Her volume is particularly welcome because it includes recordings that have been hard to find for decades. Although Bolet's volume contains more recent material from his last London/Decca years, it is good to have a de facto "Liszt's Greatest Hits for the Piano" selection as comprehensive as this one. Tureck is often described as the "high priestess of Bach," a statement that might have given harpsichordist Wanda Landowska pause! Although she has played the music of many other composers, Bach was her forte from an early age, and so he has remained. She has done six commercial recordings of the
Extractions: Don Satz Excellent issues come from Aldwell, Hewitt, and Gould. Betraying the common notion that Gould plays everything too fast, his F sharp prelude is the slowest of the seventeen versions. The performance has all I could want except for some less than strong accenting at times; his use of staccato is revelatory. Aldwell is almost as slow as Gould with a heart-felt and joyous interpretation. Hewitt is faster and provides sensational syncopation. Suzuki's performance seems to me a perfect one. On the slow side, he delivers wonderful levels of comfort and delicacy mixed with superb accenting and syncopation. Suzuki gives me an inner glow; it must be magic. Aldwell is toward the low end with a rushed performance; he sounds as if he's "toughing it out". Jarrett eschews the rushed approach and zooms though the fugue without looking back; it works very well as he puts a lot of excitement into the piece. Other fine versions include the dark-hewn Hewitt, the highly playful Schiff, the tender and slow Roberts, the comforting Horszowski, the delightful Richter, the angular Leonhardt, the cautious and deliberate Tilney, the urgent Suzuki, and the swift and energetic Fischer. Aside from Aldwell, each of these issues is well appreciated. Glenn Gould is in class of his own. He does everything the other great versions do and also creates a musical drama of highly contrasting emotions. The urgency and sense of resolution keep me glued to the headphones. This is certainly one of Gould's best Bach interpretations.

However, there are always no definite answers of articulation and phrasing for a specific style of a composer. F. Couperin's L'art de toucher le clavecin may have introduced some of his contemporaries' performing habits, but it also presented more of his own techniques. Furthermore, it is hard to ascertain if J. S. Bach favored using a harpsichord or a clavichord in playing some of his keyboard works, so Rosalyn Tureck's interpretation of Bach's music with the harpsichord would be one possibility. How about C. P. E. Bach's ? It revealed some of J. S. Bach's revolutionary ideas of performance practice, but the theory can sometimes be harmonized with the music of later composers in the 19 th century too.

QUOTE by Rosalyn Tureck and Margaret Chase Smith. Etta Shiber and Kitty Beaurepos At the time of the German invasion of France, Etta Shiber, American author of Paris Underground (1943), then in her 60's, lived in Paris with her good friend Kitty Beaurepos. They had met in a dress shop on a trip Shiber had made to Paris in 1925. Her book graphically describes the confusion and fear felt by the refugees on the crowded roads, some on foot carrying what possessions they could, others in dog- or horse-drawn vehicles, and some like Shiber-Beaurepos in automobiles - all subject to being machine-gunned and bombed from German planes - and there was no food left anywhere. The two old women stopped at an inn to search for food and found, instead, a British aviator who failed to get evacuated at Dunkirk. They hide him in the trunk of their car and when the Germans caught their refugee column and turned them back to Paris, the aviator - undiscovered - went with them. They hid him in their apartment, finally making contact with the underground to get him out.

Widely considered to be the summit of keyboard music, it is an encyclopaedia of forms and styles, and, especially, of contrapuntal composition. Rosalyn Tureck, once called the High Priestess of Bach, has certainly marked the twentieth century with her many recordings of Bachs keyboard music on piano. This recording, made for the BBC in 1975 and 1976, is a welcome addition to her discography. Rosalyn Turecks landmark 1953 recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier remains one of the milestones in the discography of Bach recordings, but this set, recorded more than twenty years later, shows the pianist at the summit of her form. Benefiting from an additional two decades of experience with this music, she gives it insights of which few pianists would be capable.

To mark the occasion, this special edition of the Fishko Files, "20 years After Glenn Gould," examines Bach as it is played on the modern piano, especially as it has or has not been influenced by Gould's style. Distinguished pianists Murray Perahia, Vladimir Feltsman, Angela Hewitt, Edward Aldwell, Maria Tipo and Sergei Schepkin are among the participants. The program traces the rise and fall and rise of Bach on the piano, from the years of Wanda Landowska and Rosalyn Tureck, through the Gould years to the present. Ample excerpts of performances by the pianists, as well as by Gould himself, will illustrate the commentary. Glenn Gould's arresting version of the Bach Goldberg Variations, first released in the mid-1950's, brought worldwide attention to both the pianist and the composition. More recordings and performances of Bach followed, in a style so distinctive as to have all but eclipsed other Bach players of his generation. Gould famously chose the recording studio over the concert stage early in his career, declaring, "the concert is dead." Known for his peculiar work habits (most notably his obsession with temperature in the studios) and a contrarian's approach to music in general (he dismissed many of Beethoven's greatest works while becoming fascinated by Petula Clark) Gould was one of the rare classical musicians to cross over into popular consciousness. But before the world knew about the oddities of his behavior, they knew about his Bach playing. It is his performance of the music of Bach and its effect that will be examined in 20 Years after Glenn Gould.
