5-0 out of 5 stars great for the budding pre-teen psychologists
This is a perfect introductory book for an upper-elementary or middle-school student who is developing an interest in psychology.

It concentrates on self-discovery and self-awareness and consists mainly of various personality tests. Those are very well done. They are engaging and child-friendly, yet also manage to plug in concepts and relate the tests to real life, without overloading the reader with academic language or emotionally heavy material.Conceptually, it is accurate and, while simple, not at all dumbed down.

It also gives ideas for projects, essays and assignments to link the material with the rest of the curriculum. The books has a few illustrations (black-and-white cartoons).

To make it clear, you will NOT find information on theoretical and experimental psychology in this book, no name dropping and theory outlines, no experimental design or discussion of famous experiments, etc. This is not a textbook, and even as a supplementary reading will likely be too juvenile for a high-schooler.

The best way to read this book is to take a chapter or two at a time, go through it together with your kid, compare your test results and discuss anything related to the topic that comes to your mind:give more depth to the definitions, discuss problems that may arise in this or that, try and figure out how you would study that if you were an experimental psychologist, etc.

Enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for groups
My middle school groups really enjoyed doing these quizzes and learning a little more about themselves. I loved the CD that came with it, so you could have clean copies of the sheet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Fun Book
This book would be a great way to teach beginning psychology to a younger audience.I think it would be particularly cool in a summer camp or after school club.It is very easy to read, to teach and has modern pictures that the kids like.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beneficial Psychological & Educational Tool For Children
A detailed journey of various tests and puzzles for kids to explore and discover themselves. Presented in an interesting format, this resource can also be used by teachers to implement into their teaching curriculum. Excellent tool to serve as an aid for mental health clinicians as well. A must for those helping children to understand themselves.

Product Description
After many "out-of-print" years, this volume has been reissued in response to an increasing demand for copies. This reflects that the fundamental questions that motivated this book thirty years ago are still being asked. But more important, the answers -- or at least their outlines -- now seem to be in sight. In 1968, this book stood as an expression of a paradigm crisis in its critique of the state of personality psychology. The last three decades have been filled with controversy and debate about the dilemmas raised here, and then with renewal and fresh discoveries. It therefore seems especially timely to revisit the pages which posed the challenges.

Mischel outlined the need to encompass the situation in the study of personality, but with a focus on the acquired meaning of stimuli and on the situation as perceived, viewing the individual as a cognitive-affective being who construes, interprets, and transforms the stimulus in a dynamic reciprocal interaction with the social world. He focused on the idiographic analysis of personality that had originally motivated the field, and the complexity, discriminative facility, and uniqueness of the individual, and sought to connect the expressions of personality to the individual's behavior -- that is, to what people do and not just what they say. Even the intrinsically contextualized "if...then..." expressions of the personality system -- its essential behavioral signatures -- were foreshadowed in this book that fired the opening salvo in a search for "a truly dynamic personality psychology."

Product Description
Half a century after the collapse of the Nazi regime and the Third Reich, scholars from a range of fields continue to examine the causes of Nazi Germany. An increasing number of young Americans are attempting to understand the circumstances that led to the rise of the Nazi party and the subsequent Holocaust, as well as the implication such events may have for today as the world faces a resurgence of neo-Nazism, ethnic warfare, and genocide.

In the months following World War II, extensive psychiatric and psychological testing was performed on over 200 Nazis in an effort to understand the key personalities of the Third Reich and of those individuals who "just followed orders." In addressing these issues, the current volume examines the strange history of over 200 Rorschach Inkblot protocols that were administered to Nazi war criminals and answers such questions as:
* Why the long delay in publishing protocols?
* What caused such jealousies among the principals?
* How should the protocols be interpreted?
* Were the Nazis monsters or ordinary human beings?

