Winning The Mind Game
By John Edgette and Tim Rowan
Crown House Publishing Limited, Published September 2003

There is no doubt about the fact that during the past decade, hypnotherapy has certainly gained momentum and acceptance and has earned its place in the health care of many people.Techniques are used in a wide variety of problems many of them emotional and medical, but not exclusively so.Hypnosis is a valuable tool that can be used quickly and effectively to create influencing strategies in the subconscious mind to create lasting change within the patient. This can be to reduce anxiety or fight phobias.More and more it is also found to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of sportsmen. It can promote lasting changes within the athlete.

This exciting book contains a wide range of interventions that can be used by the therapist with sportsmen as individuals or as teams to enhance performance, etc.It includes: a clear step-by-step guide for working with sportsmen; a guide to using hypnosis with groups and teams; transcripts of proven successful interventions; detailed case studies; and details on how to promote this side of your business. It is a book ideal for anyone who works with sportsmen and teams with professionally or as a hobby. It also is an excellent guide to anyone who is already in the business of hypnotherapy to expand business into what is more commonly called these days, sports psychology.

This book leaves no stones unturned, no questions unanswered. It has been carefully written by its co-authors and is an immensely readable piece of literature. So much sport, in fact so much of life, is almost entirely dependent upon the way that we think so this book is that guide we have been looking for to help people "win the mind game".The book is easy-to-use and comprehensive and gives excellent step-by-step guidance for its development.I can think of a few football and cricket teams which could do with help at the moment. How about your local ??Well----it may be worth considering!!Highly recommended!! And I am only an armchair sportsman but I can see great potential for its use here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Winning the Mind Game
This book is directed towards the ones that coach athletes with the aim to improve performance, and deals with how one in a systematic way can use hypnosis for this purpose. The authors claim that the method they describe can be very successful but that there is a multitude of other ways that works at least as good. This humble attitude is kept throughout the book and contributes to a very pleasant reading atmosphere. The reader gets many interesting perspectives on sport psychology and many case stories can provide a source of inspiration for the coach or psychologist.A strength and weakness with this book is that it is very clear and detailed, sometimes too clear and detailed and even extracted, which perhaps makes the book more suitable for beginners in sports psychology.

Mark:4 (i.e. very much worth reading).

Reviewed by Trevor Silvester - The Hypnotherapy Journal Autumn 2003

There is a growing level of interest amongst athletes in the use of Hypnosis for performance enhancement. Having a performance coach is now an everyday experience for tennis players, golfers and athletes. In a world where success and failure (and millions of pounds) can be measured in slivers of a second, or millimetres of accuracy, anything that can bring an edge - legally - is worth investigating.

This book delivers a step-by-step guide for those interested in working with sports people. Their approach is based on a four step model which allows those new to this field to be clear about what to achieve and how to achieve it. They support this framework with clear case studies, transcripts of particular interventions, and interesting anecdotes.

I found their in-depth exploration of the use of particular trance phenomena in focusing the client on positive outcomes to be especially good. The authors are very much at the 'new hypnosis' end of the profession, not attributing the efficacy of a technique to the trance depth of the client, so the chapter on Alert Hypnosis explains the uses of, and how to achieve, an eyes-open trance state, as well as talking and walking while in hypnosis.

While the book is aimed at sports psychology it has relevance to any field where performance is an issue, and as such is a welcome addition to my bookshelf.

