Product Description
Feeding problems in children are relatively common, and often resolve themselves with little need for intervention. However, some categories of feeding problem are severe, persistent, and may be life-threatening without skilled involvement by professionals, including medical and surgical intervention. This revised and expanded Second Edition of Feeding Problems in Children deals with these severe and persistent problems, summarising the different kinds of work undertaken with children and their families in a number of countries. It first discusses the theoretical frameworks and perspectives, before moving on to explore clinical and applied research aspects of children's feeding. Finally, a comprehensive Clinical Practice Toolkit has been added to this edition, providing clinical models, checklists, model forms and reports.Featuring contributions from well-known international experts in the field, comprehensive and fully referenced, this book continues to be essential reading for all those practising or training in paediatrics in primary or secondary care, including paediatricians, GPs, gastroenterologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, paediatric nurses, health visitors and allied health professionals.'Given the multi-cultural composition of today's communities, the decision by Drs Southall and Martin to include a chapter on cultural aspects to feeding was most insightful. This book, with its comprehensive coverage of the issues and a practical Toolkit with examples of materials from a multi-disciplinary practice, makes an essential contribution to the education of frontline clinicians dealing with feeding problems in young children.' - from the Foreword by William B CristFrom reviews of the First Edition: 'A detailed guide, extensively referenced'FAMILY MEDICINE'A useful addition to a hospital library or multi-disciplinary paediatric library' PHYSIOTHERAPY JOURNAL ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Child abuse. Implications for child development
This is the second edition of a small, but important book on the implications of child abuse for child development and psychopathology. It is written by David A Wolfe, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. He has been very active in the field of child abuse and neglect with several books to his name, like Children of battered women, Preventing physical and emotional abuse of children, Alternatives to violence and Abnormal child psychology. This book is part of the Sage Series on Developmental Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry prepared by experts in clinical child psychiatry, psychology, development and related disciplines. The focus is on the diagnosis, assesment, treatment and prevention of problems in developmental psychopathology that arise in the period from infancy through adolescence. The book is devided into six chapters: What is child maltreatment ?, Normal and abnormal child rearing patterns, A developmental perspective of the abused child, Unraveling the causes with theory, background and multidimentional influences and the last chapter on Prevention and treatment strategies. Since the first edition of this book (1987) there has been an explosion in child abuse research and therefore also more knowledge and background to understand the mechanisms involved. This is taken into account in this book, but also the fact that the author in the meantime had three children of his own has made this book very important for professionals working with abused and neglected children. ... Product Description
Prejudice and, in particular, ethnic awareness in children is a controversial topic, arousing strong opinions in professionals and parents. Many liberal-minded researchers would like to think children in the right environment will be free from prejudice. As this book shows, the evidence is that because of their cognitive limitations, children are almost inevitably prejudiced up to the age of about seven. This has led to a literature on the subject which is too often self-serving or confused. Now, this book provides a complete up-to-date survey of the topic. It explains the conceptual and developmental differences between ethnic awareness, identity and attitudes. Scientific and lay theories are discussed and measured against recent findings. Her conclusions are that up to the age of about seven, children are almost inevitably prejudiced and that after that age their attitudes are open to influence. Parents and teachers have a key role to play in shaping childrens' outlook and behaviour. ... Read more