This text delivers a definitive and comprehensive study of the psychological functioning of Nazi war criminals -- both the elite and the rank-and-file. In order to apply a fresh perspective to understanding the causes that created such antisocial behavior, these analyses lead to a discussion within the context of previous work done in social and clinical psychology. Subjects discussed include the authoritarian personality, altruism, obedience to authority, diffusion of responsibility, and moral indifference. The implications for current political events are also examined as Neo-Nazism, anti-Semitism, and ethnic hate are once again on the rise. While the book does contain some technical material relating to the psychological interpretations, it is intended to be a scholarly presentation written in a narrative style. No prior knowledge of psychological testing is necessary, but it should be of great benefit for those interested in the Rorschach Inkblot test, or with a special interest in psychological testing, personality assessment, and the history of psychology. It is also intended for readers with a broad interest in Nazi Germany.

Organized by individual theorists, this comprehensive book examines the major movements in the field through an historic and humanistic approach. Allen begins each chapter with teaser questions that help frame the chapter. The questions are answered in the body of the chapter and are later reinforced through the use of summary points and essay/critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter, which aid in the continuation of a discussion about the text. In addition, Allen provides a tabular format: a running comparison between the major theorists that allows readers to analyze new theories with respect to theories learned in previous chapters. Product Description
For decades, The Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM)—the most popular of the projective tests—has been routinely employed for personality assessment and treatment planning. But in recent years, it has not been free from controversy. Criticisms of its validity and empirical support are catalyzing new efforts to strengthen its foundations and document its broad utility. Among the most common—yet also most confusing and challenging—categories of clinical disorders is the personality disorders. However, minimal data have been available on the RIM evaluation of most of those found in DSM-IV. This welcome book constitutes the first research-grounded, comprehensive guide to the use of the RIM in assessing personality disorders. The first section offers a theoretical overview of personality disorders and constructs a framework and compelling rationale for the legitimate role of the RIM in their assessment. The second, third, and fourth sections present Cluster A disorders—paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal; Cluster B disorders—antisocial and psychopathic, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic; and Cluster C disorders—avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive. The fifth section presents passive aggressive and depressive personality disorders, currently being proposed for DSM inclusion. Each chapter in these four sections includes an extensive description of the disorder, a review of empirical studies of the use of the RIM to assess it, an analysis of the Rorschach variables that may characterize patients diagnosed with it, and a depiction of a real case and discussion of the ways in which the RIM contributed to its formulation. The sixth and final section explores the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and the RIM. Rorschach Assessment of the Personality Disorders brings practical help for clinicians and clinicians-in-training, and suggests new paths for researchers seeking to advance our understanding of the complexities of these disorders. ... Product Description
How do we come to be who we are?Why do we differ in our personalities? How do these differences matter in life? This textbook on Individual Differences and Personality aims to describe how and why personality varies between one person and the next.Unlike books that focus on individual theorists, this book focuses on current research and theory on the nature of personality and related individual differences. The book begins by discussing how personality is measured, the concept of a personality trait, and the basic dimensions of personality. This leads to a discussion of the origins of personality, with descriptions of its developmental course, its biological causes, its genetic and environmental influences, and its evolutionary function. The concept of a personality disorder is then described, followed by a discussion of the influence of personality on life outcomes in relationships, work, and health. Finally, the book examines in detail the important differences between individuals in the realms of mental abilities, of beliefs and attitudes, and of sexuality.

Intended for courses in personality and individual differences, this book may also serve as a useful overview of personality research for academics in related fields.Singly authored for consistency of breadth, depth, and presentation, Individual Differences and Personality will engage students with its interesting boxed asides.Sample boxes describe a wide variety of topics, including such issues as cross-generational differences, personality in animals, personality and occupational choice, the role of the womb environment, and many others. In addition to covering the Big Five and HEXACO models of personality structure, the book also includes topics often left out of other personality books, including individual differences in mental abilities, religion, politics, and sexuality. There is also deep coverage of the biological bases of personality, including discussions of neurotransmitters, brain structures, and hormones. The explanation of genetic and environmental influences is made clear and straightforward, and the discussion of evolutionary function is unique among personality texts.

