5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Treat!
I enjoy books that explore disagreements in science and skepticism in general. I always learn more about the subjects involved than in any other books. This short book describes the debate over the last few years of the value of psychoanalysis, and then goes about defending it.The arguments are fairly stated then systematically and graciously destroyed. The misuse of science and history is the culprit, as always. The descriptions of Frued's work as "Unscientific" are shown to be appeals of rhetoric and romanticism. But most facinating is the detailed story of successes and failures of Frued in coming up with these amazing ideas. The points are closely argued and patiently explained. ... Written with the American psychological community in mind, The Subject of Lacan provides an accessible introduction to the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan. Product Description
At a time when scores of seemingly incompatible theories and methods are competing for ascendancy in psychotherapy, one could argue that the crucial intellectual and moral dilemmas of this field are largely philosophical in nature. Yet most psychotherapists are never formally exposed to philosophical thinking during their training years or subsequent careers. Between Conviction and Uncertainty: Philosophical Guidelines for the Practicing Psychotherapist makes a significant contribution by bridging this gap. Jerry Downing examines and clarifies the philosophical context--epistemological, scientific, moral--within which psychotherapy functions. He demonstrates the necessity of maintaining a creative tension--a dialectic--between conviction and uncertainty in the work of the therapist and, more importantly, he explores in depth how this might be done. Further, he presents these sometimes complex ideas in prose that is truly reader-friendly. This book should appeal to all practitioners, supervisors, and students/trainees who find value in reflecting on the nature of psychotherapeutic practice, as well as to readers with theoretical or philosophical interests in psychotherapy. ... Product Description
The metaethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas challenges Western egocentrism by describing the self as egoic yet nevertheless ethically called to transcend its own obsessions, compulsions, and addictions, and to respect and serve others. While power is powerful and weakness is weak, power can sabotage itself, and the weakness of others has power to command our attention and service. Levinas makes distinctions that offer psychology the basis for an alternative paradigm open to paradox. In The Paradox of Power and Weakness, George Kunz shows how the analyses of hagiography, cynicism, and limits on altruistic behavior by radical altruism contribute to this psychology of ethical responsibility for social sciences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars In a word: Superb
As both a clinical psychologist and an individual deeply interested in those attributes that make us truly human, I have to say that this book is one of the best I have read in many years.Dr. Kunz offers not only an easy to understand synthesis of what is arguably the most important work by Levinas, but cogently argues that psychology could benefit greatly by incorporating his ideas.I thoroughly loved the book and very highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kunz uses Levinas to radically open up the way we live.
Kunz's book is a wonderful read without losing the thickness of Levinas'sideas. It answered the question I've struggled with for years, if you'rehappy and complete, why act? He makes a clear case for moving the center ofexistance off the ego and onto the other. We act because need in the faceof the other calls us to act. In the face of that need we have no choicebut to act, even if that act is to turn coldly from those in need.

Heargues for a new psychology based not on the ego as the center of theworld, but on the need of the other as the center of the world.

This bookradically opened up my way of being with the ideas of Levinas, and I can'trecommend it highly enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Great Book!!! Have A Wonderful Life With This Stuff!!
This is one of the best books ever written because it explains so clearly the reasons for behavior and how to effectively manipulate any behavior including problem behavior. This book contains the answers for all the problems troubling mankind. Reinforcement is the closest thing to magic that has ever been found in regard to controlling behavior and therefore controlling people. This is very very powerful technology and its clear why so many feared Skinner and his ilk; reinforcement is so effective at solving behavior problems.

The teaching/child abuse industry, the legal pyscho-dope-medical industry, the street dope industry, the political bosses, the assisted living industry, the lawyer industry, the corrections industry, supervisors/slave drivers, junk food industry, nicotine and alcohol industry and all other similar parasites that thrive, prosper and depend upon not people not solving problem behaviors and financially enjoy the misery of hundreds of millions of people with problem behaviors have to hope that the technology of reinforcement will never be properly applied to solve those problem behaviors. If reinforcement is properly applied, those parasites will have to find honest employment or become extinct.

