Founded as a festival to highlight new American music, Newport was started in 1969 by members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra who wanted a summer season in this Rhode Island yachting paradise much like the Boston Symphony Orchestra had in Tanglewood "They tried to do outdoor opera and it just didn't work," says Malkovitch's son and Newport Marketing Director Mark Malkovitch IV. "A soprano lost her voice and a cello literally fell apart." Thoughts turned to presenting other forms of music in an alternate venue, namely indoors. Newport's spate of stunning turn-of-the-century mansions, once private homes of Vanderbilts and Astors , were in the process of being opened to the public through The Preservation Society of Newport "The Orchestra seized on the chance to do chamber music in these beautiful chambers," says Malkovitch the younger. "That's how it all started."

This month, the work of the international masters of photography have been gathered in Milan making our city the meeting point of images coming from all over the world. Museums and private galleries propose several interesting photo shows from reportage to portrait. We have selected the following: Hollywood and the myth of Marilyn : Until September 1st, Palazzo Reale will host "A Night with Marilyn", an exhibition of 73 photos taken by Douglas Kirkland in 1961, just nine months before the diva's tragic and mysterious death. The pictures, depicting the actress - already a legend in Kennedy's America - wrapped in silk sheets and in a soft-golden light, were published in the 25th anniversary issue of Look Magazine. The show's itinerary is divided into two parts: the first one shows big colour portraits of Marilyn while the other is more focused on back stage, black and white images.

Extractions: Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos Music: A Treasury of Cuban Piano Classics by: Ignacio Cervantes Alejandro Caturla Gisela Hernandez Ernesto Lecuona ... Juana Zayas Rating: 5 Stars - Lost and Found Freedom Rating: 5 Stars - Elegance is the Key in Zayas' Recording When listening to this beautiful recording, one realizes that the pianist is an artist of intelligence and nuance. I own seven versions of Cervantes' Danzas, including a very rare version of another great Cuban pianist of yesteryear, Yvette Hern¡ndez. I play all my Cervantes recordings quite often, and I must admit that I enjoy Ms. Zayas' recording the best. In her hands, the apparently simple music of Ignacio Cervantes is treated with such care, intelligence and finesse, that this simplicity is transformed into the sheer beauty of many brilliant colors, as precious and perfect as small jewls in an elegant necklece. Zayas brings Cervantes' music to the high level it deserves, saving it, for the pleasure of our ears, from the cursory and careless fashion in which, unfortunately, many pianists play such delicious piano miniatures.