Table of Contents:Introduction; Basic Concepts in Psychological Measurement; Personality Traits and the Inventories That Measure Them; Personality Structure:Classifying Traits; Developmental Change and Stability of Personality; Biological Bases of Personality; Genetic and Environmental Influences on Personality; The Evolutionary Function of Personality; Personality Disorders; Personality and Life Outcomes; Mental Ability; Religion and Politics; Sexuality; Conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
This is the best introduction to the scientific study of personality that I remember seeing.Although the blurb on the cover presents it as "intended for upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in personality and individual differences", it does not seem to me beyond the grasp of an intelligent fourteen-year-old.It is well organised, systematic, clear, concise, and panoramic in that it discusses the spectrum of scientific theories on its subject, and not merely the author's favourite ones.Conversely, unscientific theories are eliminated, with Freud and Adler getting merely one passing mention each.

Since Amazon's contents listing only give the barest outline, I give a fuller one below:

CHAPTER 1 -- Basic concepts in Psychological Measurement

Basic statistical ideas are discussed, such as reliability and validity, standard scores, normal distribution, correlation coefficient, self-reports, observer reports and biodata.

CHAPTER 2 -- Personality Traits and Inventories that measure them.

The nature of traits is discussed along with strategies for measuring them (empirical/factor analytic/rational).The following personality inventories are briefly described:

- CPI
- Hogan
- 16PF
- Eysenck
- Myers-Briggs
- TCI
- MPQ
- Jackson
- NPQ
- Big Five
- NEO
- HEXACO
- IPIP

The Rorschach is also discussed and its limitation described.

CHAPTER 3 -- Personality Structure: Classifying Traits

The topic of how to achieve complete description without redundancy (i.e. orthogonality of dimensions) is addressed, and a gentle introduction to factor analysis is presented. The lexical approach to finding personality factors is described, with more information of the Big Five and HEXACO inventories.

CHAPTER 3 --- Developmental Change and Stability of Personality

Here we have a good summary of available data on how personality characteristics change through the lifespan.

Chapter 4 -- Biological bases of Personality

Early ideas, the Four Humours, Physique and Personality, Cloninger's theory, Gray's theory, Eysenck's theory, comparison of Gray & Eysenck and the relevant empirical evidence, Zuckerman's model, effect of various hormones.

CHAPTER 5 -- Genetic and Environmental Influences on Personality

I was glad to see that this section stuck carefully to the science and didn't succumb to political correctness, going carefully through the consequences of twin and adoptive studies, distinguishing between additive and nonadditive heredity and so forth.Assortative mating and birth order are also touched on.

CHAPTER 7 -- The Evolutionary Function of Personality

Under the rubric of Why We Are Not All the Same, here we have material effectively taken from Evolutionary Biology: the concept of evolution by natural selection, fluctuating optimum and frequency dependence, adaptive trade-offs, and some examples. There are also notes on cross-generational and cross-national personality differences, and animal personality.

CHAPTER 8 -- Personality Disorders

The idea of a personality disorder, and various kinds:

- The DSM-IV Disorders (schizoid, schizotypal, paranoid, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic*, avoidant, dependent & obsessive-compulsive)
- DSM-IV clusters
- Disorders not included in the DSM-IV (depressive, passive aggressive, self-defeating, sadistic, ADHD, separation anxiety, oppositional defiant, phobias)
- Problems with the concept of personality disorders
- Alternative systems of diagnosis
- Origins & biological bases

*including a brief note explaining for the uninformed who Narcissus was!

CHAPTER 9 -- Personality and Life Outcomes

- Relationships and Marriage (are spouses similar, satisfaction, attachment styles, parenting styles)
- Peer relationships: friendship and status
- Health-related outcomes (substance use, longevity, heart disease
- Academic performance)
- Job performance
- Criminality (self- control, psychopathy)
- Life satisfaction

CHAPTER 10 -- Mental Ability

- The structure of mental ability (one dimension or many?)
- Developmental change and stability in mental abilities
- Biological bases of mental ability
- Genetic and environmental influences
- Mental ability and life outcomes
- Not all g-loaded tasks are the same (fluid & crystallised intelligence, Flynn effect, numerical v. verbal reasoning)
- Alternative ideas about mental abilities (Gardner, Sternberg, Goleman etc.)
- Emotional intelligence

