1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I wanted.....
I wanted a dream explainer as described 'dream reader', and what I've got was a lot of scientific info about dreams.

5-0 out of 5 stars anexpansive review of the field of dream studies
This book is an interesting, intelligent and all encompassing overview of the field of dream studies. This is not the New Age pablum that some might fear because of the area of focus, but is rather a serious scientific and cultural analysis of dream studies in recent times. As someone who doesn't know alot about the field I enjoyed it, and I think it would be interesting for those already well read in the area as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Freud or Jung but close enough
I have been facinated with dreams since I was a child (I think we all are fascinated with dreams) so I have read as much material on this subject, from the mystic to the more cognitive stuff. This book is really good. Not mystic but not to 'scientific' to require a PhD from Yale. It has helped me to understand why I dream what I dream and how the dreams I have at night are a way that my subconcious reveals to me the inner thoughts of my soul.

1-0 out of 5 stars All About Dreams
Okay, but readers of this book should balance the content against other compelling perspectives, e.g., DREAMS by KALLMYER is an excellent book which provides a scholarly, yet practical view that is sure to challengethe reader.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some very good info, but unorganized and choppy
This book could be a real gem, if only there was more focus and flow in its organization. I particularly like the methodologies put forth for dream analysis, and felt the book's strength is in its "how to" appeal.I also liked some of the background and historical perspective. I think agood editor could have re-organized and streamlined the content to make itmore readable. I also did not like the frequent references to Ms. Delaney'sother books. It seems like they were advertising rather than validreferences.

1-0 out of 5 stars Our reading group was not impressed
As host of the metaphysical reading group at Pages for All Ages Bookstore in Champaign, I always release a personal review first, before the group book review. After we are settled, a member will give their opinion, andwe go around the room that way with dailogue going back and forth. In theend, we rate it 1-5 stars with a zero possible. I wish our group could havegiven All About Dreams a better rating as the book is not without itsredeeming qualities.Ms. Delany seems a personalble, inspired, andintelligent voice on the subject. But we were looking for more. Our groupis comprised with astute readers from 70 to 25 years old. There are sevenof us.All the readers did not have a problems with Ms. Delany, but we hada problem with depth of the exposition. Our group rating is one starbecause of what wasn't in it.Our group sees a UFO connection ineverything it seems and that wasn't expounded upon.It was nice to see Ms.Delany's touch upon Asian concepts, but that too lacked any informativerevelation from the Vedas, the Buddhist sutras, or the Tao.Everyonethought that it was there that the best information about dreams, bardos, and consciousness was. There was much complaint about the layout of thebook, from the typeface to the organization of material.Very picky is thePages reading group.Of four books reviewd thus far, only one has receivedfive stars. The others got wacked.Just because you appear on Ophradoesn't mean much to our group.Substance, creativity, execution, and theend prodouct are what we look at.Its nothing personal to the authors, wejust love great books and have very high standards.I hope someday thatMs. Delany does the ultimate book on dreams and we can rate it five stars. We wish that to all the titles and their authors.

1-0 out of 5 stars all about nothing
Our reading group chose this title to look at dreams. With eager anticipation we read the book.It was amazing to me that this book was so shallow. It was written like an academic paper that received a D from herprofessor. Not only was the content unimaginaitive and the conclusionsdubious, the typefaces of the books made it hard to read - actuallydistracting.I wanted to find something of value and found onlypsycho-babble of the most unenlightened kind. For those who believe theywill better understand dreams from reading this book, beware. You willunderstand nothing more than you do now and will in fact be loaded downwith nonsense. This is a zero star book. How did it receive five stars? Five stars....in your dreams Dr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Opens the Understanding of Dreams
The first book I read by John Sanford was DREAMS - GOD'S FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE.This book, written some years later, is an excellent follow up.But it can also stand by itself. It is not necessary to read his other book to read this one.

It helps to know that Sanford is an Episcopal priest and a Jungian analyst.

This book is divided into three sections:

1. The first deals with the structure, levels, and drama of dreams as well as their use and the healing power they have.He gives and example of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream in the book of Daniel, and also has a section on working with our own dreams.

2. The second section deals with eight dreams by a young man named Martin. It basically gives him insight into his own maturity and in the process of analyzing Martin's dreams, Sanford also gives insights into how this can be applied to our own lives.

