Product Description
Schizophrenic patients have bizarre experiences which reflect a disorder in the contents of consciousness. For example, patients hear voices talking about them or they are convinced that alien forces are controlling their actions. Their abnormal behaviour includes incoherence and lack of will. In this book an explanation of these baffling signs and symptoms is provided using the framework of cognitive neuropsychology. The cognitive abnormalities that underlie these signs and symptoms suggest impairment in a system which constructs and monitors representations of certain abstract (especially mental) events in consciousness. For example, schizophrenic patients can no longer construct representations of their intentions to act. Thus, if actions occur, these will be experienced as coming out of the blue and hence can seem alien. The patient who lacks awareness of his own intentions will stop acting spontaneously and hence will show a lack of will. The psychological processes that are abnormal in schizophrenia can be related to underlying brain systems using evidence from human and animal neuropsychology. Interactions between prefrontal cortex and other parts of the brain, especially temporal cortex appear critical for constructing the contents of consciousness. It is these interactions that are likely to be impaired in schizophrenia. ... Read more

Product Description

Two related fields, the psychological and neuropsychological ones, provide an exhaustive overview of the complex issue of agency and self-agency. The cognitive and neuropsychological correlates are here considered  as two sides of the same coin, since we have the main scope to find a correspondence between the hardware (cerebral processes) and the software (cognitive processes) of the representation of agency.

All living system self-regulates, or, within any living system, there is a need of communication among the different parts of that system. This can include a unit as small as a cell, a plant, or animal, or even a more complex organism. For example, one's systems are regulating one's temperature: regulation is a property of the living system. Secondly, in order to act it is necessary for organisms to be able to distinguish between self and other, whatever this ability is learned or is a part of the process of action. The predominant account on explaining the sense of agency of our  actions is the ‘‘central monitoring theory" or ‘‘comparator model" that postulate a monitoring of central and peripheral signals arising as a consequence of the action execution . Moreover, the simulation theory is considered in alternative to the comparator perspective. Secondly, the contribution of body representation for agency is explored, taking into account the significance of proprioceptive feedback for self-agent attribution. Finally, the neural correlates of action and agent representation are considered in the light of new empirical results.

Product Description
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in sports has become an important international public health issue over the past two decades. However, until recently, return to play decisions following a sports-related traumatic brain injury have been based on anecdotal evidence and have not been based on scientifically validated clinical protocols. Over the past decade, the field of Neuropsychology has become an increasingly important component of the return to play decision making process following TBI. Neuropsychological assessment instruments are increasingly being adapted for use with athletes throughout the world and the field of sports neuropsychology appears to be a rapidly evolving subspecialty.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the application of neuropsychological assessment instruments in sports, and it is structured to present a global perspective on contemporary research. In addition to a review of current research, Traumatic Brain Injury in Sports: An International Neuropsychological Perspective, presents a thorough review of current clinical models that are being implemented internationally within American and Australian rules football, soccer, boxing, ice hockey, rugby and equestrian sports. ... Product Description

This volume is the first comprehensive resource to assist neuropsychologists to provide culturally competent services to Asian Americans. It highlights pertinent historical socio-cultural characteristics of the largest Asian American ethnic groups, which helps to conceptualize presentation, provide an optimal environment for test administration, interpret tests within a cultural context, and offer culturally sensitive feedback and recommendations. In addition, the volume gives a summary of the available neuropsychological literature for each Asian American ethnic group, recommendations for testing, and illustrative case samples.

The second purpose of the volume is to provide a glimpse of how neuropsychology is currently practiced in different Asian countries, by reviewing the neuropsychological literature and by listing the available resources. This information gives valuable insights to neuropsychologists working with Asian communities throughout the world.

Neuropsychology of Asian Americans is an essential resource for clinical neuropsychologists and school psychologists who perform neuropsychological services to Asians. It is also an important resource for academic neuropsychologists and students with Asians in their sample, as cultural variables may have moderating effects on data that information in this book helps to elucidate.

Product Description
As a neuropsychologist, Tim Shallice considers the general question of what can be learned about the operation of the normal cognitive system--including perception, memory, and language--from the study of the cognitive difficulties arising from neurological damage and disease. He distinguishes two type of theories of normal function--primarily modular and primarily non-modular--and argues that the problems of making valid inferences about normal function from studies of brain-damaged subjects are more severe in the latter. He first analyzes five areas in which modularity can be assumed. He then examines these inferences, from group studies, from individual case studies, and from group studies, and from non-modular systems, more theoretically. Finally he considers five areas where theories of normal function are relatively undeveloped and neuropsychologists provide counter-intuitive phenomena and guides to theory-building. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the final volume in a three-volume work that has addressed the scientific methodologies relevant to clinical neurobehavioral toxicology. Volume I focused on basic concepts and methodologies in Neurobehavioral Toxicology, with Volume II focusing on the peripheral nervous system. Volume III attends to what is known about industrial and environmental chemicals, medicines, and substances of abuse and how these agents affect the central nervous system. All substances have the capacity to be toxic, depending on factors that include the physical properties of the chemical or compound, organism related variables, or interaction between the two. These substances on the other hand and as a result of these same factors might be used therapeutically or even recreationally. The difference between medicine, recreational drug, or poison depends often on a careful balance between adverse and intended effects. How to determine that a specified substance has caused harm is emphasized in the present volume by way of case examples and discussion. Illnesses and behavioral variations that compete with toxicant-induced explanations for findings in a given case, as well as the various controversies that can arise around issues of diagnosis and causal determination, are treated comprehensively in this volume.

1-0 out of 5 stars Laughable
Quack Gregory Lamberty outlines somatization disorders and "medically unexplained" symptoms. The only problem is that they are medically explained. For example there are approximately 4,000 articles in peer reviewed medical journals showing frank physical pathology (disease) in ME (aka CFS).The same can be said for fibromyalgia and IBS.
If you doubt ME is a somatic illness read the fascinating Osler's Web: Inside the Labyrinth of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Epidemic

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying it to School Practice
I'm a speech pathologist who works with teens with Asperger's Syndrome in a public school. We see a lot of somaticization in our students, and it is often used as a way to escape less preferred activities.I and the other teachers need to know how to view this condition and how to set limits around the behaviors we see, *without* causing harm or ignoring what could be a serious condition.Lamberty's book helps us with that.He explains how somaticization is defined and how it manifests itself. He gives an excellent explanation of the kinds of treatment that have been shown to work. This is particularly helpful, because it teaches us the "active ingredients" in any successful therapy. That means we can incorporate those active ingredients in our own relationships with our students. Finally, Lamberty's books contains short clinical vignettes about actual patients, which is very instructive because it shows how to set appropriate limits. ...