Product Description
Based on the Hospice Foundation of America's second annual teleconference, this book explores three basic themes in children's grief. Firstly, it maintains that children are always developing; therefore their understanding of death and their reactions to illness and loss are also multifaceted and constantly undergoing change. Secondly, children grieve in ways that are both different from and similar to adults. While they may need different therapeutic approaches from their elders, each loss is different and the grief experience will be affected by many of the same factors that affect adults. Thirdly, it holds that they need significant support as they grieve.; Talking to children about loss and and illness is too important to wait until a crisis; rather, it is essential to provide opportunities to discuss loss in times that are not so Emotionally Laden. This Book Aims To Demonstrate That Open Communication between parents and children will lead to skills and understanding that are essential to the child for coping with loss and reaffirming that death is part of the process of living. ... Product Description
Christiane Brems, an experienced clinician, supervisor, and educator, presents a metatheoretical yet practical guide to working with children ages 3 to 12 years. She draws heavily on developmental, interpersonal, family systems, and self-psychological schools of thought and integrates the core components of all of these approaches in a clear and concise manner. She stresses the need for intensive assessment to precede conceptualization and treatment planning so that treatment techniques are dictated by the needs of each child and family. Brems has contoured the third edition to meet the practical needs and expectations of students and practitioners. Divided among four sections, the chapters follow the logical development of clinicians, mirroring the natural flow of work with children--from the practitioner's self-exploration, to learning about special aspects of children (such as diversity and development), to awareness about the special needs and demands of children as related to environmental, legal, and ethical issues. Brems prepares clinicians to discover their own personal traits that may facilitate or hinder their work with children. She walks child therapists and counselors through the initial stages of intake, assessment, and conceptualization. The material on assessment instruments is thoroughly updated; discussions refer to the latest versions of instruments, and if new instruments emerged that meet one of the purposes deemed essential to child treatment, they are included. The text contains case examples, each illustrating a specific therapeutic technique. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Winner is a winner!
If you are working with or parenting a highly to profoundly gifted child, you should read this book. The case studies are fascinating. Winner seamlessly weaves together anecdotes and information from Terman,Piaget,Kohlberg, and many others whose names will be familiar to those who have studied child development. Myths and Realities is absolutely stuffed with information on truly amazing children. I especially enjoyed the photos of children's art in the section on gifted artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift
Have you ever had the feeling that you were different from your classmates-- that although you were in the advanced classes, you just didn't feel like you should have been there? Did you find yourself frustrated and bored because your teachers were explaining gravity, and you add to her lesson by talking about centrifugal force, and the teacher gives you a blank look? And were you one of those kids who teachers just didn't know what to do with?

I am a student getting her Master's in Early Childhood Education, and we discussed Gifted Education in our Special Needs class. I chose this book to used as a basis for a project because it seemed to be very interesting.

Not only did it inspire me to want to pursue further studies in Gifted Education, I finally recognized students like me in the book. I was not a prodigy, but I was gifted, and mislabeled by my teachers as "easily distracted," "uncooperative," and just plain mysterious. I was not scoring well in Math, so I could not be placed into the classes for gifted (whereas I tested on a senior level in Verbal abilities in the 4th grade), and so I was bored. This book helped me to understand who I was (am), and my persona was less of a mystery. My self-confidence has increased dramatically and has helped me to recognize who I am.

If you have a child in your class that you suspect may be gifted, read this book. If you think you have a child who has not been identified as gifted or whom you think may not be in classes that are at his or her instructional level, read this book. And if you are just curious, and are like me, read this book. I swear you will feel much better when you do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nine myths about giftedness
Gifted Children. Myths and Realities by Ellen Winner. New York: Basic Books,1996.
This book addresses nine myths about giftedness including the myth of global giftedness, the myth regarding the driving parent, the myth regarding glowing psychological health, and the myth that all gifted children become creative adults. Subsequent chapters deal in depth with each of the myths. This is not a book for a newcomer to the field, but someone who has some background, parent or educator.

5-0 out of 5 stars a first and last book on this subject to read
For a few years now, this is the basic book I push on friends and others who want to know how those professionals who care, but who aren't pretentious and don't promise to be fix-its, see giftedness.

Such professionals want to tell you how to identify a gifted child with high confidence, and also how a gifted child differs from the general population in the course of a usual childhood.

Winner does this well. It's hard to ask for more from a basic book.

Rather than find another book on raising gifted children, one should look for those gifted adults who meet Winner's criteria, decide on their trustworthyness, and ask for their help.

Then you'll be setting up a pattern the child can follow for life, and with a next generation of gifted children. An extended family-led pattern.

To check if Winner's criteria are met, a simple trick is to teach a child to play chess. It's a game that rewards precocity, one's own drummer, and a rage to master very immediately.

Networks of kids who play chess have many kids who satisfy Winner's criteria, whose parents might want to share tips.

A small caveat to the book is that it should be updated for the Internet, which spans across school systems, to connect child to child, parent to parent, and child to adult, at low cost.

The Internet may not be better than libraries below a certain age.But after that age, a gifted child will find it on his or her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of the Study of Giftedness
"Gifted Children: Myths ad Realities," by Ellen Winner, is an excellent overview of what is currently known about gifted children, including their heredity, information about their early childhood, their learning patterns, their educations, and many more things. I recommend this as an introduction to the study of gifted children, or to anyone who wants to acquire a basic knowledge and understading of ths topic.
There is a good balance in this book between individual examples and case studies and more general theories and studies. The author makes her points of view on this topic manifest in many parts of this book; it is not a dry textbook that pretends to be equally accepting of all beliefs.
It also has a marvelous bibliography. I recommend to readers reading the bibliography of every chapter that you found interesting. ... Read more

Allen review the empirical support for four major programs, as well as some more popular programs that lack strong empirical support. Throughout this review they teach readers how to identify the best research in parent training, how to prepare for parent training sessions, and finally show how to translate this research into everyday practice.