3. The third section deals with the dreams of a woman named Marie who also had her path in life.As in the section about Martin, Sanford shows how this can apply to our lives, even though the symbols in Marie's dreams differ from Martin's.

Sanford makes a great deal of mention of the "anima" (the woman within the man) and the "animus" (the man within the woman.).

You may or may not finish this book being able to interpret your own dreams - but by reading it, you'll gain a lot of insight about dreams and what they do for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth, but readable
As a psychotherapist and a minister I enjoy reading material such as this that supports and informs my work and my ministry. This text is well written and thought provoking. It would be better if the reader had a working knowlege of Jungian psychology and Christian mysticism, but any sincere truth seeker would profit from contemplating the ideas and examples presented. I am recommending it to people who are interested in knowing more about themselves and their relationship with God.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dreams and Healing - a passable book
Dreams and Healing by John A. Sandford is good, it's help me understand my dreams better, but it relies on psychology too much. I wish Rev. Sandford had used Scripture more in his boook. It would give the book more balance.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Book
This is an exceptional book that not only shares the deeper meaning of dreams, but also the individuation process, the various stages of shedding layers of ego, how the soul and core self hidden within the underlying unconscious become our friends in our dream state when we are asleep.
The book has fantastic suggestions that teach you how to navigate and work with your dreams to better assist you into a higher state of awakening in your everyday consciousness.
I highly recommend this book not just for learning more about dreams, but for learning more about personal awakening. It is simply fantastic, and extremely well written!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid, intelligent, helpful!
I just picked this book up again after four years of daily dream journaling and was amazed at the accuracy, depth, clarity and intelligence of this little book.

John Sanford does as good a job as I've seen as introducing what dreams are (including a nice discussion of the unconcious and its relationship to our waking lives), some history of cultural approaches to dreams, what it's possible to gain from working with your dreams, and some concrete techniques for how to do that.

Reading this book could, as it did for me, open up a rich, compelling world of self-understanding, creativity, humor, healing and, well, fun for you. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Thought-Provoking, Practical
At a time when the perennial struggle to reconcile Science and Religion has been fueled by "Intelligent Design" campaigns, Dr. Zeiders' work proves that these two realms of human experience need not be antagonistic. Not since reading Thomas Merton have I encountered a Christian author so clear and objective in his thought, tolerant in his views, powerful and poetic in his expression, and so firmly rooted in his faith. Dr. Zeiders' Christian orientation is undeniable, yet he speaks with a voice of reason that transcends religious and scholarly differences. I highly recommend this work to anyone, Christian or no, seeking to unite rationality and spirit in their personal or professional work. Here you'll find inspiring case studies, thought-provoking discourse, and practical counsel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Insightful, Sensitive
The author deftly synthesises what most in his profession sadly view as competing systems.I found this to be a brilliant and insightful book.In an age of polarizing forces of materialism, egoism, fundamentalism, and a myriad of other destructive -isms, I found his to be a voice in the wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars elegant, clear prose/ a humane cerebral writer
This lovely, compassionate book is also one of the best written books I have recently read from a Christian thinker. Dr. Zeiders avoids the typical anti-intelllectual platitudes of the Christian right and the New Age movement. Instead, he presents spiritually reasoned arguements supported by his case studies and his own careful and extensive study of the psychology of forgiveness.
Although written primarily for Christian psychotherapists, this is a book that will benefit clinicians from many diffrent practices.
This collection of essays marks the debut of a significant Christian thinker. Although Dr. Zeiders dispalys a mastery of psychological theory and psychotherapeutic technique, he is a much deeper thinker- one of those rare writers whose work influences many kinds of thinkers, writers, and poets.
In the future, this book will be mined by novelists, philosophers, theologians, criminologists, artists, poets and human beings suffering through the vicissitudes of everyday life for its spiritual insights into the human heart.
Dr. Zeiders will inevitably be compared with psychologists like M. Scott Peck, but he has more intellectual heft and literary flair- imagine a psychologist with the literary and spiritual depth of C.S. Lewis or G.K. Chesterton. He offers hope by the simple (though not easy) act of forgiveness for human beings who have sunk to spiritual and psychological dregs.
"The Clinical Christ" is a manifesto for Christian therapists seeking a complex, intellectual, and deeply spiritual framework for transfroming human pain to human hope.

