2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Domhoff's Dreams
This is an incredibly dry, uninspiring work of scientific literature. It does an effective job of present new developments in dream science since the activation-synthesis, including those of Solms and Foulkes. However, the majority of this work is bogged down with precise discussion of experiments and the author's favored dream-content analysis method. Compared with Hobson's 'The Dreaming Brain,' this work feels like a very weak response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for novices, and oh my so dry
My area of interest is REM sleep and dreaming and I have read many books and scientific journal articles on the subject. This book is full of statistics and data and is so dry I became dehydrated reading it.It is a good resource for someone who is conducting research on the cognitive aspects of dreams and their content. It is not a good book to get if you are new to the subject. Please read my "So you want to...learn about sleep and dreams" for some great recommendations on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars What the study of dreams SHOULD be
For far too long, most books about dreaming have been the realm of TV psychologists, mystics, and charlatans; G. William Domhoff is working to change all of that. This book is an excellent overview of recent breakthroughs and future possibilities in quantitative content analysis and neuroimaging studies. Domhoff also makes a convincing case for abandoning the Freudian and Jungian tenets that strangled dream research for most of the last century -- and he sows the seeds of a new cognitive theory that could guide research in the new millennium. ... Product Description
Self-identity is reflected in lifestyle; the clothes we wear, the kind of car we drive, how big our house is. Before information technology arrived, these outward appearances were easy for ourselves and others to see and judge the kind of person we were and our place in society. Computers are changing all this. Social interaction is being replaced by human-computer interaction and programs give us very few clues about the programmer. Old skills which were highly regarded in the industrial era are becoming less valuable to be replaced by a set of new skills relevant to information technology. The author draws on the experiences, hopes and dreams of computer users to explore the personal, psychological and philosophical implications for a post-industrial information technology-led society. ... Product Description
In Dreams, A Portal to the Source Edward C. Whitmont and Sylvia Brinton Perera, both leading Jungian analysts, provide an extensive guide to dream interpretation. Practical in approach, it is designed primarily for psychoanalysts and therapists who wish to integrate dream interpretation into their clinical practice. Among the topics covered are the language of dream images; the relations between the dream and the dreamer's conscious positions; the interplay between archetypal and personal levels; the dream's dramatic structure; body imagery in dreams; and the relevance of dreams to transference and countertransference. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enter into the portal of your dream life....
....as written by authors of a Jungian persuasion.

Those very familiar with Jungian dream theory will find the first couple of chapters slow and basic.Others will welcome the exposition of why dreams do what they do.

Dreams, not just as imaginal compensations for the narrowness of conscious daily life, but as completions, as fillings-in to be lived as night-time dramas; dreams as metaphoric missing pieces of what we neglect in our journeys toward wholeness; as messages, or letters, in the Talmudic sense, we must open to understand:all this is here, and warmly recommended.

I can't write a book review without at least a brief comment on style. In this case, nothing close to the poetry of a Hillman or a Romanyshyn.Adequately expository, though. They do a good job of seeing to it that the reader gets the ideas.

The authors claim to have written for clinicians, but the educated non-therapist unacquainted with the tools of dreamlife can find real gold in this book.

If you're curious beyond the simple "did I dream that because I ate a bad hamburger" or "I can't understand my dreams, so they don't make any sense," then begin here. ... Read more

Product Description
This sourcebook presents theories on dreams, from the speculative and general to the more concrete and well-demonstrated. The essays place dreams and theories about dreams in full clinical context. Each author uses the dream in a creative way to facilitate communication between his patient and himself. As Greenberg and Pearlman point out in their chapter, "The Private Language of the Dream", the dream is used to help the patient make emotional sense out of his experience. Overall, the book aims to show how different clinicians have used the dream with different patients in a variety of therapeutic settings. The dream is presented as a flexible tool to be used in therapy, geared to the individual patient's stage of development, meaning structure and memories. This book aims to free the clinician from a dogmatic approach to dreams and encourage him to understand the patient's own unique dream vocabulary, made up of his personal experience and concerns. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Todeschi Dictionary of Symbols
Dream Images and Symbols:A Dictionary is an excellent, accurate and well written book.Once again, Kevin Todeschi comes thru with a user friendly, accurate and relatable book.I realized after receiving this book, that it was the same one I'd had for years with a different cover.I use his advice in his books so often that I am satisfied to have one copy in my bedroom and one in my office.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST dream book I have found!
This is the best dream dictionary I have found. I have about 25 books on dreams and this is the book I refer back to again and again when looking for a meaning that I am having trouble finding on my own. This book is different because Kevin deals with the spiritual side of dreaming instead of the simple literal side. As an example, instead of the color Blue meaning something like "You will have a loss in love" or something silly like this, the color blue in his book has a more spiritual side, and may mean the soul, higher spiritual calling, and the 5th (throat) chakra in the human body. I'm calling this up from memory here, so don't quote me exactly! Anyway, what I have found in my case is that his meanings more closely reflect my personal meanings when I am working with my dreams.

At this point, I rarely use any of the dream books anymore, but when I am really stumped, this is the book I turn to. This book was recommended to me by my Jungian dream analyst, and I have found both her book recommendations and her knowledge invaluable in my quest to know myself fully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dream Dictionary
I have owned this book for years and recently gave 2 as gifts. It is comprehensive, easy to use and enlightening for anyone who wants to discover the meaning behind their dreams.

