Arcadi Volodos arcadi volodos Debut Recording Piano transcriptions of music of Bach, Bizet, Liszt, Mozart, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky Sony Classical 62691 (F) (DDD) TT 6120 http://www.classicalcdreview.com/volodos1.html
Extractions: Sony Classical 62691 (F) (DDD) TT: 61:20 Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos, now in his mid-twenties, didn't begin serious study of the piano until he was 16, but hearing these masterful performances one would never suspect that he has been playing but a decade. This debut Sony CD offers transcriptions, many of them Horowitz originals apparently reconstructed by Volodos: Variations on Bizet's Carmen and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 . He also dispatches Georges Cziffra's fantastic transcription of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee (but doesn't play the repeats), Feinberg's transcription of the scherzo from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 and a Bach Largo, three songs of Schubert arranged by Liszt, three excerpts from Prokofiev's Cinderella , and his own transcriptions of two songs of Rachmaninoff and Mozart's Turkish March.
Extractions: Seattle Times music critic Pianist Arcadi Volodos makes his debut at Benaroya Hall on Tuesday. E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive This pianist first burst upon the international scene in 1997 with a Sony Classical CD of piano transcriptions, with playing so spectacular that critics and CD buyers were boggled. (So were the awards juries at the BBC Music Magazine, the German Record Critics and three or four other prize-awarding institutions around the world.) Later CDs, such as "Arcadi Volodos Live at Carnegie Hall," made it clear that this isn't just a pianist with the fabulous fingers necessary to sail through those thorny and flashy transcriptions. Volodos' program is heavy on the Russians. He's doing Scriabin (Énigme, Op. 52, No. 2, Guirlandes, Op. 73, No. 2, and Piano Sonata No. 7, Op. 64, White Mass) and Rachmaninoff (four Preludes and five shorter pieces, including Volodos' own arrangement of one). He'll also play Schubert's Sonata in A-Flat Major (D.557) and some Liszt selections, including the Sonnet No. 123 (Petrarch) and three other pieces. This program should display his considerable technical firepower as well as his interpretive skills.

Da versteht man, warum Rachmaniov als Pianist so hohes Ansehen genoß.
Extractions: One of the best things about January is that the classical music scene revs up again after the mandatory December slowdown for the requisite Nutcracker-Messiah-Caroling concerts. Several big names and plenty of new compositions fill the calendar for the next three months. Arcadi Volodos, Salvatore Licitra and Lang Lang are among the big-name international performers heading to the Bay Area. Here's the month-by-month rundown of some of the events on the always-crowded classical calendar: January Beginner alert! ``Madama Butterfly'' opens for five performances at San Francisco Opera. Matthias Goerne will also come next year. Tell us a little about the programming for this summer. The program is mixed in terms of performers and also in terms of how familiar the music is to the listeners. How are the programs determined?

Extractions: Edited by Valour Two years ago, in a supremely transparent interpretation of Chopin's Etudes , Nikolai Lugansky offered impressive evidence of his ability to present virtuoso pieces with undemonstrative ease, yet full of poetic meaning. Even before his victory in the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, he was already earning his place among the elite of the younger generation of pianists with impressive recordings of Rachmaninoff and successful debuts in Europe, South America and the Far East. And now a new recording of works by Chopin has been issued, his fourth with the French label Erato. However, it is not only Chopin and Rachmaninoff that the young Russian is able to play with sensitive brilliance: he has already approached works by the German Romantics with astonishing sensitivity, as his reading of Robert Schumann's Symphonic Etudes , in particular, demonstrates. The soft delicacy with which he plays the final posthumous variation, in which shimmering harmonies descend from high F with angelic tenderness, bears witness to his understanding of a psychological dimension which Germans and non-Germans both call, for want of a really accurate translation, "