Description:
Background: Understanding and influencing the determinants of physical activity is an important public health challenge. We used prospective data to examine the influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on physical activity behaviour, using regular running as the behavioural model. Methods: Over 500 middle-aged women completed two consecutive questionnaires in 2000 and 2002. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine factors predicting adoption of and regression from regular leisure-time running during the follow-up. Results: Women who frequently used behavioural change skills were more likely to adopt regular running (OR=4.0, CI=1.7-9.5). There was an interaction between the enjoyment of running and family support: those who rated enjoyment of running high and reported high family support were less likely to adopt running (OR=0.2, CI=0.1-0.5). Women who reported infrequent use of motives were more likely (OR=3.3, CI=1.6-6.9) to regress from regular running. There was an interaction between perceived health and the neighbourhood environment: those who perceived themselves to be in poor health and had an unattractive neighbourhood were more likely (OR=2.7, CI=0.9-8.3) to regress from regular running. Conclusions: Behavioural skills and enjoyment may be of particular importance for the adoption of regular activity; social support and an aesthetically attractive neighbourhood are likely to have a key role in encouraging maintenance. ... Description:
Objectives: The main purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between exercise participation and three components of mental well-being (physical self, work-related, and global) in a sample of corporate employees. As a subsidiary and exploratory question, we also examined whether these well-being components are more strongly related to structured exercise participation scores compared to total levels of physical activity. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Method: The participants were 312 employees from an information technology company (n=204 males and n=108 females). Structural equation modelling was used to examine links between exercise participation and the three well-being components within a hierarchical framework, featuring global well-being constructs at the apex and specific elements of well-being at lower levels. Results: Support was found for the a priori model in that there were direct paths from exercise to physical self and enthusiasm at work. Furthermore, there were indirect paths between exercise and global well-being components through measures of the physical self and enthusiasm at work. The results of an alternative model using physical activity as opposed to exercise were generally similar. Conclusion: The support found for the exercise and well-being model indicates that exercise is associated directly and indirectly with high well-being in various facets of employees' lives. Thus, this study extends previous research that has examined associations between exercise and isolated indicators of employee well-being. Finally, the results pertaining to physical activity suggest that workplace exercise promotion programmes should incorporate and promote lifestyle physical activity. ... Read more

Description:
Objectives: To examine the antidepressant effects of exercise, and two previously proposed psychological mechanisms for this effect: self-efficacy and distraction. Method: A quasi-experimental design was utilized with participants (N=19) self-selecting to either a control or a 9-week exercise group. Dependent variables included severity of depression, coping self-efficacy, rumination, and distraction and were measured at study entry, 3 and 9 weeks later. Results: Exercisers reported lower depression scores than controls at Week 3 [9.3 (4.8) vs. 24.7 (12.0), p<0.05] and Week 9 [6.4 (5.4) vs. 21.8 (16.4), p<0.05]. Coping self-efficacy was higher among exercisers than controls at Week 3 [7.3 (0.9) vs. 5.2 (1.3), p<0.05] and Week 9 [7.5 (0.9) vs. 5.3 (1.8), p<0.05]. Exercisers ruminated less than controls at Week 3 [38.9 (1.8) vs. 46.5 (8.2), p<0.05] and at Week 9 [33.9 (1.2) vs. 44.0 (10.9), p<0.05]. Distraction was higher for exercisers at Week 3 [28.6 (1.2) vs. 23.6 (3.0), p<0.05] but not at Week 9 [27.7 (2.1) vs. 23.7 (5.3), p>0.05]. Partial correlations, controlling for baseline values of the independent variables, were conducted and a significant negative relationship between coping self-efficacy and depression was found at both Weeks 3 and 9. Conclusions: Exercise was associated with a reduction in the symptoms of depression. Support was found for coping self-efficacy as a potential mechanism; however, there was limited support for distraction as a potential mechanism. ... Read more

Description:
Objectives: Little is known about what adults are thinking about and doing for health-promoting physical activity (PA). We examined the PA levels of middle-aged (40-55 years) and older men and women (56+) as well as their intentions for future activity. Methods: Random telephone surveys stratified for age, gender and geographic location assessed the weekly PA and plans for exercise among 40 adults. Results: Numerical data showed that activity patterns were age-determined and gender-patterned with adults aged 40-55 expending far more energy at both work and leisure-time PA than adults aged 56+. Self-talk strategies occurred among 88% of the respondents but a key strategy used by active people was to ignore activity self-talk and 'just do it' lest they talk themselves out of exercising. Conclusions: Inactive people already know that keeping active is important to their health and still do not participate. The group to target with positive triggering messages, assistance in getting started and reminders are those who already want to be more active but have not got a regular pattern established. Future research is needed to explore the impact of various kinds of social cueing. Messages such as, ''Just do it'' or ''Don't think about it'' may be all that is needed to trigger adults who are already seriously contemplating how to increase their PA. ... Read more

Product Description
Sport may teach people how to win gracefully; but it may also teach them how to win at any cost, even if this involves violence or cheating. In order to understand the complex relationships between modern sport and other aspects of society, it is necessary to strip away our preconceptions of how sport ought to operate and to examine, in as detached a manner as possible, the way in which sport actually operates. For the first time, a sociological perspective is brought to bear on a topic which has received much previous attention, largely from a medical or physiological perspective. Particular issues examined include: * Sport, health and public policy * Child abuse and sex abuse in sport * Conflicts in the role of club medical staff in professional football * Doping in sport * Sports medicine and the development of performance enhancing drugs * Case study of cycling and the 1998 Tour de France. Sport, Health and Drugs is a valuable and unique addition to the existing literature. Interview transcripts, case studies and press cuttings are used to ground theory in reality. Students and lecturers alike will find this an immensely readable and challenging resource. ... Read more

Description

"Excelling in international distance running is not an easy caper. Who is willing to put in the hours of everyday training? Who wants to physically exhaust themselves at regular intervals? Who finds satisfaction in testing their mental strength, while pushing through the pain barrier? Who is willing to commit their entire everyday life to being the best they can be?

