Product Description
Eduardo Duran—a psychologist working in Indian country—draws on his own clinical experience to provide guidance to counselors working with Native Peoples. Translating theory into actual day-to-day practice, Duran presents case materials that illustrate effective intervention strategies for prevalent problems, including substance abuse, intergenerational trauma, and internalized oppression. Offering a culture-specific approach that has profound implications for all counseling and therapy, this groundbreaking volume:

* Provides invaluable concepts and strategies that can be applied directly to practice.
* Outlines very different ways of serving American Indian clients, translating Western metaphor into Indigenous ideas that make sense to Native People.
* Presents a model in which patients have a relationship with the problems they are having, whether these are physical, mental, or spiritual.
* Includes a section in each chapter to help non-American Indian counselors generalize the concepts presented to use in their own practice in culturally sensitive ways. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and challenging
A phenomenally practical guide to healing American Indians - and anyone who wants to explore this approach.Worth more than the price. This book will challenge the non-Native counselor to explore thier own belief systems and come to appreciate the historical approach to treating Native clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars The incompetent may be allergic to this book..
Duran books spark diverse feelings. I found this and his prior work superb and profound, as have years of graduate students working in the field. Its still the best book of its kind for helping those with multigenerational trauma, both with Native Americans and other victimized populations. Yet one of the reviewers above, a woman using the innovative title "Anonymous" was clearly upset by both this book and Duran's Buddha in Redface earlier contribution. A quick look at her reviews sees her self-identify as "of Cherokee lineage" but in another as a "non-native person like myself"; she reads Lara Croft books even though "this book sucked" was the verdict for one of them; she loved the movie Hidalgo and hates her coffee pot. She says she headed a behavioral health unit with Native American clients. This rare allergic reaction to Eduardo Duran's continuing contributions is notble in that it truly does symbolize the many less than competent care managers and providers who for so long misunderstood and mistreated their diverse clients; who may lack the wisdom to know what they don't know. This confusion as to identity and capacity may be threatened by the clarity and substance of Eduardo Duran's books. They may see themselves and their shortcomings in these pages and, as Hans Toch says, if the shoe fits it will hurt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing the Soul Wound
This is a great example of the kinds of books that will actually assist in the quest for cultural competence. It is written in clear and concise language and the cultural interventions appear to be appropriate to the circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and practical guide to working with Native Peoples
As a psychiatrist who has treated and worked with Indigenous people in both New Zealand and the United States, I can honestly say that Eduardo Duran's recent book, Healing the Soul Wound, has not only greatly influenced my way of working with Indigenous people but has changed my way of viewing the world. In this book, he artfully and intelligently weaves Native American, Jungian, and Freudian concepts and wisdom with touches of mysticism and philosophy. I found his insights into the dreamtime to be profound and extremely helpful..."we have lost the ability to communicate with the Sacred because our egos have become so full of themselves."He goes on to say that through our dreams the Creator has found a way to get around our egos and talk to us.I was particularly struck by his thoughts on the meaning of suffering and the healing of the soul, not only of our patients, but of ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stereotypic internalized racism as projected metaphor
Duran's first book, NA Postcolonial Psychology was a ground breaker. This most recent book offends on many levels. The idea that all native people must return to traditional ways in order to heal makes the assumption that they don't have within them or around them what they need in order to do so without some hierarchical psuedo-shamanist wannabe medicine man with a degree in clinical psychology spoon feeding them. Then, to make matters worse, traditional medicines are taught to be used by 20 years worth of psychology interns without benefit of having walked that path.Leads to multiple generations of psychologists culturally misappropriating traditional ways under the guise of "helping cure" Native people. And what's this bunk about medicine people being the ones to use drugs and alcohol because they have the "power" to do so?Not sure that has anything to do with traditional native american worldview, but may have something to do with some seriously unhealthy practices.Different native people have different practices and understanding of medicine.Making blanket pan-Indian generalizations that smack of new age ideas isn't healing. There's a certain feel of cultural voyeurism that is promoted in this book and it is not recommended.I was a Director of a behavioral health clinic within the urban American Indian population, and am a psychologist. There are many ways to promote healing in communities and among people, and many ways to train cross-culturally, and this is not a book, philosophy or trend I would recommend. ... Product Description
The best health practices are a synthesis of science and art. Surgery is a case in point. Although all competent surgeons follow scientific protocols, the best surgeons are masters of the art of surgery and produce better outcomes: e.g., smaller incisions; lower mortality rates. Psychotherapists are in exactly the same position. Psychotherapy is both a science and an art. There are excellent resources that convey information about empirically supported practices - the science of psychotherapy. However, this scientific information is incomplete in two important ways. It does not cover key matters that come up in psychotherapy (e.g., building a therapeutic relationship, resistance, termination), and it often does not fully cover the "art" of implementing these techniques, the nuances, the creative ways, the problem solving strategies when difficulties arise. This book is an attempt to have high profile, expert, "master" therapists discuss the art of handling these key issues. ... Read more