In this book you will find the basic simple answers to any behavioral questions that are troubling you. However be WARNED: If you're one of the many parasites, like a professional punisher a.k.a. public fool system child abuser a.k.a. teacher or principal, you will probably not like the answers to educational behavioral problems contained in this book. You parasites will find out that you are the problem rather than your victims and that your behavior and the behavior of your industry creates and maintains more and more victims. If you are a parasite that wants to give up abusing children, old people, "criminals", family members, friends, neighbors, employees, etc. then congratulations, get this wonderful book and get ready to have the most fun ever by helping yourself and others to solve behavior problems and have a really wonderful life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Consequence
Reinforcement is the most powerful concept in psychology. Understand it and you will have a much better understanding of why people (including yourself) behave as they do. You will also be able to use reinforcement to improve your dealings with others: your children, spouse, parents, coworkers, neighbors, students.

Reinforcement is derived from the law of effect, the idea that the tendency to perform a particular kind of behavior depends on the effects that behavior has had in the past. When the effects or consequencesof a behavior strengthen it, we say the behavior has been reinforced.

Reinforcement may seem too simple a concept to justify an entire book, even a fairly short book such as this one. But while the basic concept of reinforcement is simple, its implementation is complicated. That is probably one reason why there are so many misconceptions about it. One of Flora's goals is to correct some of these "myths," such as the idea that reinforcement is synonymous with bribery (it's very different), that it undermines intrinsic motivation (it's more likely to enhance it), that it reduces creativity (it's one of the best ways to increase it). Flora also illustrates how reinforcement has been put to good use in a variety of settings - homes, schools, clinics, hospitals, correctional facilities, etc.

Flora's writing is not as fluid as it might be, but it's far less stuffy and technical than the journals on which it draws, so any college student should be able to read the book without difficulty. Reading it is particularly likely to be beneficial to those for whom managing others is part of their daily work, especially parents, teachers, and company executives. It would also serve well as a text in education and management courses. Read the book, and get the power of reinforcement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial?
The book description for Mr. Flora's book is one of the reasons why we as nation are still struggling to teach our children well.It is baffling that we have the key to unlocking so much human potential, yet we withhold it for fear of some shadowy determinism which we think will run our lives.Reinforcement does not limit an individual, it profides greater competency, which ultimately gives the individual more choice.I feel that everyone will gain from a reading of this book, and it should be required reading for all teachers. ... Product Description
In Taming the Beast, Henry and Rita Herlong explain their twelve alternative steps of personal regeneration. These steps are based on an original, comprehensive theory of addiction that addresses treatment on three levels - the subconscious level of fantasy and belief, the superconscious level of intuition, and most importantly the unconscious level, where old pain is held. The Herlongs present dynamic modalities for each level, suggesting ways to select therapies familiar with each. The unconscious is addressed by releasing old traumas from the body with different forms of physical therapy, or bodywork. Intuition is developed using astrological techniques for guidance and insight during treatment. The subconscious is managed with clearing techniques for discharging past conditioning. Taming the Beast is a conceptual guidebook for working out of addiction, whether to substances, people or activities. It's for thinking people with the desire to take a third path out of addiction - an alternative to traditional counseling and recovery work. --- from book's back cover ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal drug pushers
Dr. Ganz has the credentials to speak loud and strong in exposing the deceptive world of psychoanalysis. One of the greastest threats in our society today is the proliferation of legally prescribed mood and mind altering drugs. They do far more harm than good. Dr. Ganz shows that there are far better alternatives that actually set people free from their illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's View
If you really believe 2 Tim 3:16-17 and 2 Pet 1:3-4, but are confused by the church's approach to counseling then this book is for you.Ganz provides a great insider's view to the problem with the integrationist philosophy.Let Christ be magnified!