I was most impressed by the way this section sorted out the wheat from the flood of chaff this subject has generated in recent years.Particularly clear are the sections on the oft-misunderstood complementarity of the contributions of Spearman and Thurstone

CHAPER 11 -- Religion and Politics

- Is religion a personality characteristic
- Religiosity and the major dimensions of personality
- Developmental change and stability in religiosity
- Religiosity and paranormal beliefs
- Religiosity and life outcomes

- Right-wing authoritarianism
- Social dominance orientation
- Relations between authoritarianism & dominance orientation
- Two dimensions of political attitudes
- Political attitudes and the major dimensions of personality
- Political attitudes, social values and religion
- Developmental change and stability in political attitudes

- Origins of religious beliefs and political attitudes (biological bases, genetic & environmental influences, evolutionary functions)

CHAPTER 12 -- Sexuality

- Major dimensions of sexuality
- Sexuality & Personality (arousal, commitment & orientation)
- Origins of variation (genetic & environmental influences, biological bases, & evolution)
- Sexual orientation
- Sexual arousal

FINAL CHAPTER -- Conclusions

- What we have learned so far
- What we have yet to learn
- Final Remarks

SUMMARY

The above outline of course only gives a taste of the diverse information included in this book.I feel that it does a remarkable job of accurately compressing so much information and providing a springboard for further reading, while maintaining readability (although perhaps the references could havebeen a little more comprehensive), and I thoroughly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
It is good enough to spend the time with this book. It give a details and information that need to we know and understand for personality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging; a joy to teach from
This engaging state-of-the-art undergraduate textbook is especially recommended because of its strong research orientation and its high accessibility for students, a combination rarely achieved. Consistency and integration are its strong points, due largely to a single author providing a relaxed (reader friendly) evolutionary approach for each of the 12 chapters along with an eclectic trait theory (most often the "Big Five," but including many others).

The author begins with an easily understood discussion of how personality is measured through the use of self-reports and observer ratings, along with an introduction to the normal distribution, correlations, reliability, and validity. (In class, these elements could be brought alive using a practical self-report inventory.) Next, he describes the main personality traits and questionnaires and the basic dimensions that underlie them. This is followed by a discussion of how personality develops over time, including change and stability, which leads to a discussion of the origins of traits and their biological, genetic, and environmental causes.

There are a number of excellent chapters. One describes the personality disorders and the DSM-IV. Another demonstrates how personality determines life outcomes including peer relationships, marital satisfaction, health, academic and job performance, criminality, and overall life-satisfaction. Chapter 10 describes mental ability including not only general intelligence (g), and its relation to brain size and the Flynn Effect, but also alternative perspectives such as emotional intelligence. Chapter 11 contains an outstanding account of individual differences in religious and political orientation, particularly the genetic and environmental influences on right-wing authoritarianism. Finally, Chapter 12 discusses human sexuality and includes healthy doses of genetic and biological influences and evolutionary theory. Each chapter contains a box or two with asides or practical tasks, such as one on widely used personality inventories, another on whether there are specific genes for personality, and yet another on whether other species also exhibit traits comparable to humans. This textbook would be a joy to teach from and is suitable for both first-time and more advanced students.

Product Description

The study of the relationship between the person and the situation has had a long history in psychology. Many theories of personality are set on an interpersonal stage and many social phenomena are played out differently as the cast of characters change. At times the study of persons and situations has been contentious, however, recent interest in process models of personality and social interaction have focused on the ways people navigate, influence, and are influenced by their social worlds.

Personality and Social Behavior contains a series of essays on topics where a transactional analysis of the person and situation has proved most fruitful. Contributions span the personality and social psychology spectrum and include such topics as new units in personality; neuroscience perspectives on interpersonal personality; social and interpersonal frameworks for understanding the self and self-esteem; and personality process analyses of romantic relationships, prejudice, health, and leadership.

This volume provides essential reading for researchers with an interest in this core topic in social psychology and may also be used as a text on related upper-level courses.