Product Description
We all dream - and which of us could not recall some strange or vivid dream that lingers in the memory? What is the purpose of such dreams? Do they have meaning or are they nonsense? Can they help us with our problems? How do we understand the structure and strange symbolism of dreams? And what do we make of nightmares? Dr J. A. Hadfield spent much of his professional career dealing with people's dreams. In this engaging classic he drew upon this experience to provide a comprehensive and balanced view of the various theories of dream interpretation. His scholarship ranges from the ideas of primitive peoples and dreams in classical times, through the theories of Freud and Jung, to the various biological interpretations. Among the topics he explores are the role of nightmares, dreams and psychical research, dreams and neuroses, and dreams and problem solving. Dreams have a fascination for everyone. In this reprint of a long out of print classic text, Dr Hadfield's takes us beyond the bizarre and strange imaginings that nightly unfold as we sleep and helps show us the importance of our dreamlife. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding peace and knowledge in your Dreams
The Dream Book brings me early morning calm on days the night has only set me into uncertainty and confusion. The symbols are clear and specific and easy to come to feelings of peace and knowing from reviewing. The symbols are not always the "answer" that the dreams are telling me, but the leads that the book provides are very helpful in bringing understanding to my
consciousness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I consider this book to be the single best dream interpretation book there is.Betty Bethards was a very special woman, and she explains very well what dreams are and how to understand them. The book consists of 55 pages of explanation and the rest is all definitions of dream symbols. She also goes into brief detail on how to remember dreams more consistently as well as a basic way to meditate. This is a book that I will cherish and keep with me for the rest of my days, and a book that I have bought as a gift for many of my family and friends.I would recommend this book to everyone, and I have already recommended it to many.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the most part...
For the most part, this is a good book but it does have a few faults. One that I find a bit off putting is the "God" language.I'm glad that it looked at dreams from a spiritual aspect but I would have felt more comfortable with a more generic term for the Divine. It also got a bit preachy at times.I did like that she included the chakra system and the importance of including those ideas in your interpretation repertoire.

The second thing that made me hesitate was that, although she has a whole paragraph saying that "you are the final word" on the meaning of a dream symbol, she immediately follows that with several pages containing some pretty concrete interpretations. For instance, she claims that if you are traveling in a downward direction in a dream, it means you are going the wrong way. It possibly could, but it may instead indicate that you are "going deeper", so a blanket interpretation like that could be misleading.I would have been happier if she had used a lot more terms like "may mean", "could possibly indicate", "sometimes shows", etc.

One statement that the author made that I do agree with is that the feelings that the dream leaves you with are very important when determining it's meaning. If a dream had disturbing images but ultimately you awoke feeling powerful and liberated then those "positive" emotions give you a real direction for interpreting the dream.

Overall, I think I prefer the book from Kelly Sullivan Walden called "I Had the Strangest Dream...".She outlines a great method in which you write down the key symbols from your dream in one column, your own interpretation in a second column and then, lastly, the dream dictionary definition in the third. This correlates a lot with the method we use in the "dream group" I belong to.We really encourage each other to come up with three or four of our own words to describe each of the prominant symbols in the dream, whether objects, places or people. My four words for cat (for example) may be very different from someone elses and it is ultimately most important how I perceive the symbols.

Here are a couple little tips that I have used for years that you may find helpful:

1. To remember a dream, immediately create a couple keywords to summarize it.For example, if I briefly awake right after a dream during the night about being beside a beautiful mountain stream with my favorite pet, I repeat "stream, Boots (my cat), stream, Boots, stream, Boots" over and over in my mind until I fall back asleep.Once I wake up in the morning, if I can remember those keywords, they will bring most of the dream back with them, even the details. It may not be as fail proof as having a pen and paper right beside the bed, but it is more practical for me (and makes my spouse's night sleep a lot better too). With this method, I can get up, use the bathroom, and make a pot of coffee before I sit down to write out my dreams and I don't have to worry about forgetting as soon as my head leaves the pillow.