I have met the author and attended some of his seminars. He is an expert in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD SYMBOL INTERPRETATION BOOK AND MORE.....
I had no fewer than 4 books to refer to when I first began learning to read symbols in my dreams. This is the ONE that remains to be used even now, after years of reading/journaling my dreams. It is most helpful in that it includes "actions."It is very informative with colors, numbers, chakra inf., and it includes information on dreaming basics.Including information on why we recieve dreams that include death, sex, nightmares, other significant events. There is a page devoted to children and their dreams and nightmares.Particular symbols are very personal and this book provided me with a foundation to learn how to "determine" personal symbols. I believe that anyone using this book will find that they too will learn to use it in that way.During my dream interpretation work another book became useful because, animals are a large part of my life both in awake and dream time. The book I found that is SO helpful in understanding why certain animals come to us is: ANIMAL SPEAK by Ted Andrews. These two books are always by my bed.I refer to both when interpreting my dreams and synchronicities,I give both of these books 5 stars easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful & inspiring book
This book has been a great resource book for not just interprating dreams, but for creating images for meditations and interprating objects/ images/animals/colours etc. which are around me in my daily waking life. Thankyou. ... Read more

Product Description
In Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams, Elizabeth Caspari connects the world of real, living animals with the symbolic world of animal images in human thought, both conscious and unconscious. She gives the reader an opportunity to make this connection on his or her own personal journey of discovery.

This book is a study of animals—their natural history, mythology, folklore, and religious significance around the world as well as their role in our lives, dreams, and everyday language. It examines the symbolic impact animals have on our collective culture, particularly on our own personal and interior lives.

From Albatross to Zebra, each animal is pictured in color and factual context is given about its behavior in the natural world. Information is included about habitat, distribution, weight, size, longevity, and classification. By drawing on a process of amplification developed by C.G. Jung, in which an image is related to a previous historical, mythological, religious, or ethnological context, Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams discusses the meaning of the animal in a dream, amplifying the reader’s understanding of that animal. Intended for anyone interested in the actual behavior and nature of animals and the world we live in, Animal Life presents a good deal of ethological and mythological material. By contemplating the significance of our fellow creatures, and how everything in our universe is connected, Animal Life offers a more whole, and more healing, view of the world.

Fully illustrated in color. ... Read more

Product Description
Dreams told in the group are conjoint individual and group creations. They are both influenced by the group atmosphere and may in turn influence it and the individual, promoting change and development. Dreams have a deepening effect on therapeutic work and, due to their unconscious content, they may represent the most authentic exchange between individual and group.

This state-of-the-art book provides help for therapists encountering a dream told in their group. It covers the major theoretical perspectives for their understanding, as well as representing different psychological schools and their approaches to the technical issues of group dream therapy. Despite the variety of sources, the clinical approaches described complement each other, and the book details many case studies, including a first dream in the group, an unconscious meeting between women and men, and other polarities within the individual and the group. ... Product Description
The versatility of dreams-their intrinsic creativity and their healing potential-extends beyond their clinical usefulness. This versatility comes to life in the way this book's contributors have succeeded in extending dream work into the public domain--the home, the church, and the educational arena. The various perspectives include literature, creative writing, cultural anthropology, the priesthood, political science, computer science, history, psychosomatic medicine, and individual and group psychotherapy. Taken together they illustrate the far-reaching value of understanding our dreams and how much they can tell us about ourselves.

In this second edition of The Variety of Dream Experience, chapters have been updated and significant changes have been made in the way the group process is structured, making it easier to master and more effective in its application. Three new chapters have been added: one that discusses the importance of dream work in the training of pastoral counselors, another on how the experiential dream group process can be integrated into group psychotherapy, and a third on how the principles and rationale of the dream group process can be of help in individual therapy. Two other chapters have been substantially expanded: one on the role social forces play in the shaping of the dream, and the other on a very moving account of the role a dream played in working through an abusive relationship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get a feel for the scope of the subject
This is an excellent book to get a feel for the scope of dream work and the various schools of thought. It is like a great cross section of the field with lots of stimulating ideas from many points of view.

Kelly Bulkeley is a dream scholar who has compiled a volume with no obvious bias.It collects the best of what is out there and presents it in an easy to digest format.

If you are new to dream studies, I also recommend An Introduction to the Psychology of Dreaming by Kelly Bulkeley. This is a good summary resource for the work of Freud, Jung and others over the past 100 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only get one book on dreams -- make it this one!
(Right up front, I should say I am one of the authors of this book. So, I won't discuss my article.)But the rest of the book presents such a vast range of information -- the biology of dreaming, the role of dreams in different cultures (such as India, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Islam, Native American, New Guinea, Brazil...), in different cultural traditions, modern dream work from the familiar Jungian and Freudian analytical practices to less familiar non-western approaches, and a wide variety of current methods of working with dreams--that if you have no other on dreams on your bookshelf, I would highly recommend this one. And even if you have many others, this one will really open your eyes to the multi-dimensional view of dreams around the world and through time.

Perhaps the strongest aspect of this collection is that the various authors do not all agree with each other, nor does the editor attempt to create an artificial cohesion. Different points of view are allowed to coexist and to challenge each other. The final chapter is my favourite: 'Dialogue with a Skeptic' which features Frederick Crews and Kelly Bulkely. It allows the reader to vicariously participate in a debate between two scholars-a logical and well-structured debate, but one that is presented with elegance. It takes alot of nerve to do that!

The book as a whole is well-written, and can easily be read by anybody interested in the subject.Just pick it up, let the pages open at random, and read whichever chapter you have picked! ... Read more
