.Thewriting style is easy to read, with all the important terms and concepts inthe bold print that professeurs love to put on tests. Halgin and Whitbourneeven try to make it a little interesting by placing "Mini CaseStudies" throughout the chapters to display theory application. This book is based on a symposium that was inspired by the late Donald O. Hebb who, in his latter years while an Honorary Professor in the Department of Psychology at Dalhousie University, became very interested in the phenomenon of multiple personality and other dissociative states. Hebb was troubled by the lack of understanding of dissociative behavior and, through his discussions with basic science and clinical colleagues in psychology and psychiatry, he became convinced that the subject would be a figurative gold mine for psychological theory and experimentation.

The purpose of the symposium was to bring together clinical and research scientists with an interest and expertise in dissociative phenomena such as multiple personality disorder, hysteria and hypnosis.
