Star-Telegram Online Services: 1997 Van Cliburn Competition rainbow inside the hall in Utrecht, when Swedish pianist Per Rundberg produced pastCliburn gold medalists Vladimir Viardo and alexei sultanov), creates classic http://www.star-telegram.com/specials/97cliburn/auditions/clib1.htm
Extractions: Star-Telegram staff writer Saturday, Jan. 11: The old mingles comfortably with the new in Utrecht. American tourists may cringe at the sight of McDonald's and Pizza Hut within the shadow of medieval church spires, but the locals seem undisturbed by the convenient juxtaposition of the ancient and modern. One of Europe's largest shopping centers looms just beyond the old market square; part of the center is dedicated to a modern, multi-hall performing arts complex, where today about 200 music lovers have braved the damp, cold winter weather to hear the first session of the 1997 Cliburn auditions. The auditions are held in the Grote Zaal, or "Great Hall" of the center, which seats 1,700. Upcoming events here range from concerts of the renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra to an appearance by the Texas Guitar Slingers. Opening day is as eclectic as the city outside. Frenchman Jerome Ducros, 22, whose application included a recommendation from renowned composer-conductor Pierre Boulez, justifies that endorsement with a searing psychological take on a Haydn Sonata and Bartok's Out of Doors. Is it mere coincidence that this obvious standard-setter is at the front end of the schedule?

Extractions: FROM THE HISTORY OF THE MOSCOW PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY By L. Roschina The Society was a chief organizer of national music competitions. The first of one, won by pianist Emil Gilels, took place in 1933. It was followed by the 1st all-Russia competition of conductors in 1938. Among its prizewinners were Yevgeny Mravinsky, Natan Rakhlin, Konstantin Ivanov and Kirill Kondrashin. Then came the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The Society promptly formed mobile concert brigades. Teams of musicians and performers entertained solders on the fronts and in hospitals. Despite the war, concert life in the capital went its usual way. Dmitry Shostakovich later wrote in his memoirs: "I am infinitely grateful to philharmonic orchestras, musicians and singers who presented my works. I am also grateful to the Moscow public - keen and friendly listeners with a subtle feel for music. I am sure that all of my colleagues who attended the premieres of their own works in the Society would agree with me". It's impossible to enumerate all that has been done over the past years. Every decade brought new names and new orchestras - new stars appeared on the Russian musical horizon. Today, as before, the Philharmonic Society continues to unite the most talented musicians and performers, and as before, it remains faithful to its audiences, offering them the best it can give.

Star-Telegram, June 9, 1997 alexei sultanov, the 1989 gold medalist, was Russian, and 1985 gold medalist Jose JurorMenahem Pressler, himself a concert pianist, praised the way Nakamatsu http://www.geocities.com/nakamatsu_piano/articles/win_0609.html
Extractions: Star-Telegram Staff Writer FORT WORTH Jon Nakamatsu, a high school German teacher who has never studied at a piano conservatory, became the first American in 16 years to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition yesterday. The intense and diminutive Californian was rewarded with a two- minute standing ovation and intense roar from a capacity crowd at the Fort Worth/Tarrant County Convention Center's JFK Theatre. He also received $20,000 in cash, a compact disc recording session, a debut at Carnegie Hall and a two- year concert tour. A small group of supporters piano students at the Texas Christian University Cliburn Institute raised an American flag and signs that read, "Nakamatsu is Cliburn" and "Hellooooo, Jonny." Throughout the 16-day competition, Nakamatsu had been considered an underdog in a particularly strong field of pianists, but he had become a sentimental favorite. His performance of Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto and the suddenly popular Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto Friday night in the final round may have clinched his victory. His Rach 3, made popular this year by the movie 'Shine', the redemptive tale of the deeply troubled David Helfgott, was considered by many to be the single highest moment of the competition, pulling the shouting, applauding audience to its feet in a lengthy tribute. Chants of "USA, USA!" filled the auditorium for the only American among the six finalists.

Sergei Rachmaninoff John Browning Browning was the first pianist to record this work in its alexei sultanov-Nothing surprising until the end where he uses Horowitz's chromatic http://www.gmlile.com/rach/rachsont/recordings.html
Extractions: To My Homepage Zoltan Kocsis - This is a recording that belongs in EVERY Rachmaninoff record collection. Kocsis must have an innate understanding of Rachmaninoff. His performance is so fluid and lucid. Like Horowitz, to Kocsis this music seems as natural as breathing. To add the the majesty, this performance was recorded masterfully. A suberb performance. John Browning - Browning was the first pianist to record this work in its entirety in the original 1913 edition. Since the original version was never published outside Russia at the time he made his recording (1986), he had to make copies of a first edtion copy from a worker at a music store in New York. A very powerful performance, one of my favorites. John Lill - The sound of this recording is the most exciting part. The piano is wonderful, but the music is not so good. Freddie Kempf - Quite good (for being played on a Yamaha (WINK)) A very Romantic performance.
