Product Description
Gestalt therapy first moved to center stage in the early 1950s with the publication of Gestalt Therapy: Excitement and Growth in the Human Personality written by Frederick Perls, Ralph Hefferline, and Paul Goodman. It is one of a handful of seminal texts published shortly after World War II that opened the pathways for new approaches to psychotherapy that remain in print today, over a half-century later. Interest in Gestalt therapy was limited primarily to mental health practitioners for almost twenty years when it suddenly captured the interest of many diverse groups outside the healing professions including educators, members of the clergy, and the general public. When a photograph of one of its founders, Frederick (Fritz) Perls, was featured in a story and a full-page color photograph in Life magazine, it became the "in" therapeutic method of the moment. The publicity brought the attention of the mental health community to Gestalt therapy and among the first books published in almost two decades intended primary for the professional was this book, Gestalt Therapy Now. The contributors, Arnold Beisser, Lois Brien, Henry Close, Ruth Cohn, Bruce Denner, Katherine Ennis, John Burke Enright, Joen Fagan, Walter Kempler, Elaine Kepner, Janet Lederman, Abraham Levitsky, Sandra Mitchell, Claudio Naranjo, Vincent Francis O'Connell, Frederick Perls, Laura Perls, Janie Rhyne, Marilyn B. Rosanes-Berrett, Irma Lee Shepherd, James S. Simkin, and Richard W. Wallen were the leading Gestalt trainers and practitioners of the time. This Gestalt Journal Press edition includes all the original contributions plus a timely foreword by noted Gestalt trainer and organizational consultant, Seán Gaffney. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is Great Entertainment
Hi! I'm Axel M. and this here is an awesome manga. I read a scan of it (so that could review it) and I ordered and it will be arriving soon. It is awesome (did I already say that?). While the introduction is quite unexplained, it has great artwork that give it an awesome 1990's video-gamey feel and after the characters do have their own stats like in a game. The artwork is very good. So it follows this priest dude (woman?) named Olivier who has this cool star on his forehead, along the he meets this cute Ouri dude (girl?) who has lost his power to speak. They both have magic powers and there's elf girls and it's awesome read. Anyway this is like totally a big adventure/fantasy type story that is not-page-gripper but is still very likable. I reading the second right now and it is not that kind of manga that just can't put down, and it is not overly-emotional but it is still entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting wild journey begins
Presented in unflipped format (read right-to-left, just as the author originally drew it), Gestalt Volume 1 is a black-and-white manga (Japanese graphic novel) that takes a sharp twist on the usual fantasy-adventure saga! Father Olivier is a peaceful cleric undergoing a crisis of faith - all his life he has been taught that a terrible banished demon god whose name cannot be spoken (he is known only as "G") is the embodiment of evil - but is this really true? Could the legends about G be a distorted story as told by the victors of the conflict? Olivier befriends Ouri, a young girl from the south who cannot speak. But she is anything other than demure - her violent side is a superhuman entity that considers clashing with others of her kind a fantastic game, regardless of the fallout to surrounding humans or their cities! The dark elf Suzu has been sent to stop Olivier; when she catches up to him, does she (or Olivier) have a prayer of weathering Ouri's wild side? An exciting wild journey begins, in this action-packed story where for once, it is the male member of the adventuring party who is a soft-spoken priest! Recommended for older teen readers due to some violence (and very skimpy clothing).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Read from Yun Kouga
Yun Kouga has a way of playing with charactes that makes reading the mangas quite an adventure. Filled with her usual doses of gender-bending, and same-sex romances it's quite a start for the re-release of the manga. Gestalts characters are more than meets the eye so don't let the beginning appearances fool you.

The story centers around an inexperienced priest as he makes his journey to the forbidden island of Gestalt. With him is the interesting slave Ouri, who seems to possess more magic than Olivier first thought and seems to have an extensive knowledge of the Land of Gestalt. Don't let Ouri fool you, as "she" also seems to be a he, and is connected to those attempting to stop the priests journey and destroy them all.

