Fat chance. I don't miss it at all, and every time I watch, my opinion only strengthens. See, by the time I had regular television access in first year university, I'd watched enough films to realise how pitiful television quality usually is. Sure, I put in my time, saw a bit of the simpsons and a little of x-files before I got tired of the formulas and moved on. But my heart belongs to cinema. Increasingly, my taste is leaning towards film and away from movies, as well. The distinction is silly and pretentious, of course, but then so am I. I like serious stories, quality writing, good acting, and I'm not fond of the Hollywood "opening weekend" straitjacket. Mind you, I started in the world of action flicks, and I still have a penchant for the occasional wild ride, but if you want me to rave about a film, you have to shoot higher.

Extractions: e-mail this article This Country Blows! T he best thing to be said about Shanghai Knights is that it gives Jackie Chan a chance to dance. In the guise of one of his signature fight scenes using any implement in sight, he translates Gene Kelly's famous rainy-night number from Singin' in the Rain to martial arts. Back again as Chon Chon, he happens upon a street vendor's stash of umbrellas, which he uses to outwit and outstep a throng of thugs. It's a lovely number, as Chan hooks and spins his adversary-partners, flips and floats himself, to create a brief moment of balletic peace in a storm of noisy tedium. These thugs are, of course, chasing Chon Wang for a reason, though it hardly matters what. The point of a Jackie Chan movie is to show him in motion, graceful, spastic, hilarious, innovative. The business with the umbrellas emphasizes Chan's likeness to dancers generally, and pays proper homage to Kelly in particular. Chan's movies are built like musicals: you put up with the corny plot and worse dialogue in order to get to the action-stunt-dance scenes, to marvel at their athletic, poetic brilliance. And so: this time, Chon Wang is in London, having reunited with his buddy from

Extractions: Academy Award Nominee - Best Foreign Film , 2003 Closing Night Gala Selection - Boston Jewish Film Festival, 2002 A love story spanning two continents, NOWHERE IN AFRICA is Caroline Link's extraordinary true tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya. Abandoning their once-comfortable existence in Germany, Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel (Juliane Kahler, of AIMAE AND JAGUAR) and their five-year-old daughter Regina each deal with the harsh realities of their new life in different ways. As the war rages on the other side of the world, the trio's relationships to their strange environment become increasingly complicated as Jettel grows more self-assured, Walter finds himself more haunted by the life they left behind, and the shy yet curious Regina immediately embraces the country by finding a friend in Owuor, the farm's cook. As they endeavor to find a way back to each other, they must also choose between their homeland and the new country they have learned to cherish.

Extractions: Article and photos by Jimmie Jones The 23rd always free Annual Chicago Jazz Festival was held at Grant Park, August 30 to September 2, 2001. The festival was produced by the City of Chicago's Mayor's Office of Special Events and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The Programming committee consists of highly Jazz knowledgeable individuals including musician trumpeter Art Hoyle, writers John Litweiler and Neal Tesser, both authors of several books on Jazz; and Art Lang, photographer Lauren Deutsch; disc jockey Richard Wong; club operator Penny Tyler and record store operators Jim Dejong and Kent Richmond. On Wednesday, August 29, the day before the start of the festival, a pub crawl was held. For $20. ($15 in advance) bus transportation was furnished continuously to and from fourteen different clubs featuring live Jazz associated with the pub crawl from 6:00 to 11:30 pm. On Thursday, August 30 at 4:30 pm prior to the festival, pianist Jason Moran gave a solo performance at the Chicago Cultural Center performing original compositions. Festival music began at Grant Park's Petrillo Music Shell with a tribute to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven. Trumpeter Orbert Davis led the group with clarinetist Brent Courtney, trombonist Steve Berry and a rhythm section of piano bass and drums. The group played arrangements of Armstrong's early bands in the late twenties with the talented Orbert Davis playing in a style and with a sound close to that of Pops, much in the manner that New Orleans young trumpeter Nicholas Payton has done.

A followup to "Shanghai Noon" (2000), it reteams American waiter-gigolo and dime novelist Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) with Asian martial arts maestro Chon Wang (Jackie Chan), or John Wayne, as Roy calls him. When her father (Kim S. Chan) is murdered in China in 1887 and "the imperial seal" stolen, beautiful Chon Lin (Fann Wong) summons her much older brother Wang to meet her in London, where she has pursued the killer, Lord Rathbone (Aidan Gillen).
