Repeats LEAST as much articulative range of expression as a pianist perhaps more. Tjakovan schie wrote (March 1, 2002) Sometimes a repeat has a function, sometimes http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/Repeats.htm
Extractions: Also, are repeats meant to be played exactly the same or do they imply a certain initiative of improvisation from the performer? I have heard both seemingly identical repeats and very diverse ones (eg Gould's - playing a voice staccato in the first play and legato in the repeat). As there are less possibilities to make such big changes when playing on the harpsichord, should we draw the conclusion that, from the historical point of view, repeats should be played as closely to the first play as possible?

Extractions: Welcome The compositions that we've chosen for this week is titled, and a part of Water . These beautiful compositions are written by the composer, Mr. Tjako van Schie who hails from the Netherlands. Mr. van Schie is also a very fine pianist, as you can hear for yourself. This Dutch composer/pianist is also a teacher I might add, at the well known Amsterdam Conservatory. To read what the composer has to say about the entire composition which he titles, ' The 4 water miniatures ' or to learn more about Mr. Tjako van Schie, or if you'd like to listen to more of his music and read more about his history... you can see and do all these things at his web page which is: http://users.castel.nl/~schic02/ Now for this week's picture presentation titled, ' Tic - Tac - Sharp ! ' As usual I'll define this word by using our good friend, Mr. Webster's definition taken straight publication. There are a few different meanings for the word SHARP... but defined in mmusical terms, the symbol ' Sharp ' means simply: " To raise a tone or pitch one half step higher than the note or tone named." In other words, if a note is called a ' G '... and then a sharp is added after it, it would then be called a G sharp ( G# ) and it's tone would be one half step higher than the original ' G ' note... now it's a G#..... enharmonically it's called an Ab ( A flat ) eh?....( Forget I've said that ) It may help some of you who have no knowledge of music theory, to say that the Sharp is the opposite of the symbol called.... ' Flat ' .