1-0 out of 5 stars Anarchic approach to christian counselling
This book is so typical of it's day and when it was written. I hate to think that people might still have this viewpoint & that it's all about drumming in the christianity component of healing in total ignorance of the benefits of psychology and what it can truthfully offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian/Pastoral Counselling and its place in healing mind and spirit
At least with a psychologist who is licensed one has a recourse. Often in therapy people who work with a counsellor whose values conflict with their own may find themselves confused and distorted. The reason why Christian or pastoral counselling works for some is that it as a discipline is designed to heal mind and soul. Same can be said for Buddhist and Jewish pastoral care. Secular psychology has gotten way too far out as the New Age movement influences many approaches to counselling. Then there is the business model of needing clients for income. Both factors play into the creation of dependance to keep one employed. When the soul heals it is incredible what happens. Besides ... if prayer turned around St. Augustine of Hippo ... it can turn around probably alot more people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intentions, poorly argued.
I was initially impressed by the topics to be covered in this book however found that few areas were well discussed.Whilst myself exploring the differences between modern psychology and Nouthetic counseling, this book failed to completely discuss the areas detailed in its contents.I was particularly disappopinted with the chapter "The myth of intergration" which had very little to do with intergrating modern psychology with Biblical concepts.Examples were biased and information appeared to be delievered without the thoroughness that such texts require for today's critical minds. As this review is titled, I believe the author had good intentions, however with exposure to Jay Adams and the like for his work, this book offers very little useful information. ... Product Description
This volume is intended for a wide audience: parents, teachers, clergy, counselors and other mental health personnel, and law enforcers. It is the first study to address the problems of adolescent Satanism from a psychological viewpoint. Moriarty critically evaluates the philosophy of Satanism through a review of The Satanic Bible, and further appraises the causes of Satanism by examining the role of power, ritual and dualistic thinking in young peoples' lives. In addition, Moriarty evaluates how communication patterns and parenting styles impact on a young person's vulnerability to become involved in Santanism. This is also the first book to describe the relationship between Satanism and suicide. Finally, it closes with ten practical suggestions for parents and others that will lead to effective prevention. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star, Deserved
The author ignores his own writing, really.

He starts off explaining his first encounter with a Satanist. He describes a self assured, confident individual. Not the whiny goth or the hapless victim. Not the social misfit who gets picked on and can't do anything about it and just "hates everybody."

He ignores whole portions of the Satanic Bible, and whole concepts. I've seen it. I've broken it down. Compared comments from this book and the Satanic Bible. Its assessment is totally inaccurate. This isn't just me complaining. The author contradicts direct statements by Anton LaVey!

Of course, it does also ignore the other works of Satanic literature. Granted, this may have been "before" all that, but I doubt it. Amazon says 1992. So there's no excuse for that either.

Its assessment is largely of teen "Satanists" (used so because I doubt whether the teens he evaluated were actually Satanists). Ignoring the many adults that are Satanists today.

I do think it deserves one star. It has a grain of intelligence. There are people who try to claim Satanism for totally the wrong reasons, as he identifies. But to suggest that all Satanists fit into those four types is foolish.

So? Largely inaccurate where Satanism is concerned. About teens? Somewhat accurate. But there are too many generalizations for this book to be that useful to anybody but paranoid Christians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Argument Against Satanism...From a Psychologist!!!
NOTE: This is not a book written by some "Christian Psychologist" that can simply be dismissed by some.
The essence of this book is what common sense knows : Satanism is a religion for anti-social misfits. Too many people try to treat Satanism as an equal and viable religion along side the world's religions. The Complete Idiot's Guide To Religions on the Internet for example has an entire chapter on Satanism, while ignoring dozens of Christian denominations...any of which would probably have ten times the number of Satanists in the world. If you look at the Satanic Bible on this site, there are hundreds of comments supporting it. A case of a goth being beat up in New York is being treated as a hate crime because the victim was a Satanist. It's time for a reality check, and time to stop treating Satanism as something normal people get involved in.

While geared more for Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and mental health professionals, members of the clergy, law enforcement, and parents will benefit tremendously from the book. The book lists and refutes 7 myths of Satanism, namely, you can't be happy and be religious, man is naturally violent, good and evil are reversed, satanism is now, satanism will make you powerful, and you have to chose between religion and sex.

The book lists the 4 types that become Satanists, the pseudo intellectual, the angry individual, the psychotic, and the impulsive suicidal type. It also list the appropriate treatment for each.

Product Description

Depression is commonly thought of as a biological disorder best treated with antidepressant medications. Pharmaceutical companies and many experts promote this view as established in scientific fact. Here, Leventhal and Martell argue that there is scant actual scientific evidence for this view, and that the issue is open to considerable question. They maintain that there is very little known—they call the evidence woefully weak—regarding the role of biology in depression. Marketing by drug producers has not only led the public to accept dubious claims and over-value antidepressants, but has also led medical doctors to prescribe them excessively. Leventhal and Martell argue that the effectiveness of psychological therapy has strong scientific support in the treatment of anxiety and depression, and it is safer and results in less frequent relapse. This book will help consumers decide which treatment is best for them. It includes a list of questions to ask before accepting a prescription for antidepressant medication.

