Extractions: Video games February 3, 2002 At first glance, it's just another show filled with the dance and drumming of central Africa. But look a little deeper and you'll discover that Children of Uganda, at Ann Arbor's Power Center on Friday and Saturday, is far more significant. Yes, it is a show. But it's also a fund-raising arm of the Uganda Children's Charity Foundation, an organization that supports Ugandan orphanages. Instead of asking the world to help children in a nation few westerners could find on a map, the foundation opted to give the once-powerless children a voice. Today, the 20-person company of young people they range in age from 6 to 17 has become the most effective ambassador for hundreds of children in the two orphanages the foundation supports. "They give a new face to the authentic songs and dances of our home," says director Frank Katoola. "For the young people, it is very challenging. But doing this gives them more schools and more opportunities. And more hope." Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Power Center, 121 Fletcher, Ann Arbor. Tickets are $16-$32 by calling 734-764-2538 or, outside the 734 area code and within Michigan, 800-221-1229, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, or online at

CD Review: Pianist Runs Gamut From Classic To Klezmer In New CD (11-8-1996) November 8, 1996 CD Review pianist runs gamut from classic to klezmer in new CD Michigan pianist david syme has played Chopin in Warsaw, Tchaikovsky in Moscow and "Amazing Grace" in a Kentucky Baptist church. http://jewishsf.com/bk961108/suppcd.htm
Extractions: November 8, 1996 SUZANNE WEISS Bulletin Correspondent Michigan pianist David Syme has played Chopin in Warsaw, Tchaikovsky in Moscow and "Amazing Grace" in a Kentucky Baptist church. Son of one rabbi and brother of another, the Juilliard graduate spent the early part of his career consciously moving away from his roots, working as a classical pianist, rock band member and radio host. He made his Detroit Symphony debut at age 18. "I didn't want to explore Jewish music," he has said. "I thought I was unique in my rebellion but I found that Jewish history is filled with examples of people leaving the nest in order to find their identity." Now in his mid-40s, Syme has come home, marrying his classical training with the traditions of his people in a one-man show, "Jewish Roots and the Classics," which he performs at synagogues and JCCs nationwide. His CD "Jewish Music Then and Now" amplifies that theme. Part of a discography that encompasses everything from Gershwin to love songs to rock (one recording has the intriguing title, "Pumping Ivory"), his piano arrangements run the gamut from classic to klezmer. The entire first half of the recording is a delight. Then, for some reason, pianist Syme decides to sing. Big mistake. His vocal rendition of the High Holy Day prayer "Avinu Malkenu" is sincere but we've all heard it done better in shul.

M. Robert Syme Rabbi Was Champion Of Families Born July 4, 1920, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Rabbi syme attended St. His survivorsinclude sons david, a concert pianist, and Daniel, rabbi at Temple http://www.freep.com/news/obituaries/syme12_20030312.htm
Extractions: FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Rabbi M. Robert Syme, a soft-spoken advocate for youth and strong families who served as a rabbi at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield for nearly 47 years, died Tuesday. He was 82. Rabbi Syme died of cancer at his son David's home in West Bloomfield. In his years at Temple Israel, Rabbi Syme saw the congregation grow into the largest in the metro area and one of the largest in the country. His personable sermons and his wise counsel helped the congregation grow to its current 12,000 members. As a rabbi, he believed his first obligation was to counsel, to make lives better. He made himself available to anyone who needed him regardless of their religion and almost at any time, those who knew him said. Despite the rapidly growing Temple Israel, big congregations concerned him a little. "Take a congregation. If I had my way, no congregation would number more than 400 or 500 people. That way, people would know their rabbi, their minister or their priest," Rabbi Syme said in a 1959 Free Press article. Emily Arnold, a member of Temple Israel, who recalled when Rabbi Syme arrived in Detroit 1953, said, "He was just a warm person, a very caring person."
