Product Description
Schizophrenia is being increasingly viewed as a neurological disorder. The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia addresses the key questions in modern schizophrenia research. How do abnormalities of the brain produce the characteristic signs and symptoms of this most severe and mysterious mental malady? Where are these abnormalities? How do they develop? How can we detect them? What clinical and cognitive effects do they have?
This new book is the first of its kind to tackle these questions in a systematic way from a number of allied perspectives: from phenomenology to physiology, animal behaviour to metacognition and from PET scans to paper and pencil tests. A number of authors from the United Kingdom and the United States have made contributions; all are acknowledged experts in the field. The chapters each contain a concise review of the particular topic, empirical data and also a theoretical overview.
The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia will be required reading for all serious students of schizophrenia from both medical and psychology backgrounds. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume is designed to be a practical guide for the clinician using neuropsychological tests in the assessment of elderly patients. It presents concise overviews of the major neuropsychiatric syndromes affecting the elderly, the use of brain imaging in differential diagnosis, interpretation of test results, and how to generate useful treatment recommendations.

The first chapter reviews proper selection of neuropsychological tests and the major issues to be considered when assessing the elderly - these include (but are not limited to) poor sensory functioning (hearing and vision), lack of adequate normative data in older age groups, particularly those over 85, and the effects of multiple medical problems and multiple medications on test performance. The effects of educational, ethnic, and cultural factors on test performance are also reviewed. The second chapter reviews the DSM-IV diagnoses of cognitive disorders (dementia, delirium, amnesic disorders, and cognitive disorders) and the limitation of each. This chapter also reviews commonly used research diagnoses including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), their diagnostic criteria, and limitations.

Each subsequent chapter is devoted to one disorder that affects cognition (e.g. Alzheimer's Disease) and all follow the same format: A first section reviews the disorder in terms of epidemiology, presenting symptoms, typical course, neuropathology (if known), and the presentation of brain imaging, including CT, MRI, and functional imaging (PET, SPECT). A second section is in case presentation format and reviews one or two prototypical and atypical cases. It includes history, brain imaging, test data with raw scores and percentiles, and interpretation. Case management and treatment recommendations based on history and test data are presented. Limitations of the test battery and difficulties in interpretation due to ethnic, cultural, and limited education are discussed. ... Read more

Neuropsychology provides an overview of the fascinating clinical evidence that gave rise to the field of human neuropsychology and reviews the latest experimental evidence.  Unlike most neuropsychology textbooks that discuss intact functional systems (such as the visual system) separately from discussions of what happens when the system is damaged, this text integrates the material, making it easier from which to teach, and much more engaging from which to learn.

Product Description
Alcohol abuse is a major health problem in most parts of the world. This book focuses on the way in which alcohol affects the brain, with the aim of describing advances in the neuropsychology of alcoholism in a way that makes this work accessible to clinicians from a variety of backgrounds who treat people with alcohol-related problems.; The book is divided into four parts. Part One provides an introduction to the medical and neurological conditions that can result from alcoholism, and to the process of neuropsychological assessment. The problems involved in conducting research in this area are also considered. In Part Two, research that focuses directly on changes to the nervous system is surveyed. This includes studies of both the short-term and the chronic neurological changes in the brain caused by alcohol. In Part Three, studies of the neuropsychological effects of acute intoxication, social drinking and alcohol abuse are described. Finally, in Part Four, the implications of neuropsychological research for the assessment and management of patients with alcohol problems are considered.
The objective of this book is to collate the range of research work that is relevant to understanding how alcohol affects the brain. This includes both the acute and the chronic effects, at both the biological and physiological levels. ... Read more

I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Florida and used this book, along with Larrabee's Forensic Neuropsychology book, to study for my qualifying examination, which included forensic neuropsychology as a core topic. The book includes many interesting chapters, and is quite easy to understand. If you are an experienced forensic neuropsychologist, or just a student looking to learn more on the topic, this book, coupled with Larrabee's, makes a great starter set.Melton's Psychological Evaluations for the Courts is also an excellent addition, though the material is a little heavier, so be prepared. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical neuropsych dictionary
As a neurologist in training, I found this small book to be quite useful for defining all those terms used in behavioral neurology that seem intimidating. It covers descriptive signs and syndromes as well.A great way to expand your professional neuropsychological vocabulary, if you wish to study it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Reference
Clinical neuropsychology is in the position of being a very modern neuroscience whose nosology stretches well back into the 19th century. Contributions to the current lexicon not only include 150 years of coiningterms and identifying syndromes, but also the modern world of functionalneuroimaging, weekly changes in psychopharmacology, wet lab neurosciencefinding application in the clinic, and the development of new tests and newconstructs. With such diversity of science and scientific terms, it is withrelief that this book has finally gotten to press. It should be as usefulto students and academics as well as clinicians. Actually, neurologists andpsychiatrists should also be intrested. Nearly every obscure diagnosis isincluded, some with remarks about the scientific proof that the disorderexists added. It is not a DSM-IV for neuropsychology, butit does notpretend to be. An added thought, if you read only 2 pages per day you willbe done in 90 days. ... Read more