2. Create your own dream dictionary! This is especially helpful if you have recurring symbols, images, objects or people in your dreams. This can take some work and will definitely evolve over time but it is very helpful in giving you a place to start with a dreams interpretation.Over years of recording my dreams, developing my own interpretations and learning my own symbols, I now know that when cat is in my dream, this is a spiritual lesson. My interpretation is now jump started because I know from which angle to approach it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
I have this book close at hand at all times...it is an unbelievably reliable resource for dreams and life's every day messages and situations.I highly recommend it!!!Full of truth and wisdom...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book You'll Ever Need To Understand Your Dreams
The best book I have found for dream interpretation is Betty Bethard's "Dream Book." It is also great for interpreting signs and omens that come into our life. It is universal. I am a Feng Shui consultatant and refer to it daily.
Betty Bethards was a great mystic, an excellent teacher and a compassionate person. There is a wonderful meditation at the back to the book, that can really change your life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreams as Applied Psychological Tool
An interesting book. I learned more about dreaming from McPhee's book. McPhee writes about dreaming as applied psychology. Lucid dreaming becomes a way to bring the unconscious into consciousness, which he sees as the primary practice of psychology and self-analysis. The problem he sees is repression which is unconscious and not available to the ego during normal waking consciousness. His goal is to become more aware of what and when we are repressing. Dreams put us in contact with the unconscious and the repressed material -- if we can become conscious in our dreams (lucid dreaming). He has a chapter on lucid dreamers of the past. But what is missing from this book is explanation of how to accomplish lucid dreaming or references for how to pursue this. There is a long section that is an extended extract from the writing of Gurdjieff which seemed the least relevant or interesting to me. The chapters reviewing the history of sleep and dream research are interesting (but maybe dated at this point). ... Read more

Product Description

Dreaming is a universal phenomenon. Nearly everybody dreams and is anxious to know what it means. Perhaps no other human experience has aroused so much interest and curiosity as this alien visitation that forces itself upon us without warning during the dead of sleep. Since antiquity, thousands of books and articles have been written to shed some light on this mysterious, and often unwelcome nightly visitor. Despite tremendous work in this field, the riddle remains unsolved. Still no satisfactory answers have been provided to these basic questions: Why do we dream? What are dreams about? Where do they come from? How can we understand them?

This book is significantly different from those of others in this area, as the answers presented are not the author's own views; they are largely his dreams' answers to the questions just posed. Instead of speculation, this author, a psychologist by profession, has put forward what his own dreams have consistently and persistently revealed to him over the past thirty years. Since 1973, he has recorded over 100, 000 dreams, filling some 230 journals of 200 pages each. The length of the dreams varies greatly; some consist of a single word or phrase, others fill a page or more.

This book is written to share with others what the author has gained from his journey into the dreamworld and from his long and patient analysis of this vast number of dreams. Three conclusions have been drawn from this investigation: 1) Dreams are not caused by repressed sexual wishes, somatic sources, impressions of the preceding days, or other mundane instigators, as claimed by Freud and his followers; 2) Dreams do have a supernatural source, as pronounced by many writers through the ages; and 3) Through dreams this supernatural source reveals to us who we really are, brings to light who He is, and invites us to lead our own lives sensibly and purposefully.

Using his own dreams as illustrations, the author addresses a wide variety of topics relating to the domain of dreams, including: Are dreams a source of creativity? Why do some of us have frequent nightmares? Can we control the content of our dreams? Why are dreams so cryptic? How can we decipher our dream symbols to understand their meanings? Do characters in our dreams refer to persons we know of, or do they stand for components of our own identity? How should we understand the verbal contents of our dreams? Can dreams guide us as to how we should conduct our lives? Is the reality we experience during our dreams more dependable or the one we experience in waking life?

The main purpose of the book is to elucidate that dreams are trustworthy teachers. In the realm of growth and self-discovery, we must regard as suspect whatever we learn from others, however wise and well-meaning. But whatever is conveyed to us directly, through dreams, is credible since it emanates from within us and is free from inconsistencies and adulterations. Our major challenge is to understand the symbolic language used by the wise guide we have within. ... Read more

Product Description

Rethinking the importance of Sigmund Freud’s landmark book The Interpretation of Dreams a century after its publication in 1900, this work brings together psychoanalysts, philosophers, cultural theorists, film and visual theorists, and literary critics from several continents in a compilation of the best clinical and theoretical work being done in psychoanalysis today. It is unique in convening both theory and practice in productive dialogue, reflecting on the encounter between psychoanalysis and the tradition of hermeneutics. Collectively the essays argue that Freud’s legacy has shaped the way we think about not only psychology and the nature of the self but also our understanding of politics, culture, and even thought itself.

