CBS News | Adrien Brody: 'The Pianist' | March 24, 2003 01:50:12 The pianist marks the release will be the highly anticipated film The Singing Detective, opposite robert Downey, Jr., Mel Gibson, and Robin wright Penn. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/14/earlyshow/leisure/celebspot/main536470
Extractions: Since winning the top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, "The Pianist" has been collecting honors including a Best Picture award from The National Society of Film Critics and a Golden Globe nomination. The film stars Brody, the New York born actor, as a Jewish pianist who struggles to stay alive in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II. "The Pianist" was adapted by English playwright/screenwriter Ronald Harwood from the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew who detailed his survival during World War II. Szpilman was a composer and pianist who struggled to stay alive during the German occupation. When the Germans were forced to retreat from Warsaw in January 1945, there were only about 20 Jews left alive in the city. One was Wladyslaw Szpilman, surprisingly helped by a German officer.

Movie Review: Quills By Robert Glatzer to Queen Elizabeth to his mentally impaired pianist in Shine Had Mr. wright onlygiven us a sense of that life Movie Review by robert Glatzer ?Copyright 2000. http://www.allmovieportal.com/m/2000_Quills35.html
Extractions: a movie review by: Robert Glatzer Philip Kaufmans film Quills gives us the story of the last years of the Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush), incarcerated in the mental hospital at Charenton, writing new novels at a furious pace and having them snuck out to his publisher by the lovely chambermaid Madeleine (Kate Winslet). Young Abbé Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix) runs the hospital gently and thoughtfully, hoping perhaps that de Sade will somehow give up his pornography and return to God; but the Abbé's nemesis, Dr. Royer-Collard (Michael Caine), a friend of the emperor, has other ideas and wangles an oversight position in order to impose his own barbaric ideas of treatment, specifically upon the Marquis. Thats the film, with evil consequences for everyone, not excluding the audience, which must endure two hours of pre-programmed, by-the-numbers events at Charenton according to the script by Doug Wright, which derives from his play of the same name. Rush, one of the most versatile actors in film today, from his Machiavellian adviser to Queen Elizabeth to his mentally impaired pianist in Shine, here is confined in his (rather large and initially well-furnished) cell with nothing to do but rage and write furiously (the quills, get it?). The problem is that the script barely gives him an interesting line to speak. He ends up repeating himself, throwing tantrums, tempting pretty Madeleine, and generally making life miserable for the Abbé , thus inviting the doctor to take over and work his evil.

Extractions: MAURICE WRIGHT REVIEWED The Art Of Starting A Season Why do we have to wait until the Philadelphia Orchestra starts performing to begin our classical music season? Together with Karil Middleman's innovative Philadelphia Classical Symphony, the Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts answered that question resoundingly on September 15. Planning ahead for its current Maxfiedl Parrish show, PAFA recruited Middleman to oversee a contest for new works based on five Parrish favorites. Middleman told the large audience on hand for the results that 1,000 slides of his paintings were sent on request, and 59 entries were received. Every one of these [winning compositions] carried the evening's high standards, held aloft at the center by Temple University Professor Maurice Wright's " Landscape (Music After Arizona) ." This was a solidly organized depiction of desert images, unafraid to lapse from contemporary syntax into an antique minuet or a rhapsodic song for its totally absorbing contrasts. It was played by seven excellent soloists, conducted by the composer.... Why not open our season right after Labor Day if the serious fare is going to be this stimulating?

Extractions: By Bill Hersey It's spring again and, like just about everyone I know, love this weather. As you know, we'll soon be heading into Golden Week. As I mentioned several columns ago, the long holiday starts Apr. 29, Green Day, then moves on to Constitution Day on May 3, People's Day May 4 and Children's Day May 5 which is a Sunday, so Monday, May 6, is also a holiday. Although May 1, Labor Day, is not a national holiday, many people take off from work. Some demonstrate, others take off for popular vacation destinations or just lay back and relax. I'm spending five days in Guam before Golden Week because I've learned with higher air fares, crowded airports and booked-up resorts, that Tokyo, with lots of people out of town and many cultural events taking place, can be a laid-back and enjoyable place to be over the long holiday period. Whatever, wherever, I hope you have a good one. As always, it was an SRO crowd of Tokyo's most fashionable people at the latest