Product Description
This book brings together theoretical and clinical aspects of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. Following an introductory chapter and a brief history of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, there are chapters on specific cognitive deficits (attention, executive deficits, memory, and language). The next section addresses rehabilitation of emotional, social and behavioural disorders. Then comes a section on specific groups of people (children, people with dementia and people in reduced states of awareness. Although the main focus of the book is on adults with non-progressive brain injury, these other groups are included as NR is being increasingly employed with them. The book concludes with a chapter on systems of service delivery and another on the future of NR. Thus this book covers a number of aspects of NR and is broader in outlook than most existing books in this area. It presents current practice techniques in cognitive rehabilitation from a conceptual and theoretical perspective. It offers both clinicians and researchers a sense of the research and theory underlying current clinical applications.
The main audience will be clinical neuropsychologists especially those working in rehabilitation. Other audiences include clinical psychologists working with people who have mental health problems, schizophrenia or are elderly; occupational therapists; speech and language therapists and rehabilitation doctors. It is likely that some social workers, nurses psychiatrists and neurologists will also want to read the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Includes a new glossary from Oliver Turnbull

In this examination of the conjunction of neuroscience and psychoanalysis, Mark Solms, one of the most influential experts in this field, introduces a combination of the methods of psychoanalysis and neuroscience. Based on four series of theoretical lectures and clinical presentations delivered at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, this invaluable work comprises a thorough examination of this union, from a comprehensive history of the origins of psychoanalysis in neuro-science to a contemplation of its future. Solms penetratingly explicates the connection between aphasia and neuroses, a topic that so engaged Freud. From the neurodynamics of dreaming to fascinating clinical studies of patients living with a 'perforated consciousness,' Solms illuminates the mystery of mind-body connectivity.

The Drs Solms are well qualified for this task. Mark Solms is a member of the British Neuropsychological Society and the British Psycho-Analytical Society (and an Hon. Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society). He regularly publishes scientific and scholarly work in both neuropsychology and psychoanalysis. Karen Kaplan-Solms is a speech pathologist and a neuropsychologist. She is a member of the British Neuropsychological Society and a candidate of the British Psycho-Analytical Society. She, too, has published in both neuropsychological and psychoanalytic journals.

"Freud, in his 1895 'Project for a Scientific Psychology', attempted to join the emerging discipline of psychoanalysis with the neuroscience of his time. But that was a hundred years ago, when the neuron had only just been described, and Freud was forced - through lack of pertinent knowledge - to abandon his project. We have had to wait many decades before the sort of data which Freud needed finally became available. Now, these many years later, contemporary neuroscience allows for the resumption of the search for correlations between these two disciplines. The Drs Solms are uniquely qualified for his task, having trained in both psychoanalysis and the neurosciences, and the work described in this volume ushers in a new era for our field." - Arnold Z. Pfeffer, from his Foreword ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In Depth Analysis into the new field of Neuro-Psychoanalysis and provides a research direction for those in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Freud's Legacy
Freud couldn't have asked for a finer compliment than to have neuropsychologists using his work to advance the study of brain injury and disorder in the neural scientific realm of our time. For those not familiar with Freud or his 1895 "Project for a Scientific Psychology," this book proves an interesting introduction, as it was mine. I decided, after reading it, to look further into Freud's work and his life. Truly, as it turned out, he was a fascinating character and there was a very valuable application of brain/mind science at every turn. A bit of knowledge of neuronanatomy comes in handy with this volume, but is not entirely necessary. If you long for an enjoyable challenge, then this book will readily supply it. ... Read more

These papers emphasize the development of detailed models of normal cognitive functioning through the analysis of cognitive impairment. They differ, however, in terms of the cognitive domain investigated and the dominant methodology of the reported research. Areas examined include imagery, attention, memory, and language. A substantial portion of the papers presented address language processing because research on language disorders has been a major focus of interest in cognitive neuropsychological research.

Product Description

Introducing Neuropsychology, Second Edition investigates the functions of the brain and explores the relationships between brain systems and human behaviour. The material is presented in a jargon-free, easy to understand manner and aims to guide students new to the field through current areas of research.

