Extractions: Back to alumni profiles Three More Gradutates Ordained Three graduates were ordained as priests on June 30: Fr. Joseph O'Hara, Fr. Donald Bauer, and Fr. Robert Fromageot. Frs. O'Hara and Bauer were ordained in the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin, while Fr. Fromageot was ordained a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. Frs. O'Hara and Bauer bear remarkably similar stories: both were Wisconsin natives, both were engineering school graduates, both were start-over freshmen at Thomas Aquinas College, both tested their vocations in a religious order, both were seminarians under Bishop Raymond Burke, and both are associate pastors in central rural Wisconsin. And yet, even then, and even though they graduated from Thomas Aquinas College on the same day, and were ordained as priests nine years later on the same day, their stories still are unique. Fr. Extractions: Presenting Artists of International Reputation in the intimate atmosphere of the Recital Hall For over thirty years, pianist and teacher Donald Hageman series. Since the series' inception, nearly seventy pianists have graced its roster, and many have been so warmly received that Dayton audiences have requested their return on three or four separate occasions. The has provided the Midwestern debut for many of these artists, and a large number have gone on to achieve recognition throughout the world. To date, the series has offered a podium to pianists such as Frank Braley, Steven DeGroote, Janina Fialkowska, Kemal Gekic , Caio Pagano, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Sergei Schepkin, Juana Zayas, and many others of international distinction. In addition, the has offered the area premieres for contemporary works by composers such as Boulez, Birtwistle, Carter, Messiaen, Prokofieff, Rzewski, Sessions, Shostakovitch, and Stravinsky. The guiding philosophy of the has been to celebrate the artistry of the piano by presenting performers of rare distinction, many of whom have traveled uniquely individualistic paths of accomplishment. Happily, that philosophy has been warmly embraced over the years by its audience, which has proven to be one of the most knowledgable and appreciative in America.

Extractions: Don't be wary about investing $1700 in the talents of one conductor. Helmut Rilling is a seasoned Bach conductor. Not a proponent of the period instrument movement, he adopts a spirited modern approach. His orchestral pace is swift, his performers creative. In the harpsichord concertos, expertly performed by Robert Levin, Rilling's tempo is delicious-he treats rests more like notes than pauses. The performances range from the extraordinary to the acceptable with very few clunkers. Bach's resplendent choral worksthe St. Matthew and St. John Passions, the Christmas Oratorio, and the Mass in B Minor shake the room with baroque jubilance and anguish. Rilling applies the master's glorious counterpoint and polyphonic choral movements with emotive skill. His St. John Passion contains the alternate versions for five sections. He infuses the eight volumes of the Bach chorale books with a refreshing humanism, unclogged by the usual solemnity. Unfortunately, all of them have the same boilerplate program notes. Other program notes in the series are more comprehensive.

About Eroica Classical Recordings of Bela Bartok's solo piano works, featuring world class HungarianAmerican pianistJune de Valarie Alexandra Valois, Edward Wood, Yoon Ju Lee and juana zayas. http://www.eroica.com/intro.html
Extractions: ABOUT EROICA In 1993, when Eroica originally released Volumes I and II of Bela Bartok's solo piano works, featuring world class Hungarian-American pianist June de Toth , our primary mission was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. With that mission accomplished, Ms de Toth is now engaged in completing the Bartók cycle. She will be the first woman to record the Bartók solo piano works.. As a result, she received a special invitation from the Hungarian government to perform an all-Bartók recital at the Bartók Memorial House in Budapest, Hungary, on October 15, 1995; as part of a 30-day series of concerts commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death. June de Toth was the only American musician to be invited to perform in that distinguished, history-making series! She was the Schwann Music catalog Pick of the Year, along with Zubin Mehta and Anne-Sophie Mutter. These beginnings have launched Eroica on a fast track to our goal of international acceptance and recognition. We have initiated an intensive series of auditions, which have resulted in the signing of over a hundred brilliantly gifted new artists. They include the Manchester Music Festival Symphony Orchestra ; and pianists Kerry Baham June de Toth Jacques Despres Bronika Kushkuley ... Extractions: jroos@herald.com The parade of classical pianists marching through South Florida this month includes three who upend the stereotype of the iron-fisted male in a tailcoat. They are fleet-fingered Latin ladies: Alicia de Larrocha, Zenaida Manfugás and Juana Zayas. De Larrocha, the acclaimed virtuosa from Barcelona, plays a wide repertoire convincingly but is closely identified with Spanish masters like Granados, whose music she'll celebrate Friday. Manfugás, who'll open FIU's Music Festival 2001 on Oct. 25, was a protégé of Ernesto Lecuona and the legendary Walter Gieseking, but is a comparatively well-kept secret. She never achieved extraordinary fame, in part because of racism. Zayas, who plays this afternoon at the University of Miami's Gusman Hall, and Thursday with the Symphony of the Americas in Broward, seems an even better kept secret. Like De Larrocha and Manfugás, she was weaned by her mother on music, then went to study abroad, where she won prizes, but married young and began raising a family. Combining motherhood and performances didn't work for her at that time, and now she's making a comeback. No matter the difference in details, each of these women has striven to fulfill their musical ideals.

Extractions: Ondine ODE1008-2 DDD 56:37 At least on disc, Perahia has moved through the piano repertoire methodically, starting with Schumann and Mozart. Lately, Bach has been on the menu; might a thorough overview of Chopin be next? Perahia has paid less attention to the Polish master than one might have expected. It is all the more surprising, then, to find him tackling works that intimidated even Artur Rubinstein, whose Chopin-playing was in a class of its own for many decades. These recordings were made in London in the early summer of 2001, and the engineering is superb. Sony tells us the names of the piano technicians, but not the name of the piano! The Hungarian pianist was recorded in January 2002 in Finland. Ondine's engineering strikes me as being relatively non-interventionist, which is in contrast to Sony's x-ray clarity. Extractions: by Basanta Koomar Roy Among composers, Rachmaninoff looms large. While it seldom transpires that one gains equal distinction as a composer, and a pianist, yet this may be said of Rachmaninoff. In the course of the next hundred years or so the excellence of his piano playing will no doubt have become mythical, but the message of his musical compositions for the orchestra, for the voice and for the piano will still remain as cherished treasures of mankind. One fine morning not long ago, I found myself, by appointment, in the spacious studio of Rachmaninoff overlooking the Hudson. In this quiet and contemplative room where the master did much of his composing, we talked of many things. In the course of our conversation I asked the master musician from Moscow how he first gained recognition as a composer, for this is one of the most difficult things a young composer has to contend with.
