Extractions: Follow-up 2. John Vincent from Vancouver, Canada writes on 2/23/99: In response to your question the label reads: "Jean Goldkette's Orchestra" verbatim. Under that is written "Harold Stokes, Director" and under that "Vocal refrain by Van Fleming". The flip side is a song by Nat Shilkret. As you are probably aware "Clementine" was Victor 20994-B (at least that's the one I own) so I take it that "Sweethearts On Parade" (the album in question) was recorded later with Harold Stokes filling in for Goldkette (?). The record was purchased in Michigan. I have read no where of the Goldkette band re-forming after "Clementine". I suppose it could be a super early Casa Loma band but I really have no idea. HELP!

June Haver: Movie Star entitled SKYLINE SERENADE; the second with tommy Dorsey was which involved the storyof a young lovelorn pianist. to Las Vegas and marry Jimmy zito, a musician http://www2.powercom.net/~fredmac/jn.html
Extractions: June Haver was born June 19,1926,in Rock Island Illinois as Beverly Jean Stovenour, the daughter of Fred and Marie Stovenour. She was the middle sister of three girls, Dorothy the older and Evelyn the younger(see family picture at right). Her mother and father would divorce and June would adopt the family name of her stepfather, Bert Haver. The breakup of her mother and father would have a profound effect on June but that story comes later. To say that June was a precocious child may be one of the greatest understatements of all time. Her beauty and talents were evident from the very start. Her sister Evelyn recalls: When we were little, I can remember her flouncing around in ruffles, and the neighbors cooing over her. "Just like a Dresden Doll!" they used to say.... [but] when she finally dislodged herself from Mother's side, I found she was a small terror. She played the best game of sandlot baseball in the neighborhood, and whenever she went to St. Margaret's Church, she took a short cut by hopping the ties of a railroad trestle that stretched high over the river. ...She's a very self assured girl, my sister. June's parents would soon learn how self assured June was at the ripe old age of five when her parents received a mysterious bill in the mail from June's kindergarten teacher. It seems that one day her teacher had made an announcement that piano lessons were now being offered. June signed up without receiving permission from her parents. Quite surprised, her parents asked for a selection from little June expecting a rousing rendition of TWINKLE, TWINKLE, LITTLE STAR. June sat down at the piano to tickle the ivories with a complicated Haydn selection. After that, there was little doubt that the lessons would be paid for without question. Now June spent her spare time at the piano keys while the other children were busying themselves with stickball and hopscotch. June soon became such an accomplished pianist that at the age of seven, she played with Eugene Gossens and the Cincinnati Symphony.
Skitch Henderson him in (to replace the band's pianist, Joe Bushkin Frank Sinatra's most successfulrecordings with tommy Dorsey and top arrangers like Torrie zito, Dick Reynolds http://www.spaceagepop.com/henderso.htm
Extractions: Home Listener's Guide The Songs Who's Who ... Search Skitch Henderson S kitch Henderson is best remembered for his stints as the bandleader on "The Tonight Show" in the 1950s and 1960s. He signed on as performer and musical director when NBC started "Tonight" with Steve Allen in 1954, then returned in the 1960s when Johnny Carson took over. Some viewers probably remember him more for his distinctive taste in clothes (never seen without a vest) than his music. Henderson started out as a hard-score classical musician, studying piano, then conducting with Fritz Reiner, and composition with Arnold Schoenberg, and attending both Juilliard and the school of music at UCLA. But he was smart enough to see where real money was being made, and he switched to popular music, working in radio and theater orchestras before accompanying the young Judy Garland on one of her first tours. He settled in Los Angeles and joined the staff of RCA Victor, working as an orchestrator and pianist. Arranger Axel Stordahl brought him in (to replace the band's pianist, Joe Bushkin ) to play on some of Frank Sinatra's most successful recordings with Tommy Dorsey. When World War Two started, he decided to join the Army Air Corps, where he became a pilot and fighter pilot and flew throughout the war.
Jazz Institute Of Chicago When Dodo Marmarosa was pianist with the band we roomed together. this small airportat Springfield and call the band manager, Louis zito, in St tommy's furious http://jazzinstituteofchicago.org/jazzgram/people/defranco-voce.asp
Extractions: Buddy DeFranco interview with Steve Voce, Nice 1981 Buddy DeFranco has the melancholy distinction of sharing the title of most overlooked jazz great with such as Lucky Thompson and Oscar Pettiford. Persistently neglected by jazz writers, it is fortunate indeed that jazz listeners turn the same kind of deaf ear to the critics that the critics have pointed at DeFranco. Boniface Ferdinand Leonardo DeFranco was born in Camden, New Jersey on February 17, 1923. His father was a piano tuner. No one taught me to play jazz clarinet, but I was taught "legitimate" (I hate that term, but we're stuck with it). I began studying with a teacher in Philadelphia when I was about nine. I went to a music school that had a free programme for poor kids. We were very poor in those days, and my teacher taught me for three years and never took any money. Then, when I began to make some money, three dollars, whatever, he charged me a dollar a lesson. When I was 14, I heard my dad playing records by the Hot Club Of France Quintet and by Art Tatum, and I was completely overwhelmed by the music, and from that time jazz became the most important thing to me. Then I began to listen to Jimmy Lunceford, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. The first jazz clarinettist I ever worked with was Johnny Mince in the Dorsey band, and he really caught my ear. I was enthralled with Benny, and he really made me take the decision to be a jazz player. Then I heard Artie Shaw and over a period of years began to develop more of an appreciation for Artie. I thought he was more modern, more harmonically developed than Benny, although Benny had more swing.

He initially studied rudimental snare and classical percussion and counts himself most fortunate to have had the invaluable opportunity of playing drum set with experienced, older musicians in the jazz clubs of Houston during his formative years in the 1960's Mr. Soph attended the University of North Texas (1963 - 1968) and studied drum set with the master teacher, Tommy Gwin. He occupied the drum chair in the prestigious "1:00 Lab Band" during his five years at North Texas and worked steadily in the clubs and recording studios of Dallas. He also toured with the Stan Kenton Orchestra the summer of 1965. Upon graduation in 1968, Mr. Soph, owing to the recommendation of the great alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, joined Woody Herman's "Thundering Herd". He toured internationally with Mr. Herman's band, making a number of recordings, among which is the Grammy winning album, Giant Steps.
