New Release Highlights 2 Although blanca uribe has already performed the 32 sonatas many times, she continuallydrawn to the crisp, lively articulations of pianist Stefan Mendl http://www.hbdirect.com/reviews/102bbc1.cfm
Extractions: [Reviewed together with ERA 85773] "Marie-Claire, the ageless advocate of her brother's music, presents what may well be her final interpretations of these compositions... Comparing her earlier recordings with this shows that her tempos have varied little over the years, with only a few exceptions... A mature confidence comes through, even in shorter works that really aren't as interesting. I have to think this is the collection of choice now..." -Metz, ARG

Extractions: Van Cliburn Foundation In order to learn what direction their careers have taken since participating in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Van Cliburn Foundation recently asked all finalists of the first ten competitions to send us information about their current activities. The following summary, culled from their responses, continues to support our belief that ranking needs to be attenuated, that only rarely does one pianist emerge head and shoulders above all the others, and that the group that surfaces at the end of a competition represents the collective and subjective preference of the jury during a specific point in time without an implicit suggestion of one finalist being better than another. A close examination of the depth and diversity of accomplishments achieved by the majority of our past winners helps to expand our traditional definition of success as it applies to forging a career in music. Laureates of the Cliburn Competition may have developed careers without the benefit of the competition. However, it is more than likely that the springboard offered by the competition helped to open a few doors that otherwise may have remained closed for a while. The success of our laureates should not, in any case, be measured solely by performing regularly at Carnegie Hall. The handful of pianists who do so remains a small oneMurray Perahia, Evgeny Kissin, Maurizio Pollini, Krystian Zimerman, and one or two others including Radu Lupu, a Cliburn gold medalist. But there are literally thousands of orchestra and recital presenters the world over who require pianists for live performances, for which the superstars cannot possibly be available, affordable, or even desirable. As Rildia Bee OBryan Cliburn used to say, There is no one preacher who can deliver all sermons.

Extractions: online.news@oberlin.edu A YEAR OF ADVENTURES ON THE HIGH KEYS FOR OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC STUDENTS AND GRADUATES M ARCH 6, 2003It has been a high-octane year for piano students and recent graduates of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Here is an overview of some recent awards and achievements garnered this past year. Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major, K. 459. The Ann Arbor News noted: "Clarity, beautifully delineated phrases, and delicacy of touch were the hallmarks of [Hans] Mozart playing." A piano performance major, Han studies with Oberlin Professor of Pianoforte Peter Takács. The competition was his first public performance since an accident in which he fractured his arm. Han credits his comeback to Takács: "Without his support I can hardly imagine how I would have survived the competition. He encouraged me. Thats the most important thing. He also taught me some relaxation and arm strength techniques that helped me overcome the physical difficulties." Han says that he will use these techniques for the rest of his life. Takács has similar admiration for his young pupil. "Its such a pleasure to work with a student who is both talented and motivated," says Takács. "Mudi has had to work very hard to regain the time and mobility he lost due to his accident, so winning this competition is even more of an achievement. He also has become a very skilled Mozart player, which is not a very easy thing for a young performer to do."
Peermusic Classical - Richard Wilson, Essay composition and teaching, Wilson is still an active pianist, whose performances FredSherry, Misha Amory, Arthur Weisberg, Nancy Allen, blanca uribe, Todd Crow http://www.peermusic.com/classical/Wilsonessay.htm
Extractions: A revealing remark in the program note Richard Wilson wrote for his Bassoon Concerto offers a hint of where this highly individual composer's musical preoccupations lie. Explaining his decision to compose a concerto for that rarely spotlighted woodwind, he observed: "It is an instrument I have always loved.... Its plaintive, primordial voice speaks and sings of the precariousness of the human condition. I could not resist the chance to help it reach out to a larger audience." That "precariousness of the human condition" is the tell-tale phrase. For here is a composer who has made it his vocation to search, among the multifarious and often inimical shadows of the imagination, for the elusive moment of certainty that can constitute at once a rewarding artistic statement and a reassurance about the solidity of the world. In the last few years Wilson's music, already known to a group of enthusiastic admirers, has begun to make a wider mark, with the help of commissions from the San Francisco Symphony and other organizations. His works have been heard not only in such American musical centers as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Cleveland, and Los Angeles and at the Aspen Music Festival, but also in London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Zurich, Milan, Amsterdam, Graz, Leningrad, Stockholm, Tokyo, Bogota, and a number of Australian cities.
Peermusic Classical - Recent Reviews Leventhal, violist Brek Renzelman, cellist Karl Lavine, pianist Phillip Bush ensembleAllan Blustine, Rolf Shulte, Dorothy Lawson, blanca uribe, Paul Hostetter http://www.peermusic.com/classical/Recentreviews.htm
Extractions: Recent Performance Reviews From the Journal News (Westchester County, NY) "Thracian Echoes,'' by New Rochelle native Derek Bermel, opened the program in the rolling hills of Bulgaria. With wind players nested in the balconies, and members of the brass section lurking in the wings, "Echoes'' seemed about to take the gimmick route. Instead, Bermel's sophisticated orchestration and meticulous part-writing made every stage direction and sound effect a vital part of this highly evocative, but never-once-incidental work. As the echoes began to layer and thicken, Dunkel kept every voice perfectly clear. And at sudden peaks of activity, his ensemble showed a great willingness to share the spotlight. The percussion and string sections joined in Bermel's quick, odd-meter gypsy dances. Clarinetist John Moses and oboist Melanie Feld stayed snugly abreast while charting the composer's exotic, wide-stepping melodies. At the work's most expansive point, marked "Paydushko xhoro,'' the tempo seemed to stretch out in both directions at once, the brass taking slow, downward strides, the strings leaning far forward. And in the calm regions at either end of the piece, perching woodwinds whistled arabesques from far above the enthralled crowed.