Readers will find this book helpful in understanding the controversy surrounding the widespread prescription and use of antidepressants. It traces the history and science behind the pharmaceutical treatment of depression, and it presents, in accessible language, information that will empower readers to make the best choices possible regarding the treatment of their own or their loved ones' feelings of depression and anxiety. The audience for this book includes those who are depressed and considering professional help, those concerned about health care and the services offered in the mental health field, and doctors or mental health professionals who may wish to reconsider the basis for treatments they are recommending to patients. Students and scholars in psychology, clinical psychology, public health, social work, and psychiatry will also find this of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes where few books so clearly have gone before
Any college-level health collection, especially those strong in mental health concerns, must have THE MYTH OF DEPRESSION AS DISEASE: LIMITATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG TREATMENT: it goes where few books so clearly have gone before, arguing that there's little actual scientific evidence for treating depression as a biological disorder to be treated with drugs. Indeed, the authors say, there is very little known about the role of biology in depression; but marketing by pharmaceutical companies has perpetuated the myth of chemical imbalance and treatments to benefit their bottom lines. Therapy is under-explored in contrast, and should be one of many alternatives to drug therapies: that's the hard-hitting contention of THE MYTH OF DEPRESSION AS DISEASE, which should earn much classroom discussion as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Reading
This is an impressive book. It will open a lot of eyes, especially eyes that watch ads for antidepressive medication on television. The authors wrote the book for people who feel depressed and need more information and for professional caretakers who want a better understanding of treatments for depression.

The authors argue that there is little reason to go along with the theory that defects in brain chemistry cause depression. When a person is locked in depression, it may well be that his brain chemicals change. However, the authors can't find evidence for the widespread belief, fostered by pharmaceutical companies and biological psychiatrists, that depression is a disease caused by defects in the brain. Some people may indeed inherit a susceptibility, possibly via brain chemistry, to develop depression, but without an interaction with life experiences the predisposition would be unlikely to affect them.

Antidepressant drugs, obviously needed say the pharmaceutical companies if depression is a disease of brain chemistry, can be shown to have a moderate therapeutic effect. However, the authors, based on reviews of a large number of placebo-controlled research trials, found that most of the positive effect could be attributed to a placebo reaction-another eye opener.

The authors view depression, not as a brain disease, but rather as a mood and behavioral disorder resulting from adverse life situations. "It's Not Your Brain; It's Your Life" is their title for a section of Chapter 3. Depression might result from the death of a spouse or the loss of a vocation where the person fails to find a replacement, or, more commonly, from the long-term avoidance of risks of pursuing deeply-held life goals or intimate relationships. Avoidance, manifested as isolation, sleeping, drinking, procrastination, and the like, can be motivated by fears of failure, rejection, humiliation, shame, etc. Behavior therapy and cognitive behavior therapy are described with considerable clarity as therapeutic treatments for depression. The focus of this therapy is replacing the avoidance behavior with effective coping behaviors. Among the most interesting parts of the book is the section in Chapter 5 describing five cases of depression where a "double arrow" diagram points to the crucial step of avoidance that maintains the disorder.

In reviewing the treatment literature, the authors find that these types of psychotherapy are at least as effective as medications in treating depression in the short-term but are more effective in the long-term because the relapse rate is lower after treatment is discontinued. Apparently, psychotherapy is more likely than medications to "stick."

A shortcoming of the book is that some sections are hard to read. These sections, probably intended for a professional audience, seem long and complicated. My suggestion to the reader is to feel free to scan or skip. On the other hand, I found other sections, particularly Chapter 5 describing the behavioral approach to understanding and treating depression, were interesting and easy to read. Three appendices provide practical advice on questions to ask before accepting a prescription, how to find a behavioral therapist, and questions to ask a potential therapist. I think this book is well worth the effort required to read it. ... Read more

Product Description
The book Energy Tapping was a joint development of Fred Gallo and Harry Vincenzi.Any statements to the contrary in print or on the web are false.

Energy psychology is a scientifically validated body of research and core set of treatment techniques that conceptualizes thoughts, feelings, emotions, and other psychological phenomena as manifestations of energy working though the system of the human body. If some psychological phenomenon is causing pain, distress, or a lack of function to an individual, the somatic techniques of energy psychology work to disrupt the flow of energy causing that phenomenon.

