Yancey's playing was beautiful, sensitive and fluid and compared to his contemporaries was quite restrained resulting a different and unique texture to his performances though he could romp a boogie with the best of them as heard on The Fives/ Janie's Joys/ Yancey's Getaway and other selections here. Although he started playing piano in 1915 he didn't make his first recordings until May, 1939 when he recorded 17 sides in one long session. There are 6 beautiful sides from a session in October, 1939 and this first disc ends with two tracks from February, 1940 where he accompanies undistinguished vocalist Faber Smith. Sound is excellent and enclosed books has interesting, if somewhat stilted, notes by Konrad Nowakowski and some excellent photos. Wonderful! (FS)

Extractions: "Sultan of Swing" Danny Stiles has been using the Charlie Barnet Orchestras ''Cherokee'' since he launched his venerable and long-running show Big Band Sounds in December 1969 on the now-defunct radio station WEVD. This 1939 classic was also the signature tune of the Barnet Orchestra and it helped catapult the band to the front ranks of the swing era. Saxophonist and band leader Charlie Barnet was among the most influential and popular musicians of the 1930s and 40s. Like Benny Goodman, he is credited for hiring many black singers and musicians as early as 1937, a time when other bands were segregated. His use of black performers kept his orchestra out of several hotels and ballrooms and was also likely the reason why he was never selected for any big commercial radio series. His hard-swinging arrangements were influenced by Duke Ellington, and because his arrangers were so well chosen and the music so well played, many of Barnets tracks retain a notable originality to this day.

Extractions: Pianist Big Joe Duskin from Cincinnati was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1921, the son of a hard-core Baptist preacher. Joe's repertoire mixes blues standards with boogie compositions, pop tunes from the boogie era of the '40s, and originals such as "Well, Well Baby" and "I Met a Girl Named Martha." Joe is an expressive and soulful singer who phrases his big voice with the same dexterity that he brings to the keyboard. While this material was recorded nearly twenty years ago, today Big Joe Duskin is still singing and playing in undiminished fine form and has recently appeared in France and at many festivals. Singer/guitarist Walter Vinson of the legendary Mississippi Sheiks, singer/pianist Little Brother Montgomery, and singer Mama Yancey (widow of the great blues and boogie pianist Jimmy Yancey) were veterans of the pre-electric Chicago scene and were in magnificent form when Riverside captured their plaintive acoustic stylings in 1961 for its Chicago: The Living Legends MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS A Wonderful Thing, I Knew You Were Kiddin' All the Time, Things 'Bout Comin' My Way, LITTLE BROTHER MONTGOMERY New Satellite Blues, HENRY BENSON Jelly Jelly, Jelly Roll Baker, MAMA YANCEY Four O'Clock Blues, How Long Blues, Mama Yancey's Blues, Make Me a Pallet on the Floor, plus CD bonus track Santa Fe Blues

Extractions: NANCY WHISKEY 1935 - 2003 Nancy Whiskey, the reluctant "Queen of Skiffle", passed away suddenly at her home in Leicester on Saturday, 1st February, 2003 Nancy was actually born Anne Wilson in Glasgow on 4th March, 1935, but took her stage name from the chorus of a Scottish traditional folk song, "The Calton [not Carlton] Weaver". Her father taught her to play guitar and whilst at art school in Glasgow she came under the musical influence of fellow student Jimmie McGregor. It was also whilst at college, during a "rag week" parade through the streets of Glasgow, that she met jazz pianist Bob Kelly (died 1999), whose blues and boogie woogie styled work can be heard on some Ken Colyer recordings. She was eventually to marry Kelly (they had to wait for his divorce) and had one child, a girl named Yancey after blues pianist Jimmy Yancey. By 1956, Nancy had moved to London with Bob Kelly, she performing as a folk singer and him as a jazz pianist. Although she was persuaded by Chas McDevitt to join his Skiffle group early in 1957 and together they famously had a hit with the twee American folk song "Freight Train", it was not what she really wanted to do. She hated the commercialism, and lack of further success and friction with McDevitt over various issues led to a parting of the ways within a year.

Bill Westcott maintains an active career as a pianist, composer, arranger, lecturer, singer, writer and teacher. About the Music During the early years of the twentieth century, while North American critics and audiences were working hard to understand the innovations of modern European composers, an entirely new tradition of serious, expressive music was coalescing right around them. African-American pianists from the southern and mid-western United States were bringing together elements of folk, popular and classical music to create an important foundation for the later development of jazz.