Product Description

There have been many recent developments in the research, theory, and practice of supervision in counseling, but few reliable resources are available for practitioners seeking to expand their knowledge in these areas. Culbreth and Brown have assembled a group of leading researchers, scholars, and professionals in the field to present a collection of chapters on the state of the art in clinical supervision. These chapters provide the reader with fresh approaches to core topics, such as multicultural competence, religion and spirituality, and the training of supervisors, as well as discussions of new areas of study. Alternative methods to conducting supervision are explored with expressive art techniques and the uses of narrative therapy and concepts of emotional intelligence. Triadic supervision and the use of the newest developments in technology are also considered. Current and future supervisors will no doubt find the innovative and informative strategies described in this book invaluable in their work with supervisees.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Practitioners are increasingly aware that religious persons present unique problems and challenges in therapy. Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is among the most widely practiced, highly structured and active directive approaches to treating emotional and behavioral problems. Introduced by Albert Ellis in the early 1950s, REBT is the original cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and its efficacy has been supported by hundreds of treatment outcome studies.

A uniquely belief-focused therapy, REBT is usually quite appealing to clients from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and other religious traditions, who respond favorably to REBT's focus on right belief, active engagement in the work of therapy, and reading/practice focused homework.

In this practical and user-friendly guide, the authors outline the congruence between the therapeutic approach of REBT and the presenting problems and concerns of religious persons. They describe an approach to reconciling the sacred traditions and beliefs of religious clients with the no nonsense techniques of REBT. They review the essential components of practice with religious clients--including assessment, diagnosis and problem formulation, disputation of irrational beliefs, and other REBT techniques, highlight the primary obstacles facing the therapist when treating religious clients, and offer many case examples from work with this important client population.

Mental health professionals from all backgrounds will benefit from the detailed yet manual-focused approach to helping religious clients overcome all forms of emotional distress.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise
Albert Ellis, the third author of this book, is well known for his atheism and attacks on religion even to me, a school teacher. He's notorious. Leaders of my church have used him as an example of the dangers for religious believers in the secular world of psychology! What a surprise to see his name on a book about counseling religious people! It is clear that Nielsen and Johnson have had a mellowing effect on Ellis (though he apparently maintains his atheistic views).Their book provides a clear description of this therapy and a well thought through explanation for why it will work and how to use it with religious people. The book is, evidently, intended for counselors, and I'm only an interested observer, but it gave me confidence that religious people like me can find an approach that will respect my beliefs and not feed me a bunch of psychobabble and mumbojumbo.I found myself thinking that this could work. Most heartening about the book was finding that these psychologists took an honest look at religious principles and were even willing to look at scripture to help their religious clients get better. ... Product Description
A step-by-step model for individualized case conceptualization

This innovative new guide addresses the essential question facing every therapist with a new client: How do I create a treatment plan that is the best match for my client? This unique resource provides a systematic method to integrate ideas, skills, and techniques from different theoretical approaches, empirical research, and clinical experience to create a case formulation that is tailor-made for the client.

Clinical Case Formulations is divided into three parts:
* Getting Started--provides an overview that sets forth a framework for case formulation and data gathering.
* 28 Core Clinical Hypotheses--offers a meta-framework embracing all theories, orientations, and mental health intervention models and presents clinical hypotheses within seven categories: Biological Hypotheses; Crisis, Stressful Situations, and Transitions; Behavioral and Learning Models; Cognitive Models; Existential and Spiritual Models; Psychodynamic Models; and Social, Cultural, and Environmental Factors. These hypotheses are combined and integrated to develop a coherent conceptualization of the client's problems.
* Steps to a Complete Case Formulation--provides a structured framework known as the Problem-Oriented Method (POM). Using the POM and integrating multiple hypotheses, the therapist learns how to think intelligently, critically, and creatively in order to develop a tailor-made treatment plan. A list of thirty-three standards for evaluating the application of this method is provided.

