Extractions: Rudi Mahall , bass clarinet Aki Takase and Rudi Mahall. The celebrated Japanese pianist Aki Takase has lived in Germany since 1981, collaborating with the most prestigious jazz artists on the world scene. It was in 1996, too, that she first teamed up on stage with the young German bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall who, despite his classical clarinet training, comes from the world of contemporary music and improvisation. The duo's tight-knit collaboration, with one foot in the modern and the other in the avant-garde, is based on works by Thelonious Monk and Eric Dolphy amongst others, all treated with freedom, intelligence, passion and humour. One of the most exciting projects to have emerged in recent years.

In this recording of a 1996 concert in Tokyo, the 18-piece big band includes long-time Schlippenbach cohorts Evan Parker and Paul Lovens, and trombonist Paul Rutherford, all giants of European free jazz. In addition to breath-taking improvisations and original compositions by Schlippenbach and Takase, the concert features an Eric Dolphy medley (arranged by Takase) and a couple of surprises W.C. Handy's "Way Down South" (arranged by Schlippenbach) and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" (Benny Goodman's closing theme, here arranged by Willem Breuker).