One of the more common techniques in the energy psychology repertoire is called energy tapping, a practice, similar to acupressure, that involves manipulating and tapping certain points along the body's energy meridians to influence psychological events. In this new book, author Fred Gallo applies energy psychology techniques specifically to recovering from acute trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Some techniques in this book are adapted from Energy Tapping by Fred Gallo and Harry Vincenzi.

Energy Tapping for Trauma offers a concise overview of how trauma affects us and why certain aspects of traumatic experience can linger as post-traumatic stress. The book adapts energy psychology techniques into simple, effective strategies for "short-circuiting" the emotional problems associated with trauma. Throughout, the book advocates for a balanced and sensible "whole-person" approach to dealing with and recovering from a traumatic event.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read book on stress reduction
Brilliantly simple!Contradiction? Not at all.Dr. Gallo offers an amazing storehouse of easy to understand techniques and strategies in Energy Tapping for Trauma. For example, when tapping the collarbone spot or the side of the hand accompanied with a choice of words, such as an affirmation, stressors are often completely released.Sometimes these stressors are long-term; and in what seems like a split-moment, the emotion associated with the stressor is gone after applying one of the tapping protocols described in this must-read book.Ten years ago, I was a skeptical of such methods.Today, I am a strong believer in the body's ability to heal through energy tapping and energy psychology. My conversion is due in a large part to reading Energy Tapping: How to Rapidly Eliminate Anxiety, Depression, Cravings, and More Using Energy Psychology (also available on Amazoo.com) by Dr. Gallo and his associate and Energy Tapping for Trauma by Dr. Gallo. As a stress reduction treatment practitioner and researcher, I believe that Dr. Gallo has captured in Energy Tapping for Trauma, a most comprehensive and user-friendly application of energy tapping.Energy Tapping for Trauma is a well integrated, clearly written, and comprehensive resource that you will, like myself, return to again and again for wise counsel.Treat yourself to a copy of this self-empowering treatment guide.Once you do, you will find yourself purchasing additional copies of this valuable resource for friends.Indeed, "keep on tapping," activate your body's healing chemicals, and give thanks for having come across this practical, scientifically based guide to rapid relief from all kinds of stress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Trauma
This is more than a book on self-treatment for trauma and painful memories; it's a great book on self-treatment for trauma and painful memories! And the techniques work for so much more.Do you feel depressed? Try emotional stress relief or the eight-step process. Are you held down because on a deprived childhood? Try the unified self process. Do you feel that you're not making the most of your life and want to manifest the very best? Use the best possible self and gratitude processes. There's something for practically everyone here. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs to Own this Book
This well-written book is packed with a variety of how-to approaches to combat trauma. It truly demonstrates it is not necessary for trauma to run you, but for you to take hold of the effects of trauma and treat it with simple, effective techniquee. Further, the techniques are also helpful for any emotional upset.

I have marked this book with many tabs because there are so many points worth reviewing. I have recommended this book to my closest colleagues and clients as well. I have incorporated the Eight Step Process into my practice with terrific results. Essentially it is a new way of thinking to gently stimulate acupoints for profound emotional release.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are all these reviews written by other Authors wanting to promote their own work??
Ok, so, I'm looking at buying this book. But, all the comments and reviews seem to be biased. They seem to be written by other authors, who then, promote their own books.Has anyone read this book besides friends of the author??? I'd like some REAL feedback, from a REAL person with PTSD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Naturopathy's Science-Ejected Vitalism Premise, 2008:
This naturopath's book clearly states the essential sectarian premise of naturopathy, vitalism --

a PROFOUNDLY science-ejected concept, according to the National Center For Science Education and the National Association of Biology Teachers: "nonscientific notions such as geocentricism, flat earth, creationism, young earth, astrology, psychic healing and vitalistic theory, therefore, cannot legitimately be taught, promoted, or condoned as science in the classroom [c1995]" --

per:

"the principles of naturopathic medicine [...] that distinguish naturopathic medicine from other medical approaches [...] include the following tenets [p.007...#1] nature is a powerful source of healing. This principle is based on the idea of vitalism, which holds that each of us has an innate life force that regulates the repair and regeneration of the mind, body and spirit. The naturopath's role is to facilitate this process [p.008]."

Caveat emptor.