I don't usually read a book that I don't like .It claimed to give a biblical understanding of dreams. I disagree.I say a lot of personal interpertation very little from the Bible. This one I would not reccommend to anyone.

Some will call me a heretic, but a derivation of that word includes those that make choices or distinctions and do not swallow everything whole. We heretics chew our food carefully.Whereas the orthodox like Jonah's fish swallow everything whole.Orthodox is from the Latin "ortho" which means "straight"-as in orthodontics, which is to make straight teeth; crooked teeth being a product of the so-called fall of man.I'm happy for those that can get it to go down like that, but generally the rest of us can only do what we can and I end up chewing and chewing and chewing. The word "Gospel" is a retelling of a story and that's what I'm doing here, albeit in a more modern parlance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars They are great
These cards are not designed to tell your future. They are a great tool in helping you understand your dreams and help you make some life desicions based on your dreams, or on your waking life. You can do a 1 card reading, picking a card from random, meditating on it and using the companion cards, the next morning to help you understand your dream.I have had my cards for about 13 years.I love them and I highly recommend them to help you interpret your dreams: )

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Dream Interpretation and More
This set is my favorite tool for dream interpretation. I became acquainted with the Dream Cards when my supervisor shared with me that they were being used in a college psychology course on dream interpretation. I bought my own set and taught myself to use them. I learned to read tarot by intuition, and the Dream Cards assisted me with interpreting dreams in the same manner. While symbols are very useful, they are not 100% essential in interpreting your dreams. Colors, images and actions are just as critical and the author's method teaches you to interpret these as well, helping you build the skills necessary to interpret your dreams by intuition. An added benefit is that the cards can be used on their own as a meditation tool for self-guidance and while I haven't used them as such, I'm sure they can even be used as a form of tarot for readings. I've used the cards for about seven years now and have not run across any other method that I would recommend. The price has gone up substantially since I purchasedmine, but they are still one of the best investments you'll ever make.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not the author...and he does go on a bit...but they work
These cards offer just the kind of open ended interpretations you need to explore the meaning of your dreams. Unlike books that often give interpretations dredged up from the dim past, they offer a unique and open ended Jungian slant.

When I got my deck I had dreamed of a pyramid. I decided to take a random card (like I might with a tarot deck) and see what came up. The picture on the card was surprizingly...a pyramid... and the meaning made sense. Jung would call this synchronisity. I call it usefull. Try them. I've enjoyed my deck tremendously.

Product Description
A fascinating strand of the human potential movement of the 1960s involved the dream mystique of a previously unknown Malaysian tribe, the Senoi, first brought to the attention of the Western world by adventurer-anthropologist-psychologist Kilton Stewart.Exploring the origin, attraction, and efficacy of the Senoi ideas, G. William Domhoff also investigates current research on dreams and concludes that the story of Senoi dream theory tells us more about certain aspects of American culture than it does about this distant tribe. In analyzing its mystical appeal, he comes to some unexpected conclusions about American spirituality and practicality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.
A must for thanatologists, psychologists who work with the dying and anyone for whom death is not merely an end.

5-0 out of 5 stars What does the unconscious say ....
This Jung quote sums up the theme of this book:

"If there is something we cannot know, we must necessarily abandon it as an intellectual problem ... But if an idea about it is offered to me - in dreams or in mythic traditions - I ought to take note of it. I even ought to build up a conception on the basis of such hints, even though it will forever remain a hypothesis."

Von Franz uses dreams, alchemy (Komarios to Cleopatra), and Egyptian mythology as exploratory tools to convincingly show that for the unconscious life after death is axiomatic.

Incredibly it seems the individuation process may continue after death!

Von Franzs style and elegance make this a book that you will want to read more than once. Also a very nice 8-page forward by Emmanuel Kennedy-Xypolitas.