With this practical guide you will learn to conceptualize your clients' needs in ways that lead to effective treatment plans while finding the tools for troubleshooting when interventions fail to produce expected benefits. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent psychological reference
This text is an excellent resource for those who are interested in thinking about clinical case formulations using a theoretically integrated approach. It's also a useful as a guide in organizing treatment plans, using this view.

The person who gave this book one star sounds like a disgruntled student! This book is excellent for those seeking a reference or an introduction to case formulations.

This is a unique and useful text! You won't be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars An Obsolete Book with a Misguided Theory of Mind
Prof. Ingram does not believe in any of the therapeutic techniques or modalities that have been developed over the history of psychology.Rather she has created her own version of psychotherapy with its own approaches, orientation and jargon. There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of any taxonomy that purports to invent a new way of looking at the world. For one these initiatives have poor fit with actual clinical practice and more typically reflect the idiosyncratic personality of their originator. This tendency is particularly egregious when it ignores the entire history of psychotherapy, replacing it with proprietary alternative schematic.Prof. Ingram's pedantic style of case summary and evaluation is unique to her and not followed at any real-life psychology clinic. There are 28 "core clinical hypotheses."There are 33 "standards for evaluating case formulations."There are various rules specifying that at some points phrases must be used, at some points complete sentences, sometimes words have to be in bold, sometimes in parentheses, etc.In many instances Prof. Ingram's explanation of a clinical phenomenon (e.g. the concept of "empathy") simply is wrong, however, she is oblivious to her error because she is so embedded in the straight-jacket imposed by her cook-book approach.

In a way what Prof. Ingram is trying to do is to offer a psychotherapy version of the DSM.Even though it too is a schematized approach (to psychopathology) at least it has the advantage of being widely used and accepted. An attempt to devise a DSM-like approach for psychotherapy is conceptually flawed as any introductory class in philosophical psychology will tell you (see, e.g., John Searle's critique of this approach in "The Rediscovery of the Mind" and "Mind - A Brief Introduction").

In conclusion if you are considering purchasing this book I strongly urge you to read something else.If you are a teacher who has adopted it for a class (or a student whose teacher has adopted it for a class) then please consider changing your selection to something less intrusive and more useful from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I have been searching for a book like this for quite some time.It includes all the elements I have been wanting to include in my teaching of clinical psychology to post-graduate students. It has proven to be a very valuable find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fit the intervention to the client, not the other way around
This book is comprehensive, easy to read, and based on a sound theoretical and evidentiary base. It is hard to find a text that assists clinicians to bridge the gap between meeting the client and implementing a suitable intervention. This book not only does this, but does so in a way that is respectful of the client, the clinician, and the diversity of excellent clincial formulation frameworks available.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent guide to Tx planning
This is a how-to book that combines good clinical practice with the best of evidence-based treatment. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Research Methods in Clinical and Counselling Psychology presents a practical description of the research process, taking readers sequentially through the basic steps of a project: groundwork, measurement, design, analysis and interpretation. It also addresses essential background issues, such as the underlying philosophy of the various research methods and the socio-political issues that arise in doing research in service settings. Clinical and counselling research methodology is currently developing rapidly, and psychologists are expanding their repertoire of methods. In this book the authors present a balanced appraisal of both traditional and emergent methods. They re-affirm the scientistpractitioner model: that clinical and counselling psychologists have a dual role as both clinicians and researchers. The authors argue that research embraces a broad range of activities which can be incorporated into everyday professional practice. The book is aimed at students and professionals who want to conduct their own research and those who simply want to understand published research better. From a pre-publication review "I was very impressed with the scholarship and thoroughness of the book, and the authors are to be commended for all the work they have put into this manuscript. The book is an excellent overview of both the philosophical and practical issues of everyday research, and conveys the information necessary to confront and execute the task at hand." Product Description
Behavioral assessment is a psychological assessmentparadigm that emphasizes empirically supported, multimethod andmulti-informant assessment of specific, observable behaviors andcontemporaneous causal variables in the natural environment.
