Also, students will receive chamber music coaching and private lessons, and perform works in a concert setting. Top guest artists include Van Cliburn Competition silver medalist Yakov Kazmann; Doriot Antony Dwyer, flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; violinist Charles Castleman of the Eastman School of Music; horn player Charles Kavalovsky, formerly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and Terry Everson, a trumpet player at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Extractions: The Joy of Music Guest Artist Dr. William Westney at Mt. A Are you a perfectionist? Are you a music lover? Are you an aspiring teacher, musician, actor, radio broadcaster, public speaker...? Are you ready for a surprise? From February 10-12, Mount Allison University's Department of Music will welcome the noted and idiosyncratic pianist, teacher, lecturer and clinician Dr. William Westney as guest artist. Westney's innovative perspective on the art of performance should be of interest to a wide cross section of Mt. A students and faculty. Westney will perform a solo recital at 8:00 pm on Thursday night in Brunton Auditorium, present a lecture entitled "The Perils of Perfectionism" at 8:00 pm the following night, and conduct an Un-Master Class session with students in Mt. A's Music programme on Saturday from 9:30-12:30 am in the Band Room. The public is cordially invited to these events, and there is no admission charge. Students and faculty of the Music Department are excited about Westney's visit. Music students Tracy Anderson, Judith Millar, Jennifer Cosman, and Kim Denis, as well as the Saxville Quartet, will be some of the musical dramatic guinea pigs. Millennial deep listener and piano professor Janet Hammock strongly encourages people from disciplines other than music to attend the event. Westney, the originator of the popular and intriguing Un-Master Class workshop, which has been held at large conferences such as Chamber Music America and the National Flute Association, and also such prominent schools such as Julliard, Peabody Conservatory, the Aspen School of Music, the Cleveland Institute, and conservatories in Europe and Asia, works with an unusual approach to teaching. In a recent feature article, the New York Times described the unique Un-Master Class as "fascinating".

DR V4.2: The Bassoon At Lubbock, 1981 classic work. Nakagawa combined his dark, fluent style of playing withpianist william westney for a convincing performance. Le Phenix http://idrs.colorado.edu/Publications/DR/DR4.2/bassoon.html
Extractions: David DeBolt On Tuesday of the 1981 IDRS Conference week I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bassoon requirements of the Kansas City Philharmonic repertoire for the week would allow me freedom to be in Lubbock for most of the events. The enjoyment and valuable information gained there more than counterbalanced my second surprise, that of finding myself appointed bassoon reviewer just as I was preparing to leave. The atmosphere of the convention was at once Texan, International and adventurous. A warm West-Texas welcome was extended not only by Richard Meek and staff, our excellent hosts, but also by the delicious food and comfortable rooms, the gracious townspeople who were guides at the ranch museum, and the community orchestra players whose efforts made possible a concerto concert. Texas-sized bassoon and double-reed ensembles appeared several times, and programming throughout the convention emphasized pieces for two or more double reed instruments. Quartets and larger groups made a striking effect, but not without some reminders of the pitch and balance problems inherent in such undertakings. The most notable Texas-sized exception was the group of 6 oboes, 6 English-horns, 6 bassoons, contra-bassoon, and sometimes 2 flutes performing "Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon'; The Immovable Do

Extractions: jcsalmon@uncg.edu by John Salmon Several battle cries for interpretive freedom have converged in my mind recently: John Perry, speaking to an audience at last year's Music Teachers National Association convention in Los Angeles, exhorted pianists to view the Urtext as only the beginning of the interpretive process; without creativity, Perry argued, no score, however "definitive," will ever come to life in performance. Robert Weirich, speaking to the same group in Los Angeles, urged us to consider "the spirit of improvisation" that caused such works as Beethoven's "Rage Over the Lost Penny" and Mozart's Adagio in B Minor, K. 540, to come to life, even accepting (if not demonstrating at that moment) the esthetic legitimacy of spontaneous note-changing. William Westney, in the August/September 1999 issue of American Music Teacher , warns against the perils of perfectionism, stressing beauty as the true goal of practice and performance. Robert Levin, at a 92nd Street Y gathering, defended ornamentation in Schubert.
Sleeve Notes - The Romantic Piano Concerto, Vol 28 - Stojowski of storm and stress; except in the hands of a great pianist it would In the USA, WilliamWestney, professor of music at Texas Tech University, briefly revived http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/notes/67314.html
Extractions: Sigismond Stojowski Excerpts from the sleeve notes Hailed throughout Europe as one of Polands most outstanding composers at the fin de siècle, Zygmunt (Sigismond) Stojowski (1870-1946) has slipped into oblivion in todays musical world, even in his native Poland. As a young man Stojowski was recognised as one of the first Polish symphonists of great European calibre. His orchestral music was heard and played by the finest orchestras in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, London, Manchester, Paris and St Petersburg in the 1890s, when the composer was only in his twenties. Tchaikovsky was scheduled to conduct Stojowskis Suite in E flat Op 9 in 1894, and in 1895, by command of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Stojowskis cantata Le Printemps, Op 7, was premiered in English at a State Concert at Buckingham Palace. For two decades Stojowskis position as one of Polands most outstanding composers was unquestioned. Stojowskis decline in popularity was due to his die-hard Romanticism in a world on the brink of a musical revolution that dramatically changed styles, tastes and compositional techniques. Even though one can find some influences of Impressionism in his Second Piano Concerto, the composer basically refused to change. In fact, for all practical purposes he stopped composing around World War I and directed his energy into performance and teaching. Unfortunately, a century later his music is often considered old-fashioned, schmaltzy or as one British critic put it high tosh.