Abdelkader Kada has coached athletes of exceptional ability who answered 'yes' to these questions. The stories of Moroccans Hicham El Guerrouj, Salah Hissou and Ali Ezzine are ones of great success. Success that was achieved through dedication, belief and natural talent.

Inspired by their coach and the earlier deeds of Said Aouita, read on as Hicham, Salah and Ali do their best to defeat some of the greatest long distance runners the world has seen.

About the Author

He has been a semi serious distance runner for seventeen years, participating in many fun runs over ten kilometres and various other distances. His passion and knowledge of Athletics have amassed over the years to a point where he has instant recall of many athletes and their individual performances including placings, personal bests etc.

Much of what you read in this book is based on Greg's own personal knowledge. To add credibility and further enhance this publication, he spent five months in Morocco where he researched and interviewed one of the athletes mentioned.

Greg is twenty-seven years old and resides in Hastings, Victoria. This is his first book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic info on muscle recovery, but don't rely on as a sole source of information
I think there's some useful information in this book if you're interested in taking performance up a notch, but you have to take it with a grain of salt.As other reviewers have stated he does go on and on about his patented R4 system, but even if you're totally sold on it by the end of the book it's not like there's an R4 exercise recovery drink sitting next to the Gatorade on the supermarket shelves.

So ignore the R4 fluff, and focus in on what he has to say about muscle recovery in a general sense. The author presents some useful information on muscle recovery, and how your body needs an appropriate mix of carbs, electrolytes, and protein to properly recover from bouts of exercise. He also discusses other forms of helping muscles recover, such as massage therapy, but not in enough detail to be worthwhile.

His main focus in on endurance exercise, so don't expect to find a ton of information if you're doing weight training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recovery is Key to Athletic Performance
While it's true that parts of this book read like a commercial for the R4 System of recovery, there is plenty of material that will help an athlete learn how his or her body can recover more quickly between workouts. You can experiment with the recovery ideas presented by Burke and find which work for you and discard the ones that do not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book...
The author goes on and on about the R4 recovery system, which is patented, of course you will find R4 attached to the name of an athletic recovery drink.

I bought this book, but wish I hadn't.It's a very long (and expensive) brochure for a product that I am certain the author has some sort of financial interest in.

Nothing too useful in here, nothing brilliant at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like advertising to me.
Maybe this book is accurate. Maybe.

I cannot find any other research studies on this topic, expect thru the "Endurox".

The author seems to think the only way to deliver his claims is thru a "sport drink" ... which he repeated so many times as to put a red flag up for me.

I did some research on the web, and found that the author has licensed the "R4" formula to the makers of the powered "Endurox". Of course, if it is in print, it must be true, right? =)

In any case, I would like to see results of a study not associated with the author or the powdered drink maker.

I am just a bit skeptical, but if it works, this may be a great thing for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of the recovery process!
Have you ever finished an exercise that you didn't think was too hard and awoke the next day to find yourself sore?Have you ever had a really hard workout and planned for at least one day of being sore only to find yourself ready to go the next day?If you want probable answers to these questions, read this book.Burke offers a great explanation of what happens to your muscles during the stress and recovery phases of exercise, and offers great advice on how recover with the most efficiency. If you're interested in finding out more about the science of recovery, this is a must read. ... From the supplier: Cardiologist George Sheehan's ideas on physical activity and its role in happy and healthy lifestyles were presented so succintly in the film 'Coping with Life on the Run.' Sheehan believed in the need for both physical and intellectual stimulation and encouraged playful activity among adults. Moreover, he said that physical activity fosters creativity and that sports and other fitness activities help people to know their individual capabilities. Sheehan's ideas jibed with the view linking physical activity to psychological wellbeing.

Over 40 million youth participate in organized sports, and playing some sort of sport as a youth has become an American tradition. Boys and girls have a wide array of choices and become engaged in sports for a variety of reasons. This is the 115th issue of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Youth Development. ... Read more