The first book of the series leaves a good number of questions, but it's a good read for those who like a puzzle. ... Read more

Product Description
Gestalt in Pastoral Care and Counseling is the only book to provide you with an integrated model of pastoral care and counseling from the perspective of Gestalt theory. Covering all aspects of ministry, including visitation, counseling, worship, and administration, it is a valuable text for advanced undergraduate or graduate classes and small group or individual study for seminaries, church ministries, pastoral counseling training programs, and lay pastoral ministry programs. This book will increase your confidence in your work, help you understand blockages as well as avenues of change, and lead you to a more creative, yet consistent, stance in your ministry.

Gestalt in Pastoral Care and Counseling makes clear that all of ministry is, in fact, pastoral in nature. It demonstrates the principles of Gestalt in pastoral ministry in a gradual manner, true to both Gestalt principles and your needs. Some of the topics you learn about include:

  • key elements of Gestalt theory, from the early developers through more recent practices
  • the cycle of experience--a model that provides an understanding of the various steps involved in change on all levels
  • Gestalt applications in pastoral counseling, worship, and administration
  • a theology of pastoral caring--a model for pastoral ministry based on the relational aspects of the Biblical narrative and its application in ministry
  • ideas for continued growth based on daily life experience

With well-developed presentations of Gestalt principles and pastoral ministry, Gestalt in Pastoral Care and Counseling provides you with a new perspective on the meaning of pastoral ministry. Not only will you learn new skills, you will also develop a new appreciation for what can occur within pastoral relationships. The theoretical basis of Gestalt embraces the whole of life experience as part of the process of change and growth and holds sacred the relationship that exists between persons. As your understanding and use of these principles increases, the quality of care and counseling you provide in your ministry will continue to improve.

Product Description
With increased interest in predicting and ultimately preventing academic failure in children comes the need for effective preschool and primary school assessment. The first step in developing an effective assessment program is to select tests that will yield data needed for individual decision making. One factor that has been shown to contribute to the prediction of children’s academic achievement is visual-motor-integration skill. The Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test was developed in the 1980s to measure visual-motor-integration skill in preschool and early elementary school children. The assessment instrument utilizes six of the nine Bender-Gestalt Test designs, which are copied by the child. It may be administered in either individual or group format. The scoring system involves a six-point scale used to judge the overall quality of each design. Examiners will find the assessment instrument easy to administer, score, and interpret. Further, research has shown that the assessment instrument is a reliable and valid predictor of school achievement. This book will describe the development and refinement of the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test. In addition, it will provide detailed information and guidelines for administering, scoring, and interpreting the test. Specifically, there are separate chapters on administration and scoring, standardization and norming, reliability and validity, and interpretation. In short, the book contains everything psychologists and educational specialists need to know to use the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test. ... Product Description

In this original and penetrating work, the origins of the Gestalt psychotherapy model are traced back to its roots in psychoanalysis and Gestalt cognitive and perceptual psychology.  Drawing new implications for both Gestalt and psychotherapy in general from these origins - and with special emphasis on the neglected work of Lewis and Goldstein - Wheeler develops a revised model that is more fully "Gestalt" and at the same time more firmly grounded in the spectrum of tools and approaches available to the contemporary psychotherapist.  Along the way, a number of new insights are offered, not just in Gestalt, but in the working of the psychoanalytic and cognitive/behavioral models.  The result is an integrated approach giving a fresh perspective on the universal processes of contact and resistance, both in psychotherapy and in social systems in general.  The practitioner is given these tools for "addressing problems at the intra- and interpersonal level and wider systematic levels at the same time, and in the same language."

