Editorial Review Product Description We marvel at the steely nerves, acute concentration, and flawless execution exhibited on the 18th green, at the free-throw line, in the starting blocks, and on the balance beam. While state-of-the-art training regimens have extended athletes' physical boundaries, more and more coaches are realizing the importance of sport psychology in taking athletic performance to new levels. Tomorrow's record-breaking accomplishments will not be the result of athletes' training harder physically, but of athletes' training smarter mentally. Sport Psychology for Coaches provides information that coaches need to help athletes build mental toughness and achieve excellence—in sport and in life. As a coach, you'll gain a big-picture perspective on the mental side of sport by examining how athletes act, think, and feel when they practice and compete. You'll learn to use such mental tools as goal setting, imagery, relaxation, energization, and self-talk to help your athletes build mental training programs. You'll also see how assisting your athletes in developing mental skills such as motivation, energy management, focus, stress management, and self-confidence leads to increased enjoyment, improved life skills, and enhanced performance. And you'll discover how to put it all together into mental plans and mental skills training programs that allow your athletes to attain and maintain a mind-set that fosters peak performance. The easy-to-follow format of the text includes learning objectives that introduce each chapter, sidebars illustrating sport-specific applications of key concepts and principles, chapter summaries organized by content and sequence, key terms, chapter review questions, a comprehensive glossary, and other useful resources to help readers implement mental training programs for athletes. Written primarily for high school coaches, Sport Psychology for Coaches is a practical, easy-to-use resource reflecting the two authors' combined 45 years of teaching, coaching, researching, and consulting experience. It reflects principles that are not only consistent with the latest theory and research, but have stood the test of time and worked for coaches and athletes in all sports at all levels. You'll come away from Sport Psychology for Coaches with a greater understanding and appreciation for sport psychology and the practical knowledge you need to put it to work for you and your athletes. Sport Psychology for Coaches serves as the text for the American Sport Education Program Silver Level course, Sport Psychology for Coaches. Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Sport Psychology Interventions shows professionals how to help athletes get the most out of their sport experience and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Edited by Shane Murphy, former sport psychologist for the United States Olympic Committee, this practical guide explains how to assist athletes at all levels in facing the special challenges and unique problems that are common in today's sports world. Unlike texts that discuss psychological interventions aimed directly at improving athletic performance, Sport Psychology Interventions focuses on helping athletes enjoy their participation more and, as a result, perform better and achieve their goals by -growing and developing as individuals, and -experiencing sport as a positive learning process. Part I presents a variety of intervention models. By studying each model in the context of its application to a particular kind of athlete, the contributors are able to address specific issues related to -competitive recreational athletes, -student athletes, -female athletes, -elite athletes, and -other sport groups. -Educational -Multisystemic -Family systems -Organizational -Developmental -Marital therapy -Cognitive-behavioral Part II examines issues commonly encountered by many helping professionals in the sport setting. Case studies illustrate how sport psychology can be used in counseling athletes who are experiencing special circumstances, including -alcohol and drug use, -eating disorders and weight management, -career transitions, and -overtraining and burnout. Customer Reviews (1)
A Handbook for Good Professional Practice The book is well organized into multiple applied settings that explore models of intervention and special issues in counseling athletes. Specialists in sub-fields of sport psychology tackle sensitive areas in each chapter, for example, children in sport, working with a coach in a team setting, gender issues, providing services to student athletes, caring for injured athletes, over-training and burnout. Like other similar books in the field, (such as Williams (Editor) (1998) Applied Sport Psychology: Personal Growth to Peak Performance (3rd Ed)), 'Sport Psychology Interventions' gives a basic literature review for each chapter covered but also uses case studies taken from the experiences of well respected sport psychology professionals to demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions. As a trainee sport psychologist, I found the format of the book particularly helpful because of the applied nature. Writing from both the educational and clinical perspectives, `Sport Psychology Interventions' is well supported by research, exploring many areas of ethical and intervention issues that any practicing professional in the area are likely to face. From this standpoint the book is an invaluable resource that can be developed to facilitate much discussion about delivery guidelines and `our' boundaries as health care and performance enhancement professionals. A worthwhile addition to your library. ... Read more |