Parents usually are the most influential people in a child's life. So when child problems like noncompliance, hyperactivity, sleep problems, feeding problems, toileting problems, academic problems, and adolescent-parent conflict arise it is important for parents to take on the primary role in their resolution. This book explains what parents are taught when collaborating with a psychologist or counselor and how they are taught effectively. Practitioners, whether they are experienced, new to parent training, or students of the field, will find this book to be a valuable resource for taking interventions developed under tightly controlled research conditions and adapting them to the conditions of day-to-day practice, where resources are more limited and presenting problems are often more complex. ... Product Description

David Foulkes is one of the international leaders in the empirical study of children's dreaming, and a pioneer of sleep laboratory research with children. In this book, which distills a lifetime of study, Foulkes shows that dreaming as we normally understand it--active stories in which the dreamer is an actor--appears relatively late in childhood. This true dreaming begins between the ages of 7 and 9. He argues that this late development of dreaming suggests an equally late development of waking reflective self-awareness.

Foulkes offers a spirited defense of the independence of the psychological realm, and the legitimacy of studying it without either psychoanalytic over-interpretation or neurophysiological reductionism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, accessible
This book questions the very deep assumptions made about dreaming by both psychologists and members of the folk at large.Apparently, according to the best available evidence -- in the form of two very detailed studies of children over decades -- dreaming requires a relatively sophisticated cognitive achievement that takes place gradually and much later than people assume.Four and five year olds, Foulkes finds reason to believe, almost never dream -- and when and if they do, their dreams are much more static and absent of human agency or emotional content than adult dreams are.

"But wait!" you say."My son or daughter sometimes wakes up from scary dreams!"Maybe. But, and here is the point: your day-to-day activities offer only anecdotal evidence, subject to various interpretations and possible biases; this is a psychological question, and psychological methodologies are those best-equipped to answer it.That's what this book is about.

Foulkes outlines his methodology and results in clear layman's terms; I am not a psychologist, but I found his descriptions and explanations compelling and lucid.Anyone interested in a real understanding of what dreaming is -- and not just what people think it is -- would do well to buy and read this book.Highly recommend.

(I should add one caveat: in addition to the fascinating and plausible conclusions Foulkes draws about dreaming, he also advertises some striking claims about consciousness. These, I think, are much less developed and convincing. But perhaps I merely misunderstood.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good insight into Piaget.
Piaget's theories are complex and hard to understand without interpretation. This is exactly the book I needed as it was advertised. Often Piaget's words were of his own coining...since he was a pioneer in child development....or he uses different
definitions not available in a dictionary. Also, this book uses examples from children's literature to illustrate points. Excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
At last, Piaget's concepts are presented in an enjoyable, memorable manner. For decades, teachers have drilled themselves on mastering the concepts of this famous psychologist as they diligently sought to help children make the most of their capacities to learn. This author explains many of Jean Piaget's ideas by using examples from children's literature. It's even illustrated with cartoons. Writers for children have used this book to help them connect their writing to memories of how they thought as children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Piaget
This is a very nice book that uses children's literature, popular comics, and very good writing to demystify Piaget for beginners.I tried to read parts of Piaget's How a Child Thinks and had to put it down. The authors recognize the difficulty in reading Piaget's original works and have written this book for non psychology students. This was a very useful book for a research paper on Piaget for a special education graduate course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clever use of comics and stories for illustration
Piaget is the most influential figure in child psychology ever known. However, it can be rather daunting to plough through his monumental works. So we have books like A Piaget Primer that come to our rescue-books that help to explain the concepts in simpler, more reader-friendly terms. Of course, we cannot expect such books to do justice to the scope and breadth of the original works, but for a thin volume like A Piaget Primer, it has done reasonably well to introduce the most essential concepts of Piaget's theory on child development. Among the essential ideas are assimilation and accommodation, various stages of development, play, language development, number concept, and moral development. There is also a last chapter on the implications and applications of Piagetian theory in the education of our young. What I find most impressive about this volume is its witty use of comics such as Peanut and stories such as Alice in the Wonderland to illustrate many of the confusing concepts. Wish I had this book when I was doing my psychology course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
The author provides very clear explanations of Piaget's theory of thought and play. Complete with comic strips about children, this book is a must for new teachers who are learning about Piaget and also for parents who donot know how children think and learn thru' play. You won't want to put thebook down after picking it up, because the contents are so simple yetinteresting. ... Read more