Following a brief history of the discipline and a description of methods in neuropsychology, the remaining chapters review traditional and recent research findings. Both cognitive and clinical aspects of neuropsychology are addressed to illustrate the advances scientists are making (on many fronts) in their quest to understand brain - behaviour relationships in both normal and disturbed functioning. The rapid developments in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience resulting from traditional research methods as well as new brain-imaging techniques are presented in a clear and straightforward way. Each chapter has been fully revised and updated and new brain-imaging data are incorporated throughout, especially in the later chapters on Emotion and Motivation, and Executive Functions. As in the first edition, key topics are dealt with in separate focus boxes, and “interim comment” sections allow the reader a chance to “take stock” at regular intervals.

The book assumes no particular expertise on the reader’s part in either psychology or brain physiology. Thus, it will be of great interest not only to those studying neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, but also to medical and nursing students, and indeed anyone who is interested in learning about recent progress in understanding brain–behaviour relationships.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Text
R. E. Tartar, M. Butters, and S. R. Beers (Eds.), Medical Neuropsychology (2nd ed.), Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, New York, 2001

A lecturer in neurology once stated, "The human body is nothing more than a case for the human brain; it is made up of organs that are designed to protect and nurture it." This statement, though perhaps skewed, underscores a marvelous aspect of the human organism.

Medical Neuropsychology is an outstanding text that brings home the point that the brain is exquisitely dependent on other less glamorous natomical structures and their interactions. Behind every well-functioning brain is a healthy body.

This edited volume introduces the reader to a wealth of information concerning the relation between nonneurological medical disease and cognitive/emotional functioning. This text is unlike the many volumes devoted to specific neurobehavioral functions, neuropsychological
syndromes, assessment techniques and test measures, or neuroanatomic substrates of behavior.

The focus here is on the relation between body and brain, and between organ/system pathology and neuropsychological functioning. A total of 29 authors contribute their expertise to this 346-page volume in areas that encompass neuroendocrinology, pulmonary disorders, cardiovascular
disease, liver disease, renal dysfunction and its treatment, pancreatic disorders, thyroid disorders, gonadal steroid abnormalities, toxic chemical exposure, systemic autoimmune disease, sleep disorders, and HIV
infection. The 13 chapters are well written and neatly organized. In most cases, organ anatomy, physiology, and function are initially reviewed, followed by a thorough review of related diseases. The focus on pathology
and its physiological relation to brain function is then followed by a literature review of the cognitive and emotional correlates of these diseases. The literary flow is easily digestible.

This book achieves the editors' stated goal of providing a compendium of the empirical literature documenting the neuropsychological sequelae of organ and system pathology. Although several chapters are less than comprehensive in addressing the relevant neuropsychological literature, this book would be invaluable to any neuropsychologist, particularly anyone working in a general medical setting.

A challenge for all neuropsychologists, regardless of clinical setting, is to develop a better understanding of processes that occur outside the realm of the central nervous system and yet are vital to and constantly interactive with the operations of the brain. This volume will facilitate this understanding and guide the clinician in assessing and treating individuals whose cognitive and emotional functioning are subjected to the potentially adverse affects of common medical disorders.

Medical Neuropsychology is a solid reference text worthy of a four-star rating. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars child neuropsych
I really did not feel that this book provided anything new. It looks like that information in it are things I have gotten from previous text books. i did not find this a useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Neuropsychology Assessment and Interventions for Neurodevelopmental Disorders
This book was recommended at a conference I recently attended. Dr.'s Ellison and Semrud-Clikeman provide a brief anatamony lesson and up-to-date methods for neuroimaging. They include major neuro developmental disorders and intervention strategies that are helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Neuropsychological Bias
The author presents a very biased view of child neuropsychology.
She omits many relevant research findings especially in the area
of neurometrics and presents a very narrow scientific base focusing
on only a few relevant researchers. There are also many errors
with regard to factual information and little cohesiveness in
bringing together research findings. Some of the real pioneers
in neuropsychological research have been omitted.

2-0 out of 5 stars Typos and some inaccuracies
The book has more typos than any text I've ever purchased and includes some important inaccuracies (e.g., Prozac is referred to as an MAOI). Despite these things, the book provides some good general information, but the reader certainly gets the sense that the book was hurriedly thrown together without a good proofread, first.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very in-depth
This book was a nice overview of pediatric neuropsychology, but I found it quite shallow in terms of practical information. I found myself thinking "yeah, I know all that, now get to the meat."

A nice start for the beginner, but don't buy this thinking that you will get details of how to actually do pediatric neuropsychology. ... Read more
