Extractions: DATE: December 16, 2002 MERIDIAN, Miss. - One hundred-twenty four individuals received early Christmas presents-their diplomas-at the fall commencement ceremony held Saturday, December 14, at Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus. The graduates hailed from 33 Mississippi towns and the states of Arizona, California, and Illinois. The 11:00 a.m. ceremony began with a processional of the faculty and degree candidates, followed by an invocation from Pastor Richard D. Davis of Westwood Baptist Church. The 186th Air Refueling Wing Color Guard had the honor of presenting colors, after which the national anthem was sung by Jennifer Hermetz, a MSU sophomore. As president of the MSU-Meridian Student Association, Jessica Culpepper, delivered farewell wishes on behalf of the student body. In his address to the graduates and over 600 of their friends and family, Dr. Harold J. "Nick" Nichols, dean of MSU-Meridian, took a tongue and cheek approach in the delivery of his research into the history of commencement speeches. "According to several sources," said Nichols, "the longest commencement speech was given at Harvard University in the 19th century. It lasted for six hours-three hours in Latin, three in Greek-and the students had to pass a test afterwards."