Each chapter stands alone, and makes a fresh and significant contribution to its particular subject.  Taken together, they constitute a remarkable excursion through the history of psychotherapy in this century, weaving powerfully through social psychology, behaviorism, and Gestalt itself, yielding a masterful new synthesis that will interest the practitioners of Gestalt and other schools alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial, difficult and worth it.
One of the few really impressive Gestalt therapy texts out there. The author has the smarts, the skills and the patience to bring Gestalt therapy out of the quagmire of showy charlatanism and to place it on solid theoretical ground. This book is controverisal in that it challenges many of the nearest and dearest assumptions of Fritz Perls' ideas and practice--but it's encouraging in that it draws on Perls' (and others) insights to point toward a more complete, more radical and more fully humanistic Gestalt therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A provocative reassessment of Gestalt therapy.
Wheeler takes Gestalt therapy in a whole new direction in this book, bridging the gap between Fritz Perls' biologistic thinking and Husserlian phenomenology. The so-called "resistances to caontact" become "styles of contact" in Wheeler's vision. For the philosophicaly minded, this is reminiscent of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty.For the clinically minded, Wheeler takes Gestalt therapy from its unfortunate preoccupation with 'technique' toward a thoroughly practical assessment and intervention of the total clinical field. The extraordinary thing is how he bridges between the foundational theoretical precepts of Gestalt theory and the concrete praxis of the practicing clinician. This book will change the the way you practice your craft on a day to day basis. ... It certainly helps one understand much better how to work with children and provide techniques. However, I think it is because I used this with my Child Therapy class in graduate school so I can utilize this book to its fullest potential. First published in 1975 and revised and updated in 1989, Opening Doors was the first book to offer insight into what takes place in the consulting room of a Gestalt therapist during both individual and group sessions. In the first edition the author offered clinical vignettes detailing more than thirty of his patients. In the revised edition, published fifteen years later, he includes a brief "update," writing of how Gestalt therapy impacted each of their lives. The author was one of the first to provide therapeutic services to AIDs victims from Manhattan's Gay Community and shares some of his moving experiences with his gay clients. In her forward, Gestalt therapy founder Laura Perls wrote: "This book is a strong gestalt, a successful integration of theory and practice, of explanation and expression, into an intensely personal style of communication. Daniel Rosenblatt's precise and, at the same time, imaginative and flowing use of language in dialogue and metaphor makes exciting and enjoyable reading. Product Description

Aggression, Time, and Understanding is the first book of Staemmler’s writings to be published in English. In the early sections of this book, Staemmler (supported by his Buddhist wife, Barbara) comprehensively explores and questions the traditional Gestalt therapy theory of aggression and proposes a new approach to working with anger and hostility. Further sections include in-depth examinations of the topics of time (the "Here and Now" and "Regressive Processes") and understanding ("Dialogue and Interpretation" and "Cultivated Uncertainty.") From Staemmler’s "critical gaze," Dan Bloom observes, "concepts emerge as refreshed, re-formed, and revitalized constructs so we can continue to develop the theory and practice of contemporary Gestalt therapy."

5-0 out of 5 stars You are not really a gestalt therapist until you have read and integrated this book
If Perls Hefferline and Goodman were writing today, they would be Staemmler, Perls, Hefferline and Goodman.

This book makes what might be the most significant revision to gestalt therapy theory ever. In book-length section one Staemmler corrects an egregious error that both gestalt therapy and psychoanalysis have at their foundations -- a conflation of assertiveness with aggression. Not only does Staemmler correct this error, but he also provides fresh, new insight on how to deal with aggression when it does arise in therapy. His revised theory also finally allows for the meaningful integration of Eastern thought in gestalt psychotherapy, something PHG attempted in 1951, but never really pulled off. The remaining sections of the book are interesting but do not make the earth move in the same way as the first -- aftershocks to section one's 10.0 on the Richter scale. Buy this book now. It changes everything. ... Read more

In this new edition of a work on the use of narrative in an experiential approach informed by Gestalt principles, Judith Brown, a Gestalt teacher and therapist, enters the world of folktale in order to help readers recognize their own behaviour in marriages and other intimate relationships. For Brown, the trials, tribulations, adventures and misadventures of folktale marriages provide exaggerated examples of behaviours with which readers can identify and learn from. By reflecting on the foibles and frustrations of folktale couples, it is hoped that the reader will emerge with a heightened awareness of the self in a relationship, and will have a deeper understanding of the requirements of the relationship. ... Product Description
Gestalt Therapy has been developing steadily for the last 50 years in America as well as in Europe. It is currently practiced in different settings: individual, group, and family therapies; personal growth; and social, medical and business organizations.

This book is written mostly for beginners and for psychotherapy clients: it summarizes the central philosophy of this approach and the main techniques for the enrichment of contact. It includes sketches, charts, indexes, a glossary and a bibliography, which help make the concept come alive. It also explains, in an accessible way, the latest discoveries concerning the brain (neurosciences), dreams and sexuality.

Serge Ginger puts forth a specifically French approach: a synthesis of the French culture (greatly influenced by psychoanalysis) along with a mobilizing and interactive method, emphasizing the cycle of contact, evoking the emotions, the body and the right hemisphere of the brain.

It is a new, optimistic approach to human relations. ... Read more
