Milonga.co.uk - Classical Fans say that his critics are merely jealous, but these new recordings byCuban pianist juana zayas will give them something to think about. http://www.milonga.co.uk/classical/chopin.html
Extractions: Chopin Artur Rubinstein (1887 - 1982) has become completely identified with the music of Chopin. Stung by criticism that his playing was merely that of a salon fop, he retired from the concert platform in 1932 and spent two years working on his technique. Rubinstein recorded Chopin's Mazurkas, Polonaises and Nocturnes three times - in the late 1930s, again in the 1950s, and a third time (in stereo) in the 1960s. The Nocturnes benefit most from the more measured reading of the third set; for the polonaises and muzurkas the 1950s recordings emerge as narrow favourites over the 1930s set. With the latter available at low price on Naxos Historical and Classica D'Oro, they are a very good place to start. Artur Rubinstein's performances of Chopin's Nocturnes have turned thousands of people on to classical music. Although the 1930s recordings are available on Naxos at a bargain price, it's this, his third set from 1965-67 that is to be preferred for its interpretative depth as well as its stereo sound.

Extractions: ST SEASON st International Season of the Newport Music Festival featured 70 artists, 57 concerts and 650 individual pieces, concluding with a gala performance by Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic on July 25. Held from July 9-25, the festival used CFIIIS concert grand pianos and Disklavier pianos furnished by Yamaha Corporation of America. The concert venues were some of Newports most famous mansions: The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, Belcourt Castle, Rosecliff and Ochre Court. A few performances also took place under tents and at sea aboard the cruiser "Vista Jubilee." One tradition established by Dr. Mark P. Malkovich III, the festivals General Director, has been to feature one great composer and perform a retrospective of many, if not all, of his or her chamber works. This year featured the complete chamber music repertoire of Sergei Rachmaninoff. The Russian composer was honored with a series of afternoon "Rachmaninoviad" concerts, following the success of last years "Beethoveniads." Every single piano piece was performed, including two piano versions of Rachmaninoffs four concerti, more than 100 songs, and his complete chamber music. Cuban-born pianist Juana Zayas made her Newport debut with an all-Chopin evening on July 9. Other notable performances included a selection of Azerbaijani love songs featuring pianist Farhad Badabeily with the Kasimova sisters, Bakus leading sopranos; an opening night gala with Irish pianist John OConor; a "Schubertabend" ("Schubert evening"); and a morning devoted to Mozart. Danish musician/comedian Victor Borges evening performance midway through the festival was one of the most popular attractions.
