Country Arts SA: Media Release: 10 July 2001 MEDIA RELEASE 12 September 2002 Country Arts SA present ali wood A revolutionaryapproach to classical music. ali wood is no ordinary concert pianist. http://www.countryarts.org.au/contact_us/12_09_02_aliwood.htm
Extractions: A revolutionary approach to classical music Ali Wood is no ordinary concert pianist. The special lighting effects and costume changes, ranging from red bow tie and tails to jeans, give her performances a theatricality rarely associated with classical music recitals. This approach to classical music is drawing younger audiences back into the concert hall. Ali Wood appears across regional South Australia through the generous support of Country Arts SA's Major Sponsor for Season 2002, ETSA Utilities. Ali made her debut performance at New York's famous Carnegie Hall when she was just 19 years of age. The last Australian to make a debut there was Dame Nellie Melba, over 100 years ago. Internationally acclaimed as an artistic and creative virtuoso, this young Australian pianist has already completed two world tours - last year and this year - and performed in over twenty countries. This year her schedule included a six week tour of the Peoples Republic of China - the most extensive tour in that country ever undertaken by a foreign artist. Ali Wood was playing concerts by the time she was twelve years old, and in her early teens won numerous competitions and awards. As a thirteen year old, she became the youngest pianist in Australia to be awarded a Performers Diploma with Distinction. Ali left school when she was fifteen to practise the piano eight to ten hours a day, seven days a week.

She has already completed two world tours in the last two years and has performed in more than 20 countries. Her career as a virtuoso concert pianist began at 17, when the young captured the attention of the international music community by performing three major piano concertos in one concert, regarded as a feat for any concert pianist, let alone a teenager. In October 1998, Ali became the first Australian concert pianist to make her New York debut at Carnegie Hall. Although nervous about her lack of performance experience, Ali managed to raise some eyebrows.

Extractions: To: PianoWomenEditor@aol.com By chance I read the biography of Brigitte Engerer . There seem to be some errors. Ms. Engerer did not win the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1978 (Belgium). She received the third prize. The first prize was Abdel Rahman El-Bacha. I was present at the final evening when prizes were given. Also, I do not remember her winning the first prize in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Perhaps these were unintentional mistakes by the person who prepared the biography. Best regards. Editorial note: The biography Mr. Yuksel is referring to is published at http://www.transartuk.com/engerer/, the site we linked to her name. It is currently not available so we changed it to a biography page at http://www.artsmg.com/be.html, though this seems to have the same (mis)information. N.Y., May 20, 1968) was an active performer up until a month before she died, performing the Schumann Piano Concerto in April, 1968. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was one, in 1913. Though she did not begin piano lessons until age 13, within just a few years she was the winner of the American Matthay Assoc. Prize Contest. By age 20 she made her London recital debut, and two years later her New York debut. George Kehler's "The Piano in Concert" lists Carnegie Hall recitals almost every year up until her death. He states: "She was a serious artist with a dazzling technique and a pianist of good taste." This month's editorial column looks at three African-American women classical pianists:
